Sorry this one took so long! I've had some issues with writer's block. Like, I have all the major stuff planned. It's the filler chapters that I struggle with. But anyways, I've had Firecracker bonding with her friends enough. How about another solo adventure…and considering she's a spy, I felt it was only fitting to give her a chance to parody some spy movie cliches.
"The kid-sino," Firecracker thought to herself as she approached the setting of her latest mission. The kid-sino was exactly what it sounded like-a casino staffed by kids and for kids. An adult might call it a rip off, but Firecracker mostly just considered it payback for all the other fun stuff adults blocked behind "age limits". Much like the adult versions, the kid-sino was often a place of excitement. A place of daring risks. A place of epic victories and devastating losses.
Which is why it was the perfect place for Firecracker's latest mission.
Recent reports of a recipe for brownies so good had recently surfaced on the playground rumor circuit and Numbuh 100 had set Firecracker to see if she could snag it. They normally would have asked but the owner of said brownies for the recipe, a snobby rich brat who didn't like to share with "poor kids", had refused to share unless kids paid outrageous amounts of money. The brat turning out to be a gambler only made it more obvious that Firecracker, who seemed to be the perfect combination of stupidly brave and yet able to know when enough was enough, would be the one to undertake the job.
So, after throwing on a nice shirt, a blazer, a nice pair of pants (specifically designed to not be itchy. Firecracker had sure about that), nice sneakers and a fancy looking fedora, Firecracker strolled into the kid-sino, a cocky smirk on her face. Once she was inside, she ducked into a corner before activating her ear piece.
"This is Numbuh 451. I'm in," She spoke into the device as she began to scan the room for her mark.
"Exellect, Numbuh 451," Numbuh 100 replied. "Do you see the target?"
"Still looking," Numbuh 451 said as she continued to look over the room. "Don't see him from where I'm standing. Might have to keep looking. Are you sure he's here?"
"Positive," Numbuh 100 assured her. "Reports say that he spends almost all his time here. If he's not here, he's either at home or at school. And it's only about 4:30 on a Saturday."
"So he's here," Numbuh 451 said as she pulled a lollipop out of her pocket before putting it into her mouth. Glancing down at the floor, she saw how it almost looked like one of the toothpicks that adults would have in the spy films she'd sometimes watch for inspiration. She couldn't help but smirk when she saw it. "Heh. I'll have that recipe before you even know it."
"I have a feeling you will. Numbuh 100, out," The Supreme Leader signed off with that and Firecracker headed deeper into the kid-sino. She'd been a couple times before, but never for anything this high stakes. In truth, she was excited. It really did feel like she'd walked into some crazy spy film.
"So sorry my less fortunate friend. But I'm afraid that your allowance money is now mine!" A voice behind her mocked. Firecracker turned around and finally got her first look at her target-Winston Southeast. A fairly rich kid and not someone who many liked to be around. He wasn't even a villain by any stretch of the name.
He was just so utterly unpleasant.
Beyond the obvious smugness, he was prone to random acts of cruelty just because he could. The fact that he was willing to gamble for money and other trinkets he didn't need from other kids only made that fact more obvious. If anything, he just seemed to do it because he liked watching the utter despair and sadness in his opponent's faces after he cleaned them out.
Needless to say, Numbuh 451 wasn't a fan and as much as she wanted to walk right up to his smug face and just straight up punch him, she knew that she needed to lay in wait before attacking. While she didn't have a very high attention span when things weren't exciting, Numbuh 451 knew that studying something before attacking was important. So she could wait. See how Winston conducted himself. How he played. What games he liked. And only once she knew what she was doing would she act.
"Luckily, there's a lot to do," Numbuh 451 thought to herself as she adjusted her blazer. She was not expecting it to be so hot with it on!
As she made her way around the kid-sino, playing some of her favorite games-slots, roulette, War, Old Maid, Uno, Janga, Balony, and Crazy 8's-Firecracker was able to pick up a fair bit about Winston. Namely, he favored Go Fish the most. He also seemed to be fairly decent at reading tells from other players and liked to present the idea that he was always calm and refined. However, Firecracker could see that he could easily crack. And that was something she could exploit. While she often didn't face foes face to face, when she did, one of Firecracker's favorite tricks was to rile them up and lead them into making mistakes to make up for her own lack of superhuman strength that some of her fellow operatives seemed to have. So she had a feeling that she could do this.
"It's time," Numbuh 451 thought to herself. Steeling her nerves, she gathered up her nerves and made her way over to the Go Fish table.
"If it isn't the woman of the hour!" Winston greeted her as she sat down. "I must say, Kids Next Door operative, you have quite a few fans."
"You tend to pick them up when you save them from evil adults and not just lord your money over them," Numbuh 451 replied. She knew it was probably a little early to start up with messing with Winston, but she couldn't resist. And the angered face he made was quite the amusing sight, both for her and the other kids.
"Hmph." Winston huffed before turning to the dealer. "Deal the cards, servant." The kid glared at Winston for that, but still passed the cards out to all the players.
"Not a bad hand," Numbuh 451 thought to herself as she looked over her hand. Already had three 5s and two kings. Still, she knew that she had to keep her nerves down. She could do this!
"First person to get rid of all their cards is the winner. Once you've got four, you can put them down." The kid reminded all the players, most of whom nodded in appreciation.
"We know," Winston snapped with a roll of his eyes.
"You're doing fine, kid," Numbuh 451 assured the young employee, who gave her a grateful smile. Winston scowled at her, but didn't act beyond that. People began to toss bets in, which, much to Numbuh 451's shock, included the brownie recipe from Winston.
"Surprised?" Winston asked when he noticed the shocked look on Numbuh 451's face, causing her to internally swear at not being able to keep her poker face up for now. "Everyone seems to want it and I can always get another. Besides, it's all the more fun to watch you all lose everything just for a chance to get a bit of my family's delicious treats. Now, shall we begin?"
"...You are going down," Numbuh 451 said simply.
"Says you and many before you," Winston smugly responded. "Now then…do you have any queens?"
"Go fish,"
Even though she knew it had only been about five minutes, Numbuh 451 felt like an eternity had passed since she and Winston began their game. Sure, other kids were playing but they had pretty much stopped caring in order to see who would come out on top-the richest kid in the suburbs or the KND's top spy. Sure, Numbuh 451 seemed nervous, what with her constant fidgeting, but in truth, she'd always been unable to sit still. Even when just relaxing, she'd usually be playing with a ball or a rubber band in her hand. While it might seem like a disadvantage, Winston, who watched for player's fidgets to tell what cards they may or may not have, found himself constantly getting thrown off by Numbuh 451's non stop fidgeting as he couldn't tell what was nerves or what was her simply not being able to sit still.
Needless to say, tensions were high.
"Do you have any…2s?" Winston asked as he tried to discreetly wipe his now sweaty eyebrow. He couldn't let anyone see his nerves. He had a reputation to keep up!
"Go fish," Numbuh 451 replied honestly as she tried to loosen up her jacket. She almost wished she wore a dress but if she had to make a fast escape, pants were easier to run away in. "Do you have any…kings?" Winston couldn't help but snarl as he handed two kings over. Numbuh 451 then sets them down and everyone who had gathered to watch gasped as they all took in the scene in front of them.
Numbuh 451 had no more cards left.
Meaning that she had just won.
"Holy fucking shit," Numbuh 451 sagged in her seat. Sure, she'd stopped swearing so much (mainly because adults kept punishing her). But now felt appropriate. She then wasted no time in gathering up her winnings. She made sure to check the supposed recipe that she was given. She didn't put it past Winston to try lying to her.
"You low life thug!" Said rich boy snapped as he slammed a fist down on the table. "You had to have cheated! I couldn't have lost!"
"Well you just did," Numbuh 451 sneered as she turned to leave.
"Stop her!" Winston roared. No one paid him any mind, allowing Numbuh 451 to walk out with no problems. She was so looking forward to trying those brownies.
One week later
"Honestly? I've had better," Numbuh 451 couldn't help but note as she bit into her brownie. Sure enough, the KND wasted no time in beginning mass production of the brownie recipe. While most kids were excited to try it, Numbuh 451 wasn't exactly impressed. Her mom's brownies were better any day.
Still, she couldn't deny watching Winston cry over the fact other kids were enjoying "his" brownies made the mission completely worth it.
Look, I'm still shocked that they never revealed that the kids had their own casino. It would fit so well with the show's themes! Also, the name of Winston Southeast is a double reference. The first is to another KND fic I wrote and the other is a Gravity Falls reference! Anyways, hopefully see you soon!
