The Minecraft Story: The Beginning: Chapter 6

It was pure carnage around the two brothers. Knights and the remaining villagers were falling left and right. The knights were still in disorder and scattered around the entrance. What could they do?

"All knights retreat in the town square!" General Ausmin finally made it to the battlefield. "We'll set up in wall formation!" Command was finally returning to the knights.

Marcus and Franz retreated with the other knights into the square. Most of the surviving villagers had fled towards the other side of Morzen. They made it to the square, surviving carrier slaves were handing out shields to the knights as they arrived.

"I need a shield wall facing that entrance! Swordsmen, stay behind the shields, kill anything that gets too close! I need archers in the rear!" The knights scrambled into wall formation facing the entrance to the square. Marcus was given a shield and was set up in the center-front of the formation. Franz was a skilled archer and took up the rear guard.

Once everyone was in formation, they waited. Footsteps could be heard from the entrance of the square. The groaning of the zombies slowly became closer. Rattling of skeleton bones and the hissing of creepers and spiders unnerved the knights. Soon, a single zombie came into view. He was a young boy hobbling towards the knights. The pure hunger in his eyes sent shivers down Marcus's spine.

At least I'm a shield. He thought. I won't have to be the one to kill him. After the boy, another zombie walked out into the torchlight. And then another. And then another. And then another. And soon the entrance was flooded with zombies, many of whom being their former comrades and slaves. Among the zombies was a mix of creepers and spiders. Skeletons didn't take long to appear and they began shooting arrows at the knights.

The swordsmen and archers ducked down as Marcus and the others raised their shields to block from arrows. The arrows hit his shield. Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud. As he raised his shield, his legs were exposed. Horrifying images of a stray arrow hitting him in the knee, or a zombie biting down on his legs flooded his mind as the arrows continued to crash into the shields. What is the general waiting for? He thought.

Marcus took a risk and peaked around his shield, the monsters were quickly gaining ground. He estimated it would only take about thirty seconds for them to reach the formation. Where's the order for the archers? Is he going to let those monsters crash into us? He peaked around the shield again and they were even closer now. He could make out the details on monsters. The zombies green and bloodied skin. He could see bite marks all over them, some had their guts spilling out, but they persisted. The creepers had sunken and dead eyes. No pupils could be made out. Their mouths were in a horrifying frowning face. They appeared to have no thought behind them. They were just mindless suicide bombers. The spiders disgusting legs crawled through the crowd of monsters. Their eyes glowed a crimson red, they truly were demons. And they were getting closer. Only a few feet and the horde would crash against their shields, and if they broke through, all Hell would break loose. Give the order, please!

"Shields get down!" The General ordered; Marcus ducked. "Open fire!" A flurry of arrows flew past the back of Marcus's head. He could feel the wind traveling with the arrows. The first row of monsters fell to the ground. "Shields up!" More arrows bashed against the shields, but they held strong. "Shields down!" More monsters went down. "Shields up!" Marcus was getting used to the skeletons' arrows hitting his shield. "Shields down!" Half the monsters were already down.

This is the power of Miter Knights! He thought. We are the strongest in the Holy Notch Army! Herobrine's abominations are no match for us! We're going to survive this! We're going to save everyo-

BOOM!

An explosion in the right guard broke Marcus out of thought. He saw his comrades fly up into the air. A rain of blood and bodies crashed down onto them. He looked at the right guard and saw his comrades being mauled by the zombies and spiders.

They went around us? How? Order once again began to break as swordsmen rushed to fight the oncoming monsters. Suddenly, the shield bearer in front of him was hit by an arrow in the side of the head, he fell instantly. Marcus instinctively put his shield back up just in time for two more arrows to hit his shield. However, some of his comrades were not so quick and many were struck by arrows. The archers shot wildly at any monster they saw. Franz was desperately trying to take out the skeletons. Marcus suddenly heard screaming to this left and saw that the monsters had gone around the left guard too.

"Retreat!" General Ausmin ordered. "Retreat to the center of town! This position is lost!" Marcus began to retreat, but he noticed the carrier slaves were struggling to carry their masters' equipment to the center.

Thomas! How could he forget about him? Where is he? He desperately searched for his carrier slave. Was he killed in the initial attack? Did he make it out? Maybe he even ran away? The carrier slaves began to be devoured by zombies as the equipment slowed them down too much. Some were smart and dropped the equipment, but dropping the equipment is a death penalty.

Suddenly, Marcus spotted a familiar face running out from between two houses. It was Thomas. Thomas didn't have his equipment. Smart. Marcus thought. However, Thomas's limp was slowing him down. And between the two houses, three spiders emerged from the darkness.

Thomas looked back in horror. The spiders were quickly gaining ground on him. In the darkness, Thomas tripped and fell to the ground. He looked back and saw a spider leap towards him. As Thomas closed his eyes, preparing for the pain. But he didn't feel pain, he felt a wet liquid hit his face. He opened his eyes and saw Marcus had stabbed the spider before it could land on him.

"Get to the center town now!" Marcus yelled. Thomas got up and began limping away. Marcus got ready to fight the other two spiders when he heard a yell behind him. Thomas had been ambushed by a zombie who had grabbed onto him. Marcus saw an ax dropped by one of the other carrier slaves.

"Thomas!" Marcus yelled as he picked up the ax. Thomas turned his head. "Catch!" Marcus threw the ax to Thomas just as a spider jumped onto Marcus. He was pinned to the ground, but he managed to use his sword to block the spider from biting him. However, the other spider walked to Marcus's side, and he had to use his other hand to grab the spiders neck before it could also bite him.

The two spiders thrashed around, trying to bite him. If this kept up any longer, he would be engulfed by the horde of monsters still attacking the remaining knights and slaves. There was nothing he could do, and he was losing strength fast.

Suddenly, Thomas plunged the ax into the spider on the side of Marcus. With his hand now free, Marcus punched the other spider off of him and stabbed it in the head. The two men stood in place for a second, exhausted.

"Thank you Thomas," Marcus said through heavy breathing.

"You're welcome master," Thomas said also through heavy breathing.

Marcus looked over and saw the other monsters took notice of them and began moving towards them. An arrow was shot into Marcus's left arm. He looked and saw the arrow had barely passed by his armor. Lucky me. He thought. He didn't have time for this. He sheathed his sword and threw Thomas onto his back and began to run.

Adrenaline was rushing through Marcus. He couldn't feel the pain in his arm, his legs, or anywhere. He just ran. He ran as fast as he could to catch up with the rest of the knights. He ran. And he ran. And he ran. And he ran. Until finally, he caught up with the rest of knights in the center near the Town Hall.

However, something was wrong. The villagers began to run back towards the monster hordes. They continued to scream, "The demons have returned!" The knights stopped the villagers before they could run all the way back to the square. Now, there was even more disorganization. Knights were trying to stop the fleeing villagers. Some people broke down on the ground. Everyone was screaming.

Marcus placed Thomas down and tried to find Franz, but he overheard a villager, "Those monsters are in every part of town, we have nowhere to run, they've blocked every exit!"
Marcus finally began to understand what happened in the square. The monsters didn't flank around them. The monsters have the entire village surrounded.
