All of the first years, including Sirius, gazed in awe as we walked through the castle. The thousands of portraits we passed were filled with people, watching as with interest. Some of them waved at students.

Sirius glanced over at James, Remus, and Peter. James seemed to be trying to look cool, but failing miserably. He stared up at the castle in wonder, then caught himself and went back to following the group, head held high.

Sirius laughed slightly and James glared at him. "There's always time to act cool later." Sirius said to him. "Not if youre trying to make a good first impression on everyone." He said back, the corner of his lips folding into a grin.

Sirius then glanced over at Remus and Peter. Peter was staring at the portraits in wonder, stopping every so often and bumping into the other very annoyed students. Remus on the other hand was talking about the history of the castle.

"It's said that the portraits magically appear on the walls. I read it in Hogwarts, A History." Remus said to Peter, who was obviously not paying attention. 'So Remus is obviously the bookworm, which makes him the rule follower.' Sirius thought to himself. 'And Peter... seems kinda clueless.'

At the moment Sirius thought that, Peter tripped over his feet and went tumbling into the girl walking in front of him, sending them both crashing to the ground. The girl glared at him as her friend helped her up. "Sorry." Peter whispered.

James pulled Peter up by the arm and patted him on the back. "Come on mate, you're already making a bad impression on the ladies." He said before turning to the girls. "I'm sorry about my friend. He's a bit clumsy. Hope you can forgive him."

The girls stared at him for a second, before nervously giggling. Sirius rolled his eyes. James Potter, the ladies magnet. "It's ok! Don't worry about it." The girl who fell said. "Yeah, totally." The other replied.

The group stopped in front of a set of big doors. Sirius pulled Peter back before he could run into the same girl from before. "Honestly, mate, try to be a bit careful." He said to the shorter boy.

"Ahem." The boys turned to see a tall witch standing in front of them. "Now that I have everyone's attention," She said, looking directly at the pair. Peter's face flushed red, but Sirius stared directly at her, raising his chin slightly.

"My name is Professor Minerva McGonagall. I am head of Gryffindor house and your Transfiguration teacher for the next seven years." The lady said. "These doors lead to the Great Hall, where your fellow students are waiting for the Sorting Ceremony to begin. Follow me."

The doors swung open, revealing a large hall with four long tables and one smaller table in the front. Sitting on the four tables were too many students to count, all in their own house colors. Sirius glanced over at the Slytherin table, where he immediately spotted Narcissa and the other pure blood kids. They were all watching him, so Sirius turned away. He continued to look forward, at the smaller table where the professors sat.

Professor McGonagall led the first years to the front of the room, right next to a stool with a worn looking hat on it. "What is that?" Peter asked. "You'll see." Sirius replied. The hat moved slightly, so it was sitting tall. A small gap appeared.

"You may not think I'm pretty,

You may think that I'm worn out

But I'm the Sorting Hat you see,

And I'm more than the rest

For I can see inside your head

And tell you which is best.

You may belong in Gryffindor

If your heart is brave and true.

They stand tall and bright in face of danger

Just something they must do.

You may belong in Hufflepuff

The loyalist of them all.

They're patient and the best of friends

And stand among the hall.

You may belong in Ravenclaw

If your mind is quick and smart.

They are the brightest of them all

They tell each other apart.

You may belong in Slytherin

The cunning and resourceful.

Those sly snakes may be interesting

But are just like the rest.

So try me on, don't be shy

For I'm the thinking cap.

I'll place you where you should belong

And you'll all do all the rest!"

The students around them burst into applause as the hat finished speaking. The first years glanced around at each other, but Sirius was too focused on what the Sorting Hat had said.

"Those sly smakes may be interesting, but in the end are just like the rest." Sirius shuddered. No way were any of his cousins or families friends anything like the rest of the students.

Sirius felt a shoulder nudge him. James. "Sorting's starting, mate." He whispered. Sirius nodded and looked up at the hat. "Marlene McKinnon!" McGonagall called. A girl with dark hair and pale skin walked onto the platform, head held high, but Sirius could see her hands shaking.

Marlene sat down on the stool and McGonagall placed the hat on her head. The first years watched closely as her eyes widened. "Gryffindor!" The hat yelled after a minute. Marlene grinned as she hopped off the stool and ran to the Gryffindor table, who was cheering for her.

"Where do you think you'll be?" James whispered as the next girl, Patricia Rakepick, sat on the stool. "Probably Slytherin, like the rest of them." "Ah, tough luck mate. See you on the other side." Patricia got sorted into Hufflepuff, then James was called.

James walked up confidently, his head held high. Sirius could practically hear the eyerolls from Slytherin table. James sat down and almost as soon as the hat was placed on his head, it called out, "Gryffindor!"

Sirius watched glumly as James walked to the Gryffindor table. 'There goes my first friend.' He thought to himself. Before he knew it, Remus had also been sorted into Gryffindor and now it was his turn.

Sirius walked over to the hat slowly. He sat down, glancing at James and Remus. James gave him a thumbs up as the hat was placed on his head.

"Well, another Black." The sorting hat said in his mind. "What should we do with you? Hmm. Certainly not Ravenclaw, or Hufflepuff. You would be good in Slytherin maybe. But, what's that? Oh my. Well, I know where you should go."

"Gryffindor!" The sorting hat yelled out. Cheers burst from the Gryffindor table. Sirius grinned. Two identical Gryffindors stood up and pointed at the Slytherin table, mocking them. Sirius looked over to see shocked expressions on all of their faces.

Sirius ran and sat down next to James and Remus. The two boys who had been mocking the Slytherins sat down across from them. "Nice mate. You show the Slytherins." One of them said. "I'm Gideon Prewett. That's Fabian." He said.

Sirius smiled at the two. "Sirius Black." "Oh, we know mate." Fabian said. "You're gonna be legendary. First Black not in Slytherin."

Sirius grinned as he heard these words. He was gonna have a lot of fun in Gryffindor.
