Chapter 14: The Trial of the Mask
The narrow tunnel wound deep into the earth, its walls glittering faintly as though lined with flecks of gold and emerald. The group pressed forward, Milo leading the way with his nose to the ground, Tina gripping a flashlight, and Stanley muttering about his questionable life choices. Ace, in contrast, had turned the cramped passage into his personal runway.
"And here we see the daring adventurer," Ace narrated in a sultry announcer voice, sashaying forward, "draped in the latest jungle chic. Behold the mud-streaked boots! The sweat-drenched hair! The… oh! Is that a guano accessory?" He flicked imaginary dust from his shoulder. "Fabulous."
"Ace, could you please take this seriously?" Tina groaned, her patience thinning.
Ace spun to face her, his zoot suit magically transforming into a judge's robe and powdered wig. "Overruled! This court finds your lack of humor... criminal." He rapped an invisible gavel against the wall, which promptly turned into a giant springboard and launched him forward with a comedic boing!
Tina shook her head. "Stanley, how did you ever survive this guy?"
"Honestly?" Stanley replied, stepping over a loose rock. "I try not to think about it."
As they emerged into a vast underground chamber, the air grew thick with an almost electric energy. A circular stone platform dominated the center of the room, surrounded by intricate carvings that seemed to pulse with life. At its heart lay a glowing green orb—a focal point of raw power.
Ace bounded toward the platform, his arms outstretched. "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the main event! Will our hero claim the prize? Or will he face… doom?" He mock-gasped. "Spoiler alert: it's doom with a capital Duh."
"Wait," Stanley said, grabbing Ace's arm before he could step onto the platform. "We don't know what this thing does. For all we know, it could be another trap."
"Trap?" Ace repeated, his eyes bulging cartoonishly. "Stanley, my timid tulip, life is a trap. The secret is to shimmy, shake, and moonwalk your way through it!" He demonstrated with an exaggerated dance, complete with a hat that appeared out of nowhere.
Tina stepped forward, her gaze fixed on the glowing orb. "This must be tied to the mask's power. If we're going to figure out how to stop all of this, we need to understand what it's doing here."
Ace perked up. "Understanding, you say? Lucky for you, I minored in ancient jungle orbology." He produced a magnifying glass and leaned over the platform, examining the carvings. "Hmm… yes, yes. Fascinating. Ah-ha! Just as I suspected."
"What?" Stanley asked warily.
Ace turned, holding up a finger. "This orb is…" He paused for dramatic effect. "Super shiny."
Stanley groaned. "We're doomed."
Before Tina could retort, Milo let out a sharp bark, drawing their attention to the shadows beyond the chamber. A low rumble echoed through the room, and the carvings on the walls began to glow brighter. The orb pulsed, and the platform shifted, rising slowly as if summoned by an unseen force.
"Uh-oh," Ace said, his face stretching into an exaggerated grimace. "I think we woke up the landlord."
A booming voice filled the chamber, resonating like thunder. "WHO DARES DISTURB THE SACRED RELIC?"
Ace's face lit up, and he stepped forward boldly. "It is I, the one and only Ace Ventura: Masked Crusader, Animal Whisperer, and part-time salsa instructor. And these are my… let's call them sidekicks."
"Ace!" Tina hissed, pulling him back. "You can't just talk to… whatever that is!"
The voice boomed again, shaking the room. "TO POSSESS THE MASK'S POWER, YOU MUST PROVE YOUR WORTH. FACE THE TRIAL OF THE MASK!"
The platform lit up, and the orb emitted a blinding flash. When the light subsided, Ace, Tina, and Stanley found themselves standing on what looked like a giant game board. The tiles beneath their feet shifted, revealing a series of challenges: swinging pendulums, spiked pits, and walls that closed in menacingly.
Stanley gulped. "This is not what I signed up for."
"Relax, Stanley," Ace said, cracking his knuckles. "This is just a classic case of Temple of Doom meets Candyland. And lucky for you, I'm a professional."
As the first challenge activated, Ace leapt onto a moving tile with impossible agility, striking a gymnast's pose. "Ta-da! Ace Ventura: Master of Mayhem!" He cartwheeled over a spiked pit, his limbs stretching elastically to dodge swinging blades.
"Come on, folks! Keep up!" he called, his voice echoing with cartoonish reverb.
Tina and Stanley exchanged a look. "We're going to die," Stanley muttered.
"Not if we follow his lead," Tina said, surprising herself with the words.
Together, they navigated the chaotic game board, Tina using her quick thinking and Stanley stumbling through by sheer luck. Meanwhile, Ace continued his performance, defying physics and common sense at every turn. At one point, he turned into a bowling ball to knock down a set of oversized pins that blocked their path.
"STRIKE!" he bellowed, striking a triumphant pose. "I told you I was Nolan Ryan!"
As the final challenge loomed—a massive pendulum swinging over a narrow bridge—Ace stepped forward, holding up his hand. "Fear not, my faithful companions. I shall conquer this obstacle with the grace of a gazelle and the courage of a lion! And if I'm not back in five minutes… just wait longer."
He leapt onto the bridge, dodging the pendulum with a series of acrobatic flips. When he reached the other side, he turned and cupped his hands around his mouth. "Piece of cake! Now it's your turn. Don't mess it up!"
Tina and Stanley exchanged another look. "I hate him so much," Stanley muttered, before stepping onto the bridge.
As they crossed, the voice boomed again. "THE TRIAL IS COMPLETE. YOU HAVE PROVEN YOUR WORTH… FOR NOW."
The platform lowered, and the orb dimmed. Ace, Tina, and Stanley stood in silence for a moment before Ace broke into a wide grin, and then began thrusting his hips. "Oh, yeah, baby! Can you feel that? Daddy can do this all night long! I made this game my b-"
"Ace! Enough!" Tina bellowed.
"Party-Pooper!" Ace remarked. "Well, that was fun! Who's ready for round two?"
Tina groaned. "Let's just find a way out of here."
Ace twirled his cane and struck a jaunty pose. "Lead the way, my jungle queen. The adventure continues!"
To be, well, you know...
