Chapter 6: Meeting the Neighbors

The smell of freshly baked pastries wafted through the kitchen as Naruto carefully arranged them on a tray. His grin widened with every perfectly placed croissant, muffin, and danish. "There! Perfect. Who could say no to this?"

Kurama, lounging in his miniature fox form on the counter, yawned lazily. "You're putting too much effort into this, kid. Just knock on the door and say hi."

Naruto waved him off. "It's not just about saying hi! First impressions are important, especially with neighbors. We're gonna be living next to these people for a while. Gotta make sure they like us!"

From the living room, Sasuke's voice cut through the air like a knife. "You're overthinking it, dobe. It's a simple introduction, not a diplomatic mission."

Naruto peeked into the living room, balancing the tray on one hand. Sasuke sat by the window, his arms crossed and his usual expression of detached boredom firmly in place. "Oh, come on, Sasuke! You can't be this grumpy all the time. Just try being nice for once!"

Sasuke's dark eyes flicked toward Naruto, narrowing slightly. "I'll be nice when there's a reason to be."

"Fine, be like that." Naruto huffed but smirked. "Guess I'll just tell them I'm the only cool one living here."

"Do that, and I'll make sure you regret it," Sasuke replied flatly, standing up and walking toward the door.

--

The pair stepped outside, the mid-morning sun casting a warm glow over the neighborhood. The Hyoudou house stood out with its well-kept lawn and neatly trimmed hedges. Naruto took a deep breath, his enthusiasm unshaken.

"They seem like nice people," Naruto said as they walked up the driveway.

"You don't know that," Sasuke muttered.

Naruto ignored him and rang the doorbell. A muffled voice called out from inside, followed by the sound of footsteps approaching. Moments later, the door swung open to reveal Miki Hyoudou, her warm smile instantly putting Naruto at ease.

"Hello!" Miki greeted, her eyes flicking to the tray of pastries. "Can I help you?"

Naruto bowed slightly, his voice bright and cheerful. "Hi there! I'm Naruto Uzumaki, and this is my friend Sasuke Uchiha. We just moved in next door and wanted to introduce ourselves!"

He held out the tray with both hands. "We brought some pastries. Hope you like sweets!"

Miki's face lit up as she accepted the tray. "How thoughtful! Thank you so much. Please, come in!"

Naruto and Sasuke stepped into the house, greeted by the cozy ambiance of the Hyoudou home. Family photos adorned the walls, and the faint sound of a television came from the living room.

"Gorou, Issei! Come meet the new neighbors!" Miki called out as she led them to the dining table.

Naruto took a seat, glancing around with curiosity. "You've got a nice place! It feels really homey."

Miki beamed. "Thank you! We've lived here for years. It's not fancy, but it's ours."

Gorou appeared a moment later, a tall, broad-shouldered man with a calm demeanor. "New neighbors?" he asked, his deep voice friendly.

"That's us," Naruto said with a grin. "Naruto and Sasuke. We just moved in last week."

"Pleasure to meet you," Gorou said, shaking their hands.

--

The sound of hurried footsteps echoed from upstairs, followed by a loud crash. "Ow! Stupid shelf!" a voice muttered before Issei came stumbling down the stairs, rubbing his head.

"What's going on?" he asked, his eyes landing on the two unfamiliar faces in the dining room.

"These are our new neighbors," Miki said, motioning toward Naruto and Sasuke. "Naruto and Sasuke."

Naruto waved cheerfully. "Yo! Nice to meet you!"

Issei blinked, his gaze darting between them. "Uh, hey. I'm Issei."

Sasuke, as usual, remained silent, offering only a curt nod.

"Issei," Miki said, her tone teasing, "why don't you take them on a tour of the neighborhood later? You could show them all the good spots."

Issei scratched the back of his head. "Uh, sure. If you guys want."

Naruto's grin widened. "That'd be awesome! Thanks, man."

--

As the family dug into the pastries, the conversation flowed easily. Naruto's friendly demeanor seemed to put everyone at ease, and even Sasuke, though quiet, didn't exude his usual level of hostility.

"These are amazing!" Miki said, savoring a flaky croissant. "Did you make these yourselves?"

"Yup!" Naruto said proudly. "We run a bakery together. Baking's kind of my thing."

"It's incredible," Gorou added. "You've got real talent."

"Thanks!" Naruto said, rubbing the back of his head.

"And what about you, Sasuke?" Miki asked, turning her attention to him.

Sasuke glanced at her, his expression unreadable. "I handle the practical side of things."

"Sounds like a good partnership," Gorou said with a nod.

Naruto chuckled. "Yeah, you could say that. Sasuke keeps me from burning the place down."

Miki and Gorou laughed, but Issei remained quiet, his eyes lingering on the pair with a hint of curiosity. Something about them felt… different. But he couldn't quite put his finger on it.

--

After more small talk, Naruto and Sasuke excused themselves, promising to visit again soon. As they walked back to their house, the Hyoudou family waved from the door.

"They're nice," Naruto said, glancing at Sasuke.

"They're normal," Sasuke replied.

Naruto grinned. "Exactly! Isn't it refreshing to meet normal people for once?"

Sasuke didn't respond, his gaze shifting to the horizon.

Inside the house, the tailed beasts were lounging around. Kurama stretched out on the couch, while Matatabi napped in a sunny spot by the window.

"How'd it go?" Kurama asked without opening his eyes.

"Pretty great!" Naruto said, flopping onto the couch beside him. "They don't suspect a thing."

"Good," Shukaku grumbled from his corner. "The last thing we need is more complications."

"Yeah, yeah," Naruto said, waving him off. "They're just regular people. No big deal."

Sasuke leaned against the wall, his arms crossed. "For now."

Naruto glanced at him, his smile fading slightly. "Come on, Sasuke. We've got a chance at a normal life here. Let's enjoy it while we can."

Sasuke didn't respond, his eyes distant. But deep down, he couldn't shake the feeling that their peaceful days in Kuoh wouldn't last.
