Chapter 4
After some time swinging, Spider-Man decided to stop and swung up to the top of a nearby building and moved towards the middle of the roof, kneeling down by an air conditioning unit.
'Alright...let's see who these assassin's are…' He reflected.
He actually had chosen this roof especially as it was one of his drop points. He had stashed a webbed up bag here, with a change of clothes and other small but useful items. But also, a laptop that he had prepared for certain things, such as this. Taking out the PDA and booting up the laptop he got to work and after checking to make sure the PDA was clean of viruses or malware he began working on the contents until he found the files he was looking for, dossiers, pictures and even a short video showing each assassin in action.
'Here we are...now, let's see who we've got here…' Spider-Man thought.
He began going through them as he considered the implications of this. Wondering why Kingpin would put so high a figure on his head.
'Ten million, that's crazy, Willy must really want me dead, have I messed things up for him that bad. I guess that's good in a way but…' He wondered. 'Hmmm, I wonder, I think I recognize a couple of faces here, some I've seen before or fought...there's two here that I've actually defeated and sent to jail before.'
That surprised him, but then he considered that might be a motive for those ones to go after him, revenge.
Spider-Man checked on the first file, but only briefly for he noted right away who it was.
'Lonnie Lincoln, Tombstone, already taken care of him, the police will have him now...oof, I pity his cellmate.'
The second file confused him and he checked it in a bit more detail and even played the video, shocked by what he saw.
'So, don't know this guy, some mercenary called Taskmaster, guess he sees this as just another payday, but damn...those moves. He has an eidetic memory and can actually mimic his opponents fighting moves just by watching him, that'll be scary.' He reflected.
Looking through the next three, Spider-Man smiled, he recognized them all and had fought all three of them, with two of them being jailed following his fight with them.
He shook his head. 'Well, well, quite the crew we're getting here…Okay, first we have, my old friend Mac Gargan, Scorpion, guess jail didn't help him. Next is Aleksei Sytsevich, good old Rhino, not using his head. Another jailbird, quite literally, Adrian Toomes, guess Vulture wants revenge, or new technology, ten mil would help with that...ah, maybe both.'
He shook his head, it was becoming quite the crew, these assassins, and these were just the ones specifically hired for the bounty, Tombstone did say it was a free for all, so he'd have to constantly watch his back.
'Especially with this guy…' Spidey realized as he checked the next file. 'Dmitri Smerdyakov, even Chameleon is gunning after me. Huh and now this guy...don't know too much about him personally, but have heard about him, even Hammerhead is looking to claim the bounty.'
Spider-Man let out a slow breath, this was getting very worrying and he'd only seen seven of the eight files, seven of the eight assassins, albeit that was the number that was also left since Tombstone was already dealt with.
So, checking the last file, Spider-Man paused, filled with dread.
'Who is this guy, I've never heard of him before...Sergei Kravinoff. That's bad, this unknown element makes it all the more dangerous.'
Quickly shutting things off and stashing the PDA, he began thinking quickly, he knew of ways he could fight most of them, although he'd need to adapt as they would surely have some new tactics, the only one that wouldn't would most likely be Rhino. But regardless, it was the two unknowns, Taskmaster and Sergei Kravinoff, that gave him lingering feelings of dread. He was jolted out of his thoughts however when a loud explosion sounded nearby.
"What the-!?" Spidey gasped.
He hurried to get there, already hearing the screams, leaping off the ledge and swinging towards the scene. That was when he saw something that panicked him, Sam, running and stumbling turning back to try and push his way back, having narrowly avoided another blast. For then the attacker came in sight, it was another old friend, one who Spidey had faced and put in jail before, Shocker.
"I won't ask again, boy, where is Spider-Man!?" Shocker roared at Sam, taking aim at him with his gauntlets.
Sam backed up as best he could, but was still unable to get back to his feet. "I told you, I don't know!"
"You-!"
Spider-Man had enough by this point and took action. "Right here, Herman!"
With that he launched two impact webs which hit the gauntlets and covered them in web, drawing Shocker's attention.
With a roar he broke through the webbing as he sent twin blasts right at Spider-Man who dodged. Taking advantage of the moment he sent a subtle nod to Sam who took his chance and got to his feet before running for cover, but not away. Instead he had his camera ready, knowing he was about to get yet more shots of Spider-Man facing down one of the supervillains who plagued the city. Spider-Man wasted no time, altering his path in mid air with a web-line, he fired another impact web, this one aimed at Shocker's feet, it caught one of them and Shocker looked down.
"What the, you think that'll stop me!"
Spider-Man shook his head. "C'mon Herman, this isn't like you, you're a bank robber, why are you trying to kill people?"
"Kill them, I'm interrogating them. That brat knows so much about you, I've seen his photos, his work!" Shocker snapped. "He was the perfect source to find you, so I can claim that ten million!"
Spider-Man groaned as he realized. "Oh, you're after the bounty too...great."
He shook his head, knowing Shocker wasn't one of the assassins, so he was simply one of those taking advantage of the free for all.
"This ends now, time for you to die!" Shocker roared.
With that he launched another powerful blast which Spider-Man dodged and, taking no chances, launched himself right at Shocker using his webs. Caught off guard Shocker had no choice but to take the tackle. Knocking his opponent to the ground, Spider-Man began punching away on Shocker until Shocker used his gauntlets to launch Spider-Man off him but his follow up attack failed and Spidey used the situation to his advantage and began webbing Shocker up until he was unable to do anything, as using his gauntlets would cause the blast to hit him instead. He soon had Shocker up in a familiar position, webbed upside down from the nearest lamp post.
Shaking his head Spider-Man turned to see Sam approaching, an awestruck expression on his face.
Laughing as he recognized the look and knew Sam well enough both in and out of his costume, Spider-Man quipped. "Well, if it isn't my number one fan."
"Um, yeah, thanks." Sam said sincerely, if awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck. "You saved me...and gave me some amazing shots for a new article."
Spider-Man shrugged. "Glad to be of service. Take care though you, I'd hate for you get hurt just for these pictures."
"Yeah, I got it. Um, why was he so eager to get you, I heard something about ten million?" Sam wondered.
Spider-Man pondered for a moment, wondering about how much to share. The same awkwardness that they had faced in school seemed thick there too, even with Sam not knowing Spider-Man's true identity, which made him wonder.
Clearing his throat he said carefully. "There's a bounty out on my head, any of the criminals in this city can claim it but...you need to be extra careful if you're trying to get pictures of me, there are eight guys, seven now since I took one out, who were specifically hired to kill me. Please, don't take unnecessary risks."
Sam was shocked but nodded in agreement and watched in amazement as Spider-Man finally left and swung away into the night.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
