I will be the one who chases you out in the snow, go where you tunnel down and the trouble starts, I will follow you out and carry all the pain away

la dispute - "fulton street ii"

prologue

If Paul had known they would end up this way, he would've held her a little longer, a little tighter the last night he'd seen her. He would've relished the softness of her skin and the jasmine in her scent and the serenity of watching her eyes close as she drifted to sleep. He would've whispered to her—over and over and over again—that he was hers, that he loved her, that he would always choose her.

He would've never let her go.

And if he hadn't, they wouldn't be standing on opposite sides of the treaty line, one flanking his Alpha, a lethal snarl ripping through his throat as a white-hot flame of rage burned inside him; and the other with her hand outstretched, skin glinting in the sunlight as sorrow and yearning and something predatory, something starving swam in the blood red of her eyes.

No, it wasn't supposed to be like this. Paul's missing girlfriend wasn't supposed to be a bloodsucker.

a/n: It's been a long time since I've posted anything on FFn. I've been writing on ao3, but I know that people are still reading and engaging with Twilight stories on here, so I figured I'd share it here for anyone who might be interested.

A few things... 1) This story is written in the style of a vignette, follows a non-linear narrative, and will flip back and forth between the past and present so chapters will be on the shorter side. 2) I have beef with canon, with SM, and with the way she stereotypically portrayed her Native characters. I've tried my best to breathe some life into Paul and explore his character beyond the "hot-headed" persona we often see. If that's something you're interested in, then I hope you'll stick around. 3) The OC in this story is Mexican and will (as well as her family) speak a little bit of Spanish. I'm outing myself as a no sabo kid (lol), so I'll be using a translator - which means if any translations seem odd and/or not correct, feel free to let me know. 4) This story is gonna be heavy. There's a lot of conflict, including some anti-imprinting sentiments, and Paul's relationships with major characters (like Sam, for example) are different than canon. Some major themes include depression, grief/mourning, and violence. There will be smut at some point as well.

I'd love to hear any thoughts you have. Thanks for reading!
