Chapter 10: Ultrasound Checkups and Bad Arguments Part 1

"Get that stuff away from me," Dean said miserably to Sam the next day as he was heaving vomit into the toilet bowl after he picked him and Jessica up from their apartment building the night before. "I never want to see food again. Oh god, here it comes again-"

Jessica told Sam to get breakfast for them all and she would see if Dean could keep it down and he tried to eat it, but it just would not stay down. Sam had also brought some crackers and ginger ale and was coming over to hand it over to his brother who held up his hand in a stop motion as he rested his forehead on his forearm from his perch on the floor by the toilet seat. Jessica was rubbing his back as she sat by him.

"Come on Dean. You have to eat something," Sam says while sitting down on the floor next to them both as he held out some crackers. "Try one. If it doesn't stay down, you don't have to eat anymore but you will need to see the doctor who told you if this keeps happening."

Dean lifts his head and accepts one and eats it. Not even a minute goes by before it comes right back up and Jessica rubs his back and tells him to let it all out.

"That's it! I'm calling you a doctor," Sam said as he got up from his position on the floor. "Do you have the doctors phone number? Email? Anything?"

"Her card is in my leather jacket. Name, everything...it's all...all on there," Dean responds still sounding miserable.

Sam goes into the other room, locates the card, and dials the number as seen on the card and began talking on the phone. When he finishes, he rushes back into the bathroom to find his girlfriend and brother in the same position.

"She said she can see you as soon as today. Think you can stand?" Without answering, Dean begins to stand up but nearly falls over in a face plant if Sam did not catch him. "That's a no then. Jess, help me get him to the car. I'll ride in the back with him, but I need you to drive."

Jessica goes over and gets on one side and begins to help. "I haven't driven in ages. What if I mess up?"

"Then you face my brother's wrath," Sam said jokingly with a laugh in his tone but then more seriousness. "You can do it!"

When they got to the car, Sam got in back as he instructed Jessica to lay Dean in a prone position, so he was laying down. As she got ready to get him into the backseat, he stopped her with his next statement.

"Sam's right, you can do it," he said as he got his car keys out of his pocket and pressed them into her palm. "I don't let just anyone drive my car, but I trust you."

He turned his head to look her in the eyes to tell her he meant it and that's when she gave in. She lost as soon as he looked at her. After getting him situated in the back next to Sam, she got in the driver's seat and took a deep breath before buckling the seatbelt and checking out everything before proceeding. She looked into the mirror so she could see into the backseat where they were.

What she saw made her heart melt. Sam had made Dean lie down on his lap while he ran soothing fingers through his hair while his other hand kept checking for fever. It made her wish she had a sibling at times like this. She had gained one just by knowing her boyfriend Sam and for that matter his brother Dean. She decides to close off her mind and brings up the GPS on her phone.

"So, what's the address?" she asked and begin to type it into her phone as Sam gives it to her and then she backs the car out of the parking spot in front of the hotel they stayed at. She puts the car into drive once the GPS begins to speak out directions. "Here we go."

Without incident they got there safely but Dean refused to be helped when they got there. He told them he did not want the doctor to see him this way and that she was a family friend that Dad knew.

"Well, aren't you looking mighty pal-handsome today, Dean," Missouri, the doctor said, correcting herself when she saw both the young lady and man behind him make a shooing line under their chins as she hands him a bottle of water. Dean pulls her in for a hug that she returns as he took it. "Who do we have with you today? Have you told them?"

Dean takes a sip of the water before deciding to answer. "They know. This is my younger brother Sam you were on the phone with earlier today and his girlfriend Jessica. They are going to be the parents."

She looks up at him sadly. "But why? Does your father John know?"

"Not yet and I prefer to keep it that way for now. I want the kid to have normal and stability and I know that they can give it that. I don't want it to have the same childhood that Sam, and I grew up with."

"I see," she said without furthermore as she points at the bed. "Well don't just stand there get up there while I get Joanna."

"But I thought you were working on me today?"

She gets out her phone to call Joanna as she answers: "I am but she's going to be observing so she knows what to do when I'm not here."

"Does that mean you won't be working soon?" Jessica asks as Dean looks at her and then to her for an answer.

"Oh no dear, not anytime soon. She's here so if I have to call out for some reason, she can work on him. She was a hunter before, so she knows what she's walking into and has proven herself trustworthy."

"You should have told us that over the phone," Sam piped in. "If this information gets leaked to the public-"

"Do you trust me?"

"Yes," Dean replied automatically as if he didn't need to think twice. "Sam?"

Ignoring Dean, Sam answers with his own answer. "We don't know you and we sure as hell don't know that other lady!"

"Sam!" Jessica and Dean shout his name in chorus.

"No! After this is all over, Jessica and I are done with you Dean!"

"I did not say that to you," Jessica said putting her hand on Dean's arm and looking him in the eyes before turning to Sam. "He is your brother! Apologize now!"

"I will not apologize until he gets another doctor."

Dean who now looked smaller than he was layed down on his back on the bed and pulled his shirt up. "Let's just get this over with."

"Sam, he didn't mean it."

"Yes, he did. I, uh, I-"

Suddenly a young and pretty lady with blonde hair comes into the room in a rush. "I got your phone call Missouri, and I got back here again as soon as I could," She took in the atmosphere of the room. "Did I miss something?"

"Nothing. I'm Jessica," Jessica introduces herself and Sam who is still fuming. "And this is my boyfriend Sam or not boyfriend after today."

Joanna looks at her confused as she shakes their hands and turns to the one on the bed who is visibly upset. Her first thought when she saw him was that he was very goodlooking. "And who's the patient?"

Jessica comes to Dean's rescue when he doesn't answer but sits back up off the bed. "That's Dean, Sam's older brother."

Joanna extended her hand for him to shake but instead of doing that he turned it over and pressed one gentle kiss to the back of her hand. He gave her a gentle smile before deciding to lay back down on the bed again.

Sam smacked the side of his head after he had layed down. "Stop flirting."

Dean did not come back with a comeback to defend himself but stayed quiet and put an arm over his eyes. "Let's just get this done."

Feeling flustered from the touch that was different to anything else she had ever felt before excused herself from the room after introducing herself to them. "My name is Joanna Harvelle but my friends call me Jo for short and I'm here to observe. Everything you say in this room is confidential and you have our word it will not leave this room. I like to become not only your doctor but your friend as well if you'll let me. Oh-I forgot to get some gloves and my notebook in my hurry. Feel free to address me as Jo."

She comes back into the room and takes a seat nearby to see Missouri sanitizing the wand that was connected to a monitor and applying gel to Dean's stomach.

Seeing that the patient was still visibly upset she decided to put a smile back on his face if only for the time being.

"This your first?"

That gets her a nod and a sad laugh.

"I have twins, a boy, and a girl. They are six years old. Would you like to see some photos of them?"

A nod and a happy laugh come next. She shows him the photos and tells him the story behind each picture.

"You know, when I found out they existed the first thing I wanted to do was get an abortion. It was sudden and I did not want to be another teen mom statistic but then I heard their first heartbeat, and I could not go through with it. I was afraid of messing up because my mom died after giving birth to me and well my dad died soon after when I was five. A very good family took me in when I was six and eventually adopted me and my kids are with them now. I thank my stars every day that I didn't go through with it when I get to wake up to their little faces every day. My point is that whatever you're going through don't get an abortion because you think you must."

She gets another nod and gets sad tears this time, but he speaks up this time. "What are their names? How are they like?"

"There's that voice I've been waiting to hear," she lets him continue looking at the pictures while she grabs a Kleenex so he can wipe his face. "Nevaeh and Elijah and they are the loves of my life. I cannot keep up with them on most days. My parents love them though. They say they make them feel young again-"

They were stopped by a strong heartbeat that filled the room. Dean tensed and clenched his jaw as his emotions bounced all around the place. He looked at the screen in shock and amazement at the tiny person growing inside of him.

Jessica had covered her mouth with her hand and looked like she was about to cry as Sam held her close and kissed the side of her head. She pushed him away and went closer to be near Dean.

"Is that-" At Jessica's nod, he breaks down in tears of sorrow and happiness. Happiness because he would get to see it after it was born if Sam let him even do that and sorrow because he knew he may lose his brother for good once the pregnancy was over.

"I'm going to take some measurements and then we'll be done," Missouri told him. She tapped on the buttons of the machine and moved the wand around. A few minutes later she continued, "Everything looks good and you're approximately six weeks along. That would put your due date around about July 16, 2006. I want you to take it easy and try to keep your stress level at a minimum." She looked at Sam as she spoke.

Sam was embarrassed by his earlier outburst and quickly dropped his gaze as he felt his face grow hot. He felt like an ass, but thought his concerns were valid.

"I'm going to give you a prescription for prenatal vitamins and something for your nausea that should help with the morning sickness. Jo, will you finish up here," Missouri asked handing her the wand.
"Here you go Dean," Jo said as she handed him a paper towel to wipe the gel from his abdomen. She quickly plucked brochures from a rack on the wall and accepted the prescriptions from Missouri.
"It was nice to meet everyone. Dean if you'll make an appointment in three months, I'll see you then. Goodbye."
"Thank you, Missouri," Jessica said when she saw Dean's lower lip tremble and the tears filling his eyes again. She laid a hand on his shoulder to let him know he was not alone in this situation. She was going to be there for him and hoped Sam would be too.
"Here's some reading material that might help," Jo offered giving Dean the brochures. "Your prescriptions, and this is my card if you have any questions or you just need to talk, please call me."
Dean gave the brochures to Jessica and shoved the other papers and the card into his jean pocket. "Jess, will you make the appointment. Thanks Jo." Dean got up and brushed past his brother and left. He was not in the right mindset to confront his brother right now and needed some air.

Missouri could feel the pain coming from her patient but opted to keep her mouth shut but she was not always going to keep it that way. She had Jo print out copies of the ultrasound and gave Jessica the copies since Dean had left out already.
