Fortunately. Serenity fell asleep and her breathing became more regular.
When Sarkhan, and Narset arrived, I filled them both in on what had happened. They were both shocked by the news. Then Narset began to take a look at Sera's wounds, her face filled with concern.
"What is it?" I asked softly.
"Well her leg is broken so badly I don't think that resetting it is going to fix it. It's really bad. I am not sure that she will ever walk again, at least not without help. Not only that with that blow to her head I wonder if she is going to be okay. Her eyes are already damaged, and this is definitely not going to help that situation. Hopefully she can heal, and rest, so we shall see."
Narset did her best to wrap, and clean her wounds while I kept the healing spell going. I felt absolutely sick to my stomach. I had caused her this pain, because I had left her behind. I voiced these thoughts aloud.
"I don't think that that is the case," Narset replied. "You did what you thought best. Now I don't know this dragon the way that you and Sarkhan do, but I know that Serenity would never hold it against you. I am sure that she knows that you were trying to keep her safe, and when this Nicol Bolas came after her, there was nothing that you could do to help her then. She wanted to protect you, and that was all she truly cared about. She never even considered the danger to herself."
I nodded. I had done what I had deemed appropriate, but in the end it had cost her dearly. I hoped that she would be okay.
Finally Narset was done.
"I have done all I can for her. Just let her rest when she wakes up, keep her quiet, warm, and calm."
Sarkhan asked "Should I warn the other dragons?''
"No not right now, I don't need the whole plane getting ready for a fight that I doubt will come. Serenity messed him up and while I will be going after him. I don't think that the rush is too great."
"I see," Sarkhan said. "Are you leaving Serenity here then?"
"No, I know what happened the last time I left her alone. I will take her with me, and keep her safe."
Sarkhan nodded.
"Alright then I will be off to head home since it's getting dark and about to storm, call us if you need anything else."
I nodded.
"Thanks to both of you."
Narset nodded.
"Dont worry too much Ugin, with you by her side I am sure that Serenity is going to be okay."
"I hope so," I said as they left me alone in the lair.
Once it was quiet, I lay back gently touching Sera with a finger.
"It's going to be alright, you're going to be okay," I said aloud as much to convince myself as to comfort Sera.
I felt her try to snuggle against my chest.
"Shhh it's okay little one I am here." Then I just kept comforting her hoping that she would wake up and be okay, but knowing that she would not be.
I opened up my eyes, and tried to move. Even with Ugin's healing magic there was still a lot of pain. I tried to remember what had happened to me and it all came back in a rush.
"Ugin!" I cried, "are you okay Ugin?"
I felt his hand gently press me closer to his chest.
"I am alright, you saved me."
I tried to move closer to him, putting a bit of weight on my bad leg, but only ended up wincing in pain.
Ugin lay me closer to his heart.
"Shhh it's okay, your leg is very damaged. It will be a while before you can walk properly again."
Hearing the sound of Ugin's steady heartbeat I began to calm down.
"Was that black dragon that attacked you Nicol?" I asked.
"Yes, that was my twin or my now undead twin Nicol Bolas."
"Undead so he is a spirit now?"
"No more like a lich."
I nodded, and tried to think.
"I don't think that Dimenyez would ever be capable of this one. It's someone else, but who?"
"A very good question that I intend to find the answer to," Ugin said, "but right now my worry is you. How do you feel? Are you in pain?"
I nodded, "it's not too bad, but it hurts to move, and my head still hurts."
I also looked around.
"Everything looks blurry."
"I see," Ugin replied. "The blow to your head might have damaged your eyes as they were already injured from your birth. Hopefully it will get better with time."
I nodded, snuggling into his chest for reassurance.
"I am right here if you need anything," Ugin said. "I have some food coming if you're hungry."
Just the thought of food made me sick so I shook my head laying it down on Ugin's chest again.
"Not right now," I said. I shivered. I was cold as well.
Ugin lay his hand over me like a blanket.
"I am right here," he assured me. "Shhh It's alright."
"Ugin," I said. "Please don't leave me like that ever again. I was so scared."
"I know, I am so sorry I made my own nightmare come true."
"Nightmare?" I asked. "About what?"
"That you got hurt because of my brother and I could not stop it," Ugin replied grimly.
I raised my head up to look at him.
"That was your nightmare?"
"Yes I wanted to keep you safe, but he hurt you anyway. I am just glad that he did not shatter your mind with his touch."
"He tried to," I confided. "I saw oblivion, and darkness, but then I saw you and was able to push him back."
Ugin nodded. "He was not happy about that but I am certainly glad that you were able to defeat his mind magic."
A fresh wave of pain hit and I lay my head back down on his chest feeling its warmth and hearing his heartbeat.
"Ugin, will you tell me a story? I don't care what kind, I just want to hear your voice until I fall asleep. I know that it sounds stupid, but…"
Ugin replied gently, interrupting me. "Of course I will and no it's not a stupid request."
He then gently pressed me closer to him and stroked my cheek with his finger. I relaxed snuggling against his heart.
Ugin proceeded to tell me a tale of a dragon, and his daughter aka us and how we traveled the multiverse together singing, and dancing for everyone to see, showing them that humans, and dragons can be a family.
As Ugin spoke the pain began to ease, and sleep began to overtake me. I gently stroked his scales along some old scars on his chest until I fell asleep once again.
I kept telling her the stories long after she had fallen asleep. They seemed to make her happy and frankly I liked making them up. Perhaps someday, I would take her to other planes, and we would do just that. My job was to protect the multiverse after all and getting humankind and dragons to work together was just one way that I could do that and I had the best daughter and partner I could wish for. I checked on Sera and saw that she had a small smile on her face despite the pain that I was sure that she was still in. I kept her warm, and safe, and kept telling her stories the rest of the night in order to help her recover from her injuries and in a way they helped me recover as well.
