Chapter XVI
Abrumpi
She was standing in front of the exit at the London terminal, impatient to find that person who, through her own foolishness, had led her into certain situations that were, to say the least, uncomfortable. Looking up at the sky illuminated by the few visible stars, she took a deep breath and released all that stress, as the night promised to be long.
Spotting a characteristic short ponytail, she saw that the girl had finally arrived. Behind her, she carried a backpack, perhaps with a change of clothes, since she surely didn't know how long she would be in the city, and she had never told her the time.
Taking small steps forward to meet her girlfriend, Hannah noticed how the girl, upon making eye contact, ran towards her and, almost knocking her over, hugged her saying, "Hannah, I missed you so much." Surprised by the emotion with which the girl had greeted her, she took her time to return the gesture. Once the energy had returned to her body, she wrapped her arms around her in response.
"Did you come after the match?" asked Akko, and she, looking a bit confused, asked, "Why do you say that, Akko?" The girl, returning the smile and grabbing her hand, said, "You're wearing the team's jersey." She, looking down, noticed that under her jacket the Arsenal crest was peeking out.
"Oh no, no, after the match we went to grab some lunch and then headed back home. Just that, with everything that had happened, I didn't see the opportunity to change," she told her as they started heading towards the car, and Akko simply followed her chatting animatedly.
Once they had reached the parking lot and found the car, Hannah realized that the first challenge of the day was served: introducing Akko to her sister. As she saw the young adult leaning on the hood of the Mercedes, a chill ran down her spine. Sarah, for her part, looked up upon hearing voices approaching, first glanced at Akko, and then back at Hannah, who seemed to shrink a little more with each step. Without hesitating for a minute, she asked, "And your boyfriend?" Hearing this, Hannah jumped slightly, and looking back at Akko, she replied, "Sarah, I want to introduce you to my girlfriend, Atsuko."
As those words left her mouth, she saw her sister's eyes widen to such an extent that she could swear they were almost popping out. "Wait a second, girlfriend? Are you a lesbian?" And there, the bomb had dropped. The truth was that she had never mentioned to any of her family members that Akko was a girl and, although she perfectly knew it was a totally foolish move on her part, Hannah had a hunch that nothing bad would happen, or so she hoped.
"I-I d-don't kn-know..." Her sister tried to say something coherent, but nothing could come out of her mouth. Hannah, turning to look at Akko, saw how she was starting to come closer to her and taking her hand, squeezed it tightly, as if seeking refuge.
"Sarah?" she asked, trying to snap her sister out of her stupor. The older sister, noticing how Atsuko was hiding behind Hannah, simply took a deep breath and looking at the Japanese girl in the eyes said, "Nice to meet you."
"L-likewise," the small girl replied.
Deciding it was a good time to head home, Hannah moved to the passenger seat of the car. Akko, for her part, sat in the back, and Sarah, being the driver, took the driver's seat. During the journey, although the atmosphere initially generated was really disastrous, she saw how her sister began to try small approaches with the Japanese girl, and as the ice was broken, everything started to fall into place. Sarah's typical jokes and sarcastic comments only managed to bring out a smile from the Japanese girl, something that greatly relieved Hannah.
Just as they approached their home, Hannah felt small butterflies starting in her stomach, for although things had gone well with her sister, she had no idea what would happen with her parents. Parking the car and getting out first, Sarah hurried ahead into the house. Meanwhile, Akko and Hannah did not move from their seats. The Japanese girl, being the second to exit, waited for Hannah to get out of the car. When the Englishwoman finally gathered her courage, she opened her door and, just as she touched the pavement with both feet, fixed her gaze on the chestnut-haired girl.
Within that look were many things, among them several questions that would surely be asked in a few minutes, and many more emotions that she could not decipher at the moment.
Walking side by side, a bit of noise could be heard coming from inside the home. Holding hands one last time, they gave each other mutual support and entered the place. Hannah, knowing where her parents were, walked straight to the kitchen. Upon entering, she saw her father eating a sandwich while her mother was preparing something for Emma, who was right at the island drawing something in a notebook.
When the two adults laid their eyes on the girls, her nerves tripled and she felt a knot in her throat that she had never experienced in her life. "Oh, Hannah, you're back. Where is that boy who has you so smitten?" said her mother, who only glanced at her from the corner of her eye, as she was facing away. Her father, on the other hand, looked between her and Akko and seemed to be understanding things quite quickly.
"Hello, mom, hello, dad," was all she could manage to say as she fiddled with her hands.
"Who is she?" asked the little girl who had looked up from her drawing and noticed Akko next to Hannah.
"Ummm, she's Atsuko, my girlfriend," Hannah's response came out as a whisper but clear enough for everyone present to hear.
"Girlfriend?" came from Emma, a bit confused.
"Cough, cough," her father choked on his sandwich, while her mother remained still, saying nothing in return. Suddenly, from nowhere, a head peeked out from the hallway through which they had entered and the voice of a boy was heard, "Mom, where did you leave my orange shirt? I need it for tomorrow."
Noticing the two new presences in the house, the boy simply looked at Hannah and greeted her, "Hey, Han," and turning to look at Akko, it immediately clicked in his head: "Oh, so it wasn't a guy, but a girl. Cool." Hannah, feeling trapped within those four walls, breathed a little easier with Oliver's comment. "And what's your girlfriend's name?" Hannah, still trying to settle in a bit, replied, "Atsuko."
"Nice name," he responded, while Akko spoke up for the first time, thanking him, "Thank you."
"So, mom, do you know where it is?" the young man asked again, already having shifted his focus away from his sister and Akko. However, the mother, not paying the slightest attention to her only son, looked straight at Hannah and Akko and with a clear and firm tone said the following,
"We need to talk."
