Chapter 3: Catching Their First Pokemon

Sam, Lincoln, and Lucy have temporarily separated to search Route 1 for a Pokemon to catch. "Maybe a blue mini skirt, with a matching sleeveless blouse, and a white ribbon tying your hair into a ponytail," Snivy said from on top of Sam's head.

"I keep telling you, that's not my style," Sam said with a sigh. "Can't you suggest something less…pop idol?"

"I don't see why you keep shooting down my ideas," Snivy said with a huff.

"Because you keep suggesting things that aren't my style," Sam shot back frustrated. "Can you suggest something more rock and roll, metal, or even punk?"

"But you should be wearing something to show off your figure!" The Grass Snake whined.

"Can we please stop talking about this?" Sam asked, crossing her arms. Snivy looked down at her trainer with a questioning gaze.

"There's something else on your mind, isn't there," the Pokemon asked her trainer, moving to her shoulder. Sam looked away from her. "Please talk to me, I'm your partner," she said in a sympathetic tone.

"It's kind of a long story," the rocker said in a depressed voice.

"I'm here to listen," Snivy said while nuzzling her face.

"Thanks dude," Sam said, smiling at her. "Okay, it started a couple of days ago…". So she told her starter about where she, Lincoln, and Lucy came from. About how Lincoln's sister confessed to her and how she turned her down. How Arceus picked them and brought them to this world for a mission. "…Then we went to see Professor Juniper and got you guys," Sam said, feeling better getting some of that off her chest.

"You certainly have been through a lot, haven't you," Snivy said in a sympathetic voice, nuzzling her face. "I suppose I didn't help either."

"It's no big deal, just dial it back a bit," the blonde trainers replied, petting her head.

"Maybe I could start suggesting something more to your style," the Grass Type said while thinking.

"I would like that," Sam told her Pokemon. Both then saw something come running out of the bush in front of them. "What's that Pokemon?" She asked out loud, pulling her phone and aiming it at the Pokemon.

Galarian Zigzagoon, the Tiny Raccoon Pokemon. Its restlessness has it constantly running around. If it sees another Pokemon, it will purposely run into them in order to start a fight.

"Galarian? What's it doing here?" Sam questioned, looking at the Pokemon. The Zigzagoon then notices the trainer and Pokemon.

"Enemy!" He said happily, before charging towards them. As he did, his head started to glow. Snivy then jumped off Sam's shoulder and stood in front of her.

"Snivy! Use Vine Whip!" Sam ordered. She sent out her vines to strike it, sending Zigzagoon off to the side.

"Fun! More!" Zigzagoon said happily, before charging towards Snivy to Tackle her.

"There's something wrong with this brute!" Snivy said annoyed, seeing her opponent charging again.

"Try to dodge and-" was all Sam got to say, before Snivy did something on her own. Once Zigzagoon got close, Snivy's tail glowed silver, and she jumped smacking her tail on its head.

"Fun! Thanks!" Zigzagoon said, before fainting.

"How uncouth," Snivy said with a huff, looking away.

"What was that?" Sam asked her Pokemon, surprised. Snivy just looked at her confused with a head tilt. "The move with your tail?" She clarified.

"Oh! That was Iron Tail, my egg move," Snivy replied happily, before looking embarrassed. "I guess I forgot to tell you about it."

"Yeah," the blonde said with a chuckle, before looking at the knocked out Pokemon. "What should we do?"

"As much as I hate to say it, but you should catch him," Snivy said with a sour expression. "He's an uncouth brute, but he might be useful for the gym challenge."

"You think so?" Sam asked before noticing what she said. "Wait! How do you know it's a guy?"

"Instincts," the Grass Snake Pokemon said proudly.

"Sure," her trainer said in a deadpan tone, before returning to normal. "I guess he's better than that Purrloin." She then grabbed an empty pokeball, tossed it at him, and it shook before stopping.

"Alright, I caught my first Pokemon," Sam said, picking up the pokeball.

"Congratulations darling," Snivy said, getting back onto her trainer's shoulder. "Should we go back to camp?"

"Let's keep looking," Sam said, petting Snivy's head. "I'm going to need more than you and Zigzagoon." Snivy nodded and they continued walking.

[With Lucy]

Lucy was searching for a Pokemon that she wanted on her team, not finding any in particular. Oshawott was currently being carried by her, while she lectured him why he shouldn't monologue during a battle.

"But Mistress, how else will our enemies know to fear us?" Oshawott questioned his trainer.

"Sigh, we don't need them to," Lucy said in her monotone voice. Both said nothing for a few seconds, before the Pokemon spoke up.

"Mistress, what are you looking for?" Oshawott asked, getting the girl to look at him. "I mean, we came across a couple different Pokemon already. A Patrat, a Lillipup, and a Pidove. Any of them would have made excellent servants for you. So why not catch any of them?"

"Sigh, I just didn't feel like any of them were right for me," the goth replied. "I don't really need to catch any Pokemon, since I'm not planning on doing the gym challenge."

"But what if your friends need help?" the Sea Otter Pokemon questioned. "How can you help them if you don't have any Pokemon?"

"I guess you're right," Lucy replied while looking around. Suddenly something fell onto her head. "Ow!" She said as she started to rub her head.

"Mistress! Are you okay?!" Oshawott shouted in worry.

"Yeah, it only hurt a little," Lucy reassured him, before looking at what hit her. "A Pokemon?" She questioned, setting Oshawott down and pointing her phone at it.

Woobat, the Bat Pokemon. Suction from its nostrils enables it to stick on cave walls during sleep. It leaves a heart-shaped mark behind.

"What's a Woobat doing out here?" Lucy asked out loud. The Woobat then looked at her.

"Why did you crash into me?" Woobat asked in a sad tone.

"She didn't! You fell onto my Mistress!" Oshawott said angrily, glaring at it.

"No, I was flying when you both appeared out of nowhere!" The Bat Pokemon argued back, starting to get mad. She then started to flap her wings and use Air Cutter.

"Oshawott! Dodge it and use Water Gun!" Lucy shouted. Oshawott avoided the attack and started shooting water from his mouth.

"Owie! You meanies!" Woobat shouted after getting hit by the attack. She then used Confusion, by shooting pink energy beams from her hidden eyes.

"Fear not Mistress! I have the perfect move to use!" Oshawott said confidently. He then took the shell of his chest and it started to glow with dark energy. He then swung it to use Night Slash. The attack broke through the Confusion and hit Woobat knocking her out.

Lucy then threw a pokeball, it shook a few times, and stopped. Lucy then walked over and picked up the pokeball, before looking at Oshawott. "You can use Night Slash?" She asked surprised, not that many could tell from her voice.

"I told you I have darkness within me," Oshawott said, puffing out his chest, after putting the shell back on it. "It has been with me ever since I was brought into this world."

"So you have an egg move," Lucy simplified, causing him to deflate at her putting it so bluntly. She then picked him up and gave him a hug. "Thank you for protecting me," she told him with a tiny smile.

"Of course," the Water Type Pokemon said to her with a beaming smile. "As your loyal servant, I will do anything to protect my Mistress!"

"Right, let's continue to see if we can find another team member," Lucy said, her features returning to normal. The two then continued their search for more team members.

[With Lincoln]

Lincoln was currently carrying Tepig, while explaining why she can't cling to him when he calls her out for battle or when he's cooking.

"I'm sorry Lincoln," Tepig said sadly, looking down.

"As long as you understand," Lincoln told her while petting her head, cheering her up. However they suddenly heard what sounded like a battle. "Do you hear that?" He asked his Pokemon, which she nodded. "Let's go check it out."

They follow the sounds and find one Pokemon being ganged up by a group of 3 other Pokemon. Lincoln pulled out his phone to find out what the Pokemon were.

Raticate the Mouse Pokemon. It whittled its constantly growing fangs by gnawing on hard things. It can chew apart cinder walls.

Herdier the Loyal Dog Pokemon. It loyally follows its trainer's orders. For ages they have helped trainer's raise Pokemon.

"It looks like that Herdier is outnumbered by those Raticates'," Lincoln said, looking on with a frown.

"Should we help?" Tepig asked with a determined expression.

"Yeah, use Ember!" Lincoln shouted.

Tepig then charged towards the group, while firing small flames from her mouth. The attack hit one of the Raticates' and drew the attention of all four Pokemon. The Raticate that got hit turns its attention to the Fire Type Pokemon. It charged towards her, intending to use Bite.

"Dodge it and use Tackle!" Lincoln ordered.

Tepig avoided the Bite and then hit it with a Tackle. "Forget this!" The Raticate said in anger, running away not finding this battle worth it. Both trainer and Pokemon looked to the other Pokemon, seeing the Herdier chase away another Raticate.

"Let me handle this Lincoln!" Tepig said, looking at the last Raticate. "I'll show you my egg move, Superpower!" Tepig then glowed brown, before she charged towards the Mouse Pokemon. She slammed into it, knocking it out. Lincoln then threw a pokeball, it shook a few times, and stopped indicating the Raticate was caught.

"Not what I was expecting to catch," Lincoln said, picking up the pokeball. "Good job Tepig," Lincoln praised, looking at his starter.

"It was nothing," the Fire Pig Pokemon replied in an exhausted voice, before nuzzling his leg. They both looked to the Herdier. It was clear that it was hurt and exhausted. They took a step towards it, only for it to start growling.

"Stay back!" Herdier growled, trying to not fall over from exhaustion and pain.

"Whoa, easy there," Lincoln started with his hands up. He then took off his backpack and pulled out a potion. "I just want to help, if you'll let me."

Herdier looked at him, then the potion, and then into his eyes. He then stopped growling and laid down. "Very well," He said, looking away.

Lincoln smiled and walked over to it. He then started to use the potion, making the Loyal Dog Pokemon feel better.

"There, you'll be better in no time," Lincoln told Herdier with a smile, standing up. "Well we'll be going now," he said, leaving with Tepig.

As Herdier watched him leave, he felt something inside him stir. Something was telling him to go with this child. "Wait!" He shouted, getting the trainer and Pokemon to stop. "I wish to come with you," he said, standing up and walking towards him.

"You actually want to come with me?" Lincoln asked, surprised, with Herdier nodding. "Alright then," said with a smile. He then pulled out another pokeball and tossed it. When it hit Herdier, it didn't even shake, capturing it instantly. "Looks like we got two new teammates," Lincoln said, smiling down at Tepig.

"Yay Lincoln!" Tepig cheered happily. Lincoln then picks her up and they continue their search.

[Later That Evening]

The trio of trainers were back at their camp and finished eating dinner that Lincoln had made. "Thanks for making dinner again Lincoln," Sam said with a grateful smile.

"Yeah, I think you cook better than dad now," Lucy added.

"I'm just glad you both enjoyed it," Lincoln said to both of them embarrassed. "So how did things go with you two?"

"Sigh, I caught a Woobat, but that's it," Lucy started. "I saw a few other Pokemon, but I didn't feel they were right for me."

"I was in a similar situation dude," Sam said to Lucy. "I caught a Galarian Zigzagoon. However, the other Pokemon I came across didn't vibe with me."

"I caught two, but I was feeling the same," Lincoln said, catching the girl's attention. "I ran into a group of Raticates' attacking a Herdier. Tepig and Herdier chased away all but one and I caught her. Then I healed Herdier and he wanted to come with me."

"Way to go dude!" Sam cheered with a smile.

"But you don't seem pleased," Lucy said, noticing her brother's expression.

"Well I only caught the Raticate because she seemed strong," Lincoln said, looking into the campfire. "But should I be thinking like that?" Both girls looked at him worried.

"Lincoln, right now we don't know what is the right thing or right way to be a trainer," Sam said, getting up and sitting beside him. "We're still learning all this. Right now, I don't think it's wrong to want strong Pokemon. We're not normal trainers." She then pulls him into a one arm hug. "We were brought here to stop a disaster that we know nothing about. All we know is that we'll need a strong team with us. All we can do right now is keep on trying and learn as we go."

"She's right," Lucy said, moving to sit on her brother's free side. "We were just given a few instructions and information, we're still learning. Besides, if the Raticate doesn't work out, there are options. You could trade her or just release her back into the wild. So try not to worry so much."

"Thanks, you two, I feel better now," he said to both, while giving them a hug each. This surprised Sam since she wasn't expecting it, but found it as a sweet gesture. "I think I'm going to bed now, good night."

"Good night" both female trainers replied.

"You can go to bed now if you want Lucy," Sam told the goth. "I'll clean things up by myself."

"Are you sure?" Lucy asked, to which Sam nodded. "Alright if you're sure. Good night."

"Night Lucy," Sam replied as she started cleaning up. Once everything was put away and the fire was out, she went into her tent to sleep as well.
