Up until I had met Serenity I had kept humans at a distance, I never wanted to hurt them, but they were usually afraid of dragons. The humans that I had dealt with in the past like Jace Beleren and the gatewatch, while good intentioned and brave in their own right, were rash and acted without wisdom. I had always acted in the best interest of the multiverse for the long term., Which may or may not have been the best for humanity, though I never wanted to harm them. I could not really care for them, for they did not trust me nor I them. How I had changed now that I had a daughter to love. I still had my duty that I had given myself long ago, but now I had even more reason to do so.
I lay thinking these things while holding Serenity close to me. She had been the first human that was able to understand me. She trusted my judgment and listened to my lessons. She was the first human that I had been able to get close to, to teach and now to love as my own as a father. I vowed to protect her and to protect the multiverse for her. That was how much Serenity meant to me. I loved her for it and regretted nothing.
The next morning I still felt pretty awful, but Ugin cast a soothing spell on me so that I could at least try to eat something. I managed to eat some soup made of eggs and sea grass that Ugin had made so that it would be easier for me to eat. I ate about half of it, then rested for a bit longer.
Ugin kept up his spells, trying to help keep me calm and quiet, but I wanted to know what had happened. Everything that had led us to this moment so I asked him to tell me.
"Ugin, will you please tell me everything that is happening? I am confused."
Ugin nodded grimly.
"I understand, but I know that things will upset you."
"No, I promise, I won't get upset, I just want to know and understand what is going on."
Ugin nodded.
"Alright, I will tell you, but can we go outside and rest there? The sunshine will help you feel better."
I nodded agreeing, "as long as I am with you."
We made our way outside and Ugin settled in a nice sunny spot. Ugin lay on his back, and I rested against his heart feeling his heartbeat, and warmth. Once I was settled, Ugin told me everything from it all began with his horrible nightmare about me, and Nicol, and how it had unfortunately had come to pass. Of how that dragon that had attacked us was A dracolich version of his twin Nicol, and what my magic had done to him before he had struck me down.
"After you fell I brought you back here, and summoned Sarkhan, and Narset to tell them what was going on. Narset took care of your wounds, but she also told me that your already bad right leg was damaged pretty badly, and walking was going to be even more difficult. The blow to your head was also pretty bad and we did not know the extent of the damage, but from what you had said yesterday I can only assume that your eyes might have been damaged more than before as well though I am hoping that will get better over time.
Sera I am so sorry that it happened, I only wanted to protect you, but I failed."
"Ugin It's not your fault," I said softly.
"You did what you thought best to protect me. I don't blame you at all. I am just worried that I may be more of a burden to you now."
"Absolutely not," Ugin said firmly, "you are my daughter, and I love you no matter what," Ugin said gently, using his hand pressing me into him.
I nodded snuggling against his heart, glad to hear the honesty, and conviction in his voice.
After a few minutes of snuggling against him, and hearing his heartbeat I asked, "what is going to happen Now?"
Ugin took a deep breath, his chest rising.
"Well I need to go after him, he is my twin, and I need to put a stop to whatever his plans might be."
I nodded.
"When do we leave?"
Ugin laughed gently.
"I knew that you would say something like that."
"Well there is no way that I am letting you go alone, Ugin."
"I know and after all that has happened there is no way that I am leaving you behind."
"Good now that the issue is settled we should…,"
Before Ugin could finish the sentence Sarkhan spoke.
"Can you wait another day or so to leave? Narset is making something that will make things easier on Serenity."
I jumped when I heard his voice, but Ugin made no moves other than to squeeze me gently.
After hearing his question, and giving it some thought he replied, "yes we can wait a bit longer, fortunately with him being my twin tracking his aura should still be fairly easy."
"Good," Sarkhan said.
"That's not the only reason you came all of the way here is it?" Ugin asked.
"No not at all, Narset wanted me to check on you two, but it seems that you are just fine."
"Of course we are. I am with Ugin," I said, hugging the dragon.
"So you know what happened to you then?"
"Yes," I nodded.
"Good then," he said. "Also the other dragonlords send their best wishes to you. They are all fond of you."
"Tell them I said thank you."
"I will."
Ugin, and Sarkhan then began to chat about other goings on about Tarkir and apparently all of the talk about regular life comforted me and I began to feel sleepy. I closed my eyes, and snuggled against Ugin's heart, and fell into a restful nap.
Once Serenity had fallen asleep I spoke to Sarkhan in private.
"What did you really come here for?" I asked him.
"Well As I said to check on you two, but as I said you both seem okay Though I am surprised that Serenity took the news about her injuries as well as she did."
"Honestly I was as well, but Serenity is strong, far stronger than most know and I am here for her as well."
Sarkhan nodded. "She is quite amazing, Indeed. I am glad that you both found each other, Ugin."
"I am as well," Sarkhan stood up. "I am going to head back to Narset and let her know that you two are fine."
Ugin nodded. "Let her know that we will be leaving the morning after tomorrow if she will have her preparations done by then?"
Sarkhan nodded, "she will have it done."
"Good," Ugin said. "Good fortune Sarkhan Vol I will see you in a couple of days."
With that, Sarkhan changed into his dragon form, and took off flying toward home.
Once he was gone I turned my attention to the sleeping Serenity, who was resting comfortably on my chest.
Gently I woke her though I hated to do this, but I wanted to spend more time alone with her.
She woke up, and snuggled against me.
"What's wrong?" She asked.
"Nothing," I replied.
"I just want to hear your voice."
I smiled, and began to sing softly to him. I said no words, just sang to him a song trying to give us both peace. When I was finished Ugin gently pressed me closer,
"Thank you, my little one."
For the rest of the day we just spent time together with her, l and both of us were healing and loving each other.
The next morning my wounds had healed enough that Ugin and I decided to see just how much damage had been done to my leg. I tried to walk and promptly almost fell on my face, save for the fact that Ugin caught me. It was like dragging a heavy weight on my right leg.
Fortunately with the cane that Ugin had made me it was at least somewhat easier to get around, but I was still slow and graceless, but at least it was something. As for my eyes they had not gotten any better and for all we knew they might not ever, things far away were very hard to see and I had to look very closely at everything, but I always knew where Ugin was because I could always feel his presence with me. We were that close.
By the time Sunset approached I was exhausted from trying to get around, but at least we knew what I could do.
That night Ugin, and I lay watching the stars. I felt his calm heartbeat, and hugged him close to me.
"Ugin"?
"Yes little one, what is it?"
"I'm scared."
"Scared?"
"Yes I have never planeswalked before save for the time I came here. I am just a little scared about what will happen."
Ugin nodded, and hugged me close to him.
"It's alright I will be by your side the whole time. I promise that I will not let you go."
I snuggled into his chest burying my face against his scales. I could feel his warmth and hear his heart and it made me feel a bit better.
Ugin began to sing to me to comfort me further. His tenor voice was soothing if a bit off key, but I did not mind at all. I loved to hear Ugin sing and I sang with him as we watched the stars above.
When we stopped I felt much better, and began to doze off. Ugin raised his head tickling my cheek with the small beard of downy fur on his chin.
"Don't worry everything will be alright as long as we are together."
I nodded as sleep began to overtake me.
"Thank you Ugin. I love you," and with that I began to fall asleep.
I was glad that Serenity had confided in me that she was scared to planeswalk. It was a reasonable fear when I first had planeswalked millennia before I too had been afraid. I was also very glad that I had been able to calm most of her fears down as well. Now as she slept against my chest. I began to think about what I was going to do with my now undead twin. I had no real solutions, not yet, but I knew that he had to be dealt with, and that it was up to me to do so, but right now I knew that Serenity, and I needed to rest to be ready for anything. I closed my eyes to rest, but hugged my sleeping daughter close to me.
I love you Serenity, you're my beautiful treasured daughter."
She snuggled against my chest in reply, and with that I fell into a meditative sleep.
The next morning Ugin and I were making our final preparations to leave when Sarkhan and Narset arrived. She handed something that was made of cloth to Ugin.
"This will help you protect Sera."
It was a harness that Ugin could wear around his body that had a pouch that I could fit in. The pouch pressed against his chest so I would always be close to his heart. Ugin put it on and it fit him nicely going over his shoulder, but allowing him freedom of movement for his wings and arms.. He put me inside the pouch, and I felt safe, and warm there. Narset seemed pleased. The other dragonlords helped as well. Giving some scales as well as feathers to make it so Sera would be safe. Ugin told her to thank them for both of us.
After we were done talking we all said our goodbyes, promising to return as soon as we were able, and then Ugin took off flying high in the sunlit sky. I sat safe in my pouch, and looked out seeing the landscape. I glanced back at our lair home, and wondered how long it would be before we were cuddling there again. Ugin read my thoughts.
"Don't worry as soon as we are done doing what we must we will be back." I nodded, and hugged him.
"Are you ready?" Ugin asked.
I nodded. "I am ready, Ugin," I said, squeezing his chest.
"Here we go."
With that, we disappeared from the plane of Tarkir in a haze of mist with a spark of prismatic light mixed in and entered the blind eternities.
