The raid on the Wu camp has been uneventful, relatively at least, if you don't count the massacre and bloodshed. When slicing limps off becomes a part of your daily life then, yup, pretty much uneventful.
The skirmish lasted for an hour at most. By then half the troops from both sides have met their demise. And while it remains disheartening to see the bodies of my fellow soldiers, I have to remind myself that we have done the same to the enemy - that their sacrifices were not in vain, and such tragedy comes with the job and that my emotions must remain in check otherwise I would have been a mental wreck a long time ago.
"How would you like my spear up your butts, shitheads!" at least, someone is having fun. While Lord Zhang Fei is getting a kick out of terrorizing the Wu soldiers with promises of stabs in very painful areas, I focused on running through more of the opposing troops, swiftly spearing them as I go without stopping, leaving a trail of lifeless bloodies in my wake.
I met Lord Guan Yu along the way but no sign of Master Liu Bei. Among the battlefield taking place around us, I hastily asked the older Tiger General if he has seen our lord.
"He ran off to the west side of the camp. Let's go check on him." we both made our way quickly to where we think the lord might be. Any enemy that attempted to stop us was dead in a flash. Until we finally saw a green cape in the distance and I was horrified and ran faster when I saw Lord Liu Bei fighting with just one arm holding the sword, the other one holding the second sword remained by his side, covered in blood.
"He's injured." I panted. "Let's hurry!" me and the larger general quickly dashed to our master's aid, who was struggling against the camp leader while surrounded by a few other soldiers attempting to jump him every time he turns his back only to get deflected at the last second. Just as one of them was about to succeed at landing a hit, I stabbed him in the neck before yanking the blade away, leaving the half-decapitated soldier on the ground with a small fountain of blood gushing out the fatal wound.
As a silent agreement, I went to take out the lower ranking enemies while Lord Guan Yu focuses on the higher ranking one. Thanks to Lord Liu Bei's efforts, the enemy officer has already been injured and there weren't much soldiers to worry about, making it easy for Lord Guan Yu and me to take care of the rest.
"Eeh! Gah!" the wounded enemy leader grunted while desperately swinging his sword at Lord Guan Yu, only to get effortlessly deflected then receive a stab to the gut. By then, I was done with the remaining enemies in no time then went to focus on a more pressing matter.
"My lord!" I rushed to Master Liu Bei's side to check his arm; A clean, deep cut across his upper arm. While it isn't very serious, save for the slight bleeding, it still needs medical attention. "It's okay. We'll take you back to camp immediately!"
"You know I'll live, Zhao Yun." he chuckled. "But I suppose this needs to be taken care of. We're done here anyway. Let's get back." and so I escorted my lord to camp followed by Lord Zhang Fei and the majority of our troops to keep watch especially over the injured emperor. I let him ride behind me while I held his horse's reins to walk alongside mine. Lord Guan Yu stayed behind to supervise for resource gathering alongside a few of our troops and to make sure no more enemies were around. As our horses made their way through the slowly deserting camp, I stumbled upon a sight so upsetting, I yanked on my horse's reins too hard to stop him.
"Something wrong, Zhao Yun?" I heard my lord ask from behind me.
"... well, I- " I didn't know what to say at the sight of a few familiar faces among the dead troops. I recognised some of them as the ones who shared their dinner with me last night; their faces laughing, smiling and beaming with genuine care, now bloody, lifeless and staring blankly at nothing.
Just as I was about to dismiss the whole thing and force myself to move on, my lord seemed to have followed my gaze and knew what I was thinking. "It's okay. They're in a better place." he said patting my arm. "Those soldiers bravely died for what they believed in. Rest assured they would have wanted nothing more." I nodded with a grunt before nudging my horse and pulling the other one's reins to usher them to walk faster. I was so lost in my grief that I forgot there's an injured man behind me who needs immediate care.
"I'm sorry for letting such losses affect me." I said looking over my shoulder as we got out the camp's gate. "It's just that... some of them were the ones who offered me their food yesterday. I have dealt with lots of deaths but it's different when it's someone you're familiar with, even a little."
"It hits harder, yes." agreed my lord. "And the closer you are, the more painful the loss gets." I sighed in silent agreement and looked up ahead. A few minutes of silence passed which is a complete contrast from the cluster of yells and metal clanging from a short while ago. I took the time to take in the view around us. The landscape stretched vast and beyond beneath the baby blue sky streaked with smooth expanses of clouds. I looked around taking in the relaxing sight of the trees swaying gently with the breeze until my eyes fell on -
"Bo!"
"Hehe!" I chuckled at Lord Zhang Fei's lighthearted attempt at a jumpscare as he rode right next to me. But his playfulness quickly died down when he took a look at the lord riding behind me.
"You okay there, brother?" Inquired the butt impaling general, his thick eyebrows furrowing.
"Mm-hmm." I heard my lord humming in a strained voice. At some point, he leaned with his head against my shoulder and felt it moving when he nodded. He must be in pain that he couldn't talk.
"My lord?" I looked behind me again, worry evident in my voice, but I could barely see the top of his head.
"Your ponytail keeps getting in my face." I heard him complain in a good natured way . At least he's well enough to jest around a bit. But that didn't do much to ease my concern. I seriously thought he was going to faint.
"I know it hurts, lord. Just please hang on!" I said slightly nudging the horses until they were practically speed walking.
Can't these things walk any faster? I mentally grumbled gritting my teeth, feeling impatient to get my wounded master to safety. To my dismay, I can't command the horses to run seeing as Lord Liu Bei wouldn't be able to keep his balance when he's practically putting all his energy into fighting the pain, making the trip back to base unnervingly long.
"Chill out, boy! It is but a scratch!" said the older general. I nodded non-committally, not exactly in the mood to exchange words when all my focus is on the wounded man currently grunting quietly behind me.
"You'll be fine, my lord. It's gonna be okay." I said soothingly rubbing his hands that were held around my waist. I kept my hold on them for the rest of the longer-than-it-should-have-been trek back to camp.
Soldiers getting killed, friend or foe.
Your comrade getting injured.
Destroying and looting camps.
Yup. Yet another uneventful day in the life of a war general.
"This should do." I smiled with satisfaction as I was done wrapping Lord Liu Bei's arm with the bandages. I made sure to clean the wound as thoroughly as possible that I almost wanted to pour the entire bottle of sanitizer on him. And since it hurt his arm to move, I had to put it in a cast so as not to agitate the delicate wound.
"Thank you, Zhao Yun." said my lord examining my handiwork. "That reminds me of yesterday when you treated that kid's leg."
"Nothing Nurse Z can't handle!" We laughed a bit before we stood straight up. "Wonder how they're doing now..." I mumbled more to myself as we both exited the medical tent.
"I'm sure they're okay. They received help from you after all." said my lord proudly while keeping a hand on his shoulder under which the wound resided. He looked ahead to see Lord Guan Yu coming back with the rest of the cavalry. The provisions included the usual food, medical supplies and money. My lord excused himself, thanked me one more time, then left to check on what the others had collected. I stuck around for a bit to do my own business as well; between checking for status report and sparring with the soldiers to hone their fighting skills.
All in all, the rest of the day went by uneventfully. And by uneventful, I actually meant it! No brutal deaths this time!
It was around dusk when the time to rest had finally come. Me and the fellow high ranking officials gathered around the bonfire having the meals we looted and, this time, I actually had my own dinner without the need for anyone to feed me like a stray animal!
Lord Liu Bei, Zhang Fei and Guan Yu were discussing nothing and everything. From serious topics such as war and strategy, to trivial ones like riceball eating contests. I would have normally chimed in with my own input, but what I have on mind involves something much bigger than your favourite dumpling filling.
I still have some time to kill before I set out on my first village rescue quest. My thoughts drifted to the barren home of people deprived of the simplest life joys. Wonder how everyone are faring. Probably in their homes trying to chock on bone remains left by the wolves. And the children I met. Are they hoping for another meal like the one I gave up for them? No matter. They won't have to worry about such things anymore. Everything in my tent is ready. The poncho, the mask and the special item. I even prepared a bag containing smaller bags for the berry gathering, a sterilizer, bandages and some gold. With the physical preparation out the way, mental preparation is all I could do until then.
Hang on, everyone. I thought. Give me a little more time. And you'll have a stomach-bursting meal right at your doorstep.
"BUUURP!" I raised my head at Lord Zhang Fei who was the source of the impressive belch, causing the other soldiers around us to jump. Some of them laughed, others looked outright freaked out. I even heard a hushed 'what the fuck'.
"Nice one, Lord Zhang Fei!" I laughed trying not to choke on a chicken dumpling.
"It's not nice, it's gross." grumbled Lord Liu Bei as he took a bite from his riceball. Lord Guan Yu just grinned stroking his beard in amusement. They don't call that man Lord of the Magnificent Beard for nothing!
"What about you, boy? Care to try out a burp like mine?" challenged Lord Zhang Fei.
"I'll pass!" I wheezed. It's not that I shy away from burping loudly. But when Lord Liu Bei is around, I tend to behave myself in more ways than one. I even refrain from cursing in front of him! Except during the occasional slip-ups when the situation is dire enough for me to spout a profanity. Or during extremely rare cases when I get so angry, I curse freely without caring if my lord is there or not, not out of disrespect of course, but you know what I mean. And while I normally mind my manners even if he's not present, not even I am above joining in on some juvenile activity!
"It's because brother is here, right?" sneered Zhang Fei playfully.
"Yes! Otherwise I would have shown you what real burping is!" I wheezed again, finding the whole thing uncontrollably hysterical. Though don't tell him that my taunt is just a bluff. I can burp impressively given a good effort, but I can't live up to a guy who burps like a farm animal.
"Hah! That will be the day!" he scoffed before brutally eliminating a piece of dried jerky. Dinner went on for a while until it was teatime. By then, I had allowed myself to join in on the talk. I would offer an opinion or a reply here and there while inhaling a much needed sip of tea. No point stressing over a matter I have already prepared for. Not to mention that I didn't need to rouse Master Liu Bei's suspicions again by looking like I was deep in thought with tea dripping out of my mouth!
Time slowly went on; Lord Liu Bei casually chatting, Guan Yu replying and nodding, Zhang Fei laughing and burping, everyone else in the camp having their own good time just like how a break from work should be. Eventually, after I was done with the tea, I had to excuse myself to my tent much to my lord's surprise. After all, it is way too early. He questioned me looking seemingly concerned. But I told him I had a bit of a long day, which is the truth and all, but he didn't need to know the real reason. Thankfully, he was understanding enough to let me go so I walked to my tent totally not missing Zhang Fei's remark.
"Maybe my burps scared him off! Haha!"
"I'd be terrified too..." mumbled Lord Liu Bei. I crawled into my tent with an amused grin at said exchange. But now I need to rest properly. I have work to do at dawn after all.
Soon, everyone. Soon. Ugh, I really need to stop repeating this phrase in my head... Anyway, I took off my armor and laid down on the cot. Forcing myself to close my eyes. It may not be easy to go to sleep off-schedule which is why, to be honest, I sparred with more soldiers than usual today. I didn't just do it for their sake. But I also did it to wear myself out. I even asked Guan Yu and Zhang Fei to take me on both at the same time. Compared to the rest of the soldiers, those two are maddeningly strong which proved to be more of a challenge and, of course, more exhausting to fight against. The soldiers surrounding us stood in awe as they witnessed the battle of their own generals as they faced off in a two against one mock fight. Some of them cheered us on. Master Liu Bei was silently watching with a calm yet proud expression on his face as I switched between dodging and counter attacking my adversaries.
At least my plan for self-exhaustion worked. And just like that, I slowly drifted off to sleep. Keeping in mind that once I wake up, I'll have special work to be done.
It is time.
I woke up to the sound of... you guessed it - no, as a matter of fact, you didn't - my phone.
Thanks to my traveling across different worlds on a few occasions, I was able to bear witness to eras much more advanced than ours. Which is how I became acquainted with, as they call it, technology.
I have met people with different styles, outfits, traditions, weapons and of varying looks and races. Lots of which I grew proud to call my allies. And it's because of that that I have learned what media is and developed a taste for action and horror. We would occasionally discuss our favourite movies, games, books, music, anime. You name it.
But of course, where there are friends, there are also enemies. I have faced off against demons, fiends, monsters, BOWs, machines. Forbidden fearsome adversaries against which I haven't fought before. The ones in my world don't even begin to compare. And how do I compare a regular human, no matter how strong and well trained, to a 5 ton virus infected monster that requires heavy artillery to take down?
It is thanks to all these experiences that I have become familiar with things that I normally shouldn't even hear of, including the possession of a phone, I even have a laptop in my room back at the imperial castle, and a gaming console that was given to me as a gift, I can even drive a car!
Not everyone has access to these things in my world though but they learned to accept it. After all, trades across multiple worlds is slowly yet surely becoming a thing and soon, even the humble meatbun merchant will be casually chatting with his family on his Nokia!
Naturally, Lord Liu Bei and the other generals have their own phones too. And while they knew how to handle the otherworldly devices, I would occasionally teach them and give them tips. According to Master Liu Bei, I'm the technology smart guy in the group! Which is ironic considering what era I'm from but hey, no complaints! Having these things became horribly convenient. No more messengers. No more sending letters. The old methods are still used if you don't have the contact of the one you wish to reach or haven't yet acquired a phone. But the fact still remains that these little devices, not only are they fun and entertaining, saved us a lot of trouble. Heck, whenever Master Liu Bei wishes to see me, he'd just give me a quick call and I'll be right next to him!
Speaking of the tool in question, I had set the alarm timer to around 3 am. And when the time had arrived, it was emitting the ringtone of one of my favourite metal bands. Ah, Skillet! Your music is such an inspiration!
I turned the tone off and set to work. First I grabbed the black nylon sling bag - again, courtesy of another world - put on the poncho, followed by the face mask and the final tool that would complete the getup.
A night vision goggles.
I sliced the head off another Majini. The parasite infected zombies zeroed in on us wielding machetes and assault rifles which me, Chris Redfield and his team prepared to intercept. The entirety of Alpha team which consisted of Chris, Leon, Claire, Jill, Piers and Helena went trigger happy with their rifles, handguns and shotguns. Whilst I only had my humble spear which did just as good as the shooting machines.
The Majini were relentless. They'd shoot from behind a wall or outright run at us with melee weapons. I'd take those ones out while my otherworldly friends focus on shooting the gun-wielding ones. I'd deflect a bullet or two. Stab an enemy who was about to hit Leon or push Claire out the way. Helena shot a guy in the head who approached me from behind with her menacing double barrel shotgun. Chris, to my horror, would LITERALLY punch the shit out of a Majini causing the latter's head to explode making the culprit parasite pop out screaming from the stump before completely dying off. I mean with muscles that size, you'd use your fists more often. To this day, I still wish I'd never be on the receiving end of said fist. That man's strength borderline rivals Lord Zhang Fei!
"Heads up, Z!" shouted Piers. I turned to find a Majini whose entire upper torso turned into a grotesque pile of round fleshy armor which opens revealing a nasty mouthlike structure. There's a deformed mound of of flesh hanging from side of its hips. I've seen that one before. One of the most dangerous Majini mutations. Not easy to take down yet can just as easily oneshot you.
"Uh, flash grenades, anyone?" inquired Leon. And judging from how everybody backed away apprehensively from the troublesome foe as it approached us, there were no flash grenades.
"I have an idea." I stated as I watched Jill jump out of the way just as the thing shrieked almost headbutting her. "But it's risky."
"Alright. I'll leave it to you." said Chris. "If didn't go well, we'll bail you out. You're wearing armor anyway so you should handle more damage." The Alphas backed away as I stabbed the monster in the flesh hanging from its hip to divert its attention away from Helena and force its focus on me.
Alright, Zhao Yun. I thought. Time this right. My allies patiently waited as I baited the monstrosity into attacking me with its open jaws. But all I had to do was dodge out of its heavy hitting headbutts until, finally, came the moment I've been waiting for.
NOW! the word flashed in my mind as the mutant opened its torso/maw and I swiftly stabbed the revealed weakspot with all my might, forcing the thing on its back, I put my foot on it to pin it down while yanking the spear left and right to land as much damage as possible until the thing screeched one last time before dying and decomposing.
"Great job, pal." praised Leon.
"That was quick thinking." added Helena.
"Not to mention it saved ammo." laughed Jill while Claire affectionately stroked my ponytail in silent gratitude as is her habit.
We chatted and playfully bickered for a few minutes until I noticed Chris' absence. Then I found him in the background seemingly looking for something. I excused myself then went to approach the humanoid mass of muscles.
"Chris?" I called. We've known each other long enough that I no longer refer to him as Master Redfield. It's a wonder what long lasting friendships can do to your attitude towards someone.
"Hmm no this won't do." he said tossing aside what looked like a broken headgear.
"What are you looking for?"
"Your gift."
"Huh?"
He walked among the battlefield remains searching among the broken equipment and weapons. Occasionally he'd pick up the same type of item before tsk'ing and throwing it away. I stood there letting the man do his thing, letting the conversation between the others behind me a few feet away keep me occupied until the man uttered a small 'ah! finally!'. He picked the item then approached me with with an eager grin.
"Sorry to keep you waiting. It was hard to find one that isn't broken or without bullet holes in it." he handed over a black mask with green eyes. "Come with me." I let the man escort me somewhere darker. "Put it on." I obeyed and when I did, I gasped. I couldn't believe what I saw!
"I can see everything!" I marveled as I took in my surroundings, now perfectly visible in a hue of green instead of the pitch blackness.
"It's a night vision goggles. I want you to have it." smiled Chris. "In your world, you have limited light source. This little bad boy should be quite the help on the long run."
His words echoed in my head as I walked through the forest with the gadget attached to my eyes, turning the dim blackness of the night into a bright visible green scene. I couldn't hold back a chuckle as I happily wandered through the dark forest with the eyesight of a feline. That should make things WAY easier! Remind me to thank the guy the next time I see him again.
Of course, I was dimly aware of what I look like right now. A guy in a black outfit and a green eyed mask. I probably look like a ghost! I hope I don't freak out the villagers if they spot me.
Speaking of which, I gotta find some prey, sooner than later, preferably. But first thing is first, I walked to the nearest tree, unsheathed my claws and began sharpening them on the bark, leaving long shallow lines on the wood. I scratched at the tree for a few good minutes and once I deemed my claws sharp enough, I moved on, licking my fangs to emphasize how ready I am for the upcoming hunt. I even kept the mask down just in case.
It didn't take me long to find my first victim thanks to my vision enhancing gadget. A young buck. Three pointer. His green form revealed him grazing by himself while wagging his tail, totally oblivious to the dark veiled hunter a few feet behind him among the foliage, and by that I'm referring to little ol' me!
Commence Operation Village Rescue.
Slowly and carefully, I approached; claws sharp and unsheathed ready to catch the target. My steps carefully aiming for where they would make noise the least, avoiding dry leaves and twigs, and by the time the deer turned his head to look behind, I bounced.
The deer ran off but didn't have enough of a headstart so I chased him for only a short distance before I caught up and grabbed the haunches. The animal snorted and kicked to no avail. I dodged his attempts at throwing me off by twisting my torso sideways, claws never leaving the flesh. I have to be careful to avoid getting kicked, I don't have my armor on after all. The sooner I take this thing down, the better. So I slightly leaped to force the buck down using the momentum of my weight but considering the strength and stamina of the animal, it will have to take more than a few attempts. I even bit down hard wherever my mouth could reach to further exhaust it.
After a few minutes of struggle, the animal has fallen. Before he had a chance to get up again, I quickly pulled the broken spearhead I found the other day and sliced his throat. I suppose I forgot to mention that I brought this thing with me. After giving it a good wash from the dust and rust pieces, I began using it as a makeshift dagger. I could have brought an actual dagger with me but I never thought I'd need one, plus we have none back at camp and the nearest blacksmith is residing back at Shu.
While the still twitching buck bleeds out from the slit in his neck, I licked the blood from my lips, teeth and claws then brought out a bag and began collecting berries. You know, something the villagers could have as a dessert, you might say. I don't want to just feed them meat. Once the bag is full, I went back to my kill, hoisted the bag to the antlers and began dragging the deer with me to the village.
Thankfully, I didn't have to drag the package for long because when the animal first bolted, he ran off in the general direction of the village and by the time I caught him, I was already more than halfway to the destination in question. So the trek there didn't take more than five minutes. I left the prizes at the village border and stood there catching my breath for a moment, then I pulled up my mask, readjusted my hood then carefully got closer to see if anyone is still around at this hour. My night vision device revealed no one around, and under the green shade in my eyesight, the houses were displayed somewhat rundown but in no danger of collapsing. There is a small cart leaning to the wall of one the houses. There is also a shed nearby, probably used to store food back when the village was flourishing if there was such a time. I scanned the area for a proper spot to leave the deer and berries until I saw - well, well, well, what do we have here? I spotted - well, a well! straight in the center and out in the open, just the way I like it!
I grabbed the deer's antlers with the bag of berries still hanging from it and quickly yet carefully dragged it next to the well. Then I opened my sling bag and took out a small bag of gold and placed it right on top of the deer.
And just like that, my work here is done. I retreated back where I came from and began making my way back to camp. At least there isn't that much of a distance between the village and the camp. And the night vision goggles made the walk in the forest feel more like a walk in a park. It was quite save for the subtle steps of my boots on the grass, crushing the occasional dry leave or twig.
My thoughts drifted back to the things I left back there. Maybe when the village is up and running again, they would make use of the money, perhaps to travel, buy their own food and necessities, do some repairs, whatever they wish for. All I hope for that this whole thing pays off.
I was feeling thrilled when I slipped back to my tent and took the disguise and bag off.
I did it! I actually did it!
I have actually gone and hunted down a deer and left it there for the villagers to find next morning! This whole thing seemed far-fetched when I first thought about it, but now those folk are actually going to wake up to the sight of breakfast next morning. And it didn't even take more than an hour!
Speaking of next morning, I woke up around 9 to the sound of my alarm. I have set up two alarms, one rings at 3 am and the other at 9 am. I wasn't feeling as refreshed though thanks to the recent dawn activity but I donned my armor nonetheless and stepped out of the tent.
I made a general survey of the activity around camp. Soldiers already up and running about. I asked for a report, in case something happened while I was asleep or if another Wu camp has been spotted, but the scouts haven't returned yet.
I approached the camp center to find Guan Yu near the border standing nearby Lord Liu Bei who's talking to... oh..
Oh...
The village chief.
