Hi all,

Here's the next chapter. The battle with Zero doesn't go as expected, and Vulpix finally makes her appearance.

Chapter 32

The crowd had regained its voice and was now firmly behind Lucas, cheering him on. They also appeared to dislike Zero, who struck them as creepy.

Meowth whispered into his ear. "Should we proceed with our plan?"

"Now is as good a time as any."

Lucas had encountered problems in his matches because the majority of his opponents could communicate through their bond, putting him at a significant disadvantage. Some of his losses were due to opposing trainers and their Pokemon responding quickly to the commands he issued to his team. He devised a temporary solution to the problem, which should suffice until his bond with his Pokemon grows strong enough to allow him to communicate with them telepathically. But he hadn't tested it out in a real match yet.

Icarus was summoned to the stage, where he clacked his beak at his opponent before soaring into the air.

"Mienfoo."

Lucas was taken aback as the Pokemon charged directly at him, leaping into the air and delivering a powerful flying kick. However, just as the attack was about to connect, a barrier materialised in front of Lucas, deflecting it. The audience gasped at the audacity of the Pokemon and booed Zero, who seemed amused by Mienfoo's boldness.

Lucas looked to the referee, shaken by the unexpected assault. "Are you going to allow him to attack me like that?"

The referee shot Zero a disapproving look. "If you attempt that again, you will forfeit the match and be ejected from the arena."

Zero bowed. "I apologise. My Mienfoo seems a bit overeager."

Icarus, witnessing the attack but unable to react in time, flew down in a fit of rage.

The referee swiftly raised his flag. "The match has officially begun."

[The match between Icarus and Mienfoo has commenced.]

Lucas whispered a command to Meowth, who then relayed it to Icarus.

This approach was his solution to the communication challenge during matches. Meowth served as the intermediary, ensuring the opposing trainer couldn't hear Lucas' commands during battle. Only the opposing Pokemon could grasp the commands, but Lucas and his team had devised alternatives to the move's names, which would confuse it. While not flawless, it sufficed for the moment.

Icarus, consumed by anger, disregarded Meowth's command, leading to a critical error that granted Mienfoo the upper hand.

[Mienfoo used Fakeout.]

Mienfoo clapped his hands together, unleashing a sound wave that distorted the air, hurtling towards Icarus and striking him on the head.

[Icarus flinched.]

"Watch out, Icarus!" Lucas shouted.

Icarus plummeted from the air and landed on the stage. Mienfoo drew back his hand and delivered a hard slap to Icarus' head, sending him into a deeper rage.

[Mienfoo used Pound]

[Icarus' condition has dropped to Excellent (5/6)]

Lucas had allowed Zero to take the initiative by interfering with Icarus' state of mind before the battle even began. He needed to regain control of the fight before Mienfoo defeated Icarus without even putting up a fight.

Meowth acted quickly and shouted something at Icarus, which appeared to calm him down.

Lucas nodded in approval and continued to relay orders to Icarus through Meowth.

[Icarus used Double Team]

Icarus' form blurred, and more than a dozen copies of himself emerged, forming a circle around Mienfoo. Initially confused, Mienfoo couldn't distinguish the real Icarus among the copies. However, the confusion faded quickly as it moved towards the real Icarus.

Icarus took off before Mienfoo could reach him, and the rest of the illusions vanished. Mienfoo's trainer had helped him see through the illusion, but his hesitation allowed Icarus to recover.

[Icarus used Work Up]

Icarus' body was enveloped in a layer of normal-type energy.

[Icarus' Attack and Special Attack have increased by one stage.]

Meowth gave another instruction, emphasising it by waving his paws around. By this point, the audience had realised what was happening and began cheering for Meowth. They had never seen anything like it before where a Pokemon assisted its trainer in commanding a battle.

[Icarus used Air Cutter.]

Icarus snapped his wings, sending several blades of wind at his opponent.

[Mienfoo used Detect.]

Instead of dodging, a bright flash appeared above Mienfoo's head, and the Air Cutter vanished into thin air. This move neutralised any attack directed at it, but it was risky because it failed fifty percent of the time when used consecutively. If it failed, the user took one and a half times the damage from the opponent's attack.

Lucas grimaced and relayed another order.

[Icarus used Work Up.]

[Icarus' Attack and Special Attack have increased to stage two.]

Work Up could be stacked multiple times to boost the Pokemon's stats, but the effect was short-lived. Therefore, one had to act quickly before it disappeared.

Since Icarus was airborne, it appeared that he could use Work Up without encountering any opposition, but Mienfoo made a move that altered the complexity of the fight. This was the move Lucas was most concerned about, as it would negate Icarus' aerial advantage.

[Mienfoo used Acrobatics.]

Mienfoo leapt into the air, reaching Icarus's height and hovering midair, defying gravity.

Acrobatics was a flying-type move that allowed a non-flying Pokémon to move through the air as if it were on the ground. It wasn't an attack, but rather a movement technique. The user's speed was reduced, but with practice, the flaw could be virtually eliminated. Another disadvantage was that it required a lot of energy to operate, so its condition deteriorated while in use.

The battle has entered a new phase. Mienfoo proved to be surprisingly adept in the air, prompting it to engage in free-form combat to overcome its opponent. The audience was captivated by the spectacle of its acrobatic prowess in mid-air. Its free-form fighting style outmatched Max's, and with successful attacks, it would inflict significant damage. Since these attacks were not categorised as energy-based, they did not face any type disadvantages.

Despite his aerial advantage, Icarus had to work hard to avoid the attacks. He was so preoccupied with evading that he missed the opportunity to capitalise on the stat increases, causing them to vanish. However, Lucas remained unfazed because, as long as the situation persisted, it would favour Icarus. Icarus possessed significantly more endurance than his opponent due to his superior conditioning trait.

[Mienfoos' condition has fallen to Excellent (5/6).]

…..

[Mienfoos' condition has fallen to Depleted (2/6).]

Mienfoo's condition continued to deteriorate as he expended a great deal of energy. Lucas glanced at Zero, who appeared unfazed by the situation. It appeared that the outcome of the fight had no significance for him.

Lucas ordered another attack. He had an idea of what Zero was aiming for, even if he wasn't sure if it was feasible. It seemed like an all-or-nothing strategy had little chance of working, but if he managed to pull it off, it would be devastating to Icarus. Therefore, he wanted to get ahead of it.

Icarus dodged to the side as Mienfoo unleashed another kick, but instead of retreating, he rammed into Mienfoo, catching the Pokemon off guard. Up to this point, Icarus had always chosen to retreat.

[Icarus used Double Team.]

Icarus repeated his previous move, but he didn't allow his opponent to see the real him before unleashing a follow-up attack.

[Icarus used Air Cutter]

The blade of wind cut through the air, appearing as though it were going to bisect Mienfoo in two.

[Mienfoo used Quick Guard.]

A shield appeared in front of Mienfoo, deflecting the attack. Mienfoo flew at Icarus with such speed that Lucas and Icarus were taken off guard. Had it always concealed its ability to accelerate explosively?

[Mienfoo used Reversal]

Mienfoo drew back its arm, its fist surrounded by a glowing orb of energy, and delivered a powerful punch. The power of the move increased as the user's condition deteriorated, so it would cause significant damage in its current state, despite its type disadvantage.

But Lucas was expecting it, and Meowth had already given his order. Icarus easily avoided the attack, while Mienfoo struck nothing but empty air. When Icarus was about to retaliate, Mienfoo did something surprising.

[Mienfoo used Baton Pass]

Mienfoo vanished, and another Pokemon appeared right where he had been. Before Icarus could respond, his opponent launched an attack.

[Emolga used Spark]

Emolga's body was engulfed in electric energy, which burst forth as a massive arc of lightning, striking Icarus square in the chest.

[Icarus' condition has fallen to Fair (3/6)]

[Icarus has been paralysed.]

Lucas watched helplessly as Icarus plummeted from the sky. Despite having a trait that reduced his chances of becoming paralysed, he was unlucky enough to still suffer the status effect.

Icarus hit the stage hard and twitched uncontrollably. The rest of the fight was straightforward, with Emolga using Charge first, followed by another Spark to defeat Icarus.

[Icarus has fainted.]

Lucas sighed. He hadn't been able to react quickly enough to Zero's tactics, despite knowing that Mienfoo had Baton Pass at his disposal. Mienfoo had been eliminated from the fight because, according to the battle arena rules, once a Pokemon switches out, it cannot return to the battle. But Zero now held the initiative.

His eyes widened when Emolga continued to attack Icarus. It was against the rules to continue attacking a Pokemon who had fainted. Because their energy levels were depleted, they had little defence against attacks, which could be fatal if the attack was powerful enough.

"Stop!" Lucas shouted.

The referee demanded the same thing, but Zero ignored it and watched Emolga launch another attack on Icarus. The audience gasped when they saw the shameless attack on a fainted Pokemon.

Fortunately, the Alakazam standing outside and operating the barrier was alert. It created a barrier around Icarus, preventing the attack from reaching him. It used telekinesis to restrain Emolga, who tried to escape but was completely helpless.

The referee raised the flag. "Zero broke the arena rules and thus forfeited the match. The winner is Lucas Walker."

Lucas didn't hear anything else as he rushed forward after the barrier disappeared to check on Icarus. After assuring himself he was fine, he returned him to his pokeball.

"You were amazing, buddy," Lucas told him.

"Have you learned your lesson yet?" Zero asked, appearing in front of him.

Lucas was so incensed that he wanted to take that shiny bald head and smash it repeatedly into the ground. He stood up and shoved Zero backwards.

"You little bastard. Do you think that would scare me?" Lucas asked. "I want to know what you were thinking. You tried to force my hand, but now everyone has seen your despicable actions."

Zero gave no response to his words and bowed his head. "I look forward to our next meeting, my friend. Perhaps we can do so in a more private setting."

Lucas watched him leave with furrowed brows. He expected a reaction from the church after his relationship with Sabrina was revealed, but not this quickly or from someone like this weirdo.

After waving at the audience, he exited the stage and returned to the entrance. He spoke with the attendant, who handed him his prize, a collection of battle enhancer potions to use in battle. It wasn't a bad prize, as the total cost must have been more than ten thousand pokedollars.

He left the arena, still shaken from his encounter with Zero.

Lucas stayed with Sabrina on his last night in Saffron City. Knowing they would not see each other for a while, they spent another sleepless night together, intimately exploring one another. They were having difficulty keeping their hands to themselves now that they had reached a new stage of their relationship.

She walked outside with him the next morning to say her final goodbyes. Brock was already waiting in the carriage that he had hired to take them to the tower. Salem appeared in front of Lucas before he could board the carriage.

"What's he doing here?" Lucas asked.

"Salem will accompany you," Sabrina told him.

"You have nothing to worry about. Salem doesn't need to keep following me around."

Sabrina shook her head. "It's not my decision. Bree decided on her own, but I'm relieved; she will keep an eye on you to ensure you are safe. Don't forget the encounter with Zero."

"Well, okay." Lucas kissed her one last time before entering the carriage. "It will only be for a few weeks before we see each other again. I will call you frequently, but if you ever get the urge to see me, you're only a short teleport away."

"The same goes for you," Sabrina said. Her expression showed her reluctance to let him go. "Take care of yourself."

Lucas waved as the carriage drove down the street.

"Is it hard to separate from her?" Brock asked.

"Dat it is," Meowth sighed. "She sure was generous with her salmon."

"He wasn't talking to you," Lucas said, poking Meowth in the stomach. "She didn't give you anything. You helped yourself to her food without her permission."

"Don't get too caught up in the details," Meowth replied, waving his paw dismissively.

"It's hard," Lucas said in response to Brock's question. "But I will be busy for the next few weeks, and time will pass quickly."

The carriage pulled up to the teleportation tower. It was a tall, narrow structure topped with a special antenna that emitted a specific frequency to assist Pokemon in navigating their teleportation. The tower represented a potential vulnerability for the city, so it was guarded by soldiers even though it was designed for all incoming visitors to teleport to a secure room. Infiltrating a city using this method would be difficult, but not impossible.

Lucas returned Meowth to his pokeball before entering the building. He bought tickets to Viridian City for both himself and Brock. The tickets cost him ten thousand pokedollars, making it not the most cost-effective mode of transportation. He could have used the flying Pokémon service, which was less expensive but slower and less safe. If he had a Pokémon capable of teleportation, the tickets would be less expensive.

They were taken to one of the teleportation rooms and introduced to a Kadabra. Before the two could prepare, it grabbed their arms and used Teleport. This caused them to experience a sensation of weightlessness before they disappeared from the room.

The next moment, his feet landed on the floor in a room similar to the one they had just exited. He felt nauseous and nearly vomited, but he managed to resist the urge.

Brock wasn't as fortunate. He collapsed to his knees, groaning. Kadabra pushed a nearby bucket over, and Brock dumped the contents of his stomach in it.

"Your approach could use some polishing," Lucas smirked.

"I see what you did there," Brock grumbled as he stood up. "You slipped a double entendre into your sentence, didn't you? My approach to the ladies is impeccable."

"Then why are you always striking out?"

Brock ignored the jab. They made their way through security and stepped out onto the bustling streets of Viridian City. Lucas felt a rush of excitement at being back in the city he favoured over Saffron.

"Where to next?" Brock inquired.

"Let's head back to my place to unpack first."

Upon reaching his cramped apartment, Brock commented on the lack of space.

"There is only one room," Lucas agreed. "You can use the couch tonight, but I need to look for a larger place, especially with Sabrina coming to stay in a few weeks."

"Why not consider buying a house?" Brock suggested. "With the profits from your recent potion sales, you could afford it."

Lucas considered his suggestion. True, he had enough money to buy a house in the city. At least in middle-class neighbourhoods. After the arena earnings and the most recent potions he sold, he had a fortune of just under eight hundred thousand pokedollars. Now that he was involving the government in the mines, he wouldn't have to spend any of it on expensive machinery to mine them. So the only significant expense would be levelling his functions.

"I don't see the point, because Viridian City will not be my permanent home," Lucas explained. "But now that I am more well-known to the public and have made enemies with the church, it might be better to rent a place with more security."

"That sounds like a good idea," Brock agreed. "And I wouldn't have to sleep on a couch."

Lucas rolled his eyes. He was about to respond when he felt something against his chest. Looking down, he noticed that the Pokemon egg in the harness had shifted slightly.

"Vulpix seems ready to hatch from its egg soon," Brock observed.

Lucas nodded, a smile playing on his lips. "Yes, the moment is almost upon us."

To be more specific, Vulpix would hatch tomorrow. He had high expectations for his new companion and couldn't wait to see what kind of personality she possessed and what her starting parameters were.

"We'll leave our belongings here and start the search for a new rental," Lucas said.

"I would like something with a large backyard, so our Pokemon can spend more time outside of their pokeballs."

"If such a place is available, it would be ideal," Lucas agreed.

Lucas and Brock visited a real estate office and were presented with several options that offered excellent security for their residents. He eventually chose a middle-class neighbour, which was on the verge of becoming upper-class and was part of a gated community. The rental was a two-story house with a large yard, and it would cost him five thousand pokedollars per week, but he thought the price was reasonable for what it offered. The house even had a separate, reinforced building in the back that could be used for Pokemon training.

They moved in immediately, even though Lucas' previous lease was still in effect. It wasn't that big of a loss. Brock headed out to stock up on some food supplies. As his assistant, he would be taking over the responsibilities of cooking for both them and their Pokemon, which would free Lucas up to concentrate on other things.

Lucas spent the rest of the day training his team's stats. They still had plenty of experience to level up, but he needed to maximise their potential at each level first.

The next morning, Lucas entered the dining room to find Brock serving breakfast to Meowth, with meals already set out for him and his Pokemon team. Upon releasing them from their pokeballs, they eagerly began their morning feast. As Lucas settled at the table, Brock handed him a newspaper, the front page catching his attention instantly.

"What in the world is this?" Lucas muttered under his breath, a mix of disbelief and annoyance evident in his tone.

"It seems like you're becoming quite the celebrity for a different reason," Brock chuckled. "You just can't seem to avoid the limelight."

The headline of the article read, "Innovative Trainer Introduces a Revolutionary Approach for Rookie Trainers," a rather verbose title. As Lucas delved into the content, he realised that the author was a member of his fan club, and had showered him with excessive praise.

His and Meowth's antics in the battle arena appeared to have sparked a lot of interest. Because most rookie trainers lacked a strong enough bond with their Pokemon to communicate telepathically, they were at a disadvantage when issuing commands during battle. After observing how Lucas used Meowth to issue orders during the battle, they discovered a way to keep the opposing trainer from hearing their commands.

He thought that anyone could use the method. To be effective, however, they required an intelligent Pokemon capable of remembering several commands and responding calmly and decisively in battle.

"What a load of drivel," Lucas exclaimed, throwing the newspaper on the table. He became engrossed in his food and stopped thinking about it anymore.

"Look at me, I'm practically a superstar," Meowth remarked, picking up the discarded paper to read. "This article is a load of nonsense! It's all about you and hardly gives me the credit I deserve."

"Need a handkerchief for those tears?" Lucas quipped, and Meowth responded with a rude gesture.

Brock interjected, "So, what's on the agenda for today?"

"I have some business to attend to with the mayor," Lucas replied. "But I'll show you how to start making a healing salve to get you started."

Although Brock had assisted with the growth potion, he hadn't made his own potions yet, so Lucas decided to introduce him to the basics of alchemy.

"You don't have anything else for me to do?"

"Not at the moment," Lucas answered. "You can sell any salves you make as long as you provide the ingredients. I suggest heading south of the city to gather some free ingredients that grow abundantly and quickly."

Brock nodded enthusiastically. "I can do that."

After breakfast, Lucas grabbed his bike and set off for the mayor's office. He kept the Vulpix egg on him because it showed signs of hatching, adding a sense of anticipation to his day.

He arrived at the mayor's office and entered the reception area.

"Welcome. How may I be of service to you today?" the receptionist inquired politely as Lucas approached the front desk.

"I need to speak with the mayor," Lucas stated firmly.

"May I ask if you have an appointment?"

"No, but once she learns of what I have uncovered, she will want to see me."

The secretary's expression turned sceptical. "The mayor's schedule is quite packed. What leads you to believe she would see you without an appointment?"

Leaning casually against the desk, Lucas explained, "I have stumbled upon an unclaimed mine loaded with evolution stones. My initial assessments indicate substantial profits for both me and the city."

The secretary's eyes widened in surprise as she swiftly reached for the phone. After a brief conversation, she informed Lucas, "The mayor will see you immediately. Take the elevator to the top floor; her office is the second door on your right."

Lucas knocked on the mayor's office door and heard a voice beckoning him to enter. Upon stepping into the lavishly adorned office, the opulent gold accents hinted at a penchant for ostentation or perhaps a love for displaying wealth. Seated behind the desk was a young woman with blonde hair, captivating purple eyes, and an air of confidence bordering on arrogance. Lucas couldn't help but be taken aback by her youthful appearance; was this the mayor of Viridian City?

"Well, don't just stand there," the woman urged impatiently. "Have a seat."

Lucas settled into the chair, admitting, "I didn't expect the mayor to be so young."

"That is what happens when you have connections with powerful people," the woman said, winking. "I'm Cassidy. You seem oddly familiar."

"I'm Lucas Walker. It's hard to believe you would know someone like me."

Cassidy snapped her fingers. "Ah, Sabrina's boyfriend. You've certainly made an impression by winning her heart."

Lucas furrowed his brow. Cassidy's demeanour didn't quite align with his expectations of a mayor. Who had the clout to secure her such a pivotal position?

"Don't be so serious," Cassidy interjected, sensing she might have offended him. "If I'd met you first, I might have made a move. You're quite the catch."

"Can we focus on business?" Lucas redirected the conversation.

"You are too impatient," Cassidy sighed. "Okay, I heard from my secretary that you have a lot of pokedollars for me."

"For the both of us," Lucas corrected. "I understand I'll receive half of the profits from the mines."

"After deducting the mining expenses. Have you disclosed the existence of the mines to anyone else?"

The question struck Lucas as somewhat ominous. "Only Sabrina and her uncle, the Prime Minister."

Cassidy nodded and retrieved a stack of papers from her desk drawer. "Let's formalise this. You'll need to guide the workers to the site, but it will take time to arrange the manpower and equipment. Give me your contact information so I can call you when we're ready."

They spent the next thirty minutes going over the details before Lucas got up and left her office, feeling relieved to finally be out of her sight. The woman was too much for him.

Cassidy watched him leave. This was the man who had piqued the boss' interest. Giovanni had a keen sense of people, so Cassidy was certain Lucas had his own secrets. What were the chances that he would find an undiscovered mine? She would need to keep a closer eye on him in the future.

She was tempted to conceal the fact that Lucas discovered the mines from her boss so that she could have some fun with him. But then reason prevailed, and she reached for her phone.

Giovanni answered the call. "What is it?"

"It concerns Lucas Walker," Cassidy began. "He just informed me that he discovered an unclaimed mine. What should I do? Should I resort to unscrupulous means to seize it from him?"

There was a pause before Giovanni responded, "No. My curiosity about him outweighs the potential profits from his share of the mine, especially now that he's involved with Sabrina Kuroi. We may find use for that in the future."

"I understand," Cassidy said. "Have you come across any leads regarding Mr. Ketchum's research?"

"No, unfortunately not. Delia doesn't know anything about her husband's work," Giovanni replied.

Cassidy's mind raced with possibilities. "I could visit her and try to persuade her."

Giovanni's voice turned stern. "That won't be necessary. I insist you steer clear of the Ketchums."

Giovanni hung up and she put down the phone. Could she sense a hint of weakness in her boss towards Mrs Ketchum and her brat?

Turning in her chair, she gazed out the window at the sky. A surge of anticipation coursed through her. The dilemma she faced was whether to obey her boss's orders or seize this opportunity to break free from his control, and Lucas may be the key. The next few weeks were sure to be interesting.

The room was buzzing with energy as his team eagerly awaited the arrival of their newest member. Suddenly, a noise caught Lucas' attention, and he quickly noticed a crack forming in the egg before him. Without hesitation, he called Brock, urging him to bring a camera to capture this momentous occasion.

His loyal Pokemon encircled him as they waited for the egg to hatch. Gradually, the cracks multiplied until the egg exploded in a burst of light, temporarily blinding them. As the light dissipated, a small, enchanting fox-like Pokemon emerged, her single tail swaying in the air.

"Vulpix?" she questioned, tilting her head curiously before bounding into Lucas' arms, her warmth and affection enveloping him. A soft yip escaped her as he stroked her back, feeling an instant connection.

"What are you going to call her?" Brock asked.

"As she is a female Vulpix, I've decided to name her Ashe," Lucas responded with a smile. It was a name he had decided upon weeks ago.

Eager to learn more about his new companion, Lucas used his Insight skill to assess her parameters.

Her parameters were impressive, comparable to Saphira's. Thanks to the bonuses he obtained from raising her from an egg, she was starting strong, and would only grow stronger over time.

"How did you know she was a female?"

Lucas froze at his question. "Just a lucky guess. Ashe didn't contradict me, so it must be right."

"What an idiot," Meowth muttered.
