Chapter 1: Gray in Lagunica
The acrid scent of ozone and burnt metal stung Subaru's nostrils. His master, a venerable Jed'aii Master, lay sprawled on the polished durasteel floor of the training chamber, a smoking hole cauterizing the front of his robes.
The air, usually thick with the quiet hum of meditation and the soft rustle of movement, was now charged with the crackling energy of a Sith's crimson lightsaber. The Sith acolyte, his face twisted in a sneer of dark triumph, advanced, the red blade humming menacingly.
The jed'aii order, were Subaru and his now deceased master belong to was an order called by others as the grey Jedi by some, they were users of the force, however they belong no neither secf of the light or dark side, as they both dealt in extremes. They, that is the jed'aii believed in harmony of the force, that there is no darkness and light, the use of the force was what mattered.
It was that way of thought that formed this order, to find TRUE BALANCE in the force. In order to be good, one must know evil, in order to be evil one must know good.
Subaru, an aspiring force master, was fighting against this sith acolyte.
Subaru's own lightsaber, its blue kyber crystal fractured and flickering erratically after attempting to redirect a force lightning attack from the Sith, offered little defense. He snatched up his master's fallen Jed'aii sword, its weight familiar and comforting in his hand. The blade, a relic of a bygone era of the Jed'aii Order. However the sith was moved faster than him and was poised to take his head.
The Sith lunged, aiming for the killing blow. Just as the red blade was about to connect with Subaru's throat, the world dissolved into a swirling vortex of blinding colors, the hum of the lightsaber replaced by a deafening roar. Subaru was fully ready to die.
Subaru gasped, landing hard on cobblestones. The rough, uneven surface scraped against his skin, a stark contrast to the smooth, sterile floors of the Jed'aii Temple. Disoriented, he stumbled towards a nearby fountain, the ornate stonework depicting strange, unfamiliar creatures and letters in an unknown language.
He splashed the cool water on his face, trying to clear his head from a nearby fountain, the sounds of a bustling marketplace assaulting his senses. "Where…where in the blazes am I?" Subaru thought disoriented and confused.
He navigated the crowded marketplace, the sights and sounds a chaotic symphony compared to the disciplined quiet of the Jed'aii Temple. He even encountered a peculiar fruit seller, haggling over the price of the strangely shaped, red fruits. It was all so…bizarre.
It was still early in the day, the sun beginning its slow descent, casting long shadows through the narrow, winding streets.
The place he was in was very… retro. This place has no technology at all, they used some sorts of animals to pull their vehicles. They were technologically deficient. Thankfully, his manufacturing parts printer was with him, should he find minerals that could be used to create the parts needed. Because he had no place to stay, no money and is actually starting after calming down from his near death experience, so he continued to wander aimlessly…
Subaru found himself in a dimly lit alleyway as he was exploring this new place he had suddenly found himself in, he had inadvertently walked into the turf of some petty criminals.
Three figures emerged from the shadows, blocking his path. The first, a tall, thin man with a sharp chin and close-set eyes, sneered. Beside him stood a stout fellow with a perpetually grumpy expression. And bringing up the rear was the tallest and arguably most intimidating of the trio, his face scarred and his eyes narrowed.
They took a look at Subaru's outfit and thought he would be an easy mark.
"Your money or your life," the thin man snarled, brandishing a rusty dagger.
Subaru, still reeling from his sudden displacement, instinctively reached out with the Force. "These aren't bad people, just misguided. Fear and desperation drive them," he thought. He focused his will, subtly influencing their minds, gradually weaving a web of illusion and suggestion.
"Well, well, well…look who we have here," Subaru said, his voice warm and jovial, a hint of recognition coloring his tone. He threw an arm around the thin man's shoulder, his grip surprisingly strong. "My old friend, it's been far too long! And there's…" he trailed off, feigning surprise, "…the other two as well! What a delightful reunion!"
The trio exchanged utterly bewildered glances. The tall one scratched his head. "Uh…we…we don't know you, pal," the thin man stammered, trying to subtly shrug off Subaru's embrace.
Their eyes began to muddle, the force reinforcing the suggestion implanted into them, he had to push a bit more.
"Nonsense," Subaru chuckled, his voice growing more jovial. "Don't you remember? We were inseparable back in the day! Remember that old fishing hole? Those epic snowball fights? The pranks we pulled on old Mrs. Jenkins?"
The trio exchanged glances, a flicker of recognition lighting up their eyes. They had vague memories of a childhood friend from long ago, someone they'd lost touch with over the years. Subaru's words, subtly reinforced by the Force, triggered those (fake) dormant memories, painting a vivid picture of a (fake) shared past.
"I'm so glad to see you again, old friends," Subaru continued, his voice overflowing with warmth and sincerity. "Tell me, what have you all been up to all these years? Let's catch up over a bite to eat… you're buying, of course. It's the least you can do for an old friend."
The trio, thoroughly confused but also swayed by the subtle Force suggestion and the ingrained sense of obligation to an old friend, readily agreed. They ended up sharing a surprisingly pleasant meal at a nearby food stall, the tension dissipating with each bite of the unfamiliar cuisine. Subaru skillfully steered the conversation, subtly extracting information about the local area, its customs, and any recent events, all while his "friends" happily recounted their lives, believing him to be a long-lost comrade. Afterwards, they parted ways, surprisingly amicable, the trio scratching their heads and wondering why they felt such a strange sense of camaraderie with a man they'd never met before.
Back on the main street, the sun still high in the sky, Subaru was taking in the sights, he was sure he was not in any system he knew of, the language was also unfamiliar to him (text wise, as he was able to talk it and understand it), he tried to use his communicator but he got nothing, could he be so far the outer ridge that neary a signal could get back? He sighed as he jumped back to the road, as he was sitting on a bridge as he did so he accidentally bumped into someone. It was a young girl with short, choppy blonde hair, dressed in ragged clothing. A small, ornate insignia, intricately carved with a design he didn't recognize, fell to the ground. The girl, seemingly unaware, hurried away.
Moments later, a vision of ethereal beauty rushed past – a girl with silver hair and violet eyes that seemed to glow with an inner light. Subaru was captivated, his heart skipping a beat. He heard her call out for her insignia. It seems the young girl that he bumped into had stolen it from her.
"That insignia…" he thought. From what he had gathered it seems like the insignia was connected to the silver-haired girl. Using the Force, he subtly stopped her. However the sudden, unexpected halt caused the girl to stumble, nearly falling forward as she tried to, but failed to stop herself from falling. Subaru, reacting quickly, reached out and caught her arm, preventing her from face-planting on the cobblestones. "Whoa there!" he exclaimed, his voice laced with concern.
The girl, startled and a little flustered, regained her balance. She glanced at Subaru, her violet eyes wide, a mix of surprise and confusion in their depths. To make sure what he deduced he decided to ask her "it seems you have lost something, what was it?"
The girl shook her head to snap out of whatever she was thinking, confused as to how she almost tripped, it's not like she was a child.
"Uh… yes something important to me was taken, have you seen the girl who stole it from me? Please it is urgent, I don't have anything to give even if you help me, but I would be grateful if you could offer some manner of help" she said.
Using the force he sensed the truth in her words and smiles.
"Excuse me," Subaru said, holding out the insignia. "I believe this belongs to you then."
Emilia, surprised, stared at the insignia then at Subaru. Subaru simply stated, "The thief dropped it as she bumped into me. You are quite lucky"
Emilia was taken aback by his straightforward kindness. People rarely reacted to her this way. Hesitantly, she introduced herself. "I'm Emilia," she said, a flicker of uncertainty in her violet eyes, they went to an alley, she took down her hood "I'm a half-elf." she said, looking to the side in shame of her heritage.
Subaru blinked. "Half-elf eh?" he said. He'd encountered elf-like beings in his travels with his master, however he did not have any preconceived notions about half-elves or Emilia's looks as he didn't know the history of the world he was in nor would he have cared if he had. "Oh," Subaru replied, a genuine smile spreading across his face. "No wonder you're so beautiful! It's a given that elves are beautiful beings"
Emilia froze, her eyes widening in surprise. A faint blush crept onto her cheeks. She was used to prejudice, to whispers and scorn because of her heritage, to her resemblance to the Witch of Envy. Subaru's simple, honest compliment, devoid of any malice or hidden agenda, left her utterly speechless and more than a little flustered and the blush she had reached to the tips of her ears.
A small feline-like creature suddenly appeared in a small burst of light, floating next to her with narrowed eyes.
Then the small being punched him with an uppercut while smiling. Not hard, but enough to make Subaru stumble slightly.
"What the heck did you do that for?" Subaru asked.
"I just had to do something about this unbearable tingle I'm feeling!" The creature said.
"That's the weirdest reason for punching somebody I've ever heard, though I'll forgive you since it was squishy." Subaru said.
"I didn't hit you in the face out of anger or anything, in fact, it was quite the opposite." The being said smiling.
"Ok before that, who is he?" Subaru asked, and he decided to introduce himself…
"By the way, my name is Subaru Natsuki. Not only am I totally clueless, I'm also lost! Nice to meet ya!" He introduced himself.
The creature laughed "When that's how you introduce yourself, you really do sound hopeless. And my name is Puck! It's nice to meet you!"
He held Puck's paw and shook while he smiled, this made Emilia shocked.
"It's very unusual to see someone who can touch a spirit so casually like that. Where are you from exactly?" Emilia asked.
"Uhmm to be honest I didn't even know where I was till you mentioned the name of this city, so I have no clue where I come from, it is very far away" Subaru said, "light-years away probably"
You have no idea where you are, you have no money, you can't read, and you seem to have no one around who can help you…You might be in an even more precarious position than I am…" Emilia said, feeling bad for Subaru. Subaru just waved her concerns, he was just passing by after all, if he found the materials needed he would be able to build a relay to contact the temple or request an extraction. Or if impossible, he could, in time, make a spacecraft. Hopefully he would find good materials to us efor the construction of the parts, but more than that he would need something to repair his lightsaber, he felt quiet…naked without it.
Subaru then at the moment he was going to hand the insignia to Emilia froze, time stopped for him.
The world… it shifted.
A rush of images flooded his mind. Playing in highspeed.
A warehouse. A massacre.
An old muscular man, bloodied and lifeless. The blonde young thief from earlier, both with their guts spilled, their stomach wide open by a blade.
And a woman with a cruel but sweet smile, her blades dripping crimson.
Subaru gasped, staggering back as the vision ended. His heartbeat pounded in his ears, he could feel the blood rushing through as his body went and was readied for fight and flight. The force has deemed it fit to give him a vision.
They're going to die.
Death.
The possibility of a gruesome death.
He didn't know those 2 he had no obligation to stick his neck out for them.
But his master taught him about force visions.
Those 2, they were important on his journey through the force.
His master was wise and had a lot of experience, he was always right (for the most part) and Subaru decided to trust himself to the force.
He handed the insignia to Emilia and rushed off, reinforcing himself using the force.
Emilia blinked. "H-Hey! Where are you going?"
She watched as he disappeared into the crowd, his urgency undeniable, she was taken back by the sudden change in his mannerism.
Puck hovered beside her, watching Subaru's retreating form.
"That boy…" the spirit murmured.
Emilia turned to him. "eh? What about him, Puck? Is something wrong?"
Puck's expression grew serious. "Not much, from what I saw in his mind he is a good guy, he isn't evil or had any negative thoughts of you, I saw that, however, just now… he had the look of someone who was ready to die."
Emilia's breath hitched.
Without hesitation, she ran after him.
Subaru rushed through the streets cycling through all his abilities he had and could use without looking out of place. He readied his jed'aii sword he took from his fallen master and entrusted himself to the force, it, in turn, permeated into him, surrounded him and empowered him.
Each step he took left an indentation on the ground as the beautiful streets changed into work down ones, it seems they were now in a seedy part of this city.
The force guided him to a shack that was, comparatively speaking to the other dwellings in the area, in good shape. The door was slightly open, the smell of blood entered his nostrils.
He slammed open the door. Shocking all 3 people, there was the tall darkinned old man, the petit thief, and a woman who would not look out of place in a exotic dancer club, she certainly had the looks for it. However that didn't matter, she was about to kill them both. Her blade had blood from the big old man, if his wounds are to be taken at face value.
Subaru looked with anger at her… he reached into the force, and used it to hold her by the neck.
"Ugh!" The woman gasped as air was now unable to enter her lungs…
Subaru then used the force to slam her repeatedly over and over again to the floor. The intensity of the slams made the shack tremble from the impacts. The young girl was taken back at the sheer brutality done to the woman. Then again she wasn't complaining after what she was about to do to them. In one particular slam into the floor, the woman had her head thoroughly stuck in.
She pulled herself out and dusted herself… she looked at Subaru who still glared at her.
She looked put out by the experienced and looked annoyed and intrigued in equal parts.
"What the hell did you think you were doing… ya bastard?!" He said as he then slammed her violently into a wall with the force.
The shack shook from slamming her body over and over with great force.
She stood up. She looked a bit winded but none for wear.
"My, what an interesting dance partner I found, say… what color are your intestines?" She said with a sweet smile as she licked her lips.
Subaru felt chills run trough him as he reinforced himself using the force, all his instincts told him…
She is trouble, BIG trouble.
I smiled "don't worry about that, we gonna have a dance that is to DIE FOR!" I said as I charged at her with my jed'aii sword.
Blade meet blade, sparks flew
Face meet face as the lady smiled beatifically, a complete contrast to her previous declaration.
Subaru's first fight in a new world starts now.
