A very brief reminder:
They both got into Callista's bed. Callista brought Callie into a comforting embrace, and used her powers to soothe Callie to sleep, as well as protect her against any bad dreams. Once Callie was asleep, Callista kissed her one last time and whispered, "Chance, you had better come back to us soon. She can't take much more of this." She then fell asleep herself.
Morning came sooner than anyone wanted. Jake and Felina were woken up by the sound of a dump truck backing up into the salvage yard, rather than the sounds of birds and the ocean waves hitting the beach. Jake was the first to open his eyes and take in their surroundings. He said, "Crud, welcome home, Felina. We are back at the salvage yard." He then kissed his fiancée.
Felina groaned as she stretched, and said, "I guess our vacation is over. I had better get up and call my uncle to see if anything important has happened since I spoke to him yesterday, then make an appointment with my OBGYN to see if I am pregnant. Mind if I hit the shower first, my love?"
Jake looked at the alarm clock and saw that it was only 6:15 in the morning. He fell back into bed and said, "Not at all, Felina. It will give me a few more minutes to savor the memory of these past few days before I have to get started on the pile of stuff that Burke and Murray just dumped. Who knows, I might find something useful buried in there. The TurboKat and the Cyclotrons were built from that scrap, so who knows what I might find?"
Felina walked out of Jake's bedroom to go and find the bathroom.
Jake, on the other hand, got out of bed and pulled on some underwear. Then he looked out a dirty window overlooking the salvage yard. As he stared at the pile of scrap that had just been dumped, a few things instantly caught his eye. He went into his closet and grabbed his work uniform and boots. He put them on quickly, in order to retrieve the treasure he had spotted in the heap. Jake was out the door of the garage and digging into the scrap pile within five minutes, zeroing in on the items he saw from his window. He pulled out three motorcycle frames with the engines and transmissions still attached. The front forks, wheels, tires, and all of the plastic parts were missing, but he could care less. He had three blank canvasses, and he could not be happier with his findings.
Jake continued to search the pile to see what else might be hiding in it. Not seeing anything in the top layer of scrap, he went to get a front loader from the yard to really dig into the scrap pile. Jake climbed into the loader and started it. He drove over to the pile of scrap and carefully started to remove the layers with all the knowledge and precision of a surgeon, separating it into several piles, searching for even more treasure as the pile dwindled. Jake's search was not in vain. He found two more motorcycle frames, although the engines were missing. He kept digging. Finally, after twenty minutes, he yelled, "Jackpot!"
Buried in the pile of scrap were two jet engines that appeared to have been made for a small Lear Jet. Most of the external sheet metal was missing, but the engines were still carefully wrapped. Jake guessed that someone had made an error and accidentally scrapped the engines. Jake shut down the loader and got out to get a better look at the jet engines he had discovered.
Felina finished her shower and returned to Jake's bedroom, expecting to find Jake still in bed. Instead she found an empty room and heard the sound of machinery running outside. Then she heard her fiancé yell, "Jackpot!" She just had to run to the window and see what was going on outside. Felina looked out of the window and saw Jake jump out of the loader and start inspecting two jet engines. She thought to herself, "He is just like a kitten in a candy store out there." Felina dressed and went to the kitchen to get breakfast going for the two of them.
T-Bone woke up and didn't feel Katerina sleeping next to him. He sat up, looked around, and saw her sleeping in a chair. He felt guilty that she had to sleep in that chair because of him. He started to get out of the bedroll but he was quickly reminded of his injuries He winced as his skin and fur pulled at the scabs made by his healing wounds. T-Bone ignored the pain and discomfort, and limped over to Katerina. Once there, he studied her sleeping form and saw how beautiful she actually was. She reminded him of how Callie looked when she slept. Thinking of her warmed his heart. T-Bone whispered, "I'll be home real soon, Callie. Then nothing is going to keep us apart." He leaned forward and placed a light kiss on Katerina's forehead.
Katerina woke when she felt T-Bone's kiss. She stretched as much as she could while seated, opened her eyes and said, "Good morning, T-Bone. At least you are moving, so your injuries can't be that bad."
T-Bone replied, "They hurt like there is no tomorrow. Thank you for cleaning and bandaging my injuries. Ever think of going into the nursing field? You would definitely look good in a nurse's uniform." He winked at her, just to show her that he was still the same old T-Bone.
Katerina took off her blanket and got out of the chair that she had slept in. She then pulled T-Bone into a tight hug before saying, "This is the last time that I get to wake up with you and hold you in my arms." She started to tear up, then continued, "I don't want this to end, T-Bone, and I am going to miss this so much that it hurts."
T-Bone had no idea what to say to comfort her. It was obvious that she was still in love with him, even after telling her that he was engaged to Empress/Callie. T-Bone did the only thing that he could think of at the moment to get Katerina to calm down and stop crying. He returned her hug, and then said to her, "I know it hurts, Katerina, and it is going to hurt for a while, but you have to let me go. I belong to another." He pulled back slightly and lifted her chin so she could look into his eyes. T-Bone then said, "I meant what I said before. You are going to find another tom to replace me in your heart. That tom will love you, care for you, and cherish every moment that he spends with you for the rest of his life. We have become close over the past few days, and nothing is going to change the friendship that we have, but you need to stop thinking that we are ever going to be a couple. I am in love with Empress, and she loves me. You are going to find that special someone, sooner than you think. You just have to keep your heart open and love will find its way in. Ok, Katerina?"
Katerina stopped crying. She knew that T-Bone was telling her the truth, and there had to be someone special out there for her. Katerina finally said, "I will try, T-Bone. No matter how much it hurts, I will try for you." She slipped out of his embrace and turned to face the wall in order to pull herself together, then she said, "We had better get changed and eat something. It is going to be a long day ahead of us, and you are going to be reunited with Empress." She paused for a minute, then said, "I have made a decision. If the Enforcers will have me, I want to be a pilot again. Only this time, I want be on the right side of the law."
"I am sure that they will be more than happy to have you as a member of the Enforcers, Katerina. Felina will make sure of that. I am happy that you have a plan for the future." He turned away from her and starting dressing in fresh clothing.
Katerina stared to change, although she could not stop herself from sneaking a few peeks as T-Bone stripped down. She definitely liked what she saw.
They finished dressing and turned back towards each other. They embraced one more time, and then Katerina said, "It's time to go." They separated and walked to the mess hall for breakfast. They ate in complete silence. When they finished, they made their way to the TurboKat and waited for the time to be right to get in the air.
Callista woke as she felt the warmth of the morning sun hit her body. She looked at her sleeping granddaughter lying next to her. All of a sudden, Callista had a vision of the TurboKat landing on the roof of the treasury building as Dark Kat's tank was blowing a hole in the side building. Her heart filled with dread and worry for T-Bone. She knew that if anything happened to T-Bone, Callie would be devastated. Callista was not going to let that happen. She had just got her family back, and to have her family taken from her again because of Dark Kat's greed was not going to happen. Not if she had anything to say about it. Callista got out of bed, showered, changed, and left her bedroom and her sleeping granddaughter. She went into the living room and found Persival. Callista shook him awake and said to him, "I have a job for you. I need you to go to the treasury building and protect Callie's fiancé. I had a vision that Dark Kat is going to attack it this morning, and Chance is going to be part of his plan. He is not a willing participant in Dark Kat's plan, and neither is the she-cat that is going to be with Chance. If anything happens to Chance during this, Callie will not survive. Callie's bond with Chance is so strong that what happens to one of them will be felt by the other."
Persival understood what Callista had told him. He did not want to see his young mistress hurting for any reason, even if that meant he had to give his life in order to make sure that Callie would be happy. Persival bowed to Callista and said, "I will gladly give my life in order to protect your granddaughter's happiness. I will protect her fiancé at all costs, Milady."
Callista was shaken by Persival's declaration. She knew the Persival loved them both, but she had not realized how far that love went. Callista got down on her knees and pulled Persival into a hug, saying," I certainly hope that it does not come to that, Persival. I know you love Callie, and that you are willing to do what is necessary to protect her. You are the most dedicated friend that anyone could ask for, and I love you for it. Now, please go and keep Chance safe, and be sure to come back. I don't want to explain to Isis how you perished while taking care of your mistress' fiancé." She kissed his nose after speaking.
Persival left with a tear in his eye. He had not even thought about how his decisions would affect Isis. Persival knew that he cared for her, and he thought that she might care for him. He had to push those feelings aside for now. He had a job to do. Persival landed on the roof of an adjacent building and waited for Dark Kat's plan to start.
Callie woke up to find that Callista had left her. She got out of bed and showered. Once she finished showering, she dried herself off and changed into a pair of jeans and a button down shirt. She just wanted to be in something comfortable. Callie then went to find Callista and Persival. She found Callista sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee in her paws. She was obviously concentrating on something really important, since she did not even move when Callie entered the kitchen. Callie pulled out one of the chairs around the kitchen table and sat down. She said, "Good morning, Callista."
Callista snapped out of her trance when she heard Callie speak. She replied, "Good morning, Callie. Did you sleep well?"
"Yes I did, thanks to you." Callie looked around and did not see Persival. He usually sat right by the table waiting for breakfast to be served, but he was nowhere to be found. "By the way, where is Persival?" Callie asked.
Callista did not want to tell Callie where she sent Persival. Callie would not only argue with her about going to help directly as Empress, but it would give Callie yet another loved one to worry about. Callista did not respond to Callie's question. She just stirred her coffee, pretending that she did not hear Callie's question.
"Grandma, what are you not telling me?" Callie asked with a little more force.
Callista stirred her coffee some more. She was trying real hard not to tell Callie where Persival went, and why he was there. Callista finally said, "I sent him out to the house to get something for me." Callista would not look up to meet Callie's eyes.
Callie knew that Callista was not telling her the truth. She yelled, "Callista! Will you just tell me what is going on?"
Callista slammed her paws on the table and stood up, her chair clattering to the floor as she replied, "Alright, Callie!" She looked directly into Callie's eyes and said, "I had a vision that Chance and some other she-cat were going to break into the treasury today. I sent Persival to go and protect Chance. He is most likely sitting on a rooftop right now, waiting for Chance to show up." Callista stalked around the table and grasped Callie's shoulders, forcing Callie to look up at her. She then said, "I know that you are going to want to go out there to be with Chance, and I can't stop you from going to him. I am asking you though to think about what Chance is going to do when he sees you? Is he going to be able to stay focused on his job?"
Callie knew that this was all part of Dark Kat's plan. She had to go out there and make sure that Chance came back to her, no matter what Callista thought. "You are right, Callista. I am going to be out there as Empress, and I am going to make sure that Chance is safe. He is the love of my life, and I cannot just sit here knowing that he is in danger. I'll just have to make sure that he does not see me, "Callie said.
Callista let her go and sighed. She said after a minute, "That is what I figured you would say. Jake and Felina are back from Hawaii and are at the salvage yard. I am sure that they are going to want to help also. Just please be careful, I don't want to lose you. Not after just getting my family back in my life."
"I'm not going anywhere, Callista. I love you and I want to spend time with you. Not just as your apprentice, but as your granddaughter. We have missed over 13 years of being a family together. I am not planning on missing anything else," Callie said as she hugged Callista.
Callista started to tear up at hearing Callie's loving words. She pulled her into a tighter hug and said, "I love you too, Callie. It hurt so much not being able to talk to you, hug you, and laugh with you for all those years. Being able to watch you graduate college and grad school took some of the pain away. My heart skipped a beat as your name was called. I was so proud of you, watching you walk down the aisle and get your degrees."
Callie pulled back from Callista's embrace and asked, "You saw me graduate?"
"Yes, I did. Your mother may have helped me fake my death just to deceive those sorcerers, but nothing could have kept me from watching you grow up and graduate graduate," Callista replied.
"I was hoping that you had been there one way or another, grandma. When my mother told me that you had died, I locked myself in my room and cried for days. I loved you so much that I wanted to die, too, just so I could be with you again," Callie said as tears formed in her eyes.
Callista pulled Callie back into a tight embrace as tears flowed from her eyes, staining Callie's shirt. She eventually calmed down enough to say, "I am sorry that I had to put you though that. I knew that faking my death would hurt you, but I had no idea that it would cause you so much pain. You have always meant the world to me, Callie. More than life itself."
Callie and Callista just stood there in silence, holding each other as their emotions got the better of them. Callista lifted her head just to look into Callie's watery gaze. The only things that she saw in those eyes was the love that Callie had for her, and the love that Callie shared with Chance. Callista pulled back from their embrace and said, "Please be safe, my granddaughter." Callista waved her paw and Callie was teleported to the salvage yard.
Felina was cooking breakfast when she heard a thump from the other room. She turned and saw Callie appear from out of nowhere. Felina stopped what she was doing, ran over to her friend, and gave her a hug.
Callie returned her hug and said, "I missed you. Did you have fun in Hawaii?"
"Yes, we did. We need to thank your grandmother for everything when we see her, " Felina said. Then she pulled back from Callie and said, "You are going to want to sit down for what I am about to tell you."
Callie looked at Felina nervously, since she had no idea what was going to come out of Felina's mouth. Callie then pulled out a chair from the kitchen table and sat down.
Felina took a few deep breaths before saying, "I want you to come with me to the OBGYN." Felina paused before continuing, "I think that I am pregnant."
Callie's face lit up brighter than a 1000 watt light bulb. Callie ran to Felina and hugged her again before saying, "I am so happy for you! I am going to be an aunt!"
"Whoa, Callie, don't go and start planning a kitten shower yet. I am not even sure that I am pregnant. As I told Jake, yes, I am late, and I have never been late before, but I need to be tested to be 100% sure. That is why I want my best friend to go with me. I want you to be the first to know if I am going to be a mother," Felina replied, while holding Callie at an arms distance away so if her bubbly personality exploded, it would not get on her.
Callie was still overjoyed that Felina might be a mother. She said, "Of course I will go with you to the OBGYN. I really hope that you are pregnant, Felina. Both you and Jake are going to be great parents, and your kittens will be adorable!"
"Callie, you really need to bring your excitement level down a few notches. Your whole body is glowing," Felina said.
Callie looked down at herself and discovered that Felina was right. Her entire body was encased in a pink glow. Callie took a few deep breaths, and the glow went away. Callie said, "Well that was interesting. I don't remember that happening before."
"Callie, I am not sure if I am the one who should tell you this, but when you fired that blast at Hard Drive and slept for those two days, as you slept, you were bathed in a glow real similar to that one. You should have seen Chance. He was so worried about you that he didn't rest until you woke up. His fur was so matted that he looked like he had spiked it on purpose," Felina said, and then chuckled.
Jake saw the glow from the salvage yard and ran back to the living quarters to find out what it was. As he ran into the kitchen, Jake said, "Felina! Are you alright? I saw this glow from the yard and I.."
Callie interrupted Jake by saying, "Hi, daddy."
Jake turned and faced Callie, then said, "Please don't call me daddy. At least now I know where that glow came from. How did you get here? I thought you were staying at Callista's?"
"I was. She teleported me here. We were having such a good time together. We took Persival to the zoo so he could meet the mother of his cubs, we were hit on by multiple toms, and Ulysses asked Callista out for a date. I also learned a whole lot from Callista in such a short time," Callie replied.
"Wait a second, did you just say that my uncle asked Callista out?" Felina asked.
"Yes, I did. It turns out that your uncle and my grandmother used to date before she married my grandfather. Ulysses still has feelings for her after all this time. She just needed to give him a little push for him to act on them. It was especially interesting when they kissed," Callie replied.
Felina's jaw dropped when she heard that her uncle had kissed Callista. She had no idea that her uncle was even thinking of getting involved with another she-cat after his bitter divorce from her aunt Adara. Felina reached into her pocket, pulled out her phone, and called her uncle.
"This is Feral," Ulysses answered.
"Uncle, Felina. Jake and I are back from vacation. Has anything happened that I need to know about?" Felina said into the phone.
"No, everything has been quiet here. I actually had time to get caught up on all the paperwork that I had piling up," Ulysses answered.
"You had that much time on your hands, uncle? Enough time to go and look up an old flame, perhaps?" Felina asked.
Ulysses had been drinking a cup of coffee, but when Felina asked him about looking up an old flame, he spat it out, drenching his desk and several important and not-so-important papers. He muttered to himself, trying to save as much as he could, before replying, "How do you know about that, Felina? There was no one else in the shop when I asked her if she would be willing to go on a date with me!"
"Ah, so you admit that you have asked out an old girlfriend. Now what is this about a long, passionate, kiss?" Felina asked, obvious to everyone except her uncle and Jake that she was baiting him.
Ulysses was now frozen. How the heck did Felina hear about him kissing Callista? He replied, "A gentleman does not say anything about his romantic life. I will tell you that I was given a second chance at dating the she-cat that I hoped would be my wife someday while I was in the service. Not that I didn't love your aunt."
"Uncle, Callie is here with Jake and me. She told us about you and Callista, and how you tried to act all proper around her, but ended up acting like a hormonal teenager once you looked into her eyes," Felina said.
"The Deputy Mayor? What does she have to do with any of this?" Ulysses asked.
"Callie and Callista are related, uncle. You can't tell me that you never noticed the resemblance between the two of them?" Felina asked.
Ulysses thought about it for a brief minute. "They have the same hair, the same eyes, and pretty much the same body. If it wasn't for Callie wearing glasses and the birth mark on Callista's left cheek, they would be identical twins." Ulysses replied, "I never thought about it before, Felina. Now that I have, they could be identical twins."
"Yes they could, uncle. Callie was catching up with Callista while we were away. It turns out that they had not seen each other in a long time. Callie saw you ask Callista out, and then kiss her from the back room of the shop," Felina told her uncle.
"Ah, now that explains everything. I expect you back here at headquarters at 'o 800' tomorrow morning, Lieutenant, "Ulysses said, then hung up the phone.
Felina put her phone back in her pocket and said, "I may have pushed him too far this time, and he sounded mad when he ordered me to headquarters at eight tomorrow morning, but I don't care. It was worth hearing him spitting out whatever he was drinking, and then the dead silence when I asked about the kiss." Felina started laughing.
Callie was also chuckling at the Commander's expense. She took a few breaths and said to Felina, "Not that I want to ruin your good mood, Felina, but Callista had a vision that Chance and most likely Katerina are going to attack the treasury this morning. We should get ready for anything that Dark Kat throws our way. You should call your uncle back and let him know what is going on."
Felina had wanted to wait for her uncle to cool off a little before calling him back but this was far too important to wait. She would just have to suck it up and apologize to her uncle before telling him about the attack. She retrieved her phone from her pocket and pressed the re-dial button.
Ulysses answered on the third ring. "Felina, haven't you had enough fun at my expense? Do you want to know more about my love life?" Ulysses asked with disdain in his voice.
"Uncle, I did not mean to hurt you. You have been more like a father to me than my own father ever was. You have always been supportive of everything that I ever wanted to do, especially when I wanted to join the Enforcers against my father's wishes. I had no idea that you cared for Callista so much. I did not know that you dated her or even possibly loved her. I never meant to tease you about your love life. Well, actually I did, but I want you to be happy, and if that means dating Callie's relative, then that is what you should do." Felina paused for a minute to figure out how to tell her uncle about the upcoming attack. She did not want to reveal to her uncle that Callista was a sorceress. It was not her place to do so. She would just have to lie in order to keep that a secret. Felina said, "Callie heard from T-Bone. The attack on the treasury is going to happen this morning. You should get the elite squadron ready."
Ulysses did not know what to say to her. Felina had always been crass, and spoke her mind at all times, even when she should keep her mouth shut. He had to bail her out of trouble more times than he could count because of that mouth of hers. Now she was apologizing for her teasing and telling him about the timing of Dark Kat's plan. Ulysses replied, "I will have the squadron ready for anything and armed to the teeth. Dark Kat is not going to know what hit him when he opens that file. Good work, Lieutenant. Oh, and Felina? You have been the daughter that I never had. Let me tell you something about Callista. If I had not been shipped out for basic training while we were dating, I would have asked her to marry me. She could have been your aunt instead of Adara. You and Callie could have been cousins or something instead of best friends. I love you, and don't you forget it. Now, I need you at headquarters to lead that squadron. I can't think of a better cat to do it."
"Thanks, uncle, but I can't lead that squadron today. I have to make an appointment with the doctor. I might be pregnant, and need to be tested in order to be cleared for duty as protocol requires. I was going to tell you once I found out if I was pregnant or not. Please don't be mad," Felina replied to her uncle.
Ulysses had to think about what Felina just told him. It wasn't the fact that she might be pregnant because he was well aware that Jake loved her immensely. It was the timing that he had a problem with. He had been brought up in an old school military family, and kittens were not to be born until after marriage. Then again, this was Felina, after all. She had always done things her way and on her own terms. "Felina, motherhood is one of the noblest assignments there is. I am happy that I might be a grand-uncle, if there is such a thing. Please let me know as soon as you do. Even if you are not pregnant, I am still very proud of you, Felina," Ulysses said, then hung up the phone.
Felina placed her phone back in her pocket and said to Jake and Callie, "That went a whole lot better than I thought it would. He is going to have the elite squadron ready for anything."
"Good, we are going to need their help if anything goes wrong, since we are down two members," Jake said.
Felina turned to Jake and asked, "What do you mean 'down two members'?"
"Chance is out of the picture, and you can't fight while pregnant with our kitten.." Jake said.
"What makes you think that I can't fight while I'm pregnant!? I can still kick your tail, and I will if you keep talking like a chauvinistic pig! Nothing is stopping me from going out there and fighting alongside my family, pregnant or not!" Felina yelled at Jake.
Jake knew that Felina could and would severely hurt him if he made her mad enough. He backed off and said, "If you think that you can fight without risking your life or the life of OUR kitten, then by all means have at it. You and now our kitten mean more to me than this whole city, Felina. If anything happens to either of you, I am not sure what I will do. I love you, and I am going to love our kitten. I don't want to see either of you hurt."
Callie figured that she had better step in before Felina skinned Jake alive and used him as a rug. She stepped in between the two of them, turned to Felina, and said, "Felina, Jake was only thinking about you and your unborn kitten. Just like any father would." Then she turned to face Jake, "Jake, Felina may be as stubborn as they come, but in a fight, I wouldn't want any other cat beside me. She knows how to handle herself in any situation. Felina would never do anything that could potentially harm either herself or your kitten." Callie now alternated looking at both Jake and Felina while saying, "Chance is going to need all need us all to be focused. Otherwise, something is going to go wrong out there today, and someone is going to end up getting hurt. Now, both of you, stop acting like school age kittens and make up. I'm going to eat something and get changed into my uniform." She walked away towards the kitchen, leaving Jake and Felina alone.
Jake took Felina's paws in his and looked into her eyes. He said, "I know that you can handle any situation that life throws at you, honey. That is one of the things I love about you. As Callie said, I was only thinking about your health and the wellness of our kitten. I am so looking forward to having you as my wife and the mother of my kitten."
Felina looked back into Jake's eyes, and saw that he was sorry he had told her that she could not fight. Felina pulled Jake close, then gave him a passionate kiss while wrapping her arms around his neck.
Jake was surprised by Felina's actions. One minute they were fighting, and the next she was kissing him. He definitely preferred the latter, and returned her kiss.
Callie finished her breakfast, walked back into the other room, and saw Felina and Jake in another lip lock. She watched the two of them kiss for a while, until Felina slipped her paw into Jake's shirt. Callie then said loudly, "As much as you two might want to have make up sex, we have a job to do. The sooner we get this done and Chance back with us, the sooner you two can go back and do whatever you want."
Felina pulled back from the kiss, turned to Callie, and said, "You are such a kill joy, you know that?"
Callie just chuckled at Felina and turned towards the garage in order to get to the hangar to change into her SWAT persona.
Felina removed her paw from Jake's shirt and said to him, "We are going to continue this discussion tonight, very loudly, if you get what I am saying." She then sauntered off to the kitchen go get some food.
Jake knew exactly what Felina was talking about, and he was going to love continuing their discussion. He followed her into the kitchen.
It was now 9:30 in the morning. T-Bone and Katerina embraced one last time before they both climbed into the TurboKat. T-Bone fastened his seatbelt and closed the canopy before starting the engines. He said to Katerina, "Are you ready?"
Katerina sighed as she finished fastening herself into the gunner's seat. "As ready as I am ever going to be. Promise me one thing, T-Bone. That you will be the cat to take me back to prison, and not some Enforcer newbie, or worse, a security guard."
"I will do that for you, Katerina, and I will go one further. I'll talk to the DA and tell him everything that has happened since that first group meeting in the restaurant, so you can get out of prison sooner," T-Bone said while checking the flight controls.
Once T-Bone was satisfied that everything was operational, he pushed the throttles fully open and took off into the sky.
End of Chapter.
Author's Note:
This is the last chapter before things get really dark for all. Don't worry, things are always darkest before they get brighter.
