Brenna will never forget the summers in Athens. The crowds were more thanks to tourists, the sound of bouzoukia and singing were down every street, just everything seemed like a summertime Christmas to her. This even takes the time of Beauxbatons out of her mind as something magical. Being at home was where she felt the most comfortable.
Brenna's only been in Greece for about five years now, she and her father moved around a lot for his work but he made sure to be in the range of Beauxbaton Academy. She didn't mind that, but to be honest, she knew her father was itching to go to Greece for a while now. So when the move finally happened, she tried to conjure up her teachings at school; dignity and grace. At first, she tried her best to not like the move and even stayed inside for almost a week when she and her father finally had everything settled down. But the hospitality of Greeks came rushing to their door and despite her best efforts, she became quick friends with her neighbors.
Brenna took a bite from her gyro as she waited for Fotini to grab hers. She chose this time to glance up to the Acropolis, standing half destroyed but still perfect as ever. Her stomach sank as she couldn't help but wonder what kind of ancient magic was on the ruins of Greece to keep them standing as they are now. Her train of thought was interrupted as Fotini wrapped her arms through Brenna's and made her follow her back to their home. Brenna gladly took the distraction as she tried to keep up with Fotini's train of thought.
"Remember, we're going to go to the concert at the end of the week" Fotini was saying as she blushed, "Yiannis will be there, Despoina is going to make sure of it"
"And if he comes" Brenna said, "We will leave you alone with him, at least as alone as you can be at a concert"
Fotini giggled as she looked to Brenna, "We will find you a nice Greek man there as well"
"They're more interested in tourists this time of year" Brenna waved off.
"Not true" Fotini objected, "You have batt down plenty of men this season, to them, you look like a tourist as well"
"I was born in the United Kingdom" Brenna side nodded, "Although I don't remember my time there"
"Maybe we should go next summer?" Fotini suggested, "Wouldn't that be fun, just the girls"
Brenna smiled, "I would love that"
The pair got to their apartment building where Brenna unlocked the door and let the girls in. Despoina and Margarita were the other two that Fotini was suggesting, they were working on this day but knew that they would love to have an adventure. They both chose to jog up the stairs as Brenna reached her floor first. She turned to her friend and kissed her on the cheek before making her way down the hall. Brenna unlocked the door and opened it only to find both her parents were in the apartment, causing her to quickly shut the door.
"Mom" Brenna hesitated, "What are you doing here?"
Her mother was sitting at the table as her father, Nicholas, had just came back to the table with a beverage for her, "Brenna, why don't you sit down?"
She glanced between them, "Why?"
"We have something to share with you" her mother spoke with this unnatural grace, "A task is being presented to you"
Brenna gasped as her blood went hot and cold at the same time. She didn't know it was possible to receive a task, she hasn't even heard of a task assigned to a child in centuries. She looked to her mother who held her gaze as if she knew what Brenna was thinking. Hell, she probably did, Brenna wouldn't have been surprised. For her mother was Athena, the Goddess of War, Wisdom, and Handicraft.
"A task?" Brenna repeated, "No! No, that can't be! You guys swore to never put tasks on us after the last couple have failed, why now?"
"Because the need outways what happened in the past" Athena straightened herself up, "Besides, none of the failed tasks were from my children"
Brenna couldn't help but roll her eyes as her father cleared his throat, "Are you going to sit down, Bri?"
Brenna bit her lip but made her way over to the table where feta cheese sprinkled with olive oil and oregano was present, although untouched. She knew her father was doing the utmost to please her mother but Brenna knew the truth, she wouldn't stay long. Brenna plopped herself down and folded her arms over her chest, "Why me?"
"My father favors me" Athena said, "He knows that I will not disappoint him and expects the same from my children. Out of everyone, you are of age to blend in and help when needed. This task will not be an easy one, I can assure you that. It will take years before your help is needed the most"
Brenna furrowed her eyebrows as she turned and looked to her father as if he could just get to the point. Brenna only heard of her step- siblings but never met them. As far as she is aware, she has an older brother and sister but also a younger brother. She was the only one in her teen years and to her, that seems too young to be dealing with tasks from Gods and Goddesses. She looked back to her mother's ever perfect and stoic face as if she was waiting for Brenna to say something.
"This task is going to take years?" Brenna asked.
"We are warning you now because of the danger it possesses" Athena turned to Nicholas, reached out and took his hand, "It is going to greatly affect your father's world"
"Witches and Wizards" Brenna glanced between the two, "Since when do the Gods care about what happens to them?"
Brenna learned really quickly that some of the Greek Gods don't like Wizards or even Witches. Saying that their abilities are just an abomination and should be wiped from the face of the Earth. But Athena and a few others saw her father's kind as any kind of mate and chose not to discriminate against them. Athena, again, had more leeway than most since she was the King of the Gods favorite child and learning about Brenna didn't cause much impact on Brenna occasionally seeing her mother from time to time. Whenever she found a rich mind, man or wizard, that would be her next mate.
"Zeus chose not to intervene the first time around" Athena began, "The cost was deadly and catastrophic for everyone involved. The non-magical world took the effects as well which severed the ties of beliefs in the Gods. As they lost faith in our protection, we lost our powers for a time being. Fortunately, this Dark Wizard was weakened so terribly that the night of the celebration lifted people's spirits into belief once again"
"I've only briefly talked about this… Dark Wizard" Nicholas said, "It is He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. At that time, everyone thought that it was going to be the end of the Wizarding Word. Your mother came and told me what happened to her and warned me to start travelling away from the Wizarding World in London and to keep travelling. Learning that you were not only a half-breed, but a half-breed who is Witch and Goddess was too great of a risk for you"
Brenna then understood that her little teen angst about being assigned a task was nothing compared to what was coming ahead, she glanced between her parents again before she said, "What must I do?"
