Chapter 3

The door opened to reveal a tall Witch with black hair tied back in a tight bun, dark eyes swept over them and she had a serious expression. Carla had a strong feeling she didn't want to get on the wrong side of this woman.

"The firs' years, Professor McGonagall." Hagrid said.

"Thank you Hagrid. I will take them from here." She said and guided the First Years in. "Now, this way, I will be taking you to where you will wait until it is time for the Sorting."

A few First Years shared confused or worried looks, others didn't seem bothered. Mike glanced at Will who was next to him and they both smiled, while not knowing exactly what would happen, their siblings had told them that the Sorting was nothing to worry about.

"Don't worry, no matter how this ends up, you know we'll find ways to talk and see each other." Will whispered.

Mike returned the smile at that. "I know, still, it'd be cool if we did end up in the same House. If we all did."

He glanced at Dustin and Lucas. They fell quiet and listened to McGonagall again as they stood in a chamber just off the Entrance Hall, near the large double doors they had seen which undoubtedly led into the Great Hall.

"Now, while we are setting everything up I'll expect you to make yourselves presentable." She remarked. "There are four Houses here at Hogwarts, in alphabetical order they are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Now each house has produced Witches and Wizards of renown and no one house is superior to any other."

She paused and sent a sharp glare at Troy and James, both of whom gave derisive snorts at that remark.

It was not long after this, following some time alone to prepare themselves that they were then led into the Great Hall and all was set up, the First Years were all in awe of their surroundings, the Great Hall was certainly incredible for them all and this was only their first night, they hadn't even been sorted yet. As they walked down the aisle, Mike scanned some of the tables and noted Nancy seated at the Gryffindor table, she gave him a small smile as their eyes met. He nudged Will to draw his attention to Jonathan, seated a little further along the bench from Nancy, they were both fifth year Gryffindor Prefects. Casting a glance at the Slytherin table he took note of Steve Harrington, the male fifth year Prefect, but the only familiar face there. Only three others stood out, all fifth years girls, two of them Prefects. The first was the Ravenclaw Prefect, Mike recognized her too. She was the same height as Nancy with a slender build; fair skin, short styled red hair and brown eyes, it was her close friend Barbara 'Barb' Holland. The other Prefect girl was in Hufflepuff, slightly tall with fair skin, rosy cheeks and had medium length red hair, brown eyes and was slender. Seated next to her was another fifth year girl, roughly the same height with shoulder length light brown hair; brown eyes and fair skin, a slender fit build, neither of them were recognized by the boys.

Their time at not being sorted was about to come to an end however as Professor McGonagall lifted up the Sorting Hat and unrolled a scroll and spoke up.

"Now, when I call your name, you will come up and sit on the stool." She explained. "I will place the Sorting Hat on your head and you will then be sorted and can go and join your House table."

Each of the Houses sat at a long table in the room, running down the length of the great hall, each with a banner showing each House's emblem animal and colours hanging above the table. Ahead on the raised section of the hall was the staff table.

McGonagall then called out the first name on her list.

"Anders, Matthew."

The boy went forward and the Sorting began, it was instantly clear they sorted alphabetically by surname. This made Mike even more nervous, he realized that this meant he'd be near the end, if not at the end. The others however gave him a reassuring look and he smiled back, watching as the sorting progressed. Then a name was called that drew their attention, due to them recognizing who it was.

"Bingham, Suzie."

It was the girl in glasses who had been at the Trolley on the train. She was smiling, albeit nervously. She sat down at the hat was placed on her head. There was a pause as the Hat seemed to consider something and then called out.

"RAVENCLAW!"

The girl grinned and, once the hat was removed from her head she made her way without hesitation to the table under the blue and bronze banner. The next name that caught their attention was due to the fact that the boy in question looked rather more confident than most, as if he wasn't worried at all and they couldn't help but be impressed.

"Bonderenko, Ilya."

The boy who stepped forwards had obvious Slavic features while being pale skinned, with grey eyes, black hair and had an athletic look to him, a future Quidditch Player if ever there was one.

The hat took quite a while before sorting him too into Ravenclaw.

Then came the moment that drew the attention of all four boys, the first of them.

"Byers, William."

Will swallowed nervously, walking up to the stool, doing his best to ignore the whispers from behind him. He sat down and saw their stares, before the hat was placed on his head and slipped down over his eyes.

"Hmmm, interesting, interesting...there's something about you, isn't there." The hat said in his ear. "Yes, there's far more to you than meets the eye. But where to put you?"

Will swallowed. 'I...what do you mean, far more, I'm just a regular boy, regular wizard.'

The hat let out a chuckle. "Oh such humility, that settles then, doesn't it. You belong in, HUFFLEPUFF!"

The hat called out that last part aloud and the Yellow and Black table applauded politely as Will made his way over, he found himself sitting next to the Hufflepuff Prefect girl who he and Mike had noted earlier. She smiled and welcomed him, shaking his head.

"Nice to meet you." She said warmly. "I'm Vickie, this is Robin."

She gestured to the girl next to her, the other girl they had noted at the Hufflepuff table.

Robin nodded. "Hey."

"Nice to meet you." Will said gently.

He had to turn his attention back to the Sorting then as things continued, sure enough another familiar name was soon called out, James Dante, who ended up in Slytherin, then came a few that he didn't know until finally a name was called out that he could match to a face.

"Hayes, Jennifer."

It was the blonde girl who had been on the boat with Suzie and Hopper's adopted daughter.

After Jennifer Hayes was sorted into Hufflepuff, the very next voice drew Will's attention.

"Henderson, Dustin."

He caught his friend's eye as Dustin went to sit down and gave him a reassuring smile, Dustin gave a subtle nod back before sitting down and having the hat placed on his head. The hat took a little while before finally calling out.

"RAVENCLAW!"

Dustin smiled and as they all applauded made his way to the table, sitting down next to Suzie as they waited for the next name to be called, another familiar face, a rather drastically familiar one.

"Hopper, Jane."

It was the poor shaved head girl. She had to remove her pointed black hat as she walked up, the whole hall broke into shocked whispers as she stepped up, seeing her shaved head. Jane sat on the stool, seemingly trying to be calm, but her leg kept bouncing. Much like Will, the hat seemed to take quite a longer time deciding for her than the others, in fact, now that he thought about it, the only other person who took quite a long time was Ilya Bonderenko.

"SLYTHERIN!"

Hearing the hat's decision, the girl removed it and, seeing no point, she didn't bother putting her own hat back on and walked to the green and silver table, there was silence for a while before some polite applause, but Jane didn't seem to care as she sat down.

The sorting continued with two more familiar faces that they could now put names to being called forwards, Mayfield, Maxine turned out to be the redhead girl who rode the boat with Suzie, Jane and Jennifer, who sorted into Gryffindor. The blonde girl who had sneered at them was Angela Orikin who was sorted into Slytherin. Then finally, another name that made the other boys pay close attention.

"Sinclair, Lucas."

This time, the hat took a surprisingly short time to make it's decision, it barely touched his head before calling out.

"GRYFFINDOR!"

The red and gold table cheered and applauded while Lucas smiled to himself and nodded to the others as he went to sit down. There were a few others until only three students were left, the first was Troy who sorted into Slytherin, then, finally…

"Wheeler, Michael."

Mike swallowed and stepped up to the stool, sat down and the hat was placed on his head.

"My, my...four of you, remarkable." The hat said with seemingly genuine surprise.

'Wh-what?' Mike thought.

"You are just like those previous three...all of them, remarkably talented with a strange talent it seems, so much more to you than meets the eye, as I said with them." The hat continued.

Mike bit his lip. 'That...that doesn't make any sense…'

"It will, in time, now, seeing what's in your mind and heart, I can safely say..."GRYFFINDOR!"

The table broke into cheers as Mike made his way there flushing at the proud smile Nancy sent his way. He just prayed being in the same house as his sister would not lead to him being embarrassed.

Shortly after that he was watching the last person be sorted and take their seat. Soon all eyes were on the venerable Headmaster, Professor Dumbledore as he stood up and smiled.

"I just have a few start of term notices to announce before our feast. First I must remind our older students, while also informing our new students that the dark forest in the grounds is out of bounds to all students." He said firmly, but then smiled. "Now, I also have the pleasure of announcing our new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Rolland Edwards."

Polite applause went throughout the whole Great Hall while the young man merely gave a small smile and a raise of his hand.

Once things had calmed down, Dumbledore then announced. "Now, let the feast, begin."

With that the tables were instantly laden with food, much to the delight of all students as the feast began and the first night at Hogwarts got truly underway.

End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.

For a side note regarding the characters who we've met here and the sorting, regarding Angela specifically, since she isn't given a surname in the actual series, I just used the surname of her actress.
