Chapter 4: An Apology

After Jessica went after Dean, Sam did not drive off but instead parked the car and began to think. At first, he thought Jessica would get his brother to come back to the car. He knew he shouldn't have his girlfriend do all the work but what other choice did he have? No, this was his mess so he should fix it.

Since there wasn't any traffic to contend to, he decided to pull off and follow them at a distance until he was able to catch up. When he got closer, he parked near the sidewalk and got out and began to pace thinking how he was going to go about apologizing. In all honesty he felt like such a jerk to his brother. He begins to question himself. All he wondered was what if he said something else to screw things up further again? That was a chance he was not willing to take quite yet. He was the reason his brother looked so hurt.

With that thought in mind he started to get back in the car but a sound between laughter and a sob broke through his senses. Jessica must have said something that caused that sound from Dean. When he turned around, he saw her holding Dean in a hug while he cried. His head was cradled by her hand between her shoulder and neck as he held her tight as she was whispering to him.

He walked up to them and waited until he was noticed. He never was so he cleared his throat. They broke apart and Dean wiped his face off with the flannel jacket he was wearing not looking at either one of them. He started to walk off again but was stopped by a hand on his shoulder. He turned around and upon noticing it was Sam he landed a solid punch to his face and slammed his knee up into his nether regions. He then turned back around and continued walking.

"You deserved that and a whole lot more," Jessica said bending over in his position at the waist before she stood back up. "I'm not getting in that car until you fix things."

With that she walked in the opposite direction toward the car but not getting in. Not even hearing anything besides the last two words Jessica had spoken, he straightened up and began to run, no limped after his brother determined to make things right again.

"Dean...stop!"

"Why should I?" Dean asked slowing down but not coming to a complete stop as he casted a look over his shoulder. "You don't need me. You've got Jessica to back you up on this hunt."

"I'm trying to apologize here jerk!"

"Bitc-" he responded as if their usual before stopping himself and covering his mouth quickly and slowly turning around to face Sam as he once again uncovered his mouth, arms wide now. "Let's hear it. What could you possibly say that could make everything better?"

Sam was once again baffled by the forced smile and watery eyes of his brother but chose not to comment on it. His brother never cried. Never. Dean Winchester didn't do tears.

"I wasn't trying to imply that you are an invalid. It just came out that way. I do need you, man."

"Why were you so angry? Did I do something wrong?"

Sam blinked a few times completely thrown by the questions. "What?"

"You heard me. Did I do something wrong as to why you're so angry?"

Instead of answering right away, he asked, "Have you thought about what you're going to do with the baby once it gets here?"

The truth was that Jessica, and he had been trying for a baby with no success. She went to the doctor a month prior, and her test results came in. It was determined she could not have children. She was infertile and had been very distraught ever since finding out that. Actually, they both were but only one of them hid it well. She felt like a failure as a woman and Sam wanted a smile on her face. He really wanted to give her a baby even if it was not biologically theirs.

When they found out Sam was quick to reassure her that she makes him happy all on her own and nothing would change due to some stupid test results. Yes, he did indeed use the word stupid at the time since that is what they were. Stupid in every sense of the word. He also made sure to tell her that those test results do not define her being a woman. He just wanted to erase the shame she had if not completely then some of the way.

"...Sammy are you even listening?"

"I'm sorry. What were you saying?"

Dean's next words are inaudible. "I can't take care of a kid while being on the road all the time. I was thinking about giving it up for adoption, hopefully an open adopt-"

Sam interrupts him in a near shout. "What? No! You can't do that. There's got to be another way!"

"Unless you can come up with a better solution..." Dean respondeDeand before leaving it open ended with a shrug of his shoulders. "Why are you so angry at me?"

"Don't change the subject! You cannot do that! I will not allow you to do that! Why would you say something like that?"

"Calm down! I won't give it up if that's what you want."

"What if-what?"

"I said I will not give the baby up. Now why are you so angry at me?"

Sam burst out in tears and almost collapsed in relief if his brother had not caught him and tugged him into a tight hug, head against his shoulder, letting one of his hands fall into his hair.

"I won't do it Sammy," he says fiercely right into Sam's ear. "You hear me? I promise I won't do it. Now calm down and answer me!"

As if he were a kid again relishing the comfort of his big brother, he hides his face in Dean's shoulder wrapping his arms around his back and let the tears fall before pulling back and getting himself together.

"It is not you I'm angry with. Jess cannot have kids, and we really want a baby. Well, I don't need anything but her but the more I think about it the more I am warming up to having one. You are doing the one thing she cannot do."

"You can have mine," Dean answered. "Jess and you would make great parents."

"Really? You would do that? Give up my niece or nephew? But what about-"

"No buts. I'm offering you a way out of hunting. Take it."

Sam slams into Dean in a bone crushing hug so fast he nearly falls backwards. "Thank you! You don't know how much this means to me. Do you forgive me for the incident back at the car?"

"Yeah, and I'm sorry too."

Sam ended the hug with a pat to his brother's back. He turned and ran up to Jessica who stood several feet away by the Impala.

He kissed her and then swooped her up into the air in his arms then set her back down with a wide smile on his face as he looked at her. "We're going to have a baby!"

"What? How? You know I can't have..."

He swooped in and kissed her again cutting her off before speaking again. "Dean's giving us his baby!"

"He's willing to do that?" she said taking his face in her hands looking into his eyes with happiness and answers she was unsure whether to ask out loud.

"Why don't you ask him yourself?" he asked as he took her hand in his and pulling her over to where Dean stood. "Come on!"

Jessica stood a few feet from Dean as she faced him. "Is that true? We can have your baby?"

Dean nodded as he spoke. "Yes, baby girl. You will be a great mom."

Jessica broke into the biggest smile as the first tears fell down her face as she jumped into Dean's arms. Dean caught her and only fell a few steps back before regaining his balance.

"Can't...breathe."

"Oh right," she said as she untangled herself from him and then gave both his cheeks kisses as she held his face in her hands. "I'm sorry."

"That's fine," he said before turning to Sam who watched them with tears of happiness running down his face. "If I knew that I was going to get that much attention I would have said yes sooner."

Sam laughs and punches his arm playfully. "Shut up, jerk!"

"Ow!" Dean responded punching his brother back. "Pregnant guy here, bitch!"

"So, does that mean you two are good?" Jessica said smiling at them both.

"We're good!" the brothers said simultaneously together before smiling at each other.

"Okay then come on guys. Before we solve this case, you need to let me go shopping. I mean I cannot go anywhere like this. One of you need to go with me. Unless of course you want me to get my other clothes and stuff from the apartment?"

"No! I mean...you cannot go back," Sam nearly yells and then hands her money from his wallet. "Go crazy. Buy whatever you want when we drop you off where there is a mall. For now, we are stopping at the nearest hotel."

Jessica stands on her tip toes and kisses his cheek as she takes the money. "Thanks Sam. Which one of you wants to go with me?"

There is an audible groan from both the brothers and then they do rock paper scissors. Dean loses and stomps his foot.

He throws his hands in the air. "Fine! I'll go."

"Come on! How bad can it be?"

Dean does not say anything but goes around to the driver's seat of the Impala. "Keys, Sammy. Where are the keys?"

He acted like he was annoyed but he was looking forward to spending time with her. He wanted to see what type of woman his brother was dating. He wanted to make sure she was the one for his brother.

Sam takes out the keys and tosses them to Dean. He was glad to finally have his brother back and just hoped that his brother and girlfriend would get along. He wanted to marry her and his brother to like her.

Dean drives them all to the nearest hotel and they settle in for the night.
