Nighteye dispatched everyone to patrol duty. He and Bubble Girl went one way, Mirio, going by the hero name Lemillion, and Izuku went another way, and Phantom took to the skies. Phantom had eyes on both Nighteye's team and Mirio's team. He stayed invisible so no one could recognize him.
Mirio and Izuku were walking down a street and several people noticed the two. Izuku said, "This is sorta nerve-wracking."
Mirio replied, "What gives? You went out on patrol during your internship, didn't you? Though, I guess I don't blame you for being shaken with what went down."
Izuku said, "Oh, no, it's not that. I just kinda missed out on learning some of the basics, so….."
"Yeah?" Mirio replied. "Huh, that must be strange. Ah, don't you worry. Sir and Bubble are the ones who are actually watching the target today, so I can teach you all about patrol duty. We'll get you up to snuff! Just watch and learn, my friend!"
Izuku was internally thinking about why All Might never told him about Sir Nighteye.
Mirio then said, "Hey, we forgot something. Our hero names! We should know each other's, right?"
Izuku nodded, "Oh, yeah, totally. I'm Deku."
Mirio was confused, "Deku? Like "Deck"? That's weird."
Izuku retorted, "I like it."
Mirio said, "OK, well, I'm Lemillion. For the number of people I'll save. You know. Can't save them all. But I can at least shoot for saving 1,000,000 instead, so that's what I'm doing! When we put on our costumes and start hitting the streets, that's when we become heroes! So, don't let your guard down, Deku! Oh, by the way, what's Danny's hero name?"
Izuku answered, "It's Phantom."
Mirio smiled, "I like that."
They continued walking, then suddenly, a little girl named Eri bumped into Izuku from the alleyway. She fell to the ground. Izuku saw her and said, "Whoa, I'm sorry. You took a tumble. Are you OK? Can I help you up?"
He tried to help her up, but she was trembling.
Phantom was flying in the sky when he passed by Izuku and Mirio and saw Eri. He then spotted a shadowy figure coming from the alley towards Izuku, Mirio, and Eri. He flew down silently to see what was happening.
The shadowy figure was Chisaki, who walked towards Eri and said, "You should be more careful. We don't wanna cause trouble for the heroes."
The three heroes immediately recognized the man as the villain that Nighteye was tracking.
Chisaki continued, "I hope you'll forgive my daughter, hero. I don't know what to do with her. Always playing rough, bumping into things."
Izuku had a worried expression on his face, which Mirio noticed and quickly pulled Izuku's mask over, "Whoopsie-daisy looks like that darn mask came off again. You might wanna think about getting it resized, my friend." He turned to Chisaki, "I'm so sorry about that. It was our fault, too."
Both Izuku and Phantom realized what Mirio was up to. He didn't want to throw suspicion onto Chisaki.
Mirio continued, "I know that mask! You must be from the Hasssaikai, right? You guys are famous around here."
Chisaki replied, "Yeah, please don't mind the mask. It keeps out the filth. I don't believe I've seen you two in the area before."
Phantom silently was glad that he stayed invisible so Chisaki didn't see him.
Mirio said, "Right! Well, we're still pretty new, but you probably already guessed that much. Now, on your feet, partner. Can't do much hero-ing from down there."
Chisaki asked, "So, what agency do you belong to?"
Mirio then lied as he didn't want to give away Nighteye's name, "We're only students! Far too lowly to be claiming association with an agency. We're just using our internships to get some experience. Speaking of which, we need to finish patrolling this division by lunch. Come on, let's go."
Izuku nodded, "Right." But as he tried to get up, Eri held onto him.
She whispered, "Please. Please don't go."
Phantom heard it too. His ghostly nature was starting to activate big time. He wanted to save her so bad, but her "father" was a major wildcard.
Izuku then said, "Um, excuse me. I'm sorry, but your daughter seems scared."
Chisaki replied, "A reaction to being scolded."
Mirio was starting to get worried, as Izuku continued, "She's got bandages all over. Those are just from playing rough?"
Chisaki replied, "Eri's an exceptionally clumsy girl."
Izuku asked, "Does that seem like it's normal to you?"
Chisaki retorted, "It's dangerous to make assumptions about what's normal for other people."
Mirio chuckled, "Yeah, everybody's different, am I right?" Internally, he was freaking out.
Izuku asked, "Tell me, what are you doing to this girl?"
Phantom wanted to do something, but what? He thought for a moment. Suddenly he remembered when the ghost Nocturn put everyone in Amity Park in those dream helmets, he had to enter their minds to wake them up. He had an idea so that he could talk to this girl without causing suspicion.
Phantom quickly phased into Eri and entered her mind. He was in an empty void and saw Eri, or at least the version of her in her mind, crying. He slowly approached her, "Are you OK?"
Eri turned around, "Who are you? Are you a ghost or something?"
Phantom chuckled, "Kind of. My name is Danny, but when I look like this, I go by Phantom. I'm a hero, in training so to speak. I was patrolling the skies of this city when I saw you run into my friend's arms. He's concerned about you, like I am. Why do you want to get away from your father?"
Eri cried, "He's not my dad. He's a bad man. But I'm bad, too."
Phantom asked, "Why do you say that?"
Eri said, "This horn on my head. It makes me do things that I can't control. Because of it, I wiped my daddy out of existence. That made my mommy leave me and never come back."
Phantom thought for a moment, "She wiped her dad from existence. Maybe she has a Quirk related to time. Clockwork might know more. Should ask him later."
He then said, "I have a feeling that you didn't mean to. You couldn't control your power. When I first got my powers, I couldn't control them, either. I was always sinking into the floor and going through things randomly. With practice and training, you won't lose control. But why is that bad man bad?"
Eri cried, "He takes me apart and steals my blood. I don't know why. It always hurts."
Phantom was pissed. He immediately knew she was being experimented on, something that made his blood boil."
Eri looked up, "Will you and that boy I ran into save me?"
Phantom knelt down to her, "We will save you. No matter what."
Outside in the real world, Chisaki sighed, "You heroes really pick up on the subtlest things, don't you? Very well. This situation is embarrassing. So I'd prefer to discuss it where we won't be overheard."
Chisaki turned and walked into the alley behind him, Mirio and Izuku following, with Eri in Izuku's arms.
Chisaki said, "Hard to admit that you can't control your own child, but lately Eri defies me no matter what I try."
Mirio replied, "Parenting, man. Sounds rough. That can't be easy."
Chisaki sighed, "Yes, children are tricky. So determined to do whatever they want that sometimes they just don't listen." He peeled back some of his glove and looked back at Eri.
Eri saw this and started to freak out.
In her mind, her mind self started to freak out. Phantom noticed, "What's wrong?"
Eri cried, "The bad man. He will use his power if I don't go with him. He'll hurt all of you. I have to go."
Phantom wanted to say something, but stopped. His ghostly nature was going insane right now, but it sounded like this bad man had a very dangerous power. He had to think of something.
He thought of an idea. He hated the idea that he would have to let her go with the bad man, but he could keep track of her somehow. He reached into his belt and pulled out one of Clockwork's medallions.
He then said, "Here. I want you to hold onto this."
Eri asked, "What is it?"
Phantom answered, "It's a special necklace that no one can take away from you. And it will let me know where you are at all times. I promise that my friend and I will come and rescue you from the bad man."
Eri looked up at him, "You promise?"
Phantom held out his pinky, "Pinky promise."
Eri hesitated, then held out her pinky and pinky promised Phantom.
Phantom then put the medallion around Eri's neck. "I have to leave you for now, but I promised that we will see each other again soon."
Eri smiled, "Bye, bye, Danny Phantom."
Phantom chuckled at that, since that used to be his hero name. He phased out of Eri's mind and stayed invisible next to Izuku and Mirio.
Eri let go of Izuku and ran to Chisaki, who said, "Oh, good. Done with your temper tantrum? Sorry to involve you in our family drama. I'm sure you have better things to be doing. Good luck with your internships." Chisaki turned and walked away with Eri.
Izuku wanted to follow them, but Mirio stopped them, "We're not going after them? Didn't you notice? He was ready to get violent. That's why she went back. If we keep pushing him, he's gonna be even harder to catch. For now, let's report to Sir."
Phantom then lifted his invisibility, "As much as it pains me, I agree with Mirio."
Izuku was shocked, "When did you get here, Danny?"
Phantom sighed, "I've been here for a while. I'll talk later. Let's just go report to Sir Nighteye for now."
Meanwhile, Sir Nighteye and Bubble Girl were outside the place that they discovered was the secret hiding place of the Shie Hassaikai. Bubble Girl said, "They may be weaker than they used to be, but the yakuza still know how to pick a stronghold. Nice, high walls and not too many windows, right?"
Nighteye replied, "After a week and a half of surveillance, I feel that there are fewer comings and goings today."
Bubble Girl's phone went off and she answered it, "It's Million. He says they came into contact with Chisaki."
In the hideout, Chisaki said to Kurono, who was carrying Eri, "The young people today are sicker than ever. Kurono, prepare the bath."
Kurono replied, "Yes, sir."
They passed the henchman that was in charge of watching Eri and Chisaki used his Quirk to make him explode in a big splash of blood.
Chisaki said, "And clean that up."
Kurono replied, "Right."
Chisaki sighed, "This is maddening. They're all infected with hero syndrome."
Eri cringed at the sight of the blood. But then she remembered the green haired boy she ran into. And she remembered the ghost boy. She looked at her pinky and remembered the promise he made. That made her smile a little.
Back out on the streets, Mirio, Izuku, and Phantom met up with Nighteye and Bubble Girl. Mirio said, "Sorry! It was a total oops. I mean, wow, what are the odds of randomly running into a target on the street like that?"
Nighteye replied, "No, I must accept responsibility. I should have used Foresight on you three. It's my fault."
Bubble Girl added, "I'm just glad you guys are OK. You could've been in danger if he'd suspect something."
Phantom said, "That's why I stayed invisible, so he wouldn't see me."
Izuku added, "It didn't feel all that scary to me."
Nighteye said, "Chisaki and his gang are involved in a recent traffic accident caused by a group of hoodlums. Which isn't remarkable in and of itself. Except, there were zero casualties. The thieves experienced intense pain and lost consciousness, but they were uninjured and even reported that pre-existing ailments like rheumatism and cavities were completely gone. The authorities believed Chisaki's Quirk may have been responsible, but with the villains caught and nobody harmed, there was no crime to accuse him of."
Bubble Girl added, "The money that was stolen burned up, so there was nothing left to recover. The police didn't find any sign of a crime in that regard, either, but the whole thing seemed suspicious, so Nighteye Agency began watching Hassaikai. We haven't figured out what it is yet, but we know they're up to something."
Mirio then said, "Oh, I almost forgot, Sir. We got lucky, at least a little. Our brief encounter yielded some new intel. Chisaki, he has a daughter."
"A daughter?" Nighteye asked.
Izuku said, "A little girl he called Eri. Her limbs were all wrapped up in bandages. I don't know anything else about her, but she was asking for help. There must be something we can do to protect her."
Nighteye glared at Izuku, "I won't let your arrogance interfere with this case. Haste won't help the situation. Take your time pursuing a target. If you rush, they are that much more likely to escape. You're not so special that you can save whoever you want whenever you want. We've asked other agencies to team up with us. We must first predict our opponent's moves and then make preparations to face them. Good intentions alone aren't enough to save the world. The wisest villains hide in the shadows. In order to find them, we must watch and wait."
Nighteye was about to give another order, but then Phantom interrupted, "Eri's being experimented on by Chisaki."
Izuku and Mirio were shocked to hear that. Nighteye turned to Phantom, "And how do you know this?"
Phantom answered, "Because she told me herself."
Everyone was shocked to hear that. Nighteye asked, "Care for an explanation?"
Phantom explained, "It's part of my possession power. I can phase into someone's mind, even when they're asleep and I can enter their dreams. Don't ask, it's a long story. I phased into her head and spoke with the mind version of her. She's scared. She's scared of Chisaki and scared of herself. Chisaki's Quirk has something to do with tearing people apart then putting them back together again, as she said he's doing that to her and stealing her blood. Her Quirk must have something to do with time manipulation as she said she accidentally erased her father from existence, due to the horn on her head. My guess, Chisaki is taking her blood to exploit her power through other means."
Nighteye stared at Phantom, then said, "That may be true, but we need more data. Only to confirm what she said."
Phantom continued, "I have a way to track where she is. I left her something that only I can track. I just have to….make a tracker first. Once I've done that, I will be able to track where she is."
Nighteye replied, "Smart thinking. We'll discuss this further later. Now, the three of you should head back into the office for today. Bubble Girl, let's go." He and Bubble Girl left, leaving the three boys standing there while rain dropped onto them.
Back at the Hassaikai hideout, Chisaki led Eri to a room with a chair surrounded by lab equipment. Chisaki sighed, "Eri, you have to stop disobeying me like this. You're the core of the plan, you know, and I would hate to have to get my hands dirty."
Another henchman, Mimic, entered the room, "Overhaul, you got a sec? It's Shigaraki from the League of Villains. He says that he's got an answer for you."
The next day, at UA High, Class 1-A were sitting in their homeroom. Bakugo looked worse for wear. Mina asked, "So, like, what happened to Bakugo? Was he fighting again?"
Kaminari answered, "He's not the only one busted up. Look at the back of the room."
He pointed to Shoto, who looked busted up, too. Mina shrieked, "His beautiful face! Who would do such a thing?"
Kaminari answered, "The provisional license classes sure sound tough."
Mina smiled, "Must be great workouts, though!"
Bakugo shouted, "Stop talking like I'm not here!"
Tenya shouted, "Class is starting now! Sadly, I must mark Tsu and Uraraka tardy."
Momo explained, "Their absences are excused."
Jiro looked around, "Kirishima isn't here either, is he?"
Sero replied, "Oh, you didn't hear? Those three found places to do work studies."
Jiro asked, "Whoa, for real?"
Momo asked, "Danny, how did your first day with Izuku go at your work study?"
Danny shrugged, "It went OK. Can't say anymore as what the agency is working on is classified."
Bakugo shouted, "I don't wanna hear about you getting ahead of me!"
Izuku was having a hard time focusing in his classes. He had so much pent up frustrations about Eri, Nighteye, and what All Might wasn't telling him. He even knew that Danny was keeping secrets from him and Izuku was becoming more curious about Danny. Speaking of which, Danny noticed and said, "Let's go find All Might. He did tell me that he owed you an explanation."
All Might was outside jogging when he heard something coming towards him and fast. He turned to see Izuku running towards him, using One For All to boost his speed, "I have to talk to you, All Might!"
All Might was shocked, "Whoa, OK, Young Midoriya is here!"
Izuku stopped right in front of All Might. Danny suddenly appeared next to him, "Dude, you didn't need to go all gun ho to reach him."
All Might asked, "Hold on, how did you two find me all the way out here?"
Danny shrugged, "I looked around in the sky and found you. Izuku heard and ran all the way here."
All Might sighed, then Izuku said, "You knew what I was walking into. Nighteye understands how One For All works. And he wanted you to pass it on to Togata, not me. You had to know I'd find out everything. So why didn't you warn me about it?"
All Might sighed, then looked over at Danny, "I guess you're right."
Danny nodded, "Exactly. He needs to know. I warned you when I reported what happened."
Izuku asked, "Wait, how did you know?"
Danny answered, "I had a duplicate watch over your trial against Nighteye. He reported back to me what happened, and I reported it to All Might, as agreed."
All Might said, "I wasn't sure it was my place to tell you, Young Midoriya."
Izuku shouted, "Of course it was! To hear all of this at once, be rejected by him, and before I even had a chance to make sense of it all. The worst part was not knowing why you kept it a secret. How I should feel about it. I need to know everything, All Might. Not as your fan, but as your successor."
Danny agreed, "He's right, old man."
All Might sighed, "I didn't think knowing this information would help with your development. But if you really want the truth, fine. However, you may regret this."
"I won't," Izuku said. "Anything's better than having you keep secrets from me."
All Might told his story, "OK. So Nighteye had always been a fan of mine. It was my policy not to take on sidekicks, but eventually I gave in and let him be my number two. We worked together for about 5 years. He was the brain behind my operations. But, six years ago, we dissolved our partnership because of my injury. Turns out we had different values. He wanted me to retire, I didn't. He was demanding that I find a replacement right away. But I didn't have a choice in mind yet. Then, I realized he used his Foresight on me, which I told him never to do. He said that if I continued, then I would face a villain and die a gruesome death. I still continued on my own path. The two of us parted ways after that argument. We couldn't agree about my future. Principal Nezu recommended Young Togata to me, but before I could meet him, I ended up running into you, Young Midoriya, while also running into you, Young Fenton. I'm sorry. I didn't want to tell you, Young Midoriya. Because you're my fan."
Izuku muttered, "You'll die?"
All Might continued, "After we met and I decided I would pass my power onto you, I told Nighteye my plan. But he was so opposed to the idea, and the rift between us grew even deeper. He rejected my decision. He thought I was an idiot, throwing my power away. So he started training a candidate he thought was better."
Danny sighed, "Mirio. Of course."
Izuku then said, "Wait. Tell me about Nighteye's vision. How far into the future was it?"
All Might answered, "Six to seven years. The further into the future he sees, the harder it is to know exactly when something will happen. But his Foresight had never been wrong."
Izuku realized, "Wait, then that would be this year or the next. You're kidding. Right? This can't happen. I want you to live, All Might! Do you remember what you said at the sports festival? Our promise? I can't do that yet. So live! Until I can keep our pact. Watch me tell them "I am here". I need you here. Don't you understand?"
All Might sighed, "Young Midoriya. Back then, when I heard I would die, I accepted that as my future. I just figured I'd keep running at full speed until I got to the finish line. And then, when I was fighting All For One, I thought that was the end of the race. But, you two were there. You see, all those days we spent with one another affected me. Midoriya, you were timed and Quirkless, but you had heart. And then your mother told me to live so I could protect and help raise you. And Young Fenton, I was assigned to be your mentor and I want to see that through to the very end. So, despite my future, I'll keep fighting with both of you at my side. Because you two have changed me, I promise that I will live. I won't be killed. I will mold my fate and strike down anything else that gets in our way with this fist. But you see, so far everything has been as he said. In each case, Nighteye's predictions have come true. And that's why I can't face him after all these years. Please know that I never wanted to become a shackle holding you back, Young Midoriya. Hey. Who knows, maybe I've already reshaped my destiny into the future I wanted."
He gave Danny a knowing look, remembering what Danny told him about fighting his dark future self.
Izuku said, "Not yet. We can't be positive that his prediction won't come true. It can't happen. I refuse to let it. That's why, no matter what happens to you, I'll be there to help fight fate."
Danny added, "And I'll help, too. I know that the future is never written in stone. While some things have to happen, not everything does." He gave All Might a knowing look. Izuku noticed, but didn't say anything.
All Might smiled, "I'll try not to be too much trouble. I promise."
He turned to restart his jog, but then Izuku interrupted, "Hold on. Have Nighteye use his Foresight on you again! Make up with him! Then we'll see if the future has already been changed!"
All Might stuttered, "Uh….doesn't that seem a little….I don't know…"
"It's a matter of life and death!" Izuku shouted. "I'll try to bargain with him."
Danny sighed, "Dude, that might not be the best idea, considering Nighteye and all."
At the Hassaikai hideout, Shigaraki walked into a room where Chisaki was waiting. He sighed, "What a boring office."
Chisaki replied, "I don't like overly cluttered rooms."
Shigaraki said, "You had me walking in circles underground for 30 minutes. I'm not an ant."
Mimic was sitting next to Chisaki, "More importantly, did you really mean what you said on the phone the other day? That you'll join us under the right conditions?"
Shigaraki glared at the two opposite him, but was ready to answer.
