Brainiac 5, Imra, Ayala, and Reep casually flew over the planet, Colu, and found several degenerative behaviors. The Coluans had abandoned technology and were cooking meat over street fires, fighting with one another, and generally trashing the place. "Total societal degeneracy. This is a far greater threat than simply induced amnesia. Brain-stored memories can be recovered. They're only unrecoverable if overwritten by bad data," Brainiac 5 explained calmly.
"So, what's the plan?" Imra asked impatiently.
"We must find Coluan's foremost researcher Her lab is here, but the rubble is blocking the entrance," Brainiac 5 pointed out. "Move it," he ordered Ayala.
"Fine, damn, you're welcome," Ayla said peeved as she zapped the debris causing it to float away.
"You shouldn't be so dismissive of her power," Reep said in Ayala's defense.
"I am not dismissive of her power, I am dismissive of her," Brainiac 5 replied.
"Oh, well, that makes it better," Reep said sarcastically.
"Still here," Ayala said annoyed as she moved the debris away.
"Light Lass and her opposite number, Star Boy, are able to use the power of gravity, one of the fundamental forces in the universe for mere party tricks. The both of them squander their potential with immature commentary of a sexual nature," Brainiac 5 said.
"That's the worst compliment I have ever heard," Ayala said pissed off.
"Shall we kill him?" Reep wondered.
"What would be the point, he's got billions of drones at his disposal," Imra rolled her eyes.
The four eventually came to a lab that was on fire with exploding equipment everywhere. "Not promising," Brainiac 5 said dryly.
"What if we also get this virus? How would we even tell?" Imra asked.
"It's of no concern. Shut the lab down," Brainiac 5 ordered.
As the four spread out, Brainiac 5 encountered a female Coluan, the researcher in question. She was randomly pushing buttons on a console. "Get her away from the controls," Brainiac 5 ordered Imra.
With a wave of her hand, Imra forced the researcher away from the controls against the wall. "What is she singing?" Imra wondered.
"It's a Coluan nursery rhyme," Brainiac 5 replied. "I'll shut everything down from here," he said and then did just that on the console panel.
"You didn't really answer my question, asshole. What if the virus takes hold of you?" Imra asked.
"As if?" Brainiac 5 scoffed.
"How can you be so certain?" Imra asked skeptically.
"The distance between you to an average Coluan is the distance between them to me," Brainiac 5 said arrogantly. "I have within me the combined knowledge of this world. I can simulate all of their petty lives within a fraction of a second. I was of them, but I am not them now."
"Tell that to them," Imra said as a mob of Coluans entered the lab and tried to swarm them.
VR Galactic Federation Senate
"The rules of who may or may not be given the title of Her Imperial Highness are quite simple: The biological children of the sovereign, the biological children of the biological children of the sovereign, the biological children of the crown prince or princess, and the spouses of an already existing H-I-H," the Titan Senator said.
"Well…no shit," Kara said obviously. "We're here today to make an exception to the rules."
"Should Miss Alexandra Danvers marry Prince Mon…," the Winathian Senator suggested.
"Polygamy is not legally recognized by Earth," the Earth Senator shot down.
"Then, perhaps, Miss Alexandra Danvers may be an imperial princess recognized by all worlds of the Galactic Federation except Earth," the Winathian Senator said smirkingly.
"Prince Mon-El is recognized as an imperial prince via his marriage to the sovereign. We do not recognize a joint monarchy," the Titan Senator declared. "Therefore, none of his additional wives are to receive the title."
"I object, Prince Mon-El is no doubt a joint monarch with the sovereign, and anyone he marries should receive the title," the Jin-Saiyan Senator said.
The Senate, for the most part, booed the Jin Saiyan delegation. "I find this discussion very interesting…," Kara began.
"Just keep the debate going while I handle the situation in Colu," Brainiac 5 whispered to her.
"…and I think we should keep it going," Kara said with a cringed expression.
Colu
Reep morphed into a large, orange-colored sea monster with web claws. He began smacking zombie-looking Coluans around to keep them back. Imra pointed her hand at another group of Coluans and telekinetically kept them back with continuous pulses.
"You have a way out of here?" Imra asked.
"Ayala, take down the roof," Brainiac 5 ordered.
Ayala fired on the roof causing it to collapse. She then floated the debris over her head as the four of them escaped. The four regrouped on a roof safe from the zombie Coluans. "The Coluan race losing their minds and sense of identity will be a slight inconvenience for my plans for the galaxy," Brainiac 5 informed them.
"We'll get to the bottom of this," Ayala said enthusiastically. "Hey, what's up with your antennae? Aren't they bio-scanners?"
"They are," Reep confirmed as his antennae instinctively pointed away from the group.
"I would dig in if I were you," Ayala said as her eyes glowed white and everything started to float around them.
Reep immediately became an orange-colored monster creature that dug his tentacles into the ground while using additional tentacles to wrap around Brainiac 5 and Imra. "Let's see it stay cloaked and hold on through this," Ayla said as debris from the nearby buildings went up into the air.
"I can sense you. There's no point in hiding," Imra said telepathically to the unknown enemy.
"Something is coming into view. Reep, move me to the left," Brainiac 5 said as his cybernetic eyes detected an anomaly nearby. "Closer, closer."
Brainiac 5 suddenly grabbed the cloaked man. "Who are you?" he demanded of him.
"Honestly? A very embarrassed enemy who should have studied Durlans before he got so close. It never occurred to me to cloak myself from passive detection. Now, release me, and I'll call this a draw. I have people waiting for me," the man said.
"You're Lemnos," Brainiac 5 identified the man. Lemnos appeared humanoid wearing a black suit and white cape.
"Should I restore gravity?" Ayala asked.
"No, don't stop," Brainiac 5 ordered her.
"So, you've deduced that I was the one sowing forgetfulness on this world. You Vindicators truly are amazing," Lemnos smiled.
"I know we are," Brainiac 5 said as he held a tight grip on him. "I'm about to launch you into the stratosphere unless you tell me something interesting."
"I'm not the foe you believe me to be. Your biggest adversary is much closer to home," Lemnos said cryptically.
Brainiac 5 glanced at Imra who gave him a nod. Brainiac 5 then released Lemnos into the stratosphere where he would presumably suffocate and freeze. "Lemnos to Terror Firma, lock onto my voice!" he shouted as he was flung higher and higher into the air.
Lemnos then teleported away. Ayala restored gravity and lowered them all back to the roof. "Should we follow?" Reep asked.
"No, we lack the means to take him now and we have all the information we need. Instead, we will restore order," Brainiac 5 ordered them.
VR Galactic Federation Senate
"I have a new report on the Coluan situation. It appears…," Brainiac 5 began.
"All I care about is them showing up to vote," Kara said impatiently.
"I have made the arrangements," Brainiac 5 said as the Coluan delegation suddenly appeared. They looked hopelessly confused and drooling on themselves.
"I hereby end debate and call for a vote," Kara declared.
The vote tally came in with mostly no votes. Despite the Earth's Senator's initial opposition, he voted yes as he was in Kara's pocket. It would all come down to Colu to give Kara the necessary one-third plus one vote. Finally, the Coluan delegation figured out how to vote yes and pushed the button.
"Barney, what the fuck is wrong with them?" Kara asked concernedly.
"I'll brief you later," Brainiac 5 replied.
With a 34%-66% vote, Kara successfully updated the Line of Succession Act to make Alex Danvers an Imperial Princess in the Galactic Federation with the title of Her Imperial Highness. Kara sat down with a sigh of relief. The Senate Chamber gave her a standing ovation, even those who opposed her, for winning the vote.
Earth-Metropolis
Shortly thereafter, Kara got a call from Alex. "Hello, you," Kara greeted.
"So, I was wondering if you had a free evening soon so we could all have dinner together. Before I go to Africa," Alex said awkwardly.
"Why the fuck are you going to Africa?" Kara questioned.
"So, Thursday?" Alex asked.
"I have to check, oh wait, I'm in charge of everything," Kara agreed. "So, who are all coming?"
"Well, you, me, Mon, and Kelly," Alex said obviously.
"Oh, Kelly, yeah," Kara winced.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Alex asked offended.
"Nothing, how nice of her to come," Kara backtracked.
"There's something we'd like to discuss with you," Alex said seriously.
"Can you give me a clue?" Kara asked.
"No," Alex shot her down. "So, Thursday evening, then?"
"Fine," Kara allowed.
Kara dressed up for dinner in white as she waited for Mon to eventually arrive. "Where were you, today?" she asked scornfully.
"Nowhere," he answered, blowing her off.
"Well, clearly somewhere," Kara figured.
"Nowhere that would interest you. It's a lunch club with just men," Mon said.
"Talking about women," Kara assumed.
"Yes, we discussed which women are the most beautiful in Croatia, Albania, Montenegro, Hungary, and Italy over coffee and brandy," Mon said bluntly.
"I expected more from you," Kara scolded.
"So, who are we entertaining tonight?" Mon asked.
"No one. Just you, me, Alex, and Kelly," Kara listed off.
"Then, why the fuck did we have to dress up?" Mon complained.
"She says it's a special occasion," Kara said vaguely.
"With Kelly? Isn't that a contradiction in terms?" Mon wondered.
"I know as much as you do," Kara replied.
Midvale
Kara, Mon, Alex, and Kelly sat down for dinner with servants attending to them at Alex's family home in Midvale which had been renovated. "Leave us, thank you," Alex said to all the servants once dinner and the wine bottle had been served.
Mon immediately sampled the soup not giving a fuck about proper etiquette. Alex gave him a dismayed look but stayed focused. "I asked you here tonight because there's something important I wished to discuss with you," Alex began. "I think you already know that over the last few years, Kelly has been such a big part of my life. At first, it was a professional friendship, but she's become my sole companion, and I her. So, naturally, we started thinking about what kind of future we might have together."
As Alex was speaking, Mon obnoxiously ate a bread roll and poured himself another glass of wine. Kara eyed Mon to knock it off but kept silent. "And we reached a decision just before we left for this time…that one day…, well, you know."
"I really don't," Kara said wide-eyed.
"Suspense is killing me," Mon said as he began cutting his steak.
"Marry," Alex said finally.
"But you're already married," Kara said confused.
"In this time," Alex clarified. "Of course, we're aware of the complications and the issues at stake. This can't really be a terrible shock to you."
"Not at all," Kara said as she internally screamed. "It's wonderful."
"Is there anything you'd like to ask us?" Kelly asked.
"How do you hope to consummate this marriage? It's required in this time," Mon asked immaturely.
"We've had an open and frank conversation on the matter," Kelly assured him.
"Oh, good," Mon said satisfied.
"So, do we have your permission?" Alex asked. "As sovereign?"
"Well, of course, I'll have to take advice on how and where and all official matters. But if it's what you desire, to make a public spectacle of yourselves…," Kara said awkwardly.
"More than anything in the world," Alex confirmed.
Kara and Mon went back to Metropolis in their car. "You knew?" Mon figured.
"Not to the extent of it," Kara admitted.
"But you didn't think to mention it?" Mon asked offended.
"Like you give a shit," Kara said dismissively.
"I don't like it. Any of it. For one thing, it will create the most enormous scandal. She's also too old for her," Mon said.
"She's only six years older," Kara discounted.
"Not to mention, she's dull," Mon insulted. "Desperately, dull. I'm confident I've met more interesting plants. It's also a terrible thing to do to you as a sister and as queen."
"I know, right? What is she thinking?" Kara wondered. "Well, there's no realistic way for Alex to become queen. I had to compromise on that matter with the Galactic Federation Senate. Still, I can see a possible attraction for the people."
"They're gay," Mon reminded her.
"Kelly's a smart intelligent war hero," Kara exaggerated.
"A gay war hero," Mon reminded her.
"And blameless in that regard. No one would willingly choose to be…like that," Kara said and then stuck out her tongue in disgust.
"There's no such thing as being blameless when it comes to gay marriage," Mon said.
"Stop it," Kara scolded. "I thought you liked her."
"I did until she turned down my gracious proposal to my third wife," Mon said bitterly.
"I think she's a good influence on Alex," Kara considered.
Metropolis
The next day, Kara and Brainiac 5 had a sit down over the Alex question. "I hope the Supreme Leader understands the context of this discreet conversation. Alex Danvers is perfectly entitled, in her private life, to make the personal choices she wishes, as she wishes. However, as with a great many feminists, the conventional approach to life does not appear to fit with her. It seems what makes her political work notable, her willingness, her appetite, to break barriers, as she pushes her agenda to its boundaries, as with her work, so it is in life."
"I see," Kara nodded thoughtfully.
"The narrow path, the straight path, is not to her taste," Brainiac 5 continued. Kara merely gave him a blank look. "She is conducting no more, no less than one intimate relationship."
"Holy shit," Kara said stunned.
"And I must add, it's not a natural one," Brainiac 5 concluded.
"It's Kelly Olsen, isn't it?" Kara realized wide-eyed.
"Quite right," Brainiac 5 confirmed.
"A story is about to break in the press identifying Kelly Olsen not just as the companion of Princess Alex but as her wife," Brainiac 5 revealed. "We understand that the paper is to feature a profile of Kelly Olsen, details on her personal and professional life in the 21st century along with her subsequent marriage to Alex along with an editorial about other notable lesbians that have been associated with members of royal families throughout human history," Brainiac 5 revealed.
"I'm thinking we should deny it all," Kara said dumbfounded.
"It's a little late for that," Brainiac 5 replied. "These mares have already bolted."
"Fuck me," Kara realized.
The next morning, Alex was woken up by a call from Kara. "Hello," she asked pleasantly.
"Good time?" Kara asked.
"Good time, always," Alex giggled as Kelly caressed her beside her in bed.
Kara paused as her super-hearing informed her of every little thing going on in that room. "So, I've been thinking about the best way to help your situation. And you know the Christian Church doesn't permit gay marriages."
"So?" Alex wondered.
"How about you get married, symbolically, in Maine," Kara suggested.
"Why? Because it would be low-profile?" Alex asked suspiciously.
"Yeah, so, if you could agree to that, it would make my life a lot easier," Kara said.
"I realize this isn't making your life easier," Alex said unconcernedly.
"But I'm willing to do this for you, to give you what you want," Kara said with false sincerity.
Later that day, Kara, Mon, and Brainiac 5 discussed the issue. "I'm just trying to protect you as queen," Mon said.
"Yeah, bullshit," Kara knew otherwise. "I've given Alex my word and I'm determined to support her. They can marry in Maine, in a secular symbolic ceremony."
"I fear the matter is more intricate than that," Brainiac 5 interjected.
"Let's be clear, If Alex were to marry Kelly, it would be a scandal. Don't mistake your current popularity for long-term security," Mon warned.
"You need to protect your relationship between the government and the church," Brainiac 5 advised. "Preferably, we separate them in different countries. It's the only way to contain the story."
The next day, human-controlled news firms leaked out that the Supreme Leader's sister, Alex Danvers, was present in the 31st century, was made an Imperial Princess at the Galactic Federation Senate vote but was also in a lesbian relationship with Kelly Olsen.
Alex had been set up to be a heroic figure in Kara's propaganda of her. There was nothing to indicate she was gay in the histories. Kara took an immediate approval rating hit. Mobs attempted to tear down statues of Alex at various locations around the world.
"Holy shit," Kara realized the scope of the scandal.
Kara went down to Midvale to try to deal with the issue. "You're already married, you don't need a wedding ceremony in this time," Kara told her. "Why do you even need this?"
"To show this society you've made the right path of openness, inclusiveness, tolerance, and acceptance," Alex said.
"That isn't going to happen," Kara said bluntly. "The Church is against you, all of Earth society is against you. Your kind no longer exists. What you have is treatable in the womb, even after the child is born. You are the only gay couple on the planet."
"I don't believe that. They're just afraid to come out," Alex doubted.
"Your argument rested on the fact that you didn't have a choice in the matter. Now, you do," Kara told her.
"People should be free to love whomever they want. This isn't about me being sexually attracted to men or women. This is about me being attracted to Kelly, the person," Alex said.
"I get that. I really do but there was a time when you didn't know Kelly. And when you first met her, you felt the butterflies, the excitement, the thrill. That was your sexuality telling you to be interested in her. And if not for your sexuality, you wouldn't have gotten together," Kara pointed out.
"You gave Barney your memorized version of the Bible, you appointed him the pope, and you brought back your version of Christianity while ignoring all other faiths and creeds. You created this monopoly and told every other religion to get fucked," Alex accused.
"If not for me, there would be no religion," Kara said defensively.
"And maybe this world would be better off for it," Alex said.
"You speak out of ignorance. You don't know what I had to do to lead this world over seven years. Before my arrival, it was hell. People were starving in poverty while the environment went to shit. I fixed this world, and I did it in your memory," Kara told her.
"Why didn't you just omit the verses about homosexuality?" Alex asked.
"I never thought I would be able to see you again," Kara said sincerely.
"So, to hell with every other gay person that might have lived on this planet?" Alex asked. "You don't care about anyone in the LGBT, you never did. You don't give a damn about Kelly either. You tried to erase my sexuality, remember? That little mind-control trick you played on me for a good ten years?"
"Don't act so offended, Alex. You're the one trying to play a game on me with this wedding stunt. You want to embarrass me. After years of me embarrassing you at the DEO, you want to get back at me. But what you're doing to me, slightly inconveniences my work and that fucks over this planet, this galaxy," Kara told her.
"You have a plan? You always do," Alex rolled her eyes.
"I do but it involves taking Kelly with me," Kara replied.
Ireland
Kara, Mon, and Kelly took a flight to Ireland. Inside the plane, Kara and Brainiac 5 discussed the schedule. "I do hope it wasn't a mistake to bring Miss Olsen," Brainiac 5 said dryly.
"You never cared for her," Kara assumed.
"I cared for her as long as she did her job and knew her place," Brainiac 5 corrected.
"James held her in high regard, and she's been a good friend to us all," Kara pointed out.
"Too good, I would argue. Her professional interest in Alex quickly became personal," Brainiac 5 said.
"She's innocent in that regard. It's how their brains work," Kara downplayed. "And she's a wonderful social worker to all those kids."
"I'm just trying to manage a difficult situation," Brainiac 5 said delicately.
"As am I. If anything were to happen to Kelly, it would break my sister's heart," Kara said concernedly.
"Hearts mend. Should they separate, Alex would no longer have an excuse to avoid the treatment," Brainiac 5 said.
Kara simply stared at him. "Will there be anything else?" Brainiac 5 asked her.
"No," Kara said flatly.
Upon landing in Ireland, Kara was greeted by a large crowd of supporters. Reporters were everywhere to get a glimpse of Kara, Mon, and Kelly. A young girl handed Kara a bouquet of flowers. Kara then brought Kelly to the reporters. Kara was wearing her white uniform while Kelly was in a black uniform with a cadet rank.
"I want to introduce Kelly Olsen, my personal psychiatrist and a good friend of mine from the 21st century, a good friend of the family," Kara said emphasizing 'friend' in front of the reporters.
"Can you clarify rumors of a romance between Princess Alex and Miss Olsen?" one reporter asked boldly.
"As I said, Cadet Olsen is a good friend of the family, the entire family," Kara replied.
Afterward, Kara hosted a ball, but rumors persisted. "I brought her along to show my gratitude for her years of service to me and to support my sister. I had hoped that the attention between Alex and Kelly would fade away," Kara said defensively.
"Your naivety amuses me," Brainiac 5 replied. "The solution is obvious."
"Which is?" Kara asked.
"Relocate them with immediate effect," Brainiac 5 suggested.
"I gave Alex my word I wouldn't exile them," Kara said.
"Well, sometimes best intentions need to be reconsidered," Brainiac 5 said coldly. "You can always blame it on me."
"No, let's see if it calms down," Kara said and was suddenly ambushed by military drummers. "Holy shit," she said startled.
The next day, Kara addressed high-ranking officials in a chapel. "May God give you wisdom, loyalty, and faithfulness. And may the future bring peace, contentment, and true happiness to the people of Ireland."
As Kara, Mon, and Kelly boarded the plane back to Metropolis, the reporters called out to Kelly to get a reaction from her. She merely smiled and gave them a wave.
On the plane, Kelly approached Kara. "Do you have a moment?"
"Sure," Kara allowed.
"I just want to apologize for all the press attention and thank you for inviting me along in the first place. I do appreciate the gesture," Kelly said appreciatively.
"You and Alex will always be my priority, but I cannot ignore the world. In your time, I didn't care if the world exploded so long as you and Alex were off it. Things are a little different now," Kara said.
"Of course," Kelly said. "As you know, Alex and I have so many shared interests. We had hoped to walk, swim, ride, but not to be with all this press."
"I'll find a way to sort this out," Kara promised.
Metropolis
Upon arriving in Metropolis, Kara was greeted by large crowds. Kara kept Kelly close to her for her own safety and to keep the ruse going that Kelly was merely a member of Kara's staff. Still, speculation and rumors continued to float about through the media.
In the palace, Brainiac 5 summoned Kelly to a conference room. "Following consultation with the government, the decision has been made for you to go to Officer Cadet School for three months with immediate effect."
"But that wasn't what was agreed. I was promised a direct commission," Kelly objected.
"I'm afraid that won't be possible. Your skills and education are obsolete in the field of psychiatry. Furthermore, your knowledge and experience as a commissioned officer in the system is lacking," Brainiac 5 replied.
"Barney, I understand you're just doing your job but the romance between me and Alex has caught the public eye. There is momentum for us, a sense of joy and celebration, which you would be wise to acknowledge. The people can clearly see the sincerity and love between Alex and me. I advise you not to rebuke us, it could backfire," Kelly said boldly.
"And now, if I may give you some advice, in turn, Kelly. When referring to the imperial household, you should call them by Her Imperial Highness," Brainiac 5 reminded her.
"When referring to the woman I love, and who loves me, and who is my wife, I'll call her what I damn like. Her name is Alex," Kelly told him off.
"Your school awaits. Tick-tock," Brainiac 5 ordered.
Africa
Kelly arrived in Africa in the middle of nowhere and checked in with housing. Upon entering her assigned apartment, she found Alex already there. "What the?" Kelly wondered.
"Looks like we're roommates," Alex smiled and gave Kelly a kiss.
