Chapter One – Into the Woods

A/N: I decided to give a shot at a Twilight fic. I never really liked the pairing Paul and Rachel, and I love any type of wolf shifter story. So, this is my story about Paul and my OC. The story is AU, only slightly mentions the original story line, and the ages are altered to fit my story.

Obviously, I do not own any Twilight characters, only my own and plot.

Enjoy and please let me know what you think!

"No matter where you run we will find you. There is no place to hide witch, we will claim it." The man threatened.

"I would rather die." I responded, slowly moving back towards the window behind me, trying not to draw too much attention, and keeping my mind blank.

"That can be arranged witch." A woman's voice retorted in a sickeningly sweet voice. "Be smart, give us what we want."

I narrowed her eyes, my hand reaching behind me before smirking. "How about…. No." Before they could process what was happening, I pulled the curtains down, and pushed through the balcony door, letting the mid-day sun into the room, climbing over the balcony railing and letting myself fall onto the ground below and running as fast as I could into the celebrating crowds in the street.

I gasped as my eyes flew open, flickering around the room until my brain processed that I was a dream and that I was safe in the cottage I rented in Forks. I took deep breaths, slowly calming my pacing heartbeat as my hand settled over my chest.

"Just a dream, I fine." I repeated multiple times continuing to take deep breaths.

Once my heartbeat settled and I was breathing normally, I swung my legs off the couch I clearly passed out on the let me head fall into my hands. Rubbing my face as I stood I walked towards the back door of the cottage and opened it to the back yard, letting the chilly air surround me as I stepped onto the back patio.

I had come to Forks, Washington five days ago when I found an available rental that was surrounded by woods, it was secluded and sat near the edge of a native American reservation of the Quileute tribe, but not directly on the land. When I saw it, something told me that was where I needed to be, and my instincts have kept me alive this long, why doubt them now?

I took a deep breath again, wrapping my arms around myself, trying to ward off the cold air. I let my eyes trail along the tree line, slowly walking down the steps of the patio onto the grass. Instinctually my eyes landed on the protection totems I hung around the yard in front of the trees as soon as I moved in. I couldn't shake the feeling that something was out there, but it wasn't causing the flight response I had become accustomed to.

Paul

I maneuvered through trees along the edge of the boarders of the rez, I heard Jared coming up to me from the right before he appeared, his large brown wolf form moving swiftly next to me.

"All quiet, let's head back, our shifts almost over." Jared told me, motioning his head back towards Sam and Emily's house.

I went to follow him before a scent hit me, it was like dark roses and sugar, I slid to a stop and turned my head in the direction, sniffing the air.

"Do you smell that?" I asked, turning my body in the direction I found the smell coming from and walked towards it.

"Smell what? Paul, I don't smell anything, come on man, Kim is waiting for me." Jared whined annoyingly in my head.

"So go, I'm going to figure out what it is." I didn't bother waiting for him to reply before leaping in the direction of this scent, following it through the trees, completely tuning out Jared's voice as I went, I had to figure out what and where it was coming from.

Before I realized it, I stopped at the tree line behind a small white cottage just beyond the boarder of our reservation. I watched as a shadowed figure who stood on the patio slowly walked down the steps making their way towards the tree line.

The clouds finally moved, allowing the light of the moon to shine on the yard and reveal the figure. Slowly I crouched, laying down and staying as still as possible, watching what had to be the most exquisite woman I had ever seen stand in the moonlight.

I tracked her movements with my eyes, watching her raise her head to the sky, eyes closed, her arms where wrapped around her toned and curvy figure, trying to rub away the cold air. She was completely underdressed in this weather, with her tight jeans and form fitting sweater. I let my gaze trail down what I could see of her body and saw she was also bare foot, before taking in the rest of her. Her long bright red curly hair hung loose around her, blowing subtly in the breeze, amazingly it complemented her tanned complexion perfectly.

"Paul.. what was it?" Jared's voice brought through my mind.

"Nothing, head home Jared. It's all good." I told him, for some reason not wanting him anywhere near here or her. I kept my mind blank until I felt him phase back to his human form, and I was finally alone and could focus on the strange woman.

I heard the woman sigh, her head lowering and open her eyes, staring straight at me through the trees. I tensed, unsure if she actually was able to see me, until my gaze fully connected with hers, even in my wolf form, I felt everything stop and fade away except her.

"Shit." I thought to myself, unable to take my eyes away from the woman, who was still standing in the middle of her yard, staring where I was laying in the tree.

I felt my body seize as I looked into the trees, not seeing anything, my heart started beating quickly again. I shifted my bare feet in the grass, trying to sense if I was found already, but all I felt was peace and safety, after a few moments I relaxed, finally noticing movement.

My breath hitched as I watched a horse-sized silver-looking wolf slowly step out of the trees. My eyes widened, as what I am assuming is a male, took tentative steps towards me.

"Good, mammoth looking wolf, please don't eat me." I muttered, trying to keep any movement I made invisible. As if he heard and understood my words, the wolf whined and laid down a few feet in front me, almost as if he was trying to make himself smaller, less threatening. My body started moving of its own accord, taking small steps towards this insanely large predator, who was lying in front of me.

"You won't hurt me right?" I asked, slowly reaching my hand out to feel its thick fur on the side of his face, watching as he closed his eyes, almost pushing his head into my hand. I smiled, letting my fingers run through his soft fur. "You're gorgeous." I whispered before his eyes suddenly shot open and he quickly stood up to his full height, causing my to be pushed back, almost falling on my ass.

The wolf turned his head towards me, and his humanlike eyes took me in, roaming down my body as if checking if I was hurt.

"I'm fine, you just stood rather quickly." I explained to him, feeling like an idiot for talking to a wolf, who in all intensive purposes was probably a figment of my stress-addled brain. I narrowed my eyes as he nodded his head, almost as if he was agreeing with me, a split second later he leaped into the tree line again, disappearing into the darkness.

"I really need to get my mind under control." I told myself, forcing my body to return to my cottage and head to bed.

Paul

I couldn't help myself; I knew what I did was a giant risk, but my body moved on its own. Feeling her hand and fingers run through my fur was the most amazing sensation I had ever experienced. I didn't want to leave, but the moment I felt Sam's presence enter the back of my mind, I knew I had to get out of there.

I cursed myself when she almost fell over when I stood suddenly, but hearing her tell me she was fine, as if she felt my concern helped, before I left her reluctantly. Knowing I couldn't hide this, no matter how hard I tried, I made my way towards Sam's house.

"Paul? I thought your shift ended?" Sam asked me.

"I need to talk to you; I think I just imprinted." I quickly told him, wanting to say something before anyone else could hear.

"House, now." He replied as he disappeared from my mind, he clearly phased back. Five minutes later I was pulling up my cut-offs and walking out of the trees towards Sam who stood in his clearing with his arms crossed.

"What do you mean you just imprinted?" Sam asked gruffly.

I sighed, running my hand through my short black hair, before answering him. "I was on patrol with Jared, just as we were ending and heading back a scent hit me, and I had to follow it." Taking a breath, I continued explaining what happened to him. When I finished I watched as he lowered his head, not saying anything.

"Do you know who she is?" He finally asked, raising his eyes to mine.

I shook my head, resisting the urge to head back to the house. "She's living in the cottage that's been empty just outside the edge of our boarder. I haven't been on that side of the rez since last week for patrol, she must have moved in after."

Sam sighed and nodded his head, "Okay, go home Paul, get some rest. Meet back here and we can figure out who she is this afternoon." I narrowed my eyes at him, opening my mouth to argue, but he just raised his hand. "You're dead on your feet Paul. There's nothing we can do at dawn anyways. Don't do anything stupid."

Snapping my mouth shut ad clenching my jaw, I nodded before turning away from him and heading into the forest, I felt Sam's eyes on me as I kept walking until I was sure he couldn't see me and I switched routes, walking back towards the strangers cottage. Once I was far enough away from Sam's I phased making my way back faster.

I was back at the tree line before I knew it, walking around the perimeter I made sure nothing was off before finding a spot with a direct view of the back patio and laid down, allowing myself to fall asleep.

I slowly blinked my eyes open, letting my sleep-clouded vision clear. I pushed myself up from my bed, swinging my legs off the edge before standing and making my way towards my kitchen. I looked at the clock on the stove when I entered seeing that it was five o'clock in the evening.

"That's the longest period of straight sleep I've had in a long time." I muttered to myself making my way towards my back door and pushing it open. The sun was starting to set, and the sky was painted with washed reds, yellows, and oranges.

I shivered as the breeze blew across my bare shoulders, clearly forgetting the cold. I sighed sitting on the steps of the patio bringing my knees to my chest and wrapping my arms around them. I ran my gaze across the tree line seeing the totems still in place.

Subconsciously my eyes strayed to where the wolf had walked out of the trees the night before, I remember telling myself as I went to bed that it was just a lack of sleep illusion, it wasn't real, even though every bone in my body said that it was.

Another breeze blew through, this time my gaze snapping to the trees, I narrowed my eyes, wondering if I was actually seeing what I thought. Quietly and slowly, I stood and made my way across the yard to the trees.

Paul

Awareness suddenly woke me, my senses becoming alert. I snapped my eyes at the cottage seeing the patio door open but not seeing anyone. I stood quickly, panic was starting to creep in until a heard a twig snap to my right.

I spun baring my teeth until I saw it was her, she was standing staring at me, her mouth hanging open; unable to resist I took in her red unruly curls shing even brighter red in the fading sun, and her leggings and tight tank.

"You're real." She said to me as if she was trying to convince herself. I watched as she took a step towards me slowly. Wanting to put her at ease I laid down like I did last night, resting my head on the ground, only letting my eyes track her movements. A few moments passed and I felt her hand in my fur again, unable or unwilling to, my eyes closed at the sensation until I felt her sit next to head, opening my eyes I held her gaze.

"You're not a normal wolf, huh. Of course, all the places I choose, I pick the one with others." She started, laughing at herself clearly because I had no idea what she meant. "At least I know that you don't want to hurt me, otherwise you'd be a crispy dog."

Lifting my head and tilting it at her words, which clearly amused her because she started laughing a huge smile breaking on her face and her eyes sparkled. In retaliation I pushed her gently with my nose making her laugh harder.

"Didn't like that thought huh?" She uttered, running her hand on the ground she sat on, when I watched her hazel eyes suddenly glow before returning to normal before she stood quickly looking at me. "Apparently I have visitors, maybe I'll see you around pooch." She smirked before running off back towards her cottage, it was then that I noticed that she was barefoot again.

"Who the hell is she?" I thought watching the strange woman enter her cottage shutting the door behind her.

A/N: That's chapter one, please let me know what you guys think so far please. I'm hoping this gets the juices flowing for my other fics also.
