Chapter 6: Woman in White Part 3
The Jericho library whose lights seemed to be nonexistent currently had two occupants within it. Their names were Sam Winchester and Jessica Moore.
Jessica had a hold of Sam's arm as he typed as she layed her head on his shoulder watching the disappointment come over his face. He typed in Female Murder Hitchhiking then he typed in Female Murder Centennial Highway to the Jericho Herald search box and got 0 results both times.
"Maybe you need to look for a different term," she said looking as if in deep thought. "What's the opposite of murder?"
"Suicide but what does that... oh."
"Yes, oh. Try replacing the word murder with suicide and see what comes up."
He tries that and an article from the 1980s dated April 25, 1981, came up entitled Suicide on Centennial.
He kisses the top of her head, and she moves her head away to kiss him happy to finally get something.
"You did it Jess! What would I do without you?"
"Oh, I don't know. Crash and burn. What does it say?"
Sam turns the computer so she can see the entire article and she reads while Sam summarizes it.
"This was 1981. Constance Welch, twenty-four years old, jumps off Sylvania Bridge, drowns in the river. They think it happened because she found her children dead in the bathtub where she left them unattended for a few minutes."
As he was talking, Jessica zeroed in on the picture of the Sylvania bridge and it looked quite familiar, so she voiced her thoughts.
"Get that printed out. We have to check out that bridge as soon as possible."
Since the police officers were not leaving anytime soon from where they parked a mile away where they could see the bridge, they decided to get the clothes they had worn already cleaned at the laundromat. Once that was done, they all headed back to the crime scene at dawn to discover they had left with the victim Troy's car having been towed away.
Once Dean parks at the end of the bridge, they get out and began to look for anything and everything that would help them solve the case. They lean against the railing and look at the choppy river below.
"So this is where Constance took the swan dive," Dean comments as Jessica leans toward him as she flashes her flashlight along the river along where he is looking as well.
"This was also the place where the girl you questioned Amy's boyfriend Troy went missing," Jessica adds.
"So you think Dad would have been here?" Sam asks.
"Well, he's chasing the same story and we're chasing him," Dean answers, not really knowing the real answer himself as Sam and Jessica trail behind him.
"Okay, so now what?"
"Now we keep digging until we find him. Might take a while," Dean replies in an even tone.
"Dean, I told you, I've gotta get back by Monday-"
Dean turns around with sadness and regret in his eyes, sorry that he even took his brother away from his life in college in the first place. He did not think he could handle solving the case and facing their dad alone with the predicament he was in. He did not want to see the disappointment when he found out a supernatural creature got the drop on him and that he did not get to kill it while he had a chance.
"Monday, right. The interview. Yeah, I forgot. You're really serious about this, aren't you? You think you're just going to become some lawyer? Marry your girl?"
"What's wrong with him wanting normal-"
"Stay out of this Jessica," Sam replied to Jessica before turning to Dean again. Jessica stayed quiet knowing he was frustrated or mad when he called her by her full first name but promised herself she would intervene if things came to blows. "Maybe, why not?"
"Does Jessica know the truth about you? I mean, does she know about the things you've done?"
"No, and she's not ever going to know."
"Hold up. What don't I know?"
Sam looks towards her and regret shows that quickly fades in the blink of an eye. "Long Story."
"Well, that's healthy. You can pretend all you want, Sammy. But sooner or later you're going to have to face who you really are," Dean said as he stopped, then turned and begin walking again.
"And who's that?"
"You're one of us," Dean answers nonchalantly.
Sam gets in front of his brother to confront him beyond frustrated now as he grabs his arm.
"No, I'm not like you. This is not going to be my life!" Sam said, raising his voice.
"You have a responsibility-"
"To Dad? And his crusade," Sam said cutting him off. "If it weren't for pictures, I wouldn't even know what Mom looks like. And what difference would it make? Even if we do find the thing that killed her, Mom's gone. And she isn't coming back."
Without warning, Dean shoves his brother into the railing of the bridge by his collar, anger fading just as easily. "Don't talk about her like that."
At that moment, Jessica intervenes by trying to break them apart, so Dean shoves her hand away and gives Sam a mild shove then walks away from both.
"Guys," he calls them with urgency in his tone. Up ahead there is a woman in white presumably Constance, standing barefoot on the railing of the bridge looking like she is about to jump. When Sam and Jessica come up to him, the lady turns her head and looks at them then looks away and jumps plummeting out of sight.
They ran to the railing and looked over. Constance was nowhere in sight.
Dean was the first to speak. "Where'd she go?!"
"I don't know," Sam whispered.
"She is probably a spirit or ghost that can disappear when they want," Jessica whispered.
At the end of the bridge, they hear the impala's engine turn on along with the headlights and turn toward it.
Dean stares dumbfounded. "What the-"
"Who's driving your car?" Sam asks and Dean who never once took his eyes from his car, shows them the keys by jingling them in front of himself.
The car suddenly lurches toward them, and they take off running away from it. Sam and Dean jump over the railing. Jessica drops her flashlight in a hurry and jumps onto a metal beam and shimmers herself up on it and then looks down where Sam caught himself now hanging onto a lower beam.
"Jess?! Jess!" Sam shouts. "Dean?! Dean!"
"I'm right up here," Jessica shouts back. "Where's Dean- oh no."
She stares down at the body barely noticeable through the dark that just came up out the edge of the river in dread. "Dean!"
Dean suddenly takes a deep breath and wakes up looking up at us looking annoyed that he was the only one who did not think to catch himself.
"What?"
"Hey! Are you alright?" Jessica and Sam ask in chorus.
He holds up a hand in an A-OK sign and starts to get up. "I'm super."
Sam scoots away from the edge as he laughs relieved as Jessica shimmies her way back down and took his outstretched hand and pulled him up into a heartfelt kiss glad that he was okay. She then goes to help Dean up the steep embankment with her flashlight to light the way.
"Hug?" he asked once he got to solid ground. She gives him a look as if to say don't you dare but he does anyway.
"Ugh, gross! Get off of me. Sam, help me!"
Dean just rubs the river sludge into her hair and then hugs her again, this time tightly getting it all over her front and in the middle of her back where his arms are.
Sam comes up to them laughing at the mess that is now on Jessica who crosses her arms and scowls at Dean. "This is...ha ha...priceless! Can I get a picture?"
"Don't you dare," Jessica said, annoyance fading to be replaced with fondness from Sam's laugh. She acquiesced after a few minutes hoping to see him laugh more often and if a picture could do that too so be it. "Take it but only this once."
While Sam snapped the photo, Dean walks pass them to examine his car.
"Your car all right?"
"Yeah, whatever she did to it, seems all right now," Dean said looking around angrily hoping that the lady could hear his next statement. "That Constance chick, what a bitch!" He proceeds to sit on the hood of the car glaring at nothing in particular.
"Well, she doesn't want us digging around, that's for sure," Sam said in response as he and Jessica settle next to him on the hood. "So where's the job go from here, genius?"
In frustration, Dean throws his hands up as if to say he does not know and then shakes his muddy hands uselessly to flick some of the mud off but fails.
Sam grimaces and turns toward us. "You guys smell like a toilet."
Jessica responds with a "Bite me." to which he replies not missing a beat "Maybe I will after you take a shower." to which Dean just laughs and looks down.
Jessica got off the hood and faced Sam to go in for a hug and Sam eluded her try by running away but she eventually caught him.
"Aw Jess! Come on."
