Morgan slammed his fists against the door. "Well, I've got news for this son of a bitch. That is not about to happen."

Hotch reread the email. "You're right, but we must be extremely cautious when investigating. No one outside this room can know what we're up to."

The footage is reflected off Kevin's glasses. "I'll keep watching the footage and see if we've missed anything."

"No," Hotch said. The unsub said this is between him and David. I want you to go through Rossi's past and see if anyone could hold a grudge against him. JJ, contact security and tell them that Strauss will be the least of their worries if any word of this gets out. Reid, I want you to review his files and see if anything can help us."

Rossi tried again to break the rope binding his wrists. "These guys know what they're doing," he said.

Penelope shifted. "What do you think they want?"

Rossi glanced at the walkie-talkie. "They want us to pay for something they think I did. The only way out of this is if I can remember who they are and try to stay three steps ahead of whatever they're planning."

Garcia swallowed, "What if we can't do that?"

"Then we'll have to wait for the team to find us."

"Agent Rossi," a deep southern accent drawled, "For once in your life, you will know how it feels to be powerless. We'll be calling the shots from now on."

"Who's we? Why don't you come out here, and we can talk this out?"

A low chuckle came. "Maybe later. Right now, I want to see how well you can protect her. We have a little surprise for you nearby."

The walkie went silent.

Garcia's voice trembled, "What was he talking about?"

Rossi scanned the area, "I don't know. Stay vigilant."

Kevin burst into Hotch's office.

"We found something," Kevin said.

Hotch stood, "What is it?"

"When the kidnappers got into the van- oh, sorry, unsubs, one of them took his mask off, and I caught a part of his face in the side mirror. I'm running it through facial recognition right now."

Morgan leaned into the monitor. Hotch's phone buzzed.

Tik tok agent Hotchner. Agent Jareau should have found a new case by now. You could check to make sure she isn't wasting time.

Morgan's jaw tightened. "How does he know so much about us?"

Emily crossed her arms. "I want to check out Penelope's apartment. We still don't know where it is."

Hotch shook his head. "That's too dangerous. For all we know, our unsubs could have eyes on both their homes. Rossi and Garcia are counting on us to go undetected."

Garcia's eyes darted between the trees. "What could they possibly have left for us?"

"They want to scare us, keep us on edge. Once we get ourselves untied, they won't be able to control us as much."

Garcia's eyes widened. "Over there, in the bushes."

Rossi followed her gaze and saw a bowie knife, its blade gleaming in the sunlight.

"It could be a trap," Rossi muttered, "I can't think of another reason they would give us a weapon."

"We don't exactly have an option. If we sit here with our hands tied, we'll die."

Rossi nodded. "Stay put. Don't move unless you have to, and stay vigilant."

Rossi scooted to the knife using his knees. Just as he grasped the handle, he heard a faint click and noticed a fine wire wrapped around it.

"Rossi! Move!"

Rossi scrambled behind the bushes mere seconds before a series of darts fell, embedding themselves in the spot Rossi had been; he freed the knife from the wire.

"Did I mention I hate the outdoors?" Garcia said, her voice trembling.

Rossi crawled back to her, sawing through her ropes. Garcia rubbed her wrists.

"What if one of those had hit you?"

"They didn't," Rossi said, "Let's just focus on that fact."

Kevin was glued to his screens at the BAU, waiting in the facial recognition software.

Morgan paced behind him. "Come on. Come on."

The computer chimed, and Kevin's face lit up. "Got him!"

Emily leaned in.

"Eric Callahan," Kevin read, "Thirty-four years old, never arrested. His sister, Sarah Callahan, was a victim of a case in which Rossi worked about twenty years ago."

Morgan's brow furrowed. "What case?"

"The press called him The Night Shift Killer. He preyed on young women in a rural area. Sarah Callahan was one of his victims.

Reid nodded, " I remember reading about that case. Rossi wrote a book about it. Hunting a Shadow."

Emily frowned, "So Callahan blames Rossi for his sister's death."

"More than that," Kevin said, "Callahan publicly blamed Rossi for focusing more on being praised as a hero than protecting his victims. He claimed that if Rossi had moved faster, Sarah could have been saved."

"But why abduct Garcia too? Wouldn't one victim be easier to control?"

JJ and Hotch ran in. "Local PD just found Garcia's car abandoned on the side of the road. They called me because I'm her emergency contact. No sign of her or Garcia, but it's a start."

Hotch's phone buzzed again.

Agent Hotchner, I've warned you about chasing clues. Don't go looking for that car. You've already put your teammates in danger, but you'll search for bodies if you keep sleuthing.

"Someone else is involved," Hotch said, "We have Eric Callahan, but we don't know who his partner is."

Emily nodded, "Whoever it is, he knows us. This is coming from someone who knows how we work."

Hotch set the phone down. "JJ, tell local law enforcement to bring Garcia's car somewhere private and search it there. Morgan, Kevin, and Reid dig deeper into Eric Callahan. Build a profile. We need to know anyone he could have been close with since his sister's death.

"Mistakes are a luxury we do not have. No one outside of this room needs to know anything about this case. Let's move."
