Chapter 5

Lucas and Delia returned to Pallet Town with their bounty in tow. He found a renewed sense of motivation as he gave himself a goal to strive towards. As he strolled along, his mind dwelled on the tasks at hand for building a strong team and obtaining a Pokemon Breeder's license. It wouldn't be easy in such a short amount of time. If he didn't have the system, he didn't think it would be possible.

Delia led him to a shop where she typically sold her Oran berries. After splitting them with Delia, Lucas had over seventeen hundred berries. He chose to keep a few hundred of them for other purposes. With the sale of the berries, he earned fifteen hundred Pokedollars.

Lucas stepped outside and glanced at his watch. The hands on the watch indicated that it was three o'clock in the afternoon. Delia graciously gave him her late husband's watch, as she said it was no use to anyone collecting dust.

"I've got some errands to run in town," Lucas said. "I appreciate the invitation. The Pokedollars will be a great help as I begin working towards my goal."

"Are you still thinking about your crazy idea to give Ash a Pokemon Egg?" Delia asked. "You do not need to push yourself for my son's sake."

"It's not just about him," Lucas denied. "I am in need of something to strive towards, as it will serve as a source of motivation for me. In the long run, it is going to benefit me the most."

"Okay, that's fine. Please, refrain from mentioning this to Ash until you have absolute certainty that you can accomplish it," Delia said, her voice laced with worry. "I don't want him to be disappointed."

"I promise."

Delia was on the verge of leaving when she suddenly seemed to recall something. "Oh, I nearly forgot. Professor Oak is seeking an employee to help care for the Pokemon at his lab. It may not be glamorous, but it could provide valuable insights into Pokemon breeding."

"That would be awesome," Lucas exclaimed. "Put in a good word for me."

"I will," Delia said. "I'll take your bag home so you don't have to carry it around."

Lucas retrieved a folded piece of paper from a side pocket and handed his bag to her. Delia then departed with her Pokemon by her side. He began moving in the opposite direction to his first destination.

The first task was to generate some revenue quickly. If he was going to build up a small team and get his Pokemon Breeder career started, he needed a lot of Pokedollars. He planned to use the funds he had prior to today to buy a cellphone and cover his living expenses. The Pokedollars he earned today would serve as the initial funds to support his ambitions.

The paper he held was a flyer that he had created to promote his Pokemon portrait business. His strategy involved focusing on middle and upper-class residents, as they were more inclined to pay premium prices for his portraits.

First, he went to a second-hand electronics store and purchased a cellphone for three thousand Pokedollars. Although it may seem expensive, this was actually a common price in a world that lacked a robust manufacturing industry. He needed a cellphone for his customers to reach him, but he had no intention of sharing Delia's phone number.

Lucas found a printing shop in town and added his number to the flyer before he made a hundred copies. With a stack of flyers in his hand, he began distributing them to businesses throughout town. Although some stores objected to him affixing flyers to their windows, the majority were unperturbed. By the time he only had a few flyers left, he was exhausted from all the walking.

Before heading home, there was one final stop to make at the Adventurer's Guild. The building was located on a street that served as a connection between the lower-class neighbourhood at the base of the hill and the middle-class neighbourhood above it.

As Lucas approached the guild, he looked around curiously. He hadn't given much thought to the street as he left town earlier. This street housed several essential services such as the Adventurer's Guild, Pokemon Centre, Pokemart, the Police Station, and the Church of Arceus.

The latter caught his attention as it bore a resemblance to the chapel in his hometown. A quaint structure made of white brick, featuring a slanted roof and a tall chimney. The theme was the biggest factor that set the two churches apart. The church worshipped the Legendary Pokemon, showcasing Arceus and his offspring through a number of sculptures, decorations, furnishings, artwork, and window murals.

Lucas was interested in checking out the interior of the building, but it'll have to wait. Besides, he wasn't feeling particularly charitable with the Legendary Pokémon, since Palkia killed him. Sure, Arceus compensated him generously, but it didn't change the fact that he was forcefully taken from his own world.

The Adventurers Guild resided in a sizable, utilitarian square building that prioritised functionality over aesthetics. A flight of stairs ascended towards a pair of doors, flanked by statues on both sides. They were statues of Arceus and the three legendary birds from the Kanto region: Moltres, Articuno, and Zapdos. If there was one place that revered the Legendaries as deeply as the Church of Arceus, it would undoubtedly be the guild. There were rumours circulating about its connections to the higher levels of the church, but Lucas wasn't certain about their authenticity.

The Adventurer's Guild was established in the aftermath of the war and coincided with the emergence of Arceus' decrees. Initially, it functioned as a hub for various resurgent crafting professions. Customers would submit their requests on the board and a skilled craftsman would then fulfil it for them. As time passed, the organisation expanded even further. Its purpose changed over time as the crafters gained their feet and left the guild to start their own businesses. It became the Adventurers Guild, which provided a platform for those seeking adventure and a stable way to earn an income by completing missions. The missions were diverse and included tasks like resource gathering, security detail, capturing specific Pokemon, and tutoring.

Lucas climbed the steps and entered the bustling Adventurer's Guild, which was teeming with people even at that hour. It was not difficult to determine the reason. The guild's role extended beyond task allocation, functioning as a gathering place for adventurers to socialise and share news.

To his left, there was the mission board and reception area, while on his right, there was a bar and canteen, which offered a variety of food and beverages. There were over twelve occupied tables, spread throughout the space. If you climbed the stairs to the second floor, you would find affordable beds for rent. Although lacking privacy due to the shared room setup, it provided a secure place to sleep.

Lucas walked up to the mission board. Although Pallet Town was a small town, the board itself was huge. The mission slips posted on the board were divided into various categories based on the ranking and the type of mission. It was easier for adventurers to find missions that aligned with their abilities and interests.

His guild card displayed his rank as Initiate 1—the lowest level within the guild. In order to advance to the next level, he had to undertake missions to accumulate points. After successfully accomplishing a mission, his card would be promptly updated. The previous host had already completed seven missions, putting him on the cusp of reaching Initiate 2. As he continued to ascend the ranks, he would have the opportunity to tackle increasingly difficult missions. Although this came with a greater level of risk, the potential rewards were a lot better as well.

Lucas located the section containing the listings for Initiate missions. As he perused the posted missions, it became apparent that they all involved gathering plants and berries. Since he will be returning to the town tomorrow to gain more experience, it would be beneficial for him to take on a few missions and complete them simultaneously. He desired to select all of them, but adventurers were restricted to choosing only three at a time.

Among them, he chose three that seemed the easiest.

Gathering Mission

Rank: Initiate

Objective: Gather 24 Wicked Fluxroot in the fields located north of Pallet Town. These plants are quite sharp and mildly toxic, so remember to wear protective gloves while gathering them. They may be guarded by Sentret, as the Pokemon is attracted to its scent. They can be found more easily towards the outskirts of the forest to the east of the highway.

Special Notes: Must be delivered to the guild within eight hours of harvesting them. They have a short lifespan once they are unearthed.

Time Limit: Must be completed within three days of selecting the mission.

Reward: 10 Guild Points; 72 Pokedollars.

The other missions also required harvesting plants from the fields located north of Pallet Town. If he was lucky, he would complete all three missions tomorrow.

Lucas approached the counter where a female attendant was waiting to serve the adventurers. He handed her the mission slips.

"Good day, sir. Are these the missions you would like to undertake?"

"That's right."

"Very good. May I see your guild card?"

Lucas handed his card to the attendant. She proceeded to type the mission details into a computer.

"All right. All three missions have a three-day deadline, along with the specific requirements outlined. If the mission is not completed on time, you will lose double the amount of points they are worth. You will receive payment once the ingredients have been examined and determined to be acceptable. Is there anything else you need?"

"That's all, thanks," Lucas took his card and the slips back and pocketed them. As he made his way towards the exit, a voice called out from behind him.

"Lucas, you bastard."

Lucas's brows furrowed as three men, around his age, approached him, their faces etched with harsh expressions. Did he know these people?

The man standing in front was enormous, not only in terms of height but also in terms of body size. His face was so plump that his eyes were playing hide and seek in a number of chubby rolls. The other two were so thin, it's like the chunky guy ate all their food. None of the three disreputable fellows looked familiar to him.

"Can I help you?" Lucas asked.

"Don't pretend you don't recognise us," the fat guy said. He stepped forward, towering over him. "How could you possibly forget your friends?"

Lucas had a hunch about the identity of these individuals. Based on their behaviour, they were the ones who harassed him when he refused to join the gang.

"I see. Do you call all your friends bastards?"

"Of course," the fat guy chuckled. "Isn't everyone in the orphanage a bastard?"

"Well, sorry I don't recognise you," Lucas said. "But I was involved in an accident and I hit my head, causing my memory to be extremely hazy at the moment."

"Is that right? My name is Chadwick." He gestured to the other two. "These two guys are Eddie and Marcus. We are all friends, aren't we guys?"

The other two nodded but didn't say anything.

Chadwick placed an arm around Lucas' shoulder. "As your friend, I am afraid I have to bring up some unpleasant matters. You still owe me ten thousand Pokedollars you borrowed from me a few months back."

Lucas shrugged his arm away."Do I look that stupid? While my recollections may be somewhat fuzzy, I have kept a diary. It depicts a completely different picture of our interactions in the past."

Chadwick's smile vanished. "Listen, I strongly advise against messing with me. I am already a respected member of the Fearow Gang."

"Fearow Gang? Is your leader a Fearow? Well, at least you have something intelligent leading it."

Chadwick retrieved a switchblade from his pocket and released the blade. "You surely wouldn't want to provoke me or I might just carve out some scars into your cheeks. That would definitely put a smile on your face."

Lucas stepped back from Chadwick, hoping to avoid a fight. He knew very well that facing three opponents alone gave him little chance of success.

"Chadwick, that's enough," a voice said.

Chadwick grimaced as he swiftly concealed the switchblade in his pocket before turning around. "Guild Leader, how's it going?"

The guild leader stood even taller than Chadwick, boasting an impressive muscular frame. Clad in a stylish grey suit and tie, his commanding presence was further accentuated by a wicked scar that sliced down the side of his face, lending him an aura of undeniable fierceness. Not somebody you wanted to mess with. "There is no fighting in the Adventurer's Guild."

"Understood, boss," Chadwick said with a fake smile.

"Get out of here."

The trio of gang members made their way towards the exit. As they passed by Lucas, Chadwick discreetly whispered something to him. "This is not over, Lucas. Watch your back."

Lucas had a sinking feeling that the trio would become a source of trouble for him soon enough. When he returned to the Ketchum house, he had to make sure he wasn't followed. The last thing he wished for was trouble knocking on Delia's doorstep.

"What's your guild rank, kid?"

Lucas turned back to the guild leader. That was a strange question. Wasn't a person supposed to ask a person's name first? "I am an Initiate."

"Waste of my time," he grumbled, as he walked away.

Well sorry. I didn't ask you to save me, asshole.

Lucas lingered outside the building for a few extra minutes, scanning his surroundings. Chadwick and his two friends were nowhere in sight, but that didn't necessarily mean they weren't lurking nearby. Lucas reached into his pocket and retrieved Icarus' Pokeball, and summoned his companion.

Icarus landed on his shoulder and let out a chirp. He scanned his surroundings as if searching for trouble. Pokemon were fully aware of their surroundings even when they were stored inside their Pokeballs, so it was not surprising to them.

"Hey buddy, it looks like you already know what's going on. I need you to keep a lookout, but stay on my shoulder."

Icarus nodded, and he made his way back up the street towards Delia's neighbourhood. Lucas had a feeling of being watched, but since Icarus didn't alert him, it must have been his imagination.

He already had enough on his plate, and now he had to deal with some gang members.

Lucas was out the door before dawn the following morning. It was still dark outside, with a hint of light emerging in the eastern sky. He carried a backpack and wore gloves to assist with harvesting the plants.

He aimed to begin as early as possible to decrease the likelihood of encountering Chadwick and his gang. His goal was to finish the guild missions and gain additional experience. Ideally, he would train in the morning, but the encounter with Chadwick forced him to change his plans slightly. He didn't think the guy would get up this early.

When he reached the town entrance, he summoned Icarus. He flew beside Lucas as they followed the trail off the main road. The morning was brisk, filling his lungs with cold, fresh air. He could hear the hum of machines and a chorus of farm animals coming from the nearby farms. Clearly, he wasn't the only one awake at this early hour.

The farms supplied the town with all of its meat and dairy products, while also exporting the surplus to other towns and cities in Kanto. Thanks to the presence of farm animals in this world, he was able to indulge in delicious bacon and eggs. Animals once coexisted with Pokemon, but the majority of them became extinct since they couldn't compete with them. Only the critical species that fulfilled essential needs were preserved.

The exact origins of the first Pokemon are unknown, as they predate recorded history. However, historians have theorised that Pokemon were fashioned after animals, with the sole distinction of possessing unique powers. There is even speculation that these creatures evolved from animals, once they gained the ability to tap into the energy of the world. This last theory was heavily disputed by the church, who believed that Arceus was the origin of all Pokemon.

As soon as Lucas stepped off the trail and onto the grass, he became more alert. Without Delia by his side to bail him out if anything went awry, he knew he had to exercise extra caution. As he walked, he scanned his surroundings, searching for the three requisite plants that would help him accomplish his mission. Knowing that the Wicked Fluxroot grew near the outskirts of the forest, he set a direct course eastward.

At this time of the morning, he anticipated encountering Sentret in the fields, as they tended to be more active before dawn. It didn't take long for him to spot his first Sentret, which was gracefully perched on its tail, peeking out from a bush. Thankfully, it was alone.

He scanned it with Insight.

As soon as Sentret caught sight of him, it let out a resounding cry. Lucas, feeling uneasy, quickly decided against confronting the Pokemon and instead chose to turn around and flee. Looking behind him, he could confirm that his decision was correct. A few additional Sentrets emerged from the grass, fixing their small, bead-like eyes on him. Thankfully, they made no attempt to chase after him.

Lucas had to circle around the area to avoid the Sentrets. No wonder they were called the Scout Pokemon. They possess an extraordinary ability to see predators from great distances.

The next Sentret he encountered did not alert any others, indicating that it was alone. It was at level four, just like the previous one he had encountered.

Icarus flew in front of Lucas, releasing a clacking sound from his beak to show his aggression. He was ready for a fight.

Sentret quickly dashed forward on all fours, specifically targeting Lucas, and completely disregarding Icarus.

"Quick Attack," Lucas called urgently as he retreated.

Icarus flew down sharply, targeting an area just ahead of the Sentret. Lucas would face serious consequences if Icarus failed to hit his mark. The Sentret would pounce on him before Icarus had a chance to recover.

Icarus' aim was perfect, crashing into Sentret from above. The Pokemon cried out before falling face-first to the ground, while Icarus regained control of his flight and ascended back into the air.

Lucas observed the damage Sentret took. His condition ticked down from Perfect to Excellent.

"Gust," Lucas called, having recovered from his surprise. His heart received quite a workout when the Sentret charged towards him. He was still not accustomed to Pokemon attacking him. To be fair, the last two occasions he was attacked were traumatic, especially considering that one of the attacks was fatal.

Icarus unleashed Gust, and a swirling gust of wind appeared beneath the feet of the Sentret. Just as the wind was about to trap Sentret in its vortex, it leapt up and propelled itself forward by using its tail as a springboard.

"Quick Attack!" Lucas shouted.

The Sentret used its momentum to smoothly transition into a Quick Attack, targeting Lucas once again. At the last moment, Lucas quickly dove to the side, narrowly escaping being hit and crashing onto the ground. Fortunately, the Sentret wasn't competent in using Quick Attack, as it could only use it to attack in a straight line.

"Sentret!"

Icarus swiftly executed another Quick Attack, delivering another strike to Sentret.

Lucas rose to his feet at the same time as Sentret. Its condition had deteriorated even more. Icarus was winning the fight, but he wished the Sentret wouldn't target him so fervently.

What was the issue? Did I unknowingly exterminate her ancestral lineage or some comparable atrocity? For the rest of the fight, he was going to refer to the Sentret as Scumbag, for being completely unreasonable.

Scumbag made a beeline for Lucas, completely disregarding Icarus once more. This prompted Icarus to take matters into his own hands and launch another Quick Attack at his adversary. It was the only move he had in his arsenal that could stop Scumbag before he reached Lucas.

Scumbag was sent flying even further this time, as her condition deteriorated a further two levels. It appeared as if Icarus scored a critical hit.

"Use Gust," Lucas called. "Finish it off."

Scumbag dragged itself upright, only to be too sluggish to evade the next attack. Once again, it was knocked over, this time without any chance of being able to stand up again. The text above Scumbag's head showed that it had fainted.

"Good battle, Icarus."

Icarus shook its head in denial, before swooping down and resting on Lucas' shoulder. He could understand Icarus' point of view. The fight was too easy for him, as the Sentret didn't attack him once. It was fixated on Lucas.

He didn't know what was wrong with the wild Pokemon. Was it just stupid? On the other hand, taking out the trainer may have been the best tactic as it didn't know if Lucas had more Pokemon on hand. It would be easier to kill the trainer than fight a bunch of Pokemon.

Lucas couldn't help but shake his head. Why bother questioning the Sentret's intelligence? It's much more fun to dub it a Scumbag and simplify everything.

He opened his menu to check Icarus' stats. Since the Pokemon could earn them by battling, he wanted to keep track of their progress. He was pleased to see that Icarus had earned two stats; one in Attack and one in Luck. His theory turned out to be correct - critical hits have the ability to increase Luck. It wasn't the best way to train stats, however, as Icarus could only fight so many battles before they would have to return to town.

Lucas closed the menu and kept walking. Just five minutes later, he came across another Sentret. When the Pokemon charged towards him once more, completely disregarding Icarus, he found himself amending his earlier statement.

The entire species were a bunch of scumbags, not just one measly individual. Icarus defeated the Sentret without trouble, and they earned some more experience points.

Lucas continued walking for another ten minutes before he spotted a fallen tree up ahead. As he got closer, his eyes were attracted to some brown mushrooms clinging to the surface. Toxic Brown Mushrooms. One of the ingredients he needed to complete his task. Taking a look around to ensure there were no Pokemon around, he took out a pair of gloves and a knife from his pack.

The mushrooms were another poisonous ingredient that required his careful attention. Now that he thought about it, there were many local plants with poisonous properties. They were used in Alchemy to make antidotes and poisons. The latter was useful in a pinch if you didn't have Pokemon to protect you. He was interested in the Alchemy profession not only for earning Pokedollars, but also to create poisons.

He cut the bark around the mushroom. It was embedded deeply in the trunk. He had to be careful not to break the stem, as it was the most vital part of the plant. It wouldn't count if he brought it back to the guild with a broken stem. After harvesting the fifteen mushrooms needed to complete the mission, he stored them back in his pack.

"Let's keep going," Lucas told Icarus. He was pleased to have successfully completed one of the missions within a remarkably short timeframe. Hopefully, the remaining missions would be just as straightforward.

Lucac continued walking across the field towards the forest. Now that the sun was out, plenty more Rattatas were appearing. Lucas encountered a group of three, but Icarus defeated them easily. He had defeated two more groups of Rattata when he received a pleasant surprise.

His Pokemon Trainer Profession levelled up. He gained an additional skill called Bountiful Gains. After retrieving his guidebook, he checked to see if there was any information regarding the skill's capabilities.

Skill: Bountiful Gains Level 1/3 Next: 5 SP Type: Passive Charges: -

Description: This skill enables the player to acquire greater rewards upon defeating wild Pokemon. At the initial level, the player receives 1 Pokedollar per level for every wild Pokemon defeated.

This is incredible.

From what he understood, he would gain a specific number of Pokedollars, depending on the Pokemon's level. For example, the Rattata he just defeated were all level three. He would receive three Pokedollars for each Pokemon, for a total of nine Pokedollars. It may seem like a pittance now, but when he defeated higher-level Pokemon, it would start to add up quickly.

The only limiting factor was that he only had one Pokemon. Icarus' energy levels were finite, so he couldn't grind for experience and Pokedollars continuously. He could use the Pokemon Centre's service once per day for free but had to pay Pokedollars for additional healing. Perhaps he should invest in a few Potions. The only issue is they were expensive.

It is not prudent to push your Pokemon too hard anyway. Despite their ability to have their energy restored multiple times, they still experience mental fatigue. If a trainer is not careful, their Pokemon could become seriously ill.

Lucas spent all of his experience points and levelled twice to reach level five. He was surprised again when something new appeared on his menu at the bottom.

Lucas wasted no time consulting his guidebook again. A few new details have emerged due to the introduction of the new function.

He would gain special rewards every five levels, but it was also a threshold, and the level of experience he needed increased substantially. He shouldn't be surprised that the easy levels didn't last forever.

As for the inventory, it was a great asset. He could summon a menu that allowed him to store any item, regardless of size, in one of its slots. He initially had access to thirty slots, but he could increase this number by spending Pokedollars. The items within the inventory were perfectly preserved. That means he could complete more missions by collecting ingredients beforehand and handing them in immediately. The other clear advantage is that his belongings would be safeguarded. Only he would have access to his inventory, allowing him to store his most valuable items securely.

Lucas stored his wallet, mushrooms and Pokeball inside his inventory. It was an unfortunate reality that Pokeballs could be stolen, even if the Pokemon inside didn't cooperate with the person who stole it. Not having to worry about Icarus being stolen was a huge weight off his shoulders. He noticed that the mushrooms in his inventory were stacked, only taking up one slot. So, he harvested the rest of the mushrooms from the tree trunk before moving on.

Lucas continued exploring the field, gathering resources and battling wild Pokemon. He began to encounter Pidgeys in the field. After some initial difficulty in battling another flying-type Pokemon, fighting against Pidgeys became manageable. Their highest level was only five. Lucas kept an eye on Icarus' condition as they battled. It was steadily decreasing, so he couldn't stay outside for too long. He had to get back to the main road before Icarus ran out of steam.

After engaging in several more battles, Icarus managed to earn additional Attack and Speed stats, achieving the maximum stat gains for level six. Lucas was able to level up Icarus to seven, utilising all of the stored experience in his cache. Icarus' condition recovered slightly, as his energy reserves increased upon levelling up.

He earned some Pokedollars as well. They were immediately added to his inventory, which was a nice touch. The amount he earned in every battle might not seem like much, but it added up after participating in so many battles. It was enough that he considered advancing his plans to obtain another Pokemon. If his portrait business plans pan out, he may have a considerable amount of Pokedollars soon.

Lucas found the plants for one of the two remaining missions, the Serpent Weed, along with another dozen or so ingredients. He still needed the Wicked Fluxroot, but he wasn't going to try his luck any further. He had to return to town in order to restore Icarus' energy levels.

He retraced his steps back to the highway. There was a carriage passing by being driven by a merchant, which was being pulled by a massive Rhyhorn. The man offered him a ride, and Lucas climbed onto the seat beside him. As they approached the town, Lucas saw Chadwick and the two men walking on the trail next to the road. Besides Chadwick, there was a Mankey that came up to the man's waist.

Species: Mankey

Level: 15

Condition: Excellent

Threat Level: High

Chadwick shot him a glare. Had the three of them been planning to ambush him? It was quite a coincidence that they happened to meet here, considering the man had threatened Lucas just last night. Thankfully, Lucas encountered the merchant, otherwise, he would have found himself in a dire predicament.

The Mankey by itself was troublesome. Sure, Icarus had the advantage of being a Flying-Type, but the level difference was too much. Furthermore, Lucas didn't know if Chadwick had other Pokemon. Icarus could hardly protect Lucas from multiple opponents.

As they entered the town, Lucas thanked the merchant and got down from the carriage. The presence of the three gang members diminished his mood, even though he had gained a lot. It was unlikely that he could leave town again today.

Lucas headed straight for the Pokemon Centre, a sense of urgency driving him. With people like Chadwick around, he understood the importance of becoming stronger so he did not become just another victim.

So what do you think? Next chapter, Lucas encounters the gang again, and this time it's much more explosive.

Thanks for reading.
