Hi all,

Here's the next chapter. Lucas experiments with his new alchemical technique and Icarus evolves into a Pidgeot.

Chapter 52

Lucas was going back to the basics and starting with a healing salve. From what he had researched about ancient alchemy, creating a paste was similar to modern alchemy in the ratios between water and ingredients. He would first try one part water to three parts ingredients.

He used his aura to levitate ingredients into the air. With his other hand, he separated a portion of the flame from the bottom of the alchemy pot and held it suspended at the top. He felt the strain. Focusing on two separate tasks proved challenging, and he almost dropped the ingredients. It took him a moment to adjust to using both hands to manipulate his aura.

His aura was wrapped around the flame, similar to how he used his aura barrier, forming a shell that protected him from the worst of the heat. The flame displayed various colours: yellow, orange, red, blue, and purple, signifying its uniqueness. He knew that the Eternal Flame had special attributes that made this crazy idea of creating a new alchemy method even possible, but reaching that step wasn't going to be easy.

With a gesture of his finger, the flame formed into a bowl shape inside the pot, and he pulled back the aura layer at the top so he could add the ingredients. He felt the scorching heat immediately hit his face. He lowered the ingredients into the bowl and heard a sizzling sound. A puff of smoke followed, indicating they had burned to a crisp.

"Bloody hell," Lucas muttered, wiping the sweat off his brow. "The flame is far too hot."

He considered putting an aura barrier around his body to provide additional protection, but it required too much aura to maintain. Using his aura to manipulate the flames was expensive enough, and his aura was finite. He just needed to be especially careful.

He had performed some experiments and discovered that his aura recovered at a rate of twenty per hour. It took ten hours to replenish but regenerated twice as fast when he slept. So far, nothing else positively affected the rate, like eating food, but thanks to all the ingredients he had examined previously, he knew that some ingredients had aura-restorative properties.

Once he depleted his aura, he would use his old alchemical method to try and create a potion that could restore his aura. He had no idea if the Rota Kingdom had anything comparable, but he didn't have access to it even if they did. There was nothing in Arceus' Emporium either. He would have to do things the hard way.

He checked the bottom of the alchemy pot to make sure that the flame hadn't burned through it, but it looked fine. Whoever made the pot knew what they were doing.

The door opened behind him, and Max poked his head inside.

"Why didn't you tell me you were making potions?" Max's voice resonated in Lucas's mind.

Lucas smiled. "I should have told you earlier, Max. I know how much you enjoy alchemy."

Max stepped into the room, which was no easy feat considering his bulk. However, Lucas designed the hut to accommodate Max's size.

"What are you doing? What kind of alchemy is this?"

Lucas explained briefly, and Max grew visibly excited. Without hesitation, he stepped into his role as assistant and prepared another set of ingredients for him.

"Hang on, I need to learn how to control the flame's temperature first," Lucas said. "It wasn't something I considered before starting. But how am I supposed to measure the temperature?"

He could get a rough idea of how hot the flame was by feeling alone, but he needed something more precise. The flame's temperature was not consistent throughout, judging by the variety of colours it produced. Although, it could be because it wasn't a normal flame. He should have gotten a better explanation from Mew. Now, he just had to experiment.

Lucas was momentarily stumped. Were pyrometers invented in this world? Was there an easier method he wasn't considering?

"Use Ashe."

"Not a bad idea."

Lucas left the hut and persuaded Ashe to help him by stroking her fur, paying particular attention to her tails. By this point, she had grown four tails. One of the requirements for her to evolve into Ninetails was to have eight tails, which he assumed was related to her level. Unless there was another factor he wasn't aware of.

First, he needed to explain to her how temperature measurements worked, and he used the kitchen oven as a teaching tool to help her understand the fundamentals. Ashe was intelligent, so she caught on quickly. Next, he drew a rough chart with temperatures ranging from 0 to 1000 Celsius (1832 Fahrenheit). He was certain it was overkill, but he wanted to be prepared.

Back inside the hut, he first asked her to point out the temperature of his flame inside the pot. Ashe only took a second before she indicated the temperature on the chart. Now that he had a baseline, he needed to work on controlling the temperature of the flames better.

He had an idea, but he just needed to figure out a way to manage it. If he could change the composition of the barrier around the flame, he could control how much oxygen was passing through, and deprive the flame of some of its fuel. This would affect how long the flame burned but he didn't need it to last for hours, as he could always take more from the pot, or reignite the ash.

Lucas worked on changing the barrier but got middling results. Ashe reported that the temperature of the flame lowered overall by a small margin, but the consistency throughout was still terrible. Once his aura was depleted, he began experimenting with his old alchemy set to create a new potion.

Two days later, Lucas held a vial up to his face, holding a dark blue liquid inside. It had taken him a lot of trial and error, but he could feel that he had finally succeeded in creating an aura restorative potion.

"What do you think, Max?"

Max gave him a thumbs up.

To confirm his suspicion, he retrieved his guidebook and looked for a new entry under the potions section.

Aura Elixir of Renewal

Description: The potion can instantly restore a hundred units of aura upon consumption. Unfortunately, due to the alchemist's limited expertise and techniques in its creation, it isn't the highest quality. Moreover, its composition possesses addictive properties when consumed excessively. For safety reasons, it is advised not to ingest more than six doses per day to prevent potential adverse reactions and side effects.

"Not bad," Lucas mused. "This elixir allows me to fully restore my aura three times a day. I can craft a better potion once I grasp the new alchemy method."

Lucas gulped down the vial's contents, wincing at the bleach-like taste assaulting his senses. A cool, refreshing sensation cascaded down his throat. Despite the unpleasant flavour, the potion elicited a euphoric sensation, hinting at its addictive nature. When he checked his status, he saw that half of his aura had been restored. He immediately took another dose.

The batch had only produced two potions, so he needed to make more before resuming his alchemy practice.

Three days later, Lucas had made significant progress in controlling the flame's temperature.

He tossed the ingredients into the flames and watched as they quickly liquefied, reducing the plant to its chemical state, or essence. He was unsure what to call it. His alchemy method sounded like something out of a Chinese Wuxia novel, but he knew it wouldn't work with a regular flame.

With a flick of his wrist, he increased the temperature of the flames, causing the liquid to dry out quickly and turn into a sticky substance. When he was satisfied that it was the proper consistency, he reduced the temperature again. He levitated the substance out of the pot and began spinning it rapidly.

"Add the water," Lucas directed.

Max poured the vial of water onto the substance. Lucas watched carefully as it began turning a reddish colour as it blended with the water. Eventually, the substance transformed into a smooth, light red paste.

"That should suffice."

He carefully placed the paste in a bowl, taking care not to spill any of it. Another bowl sat beside it, containing another healing salve that he made using the old method to serve as a comparison. They appeared almost identical to the naked eye, but he thought his new creation was a little glossier.

"You have done it this time!" Max's excitement echoed through his mind.

"We both did it."

Lucas was confident but he double-checked his guidebook.

Healing Salve (Superior Quality)

Description: A potent salve formulated through an innovative alchemical fusion, harmonising ancient techniques with the essence of a legendary Pokémon's eternal flame, renowned for its potent healing and fortifying properties. This salve not only heals the Pokémon's condition up to three stages but also accelerates the recuperative process for minor injuries such as bruises, sprains, and cuts.

Lucas showed the written entry to Max, who thumped his chest in delight.

With the same ingredients, he made a salve that was superior to the old one, demonstrating that his new method was viable. Sure, it was only one salve, so he still had a long way to go, but his efforts over the past few days were not in vain.

He opened his menu, wondering if creating the new method had levelled up his alchemy profession. To his surprise, it had done more than that, transforming his entire alchemical profession—only one of his original skills remained unchanged. He referred back to his guidebook to better understand the changes.

Pyrokinetic Alchemy Lv. 7

Green Thumb [Active/Passive] (Level 3/3)

Synthesis [Active] (Level 1/5)

Essence Extraction [Passive] (Level 1/3)

Temperature Control [Passive] (Level 1/1)

Skill: Synthesis Level 1/5 Next: 2 SP Type: Active Charges: 30/30

Description: A skill derived from the Pyrokinetic Alchemy method. Synthesis is the art of harmoniously blending diverse magical essences to craft potent and efficacious concoctions with precise and targeted effects. As the alchemist progresses in this skill, his or her ability to meld essences improves, allowing them to create higher-quality concoctions and potentially discover new, unexplored effects.

Skill: Essence Extraction Level: 1/3 Next: 3 SP Type: Passive Charges: -

Description: Essence extraction is a skill that improves the alchemist's ability to draw forth the pure essence locked within ingredients. This process requires precision and finesse as the alchemist delicately separates the essence from its material form, burning away impurities with the eternal flame while preserving its potency and purity for alchemical purposes. Advancement in this skill increases the alchemist's ability to extract a greater amount of essence from each ingredient.

Skill: Temperature Control Level Max Next: - Type: Passive Charges: -

Description: This skill allows alchemists to master a flame's temperature, resulting in fewer errors, increased efficiency, and higher-quality concoctions.

Lucas gave the new skills careful consideration. "Creating the healing salve was challenging enough on its own. I may need to improve these skills to improve my chances of making potions, and eventually pills."

His Aura Barrier skill had been upgraded to level three, lowering the barrier's cost slightly while increasing its strength. His Aura Infusion and Sculpting skill had also increased to level three and his aura capacity had doubled to four hundred.

He reviewed his experience points. He estimated that he had enough experience to level up at least three times, possibly four. Since he was going to be doing another grinding session soon, he didn't see the need to save it. He spent the experience points in his cache to level up to thirty-nine, gaining eight more skill points.

"That is unexpected," Lucas said, realising his aura capacity had increased by eighty. It was nice to know there were other ways to boost his aura.

He spent nine skill points to upgrade his Synthesis skill twice and his Essence Extraction skill once. It should be enough to sustain his pyrokinetic alchemy technique for the moment. Since he had no desire to make any more salves, he would immediately focus on improving the Aura Elixir of Renewal and the growth potion.

In the future, he needed to remember that any potions or pills he wanted to sell had to be reproduced using the old method. The pyrokinetic alchemy method could not be replicated, so it would only be used for his benefit. Even though his alchemy profession had changed, he had enough experience to make potions the old way.

Lucas checked his watch. "Let's go up to the house, Max. It's lunchtime."

Daisy and Brock took him through the Pokemon Den after lunch, showing him how his breeding Pokemon were progressing. He had been so preoccupied with alchemy for the past few days that he hadn't spent much time with them. He brought a notebook with him to take notes and keep track of the egg dates.

"The Pokemon have produced eight eggs so far," Daisy said. "That's not including the first Eevee egg"

Lucas visited the Eevees first. When he walked into the room, something dropped on his head, and he looked up to see a pink blob staring down at him.

"Ditto!"

Lucas grabbed Datto and tickled him, making him gurgle with laughter. "You little rascal. Stop ambushing me."

He set Datto down, who bounced over to his Eevee partner.

The Eevee egg that he had produced first only had ten days left before it hatched, and he still hadn't acquired the experience it needed to spend on its levels and special conditions. There was no rush, as he could always pause its hatching for the low cost of ten experience points, but he would rather keep the momentum going now that it had started. He had created a nest for it and placed a Waterstone inside to ensure its evolution preference was Vaporeon, which he was missing from his collection.

The second Eevee pair had also produced an egg, which would take another thirty-five days to hatch. He was going to change its evolution preference to one that he didn't already have: a Glaceon.

To his surprise, Datto and its Eevee partner had also produced an egg. He reached out, put his hand on it, and used Egg Insight to check its parameters.

"Interesting," Lucas murmured. "It makes sense that the inherited traits are lower since Datto has so many of them, but the Eevee is still going to get a lot of them."

To acquire the Auto-Revival trait for Eevee, he needed to purchase the Trait Assurance special condition.

This egg was going to have a preference for Sylveon. Between the adult Eevees and the eggs, he would have all the evolutions covered. After that, he could work on producing pairings for all of them.

Lucas paused as something occurred to him. Was inbreeding a thing among Pokemon? He had never considered that aspect before. He didn't think there was inbreeding since Maggie, the Eevee breeder, told him that she had produced her Eevees from a single pairing. There was also the fact that it would be harder for Pokemon Breeders to build pedigrees among their group of Pokemon if inbreeding was a thing.

Lucas turned to Datto. "Are you feeling up for some more love?"

"Ditto?" Datto tilted his head.

"There is still the sixth Eevee," Lucas said, pointing to the one that was alone. "How about you show him a good time, and produce another egg?"

"Datto!" Ditto flopped over in shock.

"What? Isn't polyamory a thing among Pokemon?"

The Eevees gave him judgmental stares, so he rose to his feet to escape the room. "I will leave you to it, shall I?"

Lucas checked in on all the Pokemon that had come from the farm. Out of all of them, only six paired Pokemon had produced eggs so far, but there was a reason for that. The Pokemon were Nidoran, Paras, Mankey, Cubone, Spheal, Cleffa, and Wooper, which were all between levels twenty-seven and thirty-five. The rest were between level ten and level twenty, so he didn't want them to produce eggs until they had increased their level some more.

He was faced with a dilemma. Did he spend some of his team's experience to level them up, or did he take them out to grind for experience himself? Then a realisation hit him. He didn't need to take the Pokemon out himself, as they would still accumulate experience points because they were still considered his Pokemon, even if it was only a pseudo bond.

Everyone else's Pokemon were different from his, as they didn't get a choice when their Pokemon levelled up. It happened automatically after reaching a threshold, so the trainers had to be careful about training; otherwise, they would miss out on stats.

Lucas turned to Daisy and Brock, who were hovering close by. "These Pokemon need to be taken out to strengthen themselves. Some of them need to improve before I consider breeding them, and others are weakened from producing an egg."

Daisy nodded. "I agree, but me and Brock are swamped with taking care of their daily needs. We need more employees."

"We don't need full-time employees," Brock corrected. "I know Yolanda and Salvadore wouldn't mind earning some pokedollars. School will be back in session soon, but they can always work in the afternoon."

Lucas nodded. "That's a good idea. That will free the two of you up to take these guys training."

"What are you going to do about the single Pokemon?" Daisy asked.

Lucas thought for a moment. "I'm going to experiment with cross-species breeding at some point. For the moment, just train them like the rest."

In a historic televised address, the Prime Minister of the Kalos region stood before a podium, surrounded by cameras and reporters from around the world. The atmosphere was charged with excitement and anticipation as the Prime Minister began to speak.

"Ladies and gentlemen, trainers and Pokemon enthusiasts," the Prime Minister's voice rings out, capturing the attention of millions. "I am thrilled to announce a groundbreaking discovery that will forever change the world of Pokemon. Today, we unveil the existence of Mega Evolution!"

Lucas watched the scene from the comfort of his living room. "So, they are finally announcing it."

The news sends shockwaves through the crowd, and gasps of disbelief can be heard as the Prime Minister continues to explain the implications of this incredible revelation. The screen behind the Prime Minister lit up, displaying stunning visuals of several Pokemon undergoing the transformative power of Mega Evolution. It even showcased a majestic Mega Pidgeot soaring through the skies. Lucas' eyes widened in amazement as he beheld the transformation, his excitement palpable at the prospect of witnessing such power up close soon.

Sabrina entered the living room and flopped down on the couch next to him. Salem appeared behind her and massaged her shoulders, eliciting a contented sigh from Sabrina as the tension melted away.

"Did you have fun?" Lucas asked.

"Not particularly," Sabrina replied, her voice tinged with exhaustion. "With my Pokemon at such high levels, the process of levelling them up becomes quite tedious."

She had been training her Pokemon on the eastern coast, near Route 12, where there were some high-level Pokemon that could pose a challenge to her team.

"They are announcing the Mega Evolution!" Sabrina exclaimed. "I thought it would take another month or two."

"Why's that?"

"Because negotiations are taking place behind the scenes between various governments to obtain the technology for the Mega Bracelets. There haven't been many Mega Bracelets or stones that have travelled outside of the region."

Lucas leaned over and kissed her. "Are you saying I am extremely lucky to have such an influential girlfriend?"

Sabrina laughed. "If I had obtained a Mega Stone suitable for one of my Pokémon, I doubt I would have parted with it."

"Are there many types out there? The television coverage only showcased a few."

Sabrina shook her head. "Only seven so far. Mega Stones are extremely rare, so finding them in the first place was a miracle. I'm sure now that they have been announced, the other regions are going to start digging for them. I don't know if they can be found in other regions, but it's not going to stop them from trying."

"The mega stones don't need to appear anywhere else. I bet that is what the Kalos Prime Minister is hoping for," Lucas said. "Imagine the economic boost that will occur when everyone and their mother flock to the region to dig them up."

"That's right," Sabrina replied. "What is the point of keeping it for themselves if they cannot profit from it? To gain a military advantage over other regions? For what reason? With Arceus' Decree still in effect, they have to be careful not to upset the legendaries."

Lucas suppressed a flicker of discomfort at Sabrina's words. If she were aware of the absence of Arceus from the world and the likelihood of the legendary Pokémon becoming more autonomous in the future, her perspective would undoubtedly shift. That is why he didn't tell her about the revelation Mew shared. If it made it out, the world would be in complete chaos.

"I am sure there is a mega stone out there for one of your Pokemon," Lucas reassured her.

Sabrina smiled. "I hope so."

He knew all of the Mega Pokemon by heart, so he was certain she had five potential Mega Pokemon, including Salem. The remaining four were: Alakazam, Gengar, Medicham, and Metagross. He found the coincidence to be completely insane. Either that or she had retained a smidgen of her psychic abilities, working behind the scenes to ensure a positive outcome.

Lucas rubbed his nose with a smile on his face. She had met him, so she was incredibly fortunate. If she knew what he was thinking, she would smack him for his arrogance.

He couldn't even imagine if she were to have five mega-evolved Pokemon in her team simultaneously, even though Salem wasn't technically part of it. The power she could wield at her fingertips was unimaginable.

He could technically mega-evolve two of his Pokemon, Pidgeot and Dante, even though the latter was not on his main team. Speaking of which, now that Icaria wouldn't be there, it was time to recruit another team member. Should he go for one that can mega-evolve, or not? He wasn't biased towards one or the other.

"Perhaps we should go there and hunt for the stones ourselves," Lucas suggested, the idea having just occurred to him.

Sabrina raised an eyebrow. "Are you serious?"

Lucas nodded. "I still have commitments here, but I can use Dante to travel back and forth if I need to. Did I tell you about the device Bill gave me?"

"No."

Lucas pulled back his sleeve and showed her the watch. "This allows Dante to teleport without the aid of the towers."

Sabrina sucked in a breath. "That's incredible."

"I have been considering asking Bill to make one for you as well. Then you will have a much easier time getting around."

"I certainly wouldn't mind it. But back to the idea of going to Kalos. Honestly, I would not mind the trip. I need to get away from Kanto for a while because all of the attention is exhausting."

"How about this?" Lucas leaned forward. "Give me another week to evolve Icarus into Pidgeot, and we will fly to Kalos in style. We can test out his mega evolution. How long will it last? Do you believe we can make it all the way there in one go?"

The Kalos region was located west of Johto and separated by a massive mountain range. Flying all the way there from Viridian City was no easy feat, but that didn't take into account just how fast Icarus would fly when he mega-evolved.

Sabrina appeared to be taking the idea seriously. "So far, the longest mega transformation has lasted twelve hours, but this is dependent on several factors, such as their energy capacity."

Lucas smiled and pulled her into her arms. "It's already in the bag. Icarus has never failed me before."

Sabrina nestled into his arms. "Have you decided about Butch yet?"

"I'm going to hire him," Lucas said. "But it can wait until we return from Kalos."

"If you are certain. He seems a little sketchy."

"So is Meowth, but you keep buying all that salmon for him."

Sabrina snorted. "I fear he would steal it from somewhere else if I didn't."

"That is true."

Over the next few days, Lucas dedicated himself to advancing Icarus' training, focusing on increasing his steel-type affinity to the critical fifty percent threshold required for evolution. Determined to speed up the process, he spared no expense in acquiring a series of affinity potions to supplement Icarus' training regimen, ensuring maximum efficiency in his evolution preparation. He also fed Icarus a growth potion, which increased his size by a significant margin and guaranteed that Icarus would be massive when he evolved, regardless of whether he gained the giant trait.

He didn't neglect the rest of his team either and they were making excellent progress. Especially Ashe, who was now level twenty-one and had six tails. He had also taught her a new move. Will'o Wisp, a move that could inflict burn status, was a useful addition to her arsenal.

Aside from that, he continued to practise his new alchemy skill, eventually levelling up and creating a more powerful version of the aura elixir. It was capable of restoring two hundred units of aura, a significant improvement over its previous iteration. He also levelled up his Aura Infusion and Sculpting skill to four, increasing his aura by another four hundred. He now had eight hundred eighty aura capacity, which felt enormous given where he was just a short time ago.

On the fifth day of his weekly promise to Sabrina, Icarus fulfilled the requirements for evolution. He made sure to record the event, as he does with all of his Pokemon evolutions, and Sabrina, Daisy, and Brock were present to witness it.

Icarus spread his wings wide, his feathers catching the sunlight and creating a dazzling display of colours across the landscape. A burst of light erupted as Icarus's form began to elongate and expand, his silhouette transforming before the onlookers' eyes. Pidgeotto's avian beauty gave way to the majestic figure of Pidgeot. Lucas looked up, in awe, as he beheld his first companion finally reach his final form.

He noticed an odd detail. On Icarus' crest, there was a new strip of yellow feathers fanning out behind him, and it was gathered at the front, creating a regal crown-like appearance atop his head.

"You look amazing," Lucas said, moving forward to stroke Icarus' feathers. The massive Pokemon leaned down so that his crest could receive some attention.

It was evident that Icarus didn't get the giant strain, but it hardly mattered. Icarus was huge, and that was before he transformed into a Mega Pidgeot. He stood at about nine feet and his wingspan must have been fourteen feet, with a considerable body mass as well. He could seat him and Sabrina comfortably and still have room to spare.

Lucas took a look at his parameters.

Lucas smiled. Who knew his promise back then would be reflected in Icarus' parameters?

"Do you remember what you said when you named me?" Icarus asked.

"That I would make you an emperor of the skies."

"I feel like I have achieved that now."

Lucas pulled out the mega stone from his pocket. "No. There's one more step."
