Luz awoke to the sound of someone banging on the door. The sound of Hooty screaming could be heard through the house.
"Okay that's enough of that." Eda shouted, opening the door to see Lilith. "Why are you here so early? Luz doesn't wake up this early."
"I'm borrowing your sofa." Lilith said walking past Eda, Lilith then immediately laid herself out on the couch. "I kept being annoyed but the golden boy to get this mission done with, but I haven't had a good sleep in weeks. When I wake up, I have a question for you, but for now let me sleep."
"Okay, then I'm going back to bed." Eda said, walking back up the stairs, but before she even got halfway knocking came to the door again. "What is it now." Eda walked back over to the door opening to see a pile of letters and a package. Eda brought the items inside then placed it all in a barrier for her to deal with later.
"Lilith time to get up." Luz shouted from the kitchen. "Eda allowed me to cook food and I want to see how you guys like it."
Lilith opened her eyes and yawned, having had a good sleep then she smelled the food that Luz was cooking. Lilith then walked into the kitchen to see Eda at the table with a plate full of food and king scarfing down his own food.
"What are you eating?" Lilith asked, sitting down.
"The humans call them pancakes and they aren't that bad." Eda said, taking a bit of one. "You should try some Luz made enough for you too."
Lilith then saw that there was another plate of food at the table and took it as she ate. She was quite impressed with it. "These are amazing." Lilith then quickly took another bit.
"Thanks, I was finally able to get Eda to let me cook some human food since some of the stuff here I can't really eat." Once they were all done eating Luz asked, "What's with the bubble in the living room by the way is that yours Eda or did Lilith do that?"
"Oh, I almost forgot about that." Eda said, making a spell circle summoning the bubble to them. "It was left at the door after Lily came by to sleep on the sofa and I was too tired to care." Eda popped the bubble then laid the box on the table with the mail. "Let's see here, bill, bill, curse, and some note." Eda threw the curse away with it immediately going on fire.
"Is it from the same person that left the box?" Luz asked, putting the dishes in the sink.
"Maybe." Eda said, reading the note aloud. "Dear Eda, the Owl Lady, it has come to our attention that you might be holding a rare species not seen on the Boiling Ilis for some time. We of the wildlife persevering Coven would like for you to return the creature to its natural habitat post haste or we will be forced to report you to the Beast Keeping Coven head. Thank you for your cooperation."
"What are they talking about?" Luz questioned. "I haven't seen any rare creatures around here, unless you're hiding it from me."
"Trust me Luz having anything rare would get the Emperors Coven knocking the door down and me with the worst kind of punishment." Eda said re reading the letter. "They don't even mention what rare Species I have; they want me to let go off."
"I might know what they're talking about, It's the reason I'm here in the first place." Lilith said as Luz gave her a cup of tea.
"I thought you just needed a place to sleep for a bit." Eda said as she put the letter away.
"That was one reason, but the main reason is that it has come to the attention that you are not just knowledgeable about the mermaid but are also keeping it in the Owl House." Lilith explained.
"Okay one I doubt you have any real proof that I'm keeping the mermaid here against their will, which I would never do on purpose, second even if you do have prof, they're a lot safer here then out there at the moment, and third mermaids have rights so they can do as they please including keeping themselves away from Belos." Eda explained back a bit harsher than she wanted. "And besides if I was really keeping a mermaid here you would have found them already. You know a mermaid needs to be at least twenty to be able to walk on land and that's for one day a week or give up their tail forever, which means you wouldn't know they're a mermaid unless they showed you proof with a picture from their memories."
"Your points are valid and the same ones I made when they told me to look into it." Lilith said calmly. "But a scout told us he saw Luz turn in a mermaid in front of Amity."
"I used an illusion for that." Luz lied. "I wanted to show Amity what I saw when we saw the mermaid and maybe get her to blush a little."
Lilith sighed knowing Luz was lying then said, "Eda please explain how this is even possible, and I swear I will deal with the coven."
Eda and Luz looked at each other and Luz nodded her head, Eda sighed then explained, "She's half mermaid, her mother gave up her tail a long time ago and Luz can gain her tail when her whole body goes into water."
"Wait, so your half mermaid and half human?" Lilith questioned. "But Mermaids are residents of the boiling Ilis."
"Not quite, you see mermaids are considered a legend in the human realm." Luz explained. "Other magical things leak into the human realm, what made you think mermaids didn't get to the human realm too."
Lilith sighed deeply then said, "Well with this new information, I really will have to tell Belos about Luz."
"Just to let you know I'm not leaving the owl house." Lus stated. "Eda's my mentor and I still don't like the Emperor that much. Pulse I feel that going to him for help at the moment would put me in more danger."
"Eda, please help me with this." Lilith said, looking towards Eda.
"Sorry sis I really do think laws your boss made concerning mermaids but I've gotta agree with Luz." Eda agreed. "We aren't like you; we don't fit in with the whole coven system people are going to think it's weird the Owl lady's apprentice can just walk into the castle like nothing is going to happen to them and we're not that bad out here for the most part. Luz has her own rights considering she's half mermaid and half human. She's kept her secret this long just give her the chance to show she can keep it until her time here is up."
Lilith sighed knowing that it was useless to talk to them about how the coven could help them when it hasn't shown a good side to them till now, and she had to admit that Luz and Eda were right people are looking for the mermaid and being Luz to the castle would be like announcing it to the world. As Lilith left Luz offered a few scales she shed as a sign of good faith that she is well protected at the Owl house. Lilith took the scales then went on her way to the castle to tell Belos the news she had learned but not without quickly spotting a scout running from the owl house to the town nearby.
"I'm telling you I know where the mermaid is." the scout said into his scroll. "She's at the…"
"At the what." Lilith injected taking the scroll and breaking it. "Now why don't we have a long talk of our own at the castle with the Emperor." Lilith then made a spell circle that encased the scout in ice. "Today just gets better and better."
