The forest leaves glittered in the moonlight, a reddish tint covering them, obscuring their natural green luster. They were heavy under that violent hue, sagging with its unrelenting weight. The forest drooped and bowed around the humanoid figure dashing through it, all of his humanity lost in terror. He scrambled and thrashed through the thick, tangled foliage surrounding him, the sounds of distant screams propelling him forward. His open gash scraped and collided with huge thorn vines covering adjacent oaks, causing him pain that he couldn't let himself feel. The moon shed eerie spotlights around him, casting inky tendrils out from the trees. They grabbed at his arms and legs, trying to keep him from escaping. The man's eyes darted this way and that, scanning the ashy sky for any trace of his hunter. Reaching the top of a steep incline, he tripped on a protruding tree root. He slammed into the floor of the forest. He tumbled down the hill. He rammed his head against rocks and debris. He skidded to a halt at the bottom.
Nausea overtook his emotions as he struggled to his feet. The effort was too much, and he hunched over, spewing half-digested baked beans and cabbage onto the forest floor. He crumbled back to the earth, gasping and wheezing for air. Then, he heard a quiet thump behind him. The sound was subtle, but it could still be made out. The man pivoted, raising his arms in a panicked attempt at protection, just as a clawed hand collided with them. He screamed in pain as they flopped limply to his sides, completely immobile. He looked up at the tall figure before him. A twisted leer covered the creature's face, and it put a finger to its cracked lips.
The forest shone red in the moonlight.
