Chapter 1
(Arriving at USC and Meeting up with Linda)
Harley's POV:
Tuesday…
Pony and I pulled up to the apartment building on Tuesday night. Pony and I were starting our shifts at the library on Thursday. The library opened before the welcome week started next week for the freshmen. Pony also had track practice starting up next week. "Long time no see," I said with a smirk Pony. Pony chuckled. "You've got to stop making cracks like Two-Bit," Pony groaned. I kissed him. "It's one of the things you love me for," I said. Pony shook his head. "Touché," Pony said returning the kiss. Pony and I grabbed our bags and boxes and made our way inside. The apartment was just the same as when we left it. We put our boxes down in the bedroom and started to unpack. "Why don't you call Darry to let him know we got here," I told Pony. "I'll unpack the boxes and clothes while you do that." Pony nodded. "You sure?" Pony asked with a guilty look on his face. I nodded and smiled at him. "Go," I said. "Darry will give us shit if we don't call him and it's already late." Pony chuckled. "That's so true," Pony said with an eye roll.
While Pony gave the gang a call, I unpacked everything. I hoped everything was going fine at home. We had driven almost all the way straight through to school without stopping for a quick three-hour sleep at a rest stop parking lot. Darry was really nervous about it even though we assured him we would be fine. But that didn't stop Darry from worrying. By the time Pony was done on the phone with the gang, I had already unpacked the bags and boxes. I knew we would probably have to go grocery shopping tomorrow and that we left the bare minimum here so the food didn't spoil. "Let's make a grocery list," I grumbled to Pony. Pony groaned. "I forgot we didn't have any food here," Pony said with a sigh. I went to the fridge and I let out a groan. It was full already. "My grandmother strikes again," I said with a moan. Pony chuckled. "Your grandmother has got to stop doing this," Pony said with a smirk. "She knows that we can handle ourselves just fine and we have been doing so since before she came into both of our lives right?" I chuckled and rolled my eyes. "She does," I said. "But that's not going to stop her from going overboard and treating us Greasers like we are a charity case. Let's just be grateful." Pony chuckled as he opened the pantry. "It looks like she stocked up the pantry too," Pony said. "But you're right, I shouldn't be complaining."
Pony and I didn't feel like cooking anything tonight so we just got some brown sugar cinnamon PopTarts from the pantry. "How was Darry?" I asked Pony. "Worn out from classes and work still?" Pony nodded and smirked. "I think we eased his load though when I called to let him know we got here fine," Pony said with exasperation. "He acts like we're still kids." I chuckled. "It's like we are barely adults," I retorted. Pony sent me a glare. "Well, he took care of me and Soda when he was your age," Pony countered. I sighed. "I know, but we're not Darry," I said. Pony chuckled and kissed me. "That can be both a good thing and a bad thing," Pony said. "When are you going to go meet Linda?" I sighed. "I'm probably going to stop by the sorority house tomorrow," I said with a groan. "You can come with me if you want. I don't know if Linda told them I was engaged in the story that she spun about me. We have to make up a backstory though and dress the part of sorority Soc." Pony let out a groan. "I guess I can go with you," Pony said with a sigh. "I think I would feel better if I knew what you were getting into." I kissed him. "I'll try not to get invested in this one as much," I said reassuringly. "And I'll try to get to more of your track meets this time." Pony nodded. "Let's get to bed shall we," Pony asked with a smirk. I grinned at him. "I like the way that you think," I said. "Make sure you grab a condom!" I shouted at him as I went to change into a surprise for him.
Wednesday…
Pony and I rode to the library together for our shift. I was shocked to see Dorthy there because she graduated last year. "Surprise," Dorthy squealed while giving Pony and me hugs. "What is she doing here?" Pony mouthed at me. I shrugged. "What are you doing here Dorthy?" Pony asked nervously. Dorthy didn't seem to notice. "I am getting my MSN," Dorthy said with glee. "I'll be with you guys for a couple of years." Pony started to let out a groan but I elbowed him in the ribs to stop him. "How wonderful," I said with a forced smile and happiness. I love Dorthy don't get me wrong, but sometimes she can be a little much. "I can't wait to be with the two of you love birds again," Dorthy said happily. "Gary is going to be in later. I also want to hear more about your wedding. Also, Linda told me about the story that you will be covering." Dorthy faltered for a minute, the ever-present smile falling from her face, but she quickly recovered. "I made sure that she tried to stick as close to the truth in her cover story for you," Dorthy continued. "I remember you told me Harley that the best lies stick close to the truth but with some slight alterations. I made sure to get some sorority-looking clothes for you to go undercover. For Pony too." I stuttered. "You didn't have to do that," Pony said in shock. "Of course I did silly," Dorthy said pinching Pony's cheeks. "I'm helping out as much as I can. This means so much to Linda, but I've already said too much. I'll let you tell her tonight at the sorority house. I already had the clothes delivered to your apartment courtesy of my father. I told him that you were helping me out with something and needed the best of the best. My father just can't tell me no." I blushed. "Thanks, Darthy," I mumbled. "No problem sugar," Dorthy said. "Now let's get to work!"
Throughout the shift, Pony and I worked to help get the library for the welcome week next week. This whole week was dedicated to getting the library ready for opening. Dorthy and Gary ran us ragged throughout the shift. I had a feeling though that Gary was going to remain a fixture here at the library for the rest of time. It was finally the end of Pony and my shift, and we headed back home. "What do you think that Dorthy picked out for us?" Pony groaned. I chuckled. "Only she and Linda know," I said with a chuckle. When we got into the apartment we were greeted by racks of clothes. "Oh my freaking God," Pony said. I let out a groan. "Dorthy!" I shrieked. "She went completely overboard," Pony groaned. "What did I get myself into?" I asked. "Linda only knows," Pony chuckled. Pony and I went to find our outfits to change into. I put on a pair of white hot pants, a red, white, and blue striped shirt that had three buttons along the v-cut in the collar, a white thick belt to go over the shirt, a white sandals. Pony put on a pair of khaki chinos, a sky blue collard nylon shirt, and brown oxfords. Pony and looked ourselves up and down. "I can't help but feel disgusted when I look in the mirror," Pony said with a look of disgust. "I hate looking like a Soc." I chuckled. "Can't argue with you there," I said. "But it's for the greater good." Pony moaned. "Let's get this over with," Pony said. We grabbed the car keys and headed off towards the Alpha Phi sorority house.
Pony and I pulled up in my truck in front of the sorority. The house was three stories, made of brown brick, white-rimmed windows, and a high ceiling entryway. "This doesn't look imposing at all," I said with a groan. Pony squeezed my hand. "We'll get through it together," Pony said. He leaned forward to kiss me. I leaned into it. It felt good. My eyes hovered over Pony. It was odd seeing him without grease in his hair. To be honest it felt weird not to have my flannel or my leather jacket on. I felt out of place. Like I was going to one of my grandmother's parties to be showcased. Linda must have seen us pull up because she was hurrying towards our car before we pulled up. I gave Pony a help me look. Pony just shook his head in disbelief and let out a chuckle. As I got out of the car, Linda wrapped me up in a hug. "I'm so glad you're here," Linda said. "Good to see you, Linda," I said. Linda gave Pony a wave. "You should not grease your hair more often," Linda chided. Pony rolled his eyes. "Nice to see you too, Linda," Pony said in annoyance. Linda looked at the ring on my finger and clucked her tongue. "You have some good taste, I misjudged," Linda said. "Thanks," Pony grunted. "So why now?" I asked Linda trying to change the subject. "Why ask me to do this story now and not when you first noticed?" Linda sighed and brushed her hair out of her face. "My little sister is going to be a freshman this year and is going to be rushing," Linda muttered. "I'm scared. The reason why I didn't say anything was the fear of retaliation. But now with my sister coming, I need to do something." I sighed. "Fine," I said. "What story did you tell them inside?" Linda started pacing. "I told them you transferred from the University of Oklahoma and that you are a pre-law major," Linda said. "I said you come from the west side of Tulsa and that you are engaged to a student-athlete here." I nodded. "Not too bad of a lie," I said. "But aren't they going to check my records that I was in Alpha Phi and at Oklahoma?" I asked skeptically. "I found a guy that does forgeries and had him doctor some documents," Linda said quickly. Pony raised an eyebrow at her. "You do have a delinquent bone then," Pony snarked at her. Linda rolled her eyes. "Don't you start," Linda snapped. "I'm desperate here." I rolled my eyes. "Just show me around and introduce me to people," I said. "Let's get me integrated." I looped my arm through Pony's and Linda led us to the house.
When we got inside my mouth dropped open. It was such a beautiful house for a college house. Pony must have thought the same thing. "I wonder how much the dues are," Pony mumbled in my ear. "I know right," I said. "You wouldn't normally catch me dead in one of these." Pony chuckled. Linda shot us a glare. Then all of a sudden a girl with caramel-colored hair and olive-colored skin came down the stairs beaming. I slowly reached into my messenger bag and pushed the record button on my recording device. "You must be Hailey and Paul," the girl said beaming at Pony and me. I glared at Linda. She hadn't told us that she changed our names. At least they were somewhat close to our real names. "Hi my name is Cleo," the girl said when she got to the bottom of the stairs. She held out her hand for a handshake which I returned reluctantly. Then she did the same thing to Pony. "Well you're a lucky girl, Hailey," Cleo said. "Your man is a looker." Pony blushed. "Thanks," Pony murmured. "Humble too," Cleo said with a bat of her eyelashes at Pony. This caused my blood to boil. "Let me show you around," Cleo said chirply. Cleo showed us around the living room, kitchen, and where the bathrooms and bedrooms were. When we got to the kitchen, I noticed that there was a big pantry and that there were odd worn patterns in places where they shouldn't be. I made a mental note to inspect that later when people wouldn't be nervous about me. As we wrapped up in the living room, I noticed a door that had a padlock to it. "What's in there?" I asked Cleo. "Oh, just an unfinished basement where the laundry machines are." I raised an eyebrow. Alarm bells were going up. No one would bolt that door just because it was unfinished and why lock the laundry down there? "I expect you to come to meetings and to help out for rush week," Cleo continued. "We would love it if you would be a big sister while you're here. Cleo turned to Pony. "Are you part of a fraternity Paul?" Cleo asked him. Pony shook his head. "No," Pony said with a blush. "I wanted to," Pony stuttered. "But track takes up a lot of my time." Cleo nodded understandingly. "We would be happy to make you an honorary big brother here at the sorority," Cleo offered flirtatiously. "Especially if it means that Hailey would hang around more and be involved." Pony had a panicked look in his eyes. "I….I…" Pony stuttered. I looped my arm through Pony's. "Paul would love to," I said with a forced grin. "He always says we need to spend more time together, and this would give him a good idea of what I do at a sorority." Pony shot me a confused look. "Great!" Cleo squealed clapping her hands in excitement. Cleo handed me a schedule of this week's preparation for welcome week. "Remember this schedule and we look forward to both of your participation and to getting to know both of you better," Cleo said. Cleo showed both me and Pony out.
Linda stayed behind reluctantly because Cleo had to talk to her about something. "I thought, Linda and Dorthy were bad, but Cleo takes it to another level," Pony said. I nodded in stunned silence. "She is sure something else," I said. I made a move to turn off the recorder in my messenger bag. "I just wonder what is actually behind that locked door." Pony shuttered. "That might be the ticket to your case," Pony murmured. "You may be right," I said. Pony and I drove back to our apartment. "Should we get a picture of us in our get-ups?" I asked Pony. "The gang would love this." Pony chuckled. "You're right." Pony and I took a series of serious photos and goofy photos. "We should probably tell them about the story after dinner," I said. Pony nodded. "I might've told Darry that you found another story," Pony said guiltily. I was going to say something but Pony stopped me. "I know you wanted me to hold off but I wanted to warn him, but I didn't say what." I nodded. "I understand," I said holding his hand. "I'm not mad." Pony let out a sigh of relief. "I'm going to make some grilled cheese," Pony said. I nodded. "Then, I'll heat some tomato soup," I said with a smirk. "I like the way you think," Pony said. "Well two minds think alike," I said giving Pony a peck on the cheek.
After dinner, Pony and I changed into more comfortable clothes and gave the guys a call. "Hello, Curtis house," I heard Soda answer. Pony held the phone so both of us could hear. "Hey Soda," Pony said. "Both Harley and I are here." "Hey Soda," I said. Soda chuckled. "What do I owe the pleasure of talking with both of you?" Soda asked. "We just wanted to fill you guys in on the story that we encountered courtesy of Linda," Pony said with a grudge still evident. "Darry told you about the story right?" Soda groaned. "He did," Soda said. "Is it ok if I called the whole gang over so they could hear? They are all a little nervous about the cryptic message that Pony left yesterday without telling us anything." I chuckled. "It's fine," I said. "You didn't even have to ask. I learned the hard way a couple of years ago about keeping secrets." Soda chuckled. Then I heard him call the gang over. "What story do you get Motorbike?" Two-Bit asked jokingly. "It's not a cult again is it?" I rolled my eyes. "No, but I guess some would consider it one." "What does that mean?" Steve growled. "She means it a Greek row story," Pony said reluctantly. "And she and Linda had to drag me into it." Darry let out a groan. "What is that supposed to mean?" Darry asked with concern evident in his voice. I hesitated before I answered but Pony gave me a reassuring look. "Over the past few years some of the freshmen have been disappearing and turning up dead during rush week and their first year in their respective house," I said meekly. "Linda says that the school is trying to hide it, but Linda wants it to come to light because her sister is an incoming freshman and plans to rush." I heard Steve let out a string of curse words. "Where do you come into this honey?" Soda asked Pony. Pony sighed. "Linda told a story of half-truths to get Harley into the sorority," Pony said. "Apparently she called us Hailey and Paul. We are an engaged couple from the west side of Tulsa who transferred in from the University of Oklahoma. The president of Alpha Phi I think kind of has a thing for me so Harley roped me into the snooping so she can work the president." Two-Bit chuckled. "You dog," Two-Bit said. "Sneak some photos of those hot girls and send them my way." I heard Two-Bit yelp in pain. Darry must have slugged him in the shoulder. "Just stay safe," Darry said. "No more mishaps." "We'll try Dar," Pony said. We hung up with the guys.
Pony's POV:
Tuesday…
Harley and I pulled up to the apartment building on Tuesday night. I was still tired from that long trip. Those three hours of sleep at the rest stop in our cars didn't cut it. I was practically a dead man walking on my face. Harley and I met each other on the outside of our cars. "Long time no see," Harley said with a smirk. I chuckled. I knew that Harley wanted to get away from the university especially what happened this past year with all the Manson stuff. I didn't blame her. Plus Professor Adams was mad at her for getting hurt and having to drop out of the remaining shows for the musical. She was one cooky lady. "You've got to stop making cracks like Two-Bit," I groaned. We only needed one of Two-Bit in the gang. But I loved snarky Harley. Harley kissed me. "It's one of the things you love me for," Harley said. She got me there. "Touché," I said returning the kiss. Harley and I grabbed our bags and boxes and made our way inside. The apartment was just the same as when we left it. We put our boxes down in the bedroom and started to unpack. "Why don't you call Darry to let him know we got here," Harley said. "I'll unpack the boxes and clothes while you do that." I nodded reluctantly. I didn't want to get out of work and help Harley. She shouldn't have to do all of it. She practically packed all of our boxes before we left despite my protests. "You sure?" I asked. Harley nodded and smiled at me. "Go," Harley said. "Darry will give us shit if we don't call him and it's already late." I chuckled. "That's so true," I said with an eye roll.
"Curtis household," Darry said wearily. "This is Darry." I chuckled because I finally understood how tired Darry must always feel. "Hey Dar," I said equally wearily. I heard Darry let out a sigh of relief. "You guys there?" Darry asked hopefully. "We just walked in," I said. "Harley is unpacking right now." Darry chuckled. "You're making her do all the work aren't you?" Darry said. I could practically hear his smirk from the other side of the phone. "She told me to call you so you wouldn't freak out," I said annoyed. Darry groaned. "Am I that predictable?" Darry asked. It was my turn to chuckle. "You kinda are Dar," I said with a smirk. "Is everything ok there?" Darry asked. "Yep, just getting settled," I said. I hesitated. I wanted to tell him about Harley's story prospect, but I know Harley said not to yet until we know more. "What's going on?" Darry asked. "I know you are holding something back." I sighed. "Am I that predictable?" I retorted. Darry chuckled. "Afraid so Little Colt," Darry chided. "Linda, Harley's old roommate, has a potential story for her," I said. "I don't know what it is yet, but, I'll let you know if it gets crazy." Darry sighed. "Just keep me in the loop ok?" Darry said with concern. "Will do Dar," I said. "I've got to get back to Harley," I said. Darry told me goodbye and hung up.
When I got back to Harley she was just wrapping up putting things away and making her way to the kitchen. "Let's make a grocery list," Harley grumbled tiredly. I had forgotten we didn't have any food here. I groaned. "I forgot we didn't have any food here," I said with a sigh. I just noticed how empty my stomach was. Then Harley opened the fridge to see it magically full. "My grandmother strikes again," Harley said with a moan causing me to chuckle. "Your grandmother has got to stop doing this," I said with a smirk as I made my way to the pantry. "She knows that we can handle ourselves just fine and we have been doing so since before she came into both of our lives right?" Harley chuckled and rolled her eyes. I love it when she does it. She looks cute when she does it. "She does," Harley said. "But that's not going to stop her from going overboard and treating us Greasers like we are a charity case. Let's just be grateful." I knew she was right. When I looked back at the pantry, I noticed it was full already too. "It looks like she stocked up the pantry too," I said. "But you're right, I shouldn't be complaining."
Harley and I didn't feel like cooking anything tonight so we just got some brown sugar cinnamon PopTarts from the pantry. "How was Darry?" Harley asked me. "Worn out from classes and work still?" I nodded and smirked. She knew my brother well. "I think we eased his load though when I called to let him know we got here fine," Pony said with exasperation. "He acts like we're still kids." Harley chuckled. "It's like we are barely adults," Harley retorted. I sent her a glare. I hated when people thought of me as a kid and treated me like one. "Well, he took care of me and Soda when he was your age," I countered. Harley sighed. "I know, but we're not Darry," Harley said. I chuckled and kissed her. "That can be both a good thing and a bad thing," I said. "When are you going to go meet Linda?" Harley sighed. "I'm probably going to stop by the sorority house tomorrow," Harley said with a groan. "You can come with me if you want. I don't know if Linda told them I was engaged in the story that she spun about me. We have to make up a backstory though and dress the part of sorority Soc." I let out a groan. "I guess I can go with you," I said with a sigh. "I think I would feel better if I knew what you were getting into." Harley kissed me. "I'll try not to get invested in this one as much," Harley said reassuringly. "And I'll try to get to more of your track meets this time." I nodded. I was hesitant about that. I knew how stressed out she was going to be this year with worrying about getting into law school and this being her senior year. "Let's get to bed shall we," I asked with a smirk. Harley grinned at me. "I like the way that you think," Harley said. "Make sure you grab a condom!" Harley shouted at me as she walked into the bedroom.
Wednesday…
Harley and I rode to the library together for our shift. I was shocked to see Dorthy there because she graduated last year. It looked like that Harley was too. She looked like she wanted to melt. "Surprise," Dorthy squealed while giving Harley and me hugs. "What is she doing here?" I mouthed at Harley. She shrugged in confusion. "What are you doing here Dorthy?" I asked nervously. "I am getting my MSN," Dorthy said with glee. That's just wonderful. "I'll be with you guys for a couple of years." I started to let out a groan but Harley elbowed me in the ribs to stop me. I shot Harley a guilty look. "How wonderful," Harley said with a forced smile and happiness. I stifled a chuckle. I knew she was in as much pain over this as I was. Dorthy was a handful and too much. So we made up that cover story last night for nothing, I thought with a groan. "I remember you told me Harley that the best lies stick close to the truth but with some slight alterations. I made sure to get some sorority-looking clothes for you to go undercover. For Pony too." Harley stuttered. For once she was at a loss for words. She usually had a witty comeback. "You didn't have to do that," I said in shock. "Of course I did silly," Dorthy said pinching my cheeks. I hated it when she did that. I felt like I was back at Grandma Curtis's house. "I'm helping out as much as I can. This means so much to Linda, but I've already said too much. I'll let you tell her tonight at the sorority house. I already had the clothes delivered to your apartment courtesy of my father. I told him that you were helping me out with something and needed the best of the best. My father just can't tell me no." Harley blushed. "Thanks, Darthy," Harley mumbled. "No problem sugar," Dorthy said. "Now let's get to work!"
Throughout the shift, Harley and I worked to help get the library for the welcome week next week. This whole week was dedicated to getting the library ready for opening. Dorthy and Gary ran us ragged throughout the shift. Gary was still a hippy and had his usual smell of pot and mothballs. It was finally the end of Harley and my shift, and we headed back home. "What do you think that Dorthy picked out for us?" I groaned. I wasn't looking forward to seeing what crazy outfits Dorthy picked out. Harley chuckled. "Only she and Linda know," Harley said with a chuckle. When we got into the apartment we were greeted by racks of clothes. "Oh my freaking God," I said. This was a total nightmare. Harley let out a groan. She was in the same boat as I was. "Dorthy!" Harley shrieked. "She went completely overboard," I groaned. "What did I get myself into?" Harley asked. "Linda only knows," I chuckled. Harley and I went to find our outfits to change into. I hated the way I looked. The ungreased hair and the outfit reminded me of Bob. I shuttered at the thought of it. Dally would've made fun of me if he saw me. "I can't help but feel disgusted when I look in the mirror," I said with a look of disgust. "I hate looking like a Soc." Harley chuckled. "Can't argue with you there," Harley said. "But it's for the greater good." I moaned. "Let's get this over with," I said. We grabbed the car keys and headed off towards the Alpha Phi sorority house.
Harley and I pulled up in my truck in front of the sorority. The house was three stories, made of brown brick, white-rimmed windows, and a high ceiling entryway. It kind of reminded me of the mansions we would see on the west side. Somewhere I didn't belong and I had the itch to get out of there. "This doesn't look imposing at all," Harley said with a groan. I squeezed her hand. At least I wasn't the only one that felt the way I did. "We'll get through it together," I said. I leaned forward to kiss her and she returned it. It felt good and it made my heart flutter. If I was being honest, Harley looked good in her hot pants. But, I knew how uncomfortable she was in them. She didn't feel like herself. Linda must have seen us pull up because she was hurrying towards our car before we pulled up. Harley gave me a help me look. I just shook my head in disbelief and let out a chuckle. I didn't know how to help her. Linda was a piece of work. Linda gave Harley an awkward hug when we got out of the car. "I'm so glad you're here," Linda said. "Good to see you, Linda," Harley said. Linda gave me a wave, which I returned reluctantly. I always hated her. She was snobby and arrogant. "You should not grease your hair more often," Linda chided. I rolled my eyes. Here we go again. "Nice to see you too, Linda," I said in annoyance. Linda looked at the ring on Harley's finger and clucked her tongue. "You have some good taste, I misjudged," Linda said. "Thanks," I grunted. What a nice comment, I thought sarcastically with an eye roll. "So why now?" Harley asked Linda. I was glad she was trying to get to the point of why we were here so we could get out quickly. "Why ask me to do this story now and not when you first noticed?" Linda sighed and brushed her hair out of her face. "My little sister is going to be a freshman this year and is going to be rushing," Linda muttered. "I'm scared. The reason why I didn't say anything was the fear of retaliation. But now with my sister coming, I need to do something." Harley sighed. "Fine," Harley said. "What story did you tell them inside?" Linda started pacing. I never saw her this unsettled before. All the arrogance and confidence were gone from her demeanor. "I told them you transferred from the University of Oklahoma and that you are a pre-law major," Linda said. "I said you come from the west side of Tulsa and that you are engaged to a student-athlete here." Harley nodded. "Not too bad of a lie," Harley said. She was right. As long it toed the line between fibbing and honesty. "But aren't they going to check my records that I was in Alpha Phi and at Oklahoma?" Harley asked skeptically. "I found a guy that does forgeries and had him doctor some documents," Linda said quickly. I raised an eyebrow at her. "You do have a delinquent bone then," I snarked at her. Linda rolled her eyes. "Don't you start," Linda snapped. "I'm desperate here." Harley rolled her eyes. I knew I was in it when we got home. "Just show me around and introduce me to people," Harley said. "Let's get me integrated." Harley looped her arm through mine and Linda led us to the house.
When we got inside my mouth dropped open. It was such a beautiful house for a college house. Harley must have thought the same thing. She had a deer-in-the-headlights look. "I wonder how much the dues are," I mumbled in her ear. "I know right," Harley said. "You wouldn't normally catch me dead in one of these." I chuckled. It was the same for me here. This made our apartment look tiny, like a shoebox. Linda shot us a glare. Then all of a sudden a girl with caramel-colored hair and olive-colored skin came down the stairs beaming. "You must be Hailey and Paul," the girl said beaming at Harley and me. Harley shot a glare at Linda. I wasn't surprised that Linda had kept a detail from us. She was still the same Linda after all. "Hi my name is Cleo," the girl said when she got to the bottom of the stairs. She held out her hand for a handshake which Harley returned reluctantly. She acted like Cleo was someone with cooties. Then she did the same thing to me. "Well you're a lucky girl, Hailey," Cleo said. "Your man is a looker." I blushed. I wasn't used to girls hitting on me. Soda usually got all the attention. "Thanks," I murmured. "Humble too," Cleo said with a bat of her eyelashes at me. I could tell this was making Harley jealous. I hoped this girl wasn't going to keep it up. "Let me show you around," Cleo said chirply. The tour made my head feel like it was going to explode. There were so many hallways. If I didn't have a tour, I would get lost. Heck, I think I would still get lost. "What's in there?" Harley asked Cleo pointing to a locked door. "Oh, just an unfinished basement where the laundry machines are." Harley raised an eyebrow. I just Harley didn't push too hard. "I expect you to come to meetings and to help out for rush week," Cleo continued. "We would love it if you would be a big sister while you're here." Cleo turned to me. "Are you part of a fraternity Paul?" Cleo asked me. I shook my head. "No," I said with a blush. "I wanted to," I stuttered trying to come up with a convincing lie. "But track takes up a lot of my time." Cleo nodded understandingly. "We would be happy to make you an honorary big brother here at the sorority," Cleo offered flirtatiously. "Especially if it means that Hailey would hang around more and be involved." I started to panic. "I….I…" I stuttered. Harely looped an arm through mine. "Paul would love to," Harley said with a forced grin. I looked at her in shock. What was she doing? "He always says we need to spend more time together, and this would give him a good idea of what I do at a sorority." "Great!" Cleo squealed clapping her hands in excitement.
I was so glad to get out of there. Cleo was so outrageous and made me uncomfortable. "I thought, Linda and Dorthy were bad, but Cleo takes it to another level," I said. Harley nodded in stunned silence. "She is sure something else," Harley said. "I just wonder what is actually behind that locked door." I shuttered. "That might be the ticket to your case," I murmured. "You may be right," Harley said. Harley and I drove back to our apartment. "Should we get a picture of us in our get-ups?" Harley asked me. "The gang would love this." I chuckled. "You're right," I said. Pony and I took a series of serious photos and goofy photos. "We should probably tell them about the story after dinner," Harley said. I nodded. Guilt started to creep up my gut. "I might've told Darry that you found another story," I said guiltily. "I know you wanted me to hold off but I wanted to warn him, but I didn't say what." Harley nodded. "I understand," Harley said holding my hand. "I'm not mad." I let out a sigh of relief. I was also surprised. If she was Darry, she would try to take my head off. "I'm going to make some grilled cheese," I said. Harley nodded. "Then, I'll heat some tomato soup," Harley said with a smirk. "I like the way you think," I said. "Well two minds think alike," Harley said giving me a peck on the cheek.
After dinner, Harley and I changed into more comfortable clothes and gave the guys a call. "Hello, Curtis house," I heard Soda answer. I held the phone so both of us could hear. "Hey Soda," I said. "Both Harley and I are here." "Hey Soda," Harley said. Soda chuckled. "What do I owe the pleasure of talking with both of you?" Soda asked. "We just wanted to fill you guys in on the story that we encountered courtesy of Linda," I said annoyed. "Darry told you about the story right?" Soda groaned. "He did," Soda said. "Is it ok if I called the whole gang over so they could hear? They are all a little nervous about the cryptic message that Pony left yesterday without telling us anything." Harley chuckled. "It's fine," Harley said. "You didn't even have to ask. I learned the hard way a couple of years ago about keeping secrets." Soda chuckled. Then I heard him call the gang over. "What story do you get Motorbike?" Two-Bit asked jokingly. "It's not a cult again is it?" Harley rolled her eyes. Two-Bit wasn't too far off. I shuttered remembering the story from last year. "No, but I guess some would consider it one." "What does that mean?" Steve growled. "She means it a Greek row story," I said reluctantly. "And she and Linda had to drag me into it." Darry let out a groan. "What is that supposed to mean?" Darry asked with concern evident in his voice. Harley hesitated before she answered but I gave her a reassuring look. She needed to tell them, or else they would continue to worry and pry. "Over the past few years some of the freshmen have been disappearing and turning up dead during rush week and their first year in their respective house," Harley said meekly. "Linda says that the school is trying to hide it, but Linda wants it to come to light because her sister is an incoming freshman and plans to rush." I heard Steve let out a string of curse words. "Where do you come into this honey?" Soda asked me. I sighed. "Linda told a story of half-truths to get Harley into the sorority," I said. "Sneak some photos of those hot girls and send them my way." I rolled my eyes in embarrassment and blushed. I heard Two-Bit yelp in pain. Darry must have slugged him in the shoulder. "Just stay safe," Darry said. "No more mishaps." "We'll try Dar," I said. We hung up with the guys.
Darry's POV:
Tuesday…
I was really worried about Harley and Pony making the trek to USC. They both were driving their own cars and were going to make a few steps but only a few. I knew they would be tired when they got to their apartment. I was hoping they didn't fall asleep behind the wheel and crash. I had visions of what I thought the crash from last year looked like and shuddered. "You ok, Dar?" Soda asked me while grabbing a beer from the fridge. I sighed but nodded. I was doing some homework at the kitchen table. The rest of the guys were watching TV in the living rooms. The girls were having a girl's night out and went to Buck's. "It's nothing," I said wearily. Soda didn't seem to buy it. He pulled a chair out at the table to sit down next to me. "What's going on in that head of yours?" Soda asked again. I sighed. "I'm just worried about Harley and Pony getting to the apartment ok," I said. "I'm just hoping they don't get too tired." Soda chuckled. "You worry too much," Soda said with an eye roll. "Pony and Harley are adults. They know how to take care of themselves. You need to give them some breathing room." I knew Soda was right, but Pony was the baby of the family and group and I was always going to worry about him. "I know," I said. I was about to say something else, but the phone rang. "I'll get it," I said with a sigh. Soda gave me a smirk and went back to the living room to join the guys.
"Curtis household," U said wearily. "This is Darry." I heard the familiar chuckle of my baby brother on the other end. "Hey Dar," Pony said wearily. I let out a sigh of relief, but I was concerned about how tired he sounded. I knew he would tear my head off if I did. "You guys there?" I asked hopefully. "We just walked in," Pony said. Thank God they didn't get into an accident. I couldn't bear the thought. "Harley is unpacking right now." I chuckled. Typical Pony trying to weasel out of another chore. "You're making her do all the work aren't you?" I said teasingly. I couldn't keep the smirk off of my face. "She told me to call you so you wouldn't freak out," Pony said annoyed. I groaned. "Am I that predictable?" I asked. I'm so pathetic. "You kinda are Dar," Pony said with a teasing tone. "Is everything ok there?" I asked. "Yep, just getting settled," Pony said, but I could hear his hesitation. "What's going on?" I asked. "I know you are holding something back." Pony sighed. "Am I that predictable?" Pony retorted this time. I chuckled. "Afraid so Little Colt," I chided. "Linda, Harley's old roommate, has a potential story for her," Pony said. "I don't know what it is yet, but, I'll let you know if it gets crazy." I sighed. Not again! "Just keep me in the loop ok?" I said with concern. "Will do Dar," Pony said. "I've got to get back to Harley," Pony said. I told Pony goodbye and hung up.
I went into the living room. "That was Pony," I said wearily. "What did the kid want?" Steve asked not taking his eyes off the TV. "He wanted to tell me that he and Harley got to the apartment ok," I said. Soda chuckled. "I told you, you didn't need to worry," Soda teased. "They're adults." I rolled my eyes. "There is a new development though," I said. Two-Bit chuckled this time. "What did Harley get into now?" I was shocked. "How did you know it was Harley?" I asked. Two-Bit rolled his eyes. Harley always gets into trouble with the stories she picks and they always find her at the beginning of the year. "You've got that right," Steve muttered. "Linda her old roommate came to her with a story, but Pony wouldn't tell me what," I said with a groan. Soda had concern flash through his eyes. "Hopefully they'll tell us sooner rather than later," Soda said softly. "Me too," I said.
Wednesday…
I had another long day at work and classes. The positive side was that I got to see Lila in school. We had a small cohort, so we were able to work on projects together and hang out. I was working at the table when the phone rang again. This time, Soda got up to get it. Then he called us to come to the phone. It was Harley and Pony. They were going to tell us about the story, which we were glad to hear about. Especially me. Before I could start talking, Two-Bit jumped in. He sure does live up to his name. He doesn't disappoint. "What story do you get Motorbike?" Two-Bit asked jokingly. "It's not a cult again is it?" "No, but I guess some would consider it one," Harley said. My stomach dropped. This already didn't sound good. "What does that mean?" Steve growled. "She means it a Greek row story," Pony said reluctantly. "And she and Linda had to drag me into it." I let out a groan. Of course, Pony is in it now. "What is that supposed to mean?" I asked with concern in my voice. I couldn't help myself. "Over the past few years some of the freshmen have been disappearing and turning up dead during rush week and their first year in their respective house," Harley said meekly. "Linda says that the school is trying to hide it, but Linda wants it to come to light because her sister is an incoming freshman and plans to rush." Steve let out a string of curse words. I glared at Steve. "Where do you come into this honey?" Soda asked Pony. Pony sighed obviously annoyed. "Linda told a story of half-truths to get Harley into the sorority," Pony said. "Apparently she called us Hailey and Paul. We are an engaged couple from the west side of Tulsa who transferred in from the University of Oklahoma. The president of Alpha Phi I think kind of has a thing for me so Harley roped me into the snooping so she can work the president." My face grew ashen. Two-Bit chuckled. "You dog," Two-Bit said. "Sneak some photos of those hot girls and send them my way." I slugged Two-Bit in the arm and he yelped. "Just stay safe," I said. "No more mishaps." "We'll try Dar," Pony said. We hung up with the Pony and Harley. "I hope this doesn't end well," I muttered. "Me too, Dar," Soda said rubbing my shoulder.
