The Minecraft Story: The Beginning: Chapter 14
The gates were down. The Miter Knights charged into the village of Zamafar with a mighty rage. They were there to avenge the fallen villages.
Marcus was one of the first to go through the burned gate. It would take a while for everyone to get in because it was a bottleneck. He knew these first moments were crucial to deciding whether he lives or dies.
Several armed soldiers appeared in front of them, dropping what appeared to be buckets of water and withdrawing their swords. The opposing knights and southerners sized each other up, they didn't attack yet, the knights wanted as many of their own to make it through before the fighting began.
Suddenly, arrows came raining down on top of them and a few knights were killed. They looked up to see the wall archers shooting straight down at them. The sheildmen raised their shields to block from the incoming arrows. Marcus and the others ducked under the shields. That's when the soldiers attacked.
Damn savages. He thought as the soldiers quickly approached. The shields will be too occupied to defend against the attack. I'll have no protection; I have to be careful.
A soldier made eye contact with Marcus and charged toward him. Marcus got into a fighting stance. Screams and arrows could be heard all around him, but all he focused on was the incoming enemy soldier. He was a burly and muscular man. He had full iron armor on, so he had to be selective of where he stuck the soldier.
I'm ready. He thought. I can beat this heretic.
The enemy soldier stuck the first blow as his sword came down onto Marcus's sword. He managed to block the attack. He underestimated the strength of the enemy, and his sword went down to his feet for a moment. The enemy attempted to swing for Marcus's neck, but he managed to pull his head back enough and the sword narrowly missed.
Marcus felt the wind caused by the sword breeze by his throat. It was time for him to strike. He swung at the enemy, but his sword was blocked. He tried again, but it too was blocked. The enemy tried to take a step back to goat Marcus into leaving the safety of the shield. Marcus didn't take the bait and took a moment to look back at the shieldman.
He was visibly nervous. He knew if Marcus died, he would die too, whether it be a sword to the front or an arrow to the back. He saw several other knights fighting within the confined space of the shield. Someone would have to deal with the archers soon, if they wanted the full mobility to attack the enemy.
The enemy saw he was not taking the bait and went in for another attack. Marcus tried to figure out a way he could get the upper hand. He looked around for something he could use, but then he saw the dirt under his feet. This village didn't seem to have proper cobblestone roads like they had. This is just what he needed.
He grabbed a handful of dirt with his left hand and threw it into the eyes of the enemy just as he reached him. The enemy was in the middle of a swing, but the dirt caused him to miss Marcus entirely. This was his chance. The enemy made a desperate attempt to block the attack he knew that was coming, but in his temporary blindness, he was defenseless. Marcus carefully placed his sword on the enemy's neck, just above where he attempted to block. He slid the sword along the enemy's throat, causing the enemy to start choking on his own blood. The enemy dropped his sword to put his hands up to his throat and staggered backwards. He turned around to look at something while still holding onto his throat. Marcus was curious what he was looking at, he looked in that direction and saw a woman. She was crying and reaching out towards the enemy soldier. The soldier fell to his knees and took one of his hands off his throat to reach out towards the woman. She ran towards the dying soldier, but another knight came out of nowhere and stabbed her in the stomach. The dying soldier tried to scream, but all that could be hurt was gurgling and he tried to scream through his blood. And soon, the soldier fell to the ground.
Marcus stood there and stared at the two dead enemies. He wasn't sure what to make of what he just witnessed. This was the first person he had ever killed; this should have been a glorious achievement. He had vanquished a non-believing heretic. But he felt nothing inside. He was soon snapped back when a shield blocked his view.
Marcus wondered why the shield was back in front of him instead of above to block the arrows, but he realized that there weren't any more arrows. He looked up behind him and saw some knights atop of the wall and the archers were lying dead. The knights had their protection back, and just in time too.
Several more enemy soldiers came running out from the houses, many of which didn't have any armor or half, hastily put on armor. These soldiers were completely unprepared for their attack. Marcus tried to ignore what just happened. Once again, he had a job to do, now wasn't the time to dwell on the heretics.
