For the next week things took on a normal pattern. Ugin and I would study magic, or work on other lessons such as history. I soaked up his wisdom. I loved learning, and it was obvious that Ugin enjoyed teaching as well. Our nights were spent looking at the stars or just spending time together cuddling. I honestly was more happy than I had ever been, and I think that Ugin felt the same way as well.
One day after breakfast, a man that had wings of a dragon approached us. I saw him coming, and hid against Ugin. I had not seen another humanlike being in so long, and due to past experience I really did not want to be near him.
Ugin saw him, and gently patted me. "This is Sarkhan Vol. He is the man who saved me from my twin," he explained.
"Oh I see," but I did not move away from Ugin's side.
Sarkan came over to Ugin, and then noticed me.
"Who is she?" He asked.
Ugin introduced me, and told him that I was his dearest friend. Sarkan nodded, and bowed to me. "Greetings Serenity, pleased to meet you."
"You as well," I said shyly. After the pleasantries were enchanted Ugin asked: "Why have you come to me?''
Sarkan cleared his throat. "It seems that there is a conflict going on between Dromoka and Ojetui. They have requested that you meet with him in Dromoka's territory, and mediate."
"I see," Ugin nodded. He looked at me, and asked: "are you ready to take a bit of a trip with me?"
I nodded, "sure."
"Alright Sarkan lead the way."
With that we headed to a new part of Tarkir, the desert, to meet more dragons, and settle a dispute.
The flight there was uneventful. Ugin talked to me as we flew. He told me a bit about Dromoka as well as Ojutai. He also told me to stay very close to him. I replied that was easy for me to do
When we got to the desert we landed, and Sarkan led us to Dromoka's home. It was a simple oasis where dragons, and humans worked well together. I was glad to see that there was a good working relationship between dragons as well as humans. I also noticed that some people started openly at me. When I asked Ugin why he whispered back that they had never seen someone like me before. "There is not one on this plane with silver hair," he said. I nodded, and got just a bit closer to him.
We were led into a meeting hall, where we were greeted by the two dragons. Dromoka was a large goldish dragon, and Ojutai was a white feathered dragon with red markings. Ugin lay down on all fours, and I leaned on his chest where I could still hear his heart.
Once everyone was settled the meeting began.
The two Dragonlords explained that the conflict that they had was that Ojetui who lived in the mountains covered in ice ruled said that they were having trouble getting food for his people, and had now entered Dromoka's territory to hunt for food, and Dromoka's people were killing his people.
Dromoka was upset that people were running out of water, but they were not allowed onto Ojutai lands to gather ice. It seemed to be a huge problem, but as I listened, it seemed to me that the solution was to just allow things to happen without fighting, but they could not see it.
Ugin spoke to me in my mind. "What do you think he asked?"
"I think that this is a pointless argument, and that the solution is rather simple, but they cannot see it because they are too busy fighting about it."
Ugin replied: "Indeed, and what is your solution?"
"Well, to allow Ojetui's people onto Dromoka lands to hunt for food freely as long as they promise to deliver ice and water to the desert. There does not have to be any killing or even fighting; it is that simple."
"I agree," Ugin said gently. "That is what I am going to suggest to them whenever they get done arguing."
I nodded, and turned to give him a hug. We listened to them argue for a bit longer then Ugin cleared his throat.
"I think that the solution is obvious, but you are too busy to see it," Ugin said. He then went to advise them of what Ugin, and I had discussed. When he was done speaking. They stared, and Dromoka stated: "why were we not able to see the result of this before?"
"I know not," Ojetui stated, "but it seems a very logical thing to do."
"Yes indeed we should work together, rather than this pointless battle."
With that, the two dragons created a treaty to make this work. Ugin signed it, and I as well, while Sarkan played the part of witnesses.
Once everything was complete Dromoka spoke: "Thank you Ugin for solving our problem."
"No, don't thank me. Thank Serenity here," he said looking at me. "She's the one that came up with the answer."
"I see," Dromoka said. With that, she asked a man to come forward. He held a small box in his hand when he opened it, he pulled out a jewel-like item, and passed it to his dragon master. Dromoka nodded in approval. "This is for you little Serenity. This dragon scale of mine is a token of appreciation for helping us solve our conflict. This dragon scale is imbued with radiant power that will aid you if you are ever in danger. Please take it as a gift from clan Dromoka as well as me personally," Dromoka said as she presented me with the dragon scale.
I was not sure what to say, but Ugin said in my mind, "Please accept it. It is alright."
I nodded, and took the very pretty dragonscale from dromoka.
"Thank you," I said softly.
Ojetui, not to be outdone, also presented me with a dragon scale from his clan as well. This one was imbued with ice magic so that I could also use it to protect myself. Ugin once again told me to go ahead, and accept it as well, so I did so thanking him as well.
It was then decided that since there was a treaty the next thing had to be a celebration. Though there was not much in the way of food or drink due to the location. Everyone seemed to be in a jovial mood. I sat with Ugin and watched people dance to primitive, but wonderful sounding drum and flute music. I wished that I was able to dance with Ugin., and told him so. Ugin smiled, and flew into the air taking me with him. Then he began to spin, and twist gracefully in the air. Soon other dragons did the same.
For a while everyone was dancing in the sky. I was happy, and began to sing.
This, of course got everyone's attention, and they began to listen to me as my magic swirled around Ugin and me.
As Ugin moved about grass and flowers began to appear in the sand as well as purifying spots of quicksand turning it into drinking water.
When my song ended everyone was silent. Dromoka came forward as did Ojetui.
"Well, well, there is far more to you than meets the eye it would seem. I felt very small blushing Ugin pressed me close to him just in case someone tried something.
Dromoka continued, "Thank you for this gift, Serenity. This will give us some food as well as water until Ojutai, and I can commence with proper trading."
Ojetui nodded, "I agree, thank you for letting us see pure magic as well."
I murmured, "you are welcome," I said blushing.
We sat, and talked for a bit longer, but as the sun began to set. Ugin said that it was time to head home. Dromoka, Ojetui, and the other dragons said their goodbyes as we prepared to head home.
As we flew, Ugin said softly. "You really did a wonderful thing there."
"I did not realize that would happen," I said, "but I was glad that I was able to help. I just wanted to sing for fun."
Ugin pressed me a bit closer to his heart as we flew along.
"Nevertheless you helped a lot of people today."
"I am glad," I said, yawning, it was starting to get dark.
Ugin smiled, "I hate to ask, but would you sing just for me?" I smiled and nodded, then began to sing a song as we flew. Ugin then tried to sing himself. After a second of singing he stopped.
"I don't think that singing works for me," he said. "We dragons are great at many things but singing is not one of them."
"I thought that you sounded good," I said.
Ugin smiled, "I know that you are always being kind, but singing should be done by you, not by me."
I smiled, "but You can sing with me," I said.
I began to sing again, and we flew the rest of the way home in song with Ugin occasionally singing loudly as well. It was a very pleasant flight back home.
When we got home Ugin landed, and entered the lair glancing around to make sure all was well. Then he lay down with me on his heart. By now I was very tired, and happy to be home. Ugin placed a hand over me acting as a blanket. Ugin sighed contentedly. I did the same. As I snuggled into his chest. I stroked his scales.
"Ugin," I whispered, " I love you."
"I love you too," he said softly, and I mean it.
Tears filled my eyes, "Do you mean that truly?" I asked.
"Yes, I love you, I truly do," Ugin said. "I will protect you no matter what."
"Thank you for protecting me."
"Thank you for just being with me," Ugin said.
After a lot of cuddles. I fell into a deep, content sleep.
The words just came from me and I truly meant all of them. Dragons had many emotions like anger and sadness, but love? Love was a hard one for dragons to admit, we are a very proud species after all, but I found it easy to do at this point. I did not love her in the way that a married human couple would love, I loved her as a protector, perhaps more of a father daughter relationship in the terms of humankind.
I doubted that humans had the ability to share their heartbeat as we did, but I was glad that I could share that with her. She liked it, and liked being close to me. As I watched her sleep. I hoped that she would remain with me for the remainder of her days. I did not know what the future would bring, but I was sure that no matter what we would get through it together. I gently pressed her head closer to my heart with a finger she snuggled closer to me sighing contentedly. I then rested as well, making sure that Serenity was totally safe with me, and that no dreams would haunt her tonight.
