Chapter 4

Maura had noticed Jane's abandoned carry on, the police bag tag on it, when she had gone for the men, and had rolled it back with her, to hold it together with hers.

She kneeled by Jane again.

"Jane?" Maura tried.

"You need to leave, Doc. It is not safe here." Jane panted.

"What? Why?"

"Aftershocks. You said it yourself. I am good now while we wait for the EMTs. Go."

"No."

"Maura…"

"If it becomes dangerous, I will assess the need to go. Satisfied?"

"Hardly."

"Well, that is all you are going to get."

"Could you please help me roll over?" Jane asked, still panting.

"I just want to examine the back of your head for a moment. There is a lot of blood…"

Maura carefully separated strands of dark curls to find a bleeding cut. Jane hissed.

"I am sorry. This will need stitches…" Maura picked her purse, fishing a scarf from it. She usually had it handy in case the plane was too cold. She dabbed at the cut with some tissues, also blotting the blood that had already sipped before placing a doubled tissue on top of the cut, and tying it with the scarf around Jane's head, ensuring her hair was held back from her face, in a makeshift bandage.

Then, Maura carefully helped Jane to roll on her back, moving herself to sit so Jane's head could be lying on Maura's thigh. She noticed Jane was biting her lips inward to avoid whimpering in pain.

Maura picked more tissues, and now with Jane's full face in display, carefully removed the dust to make sure she would not cough or inhale the dust, and that it would not enter her eyes.

"Jane?"

Jane blinked unfocused eyes at her.

"Talk to me…"

"I'm good, Doc…" Jane tried, her voice weak, her breathing shallow. "Breathing is really hard… And tiring…" Jane panted, pain obvious in her strained features.

Maura picked the phone she had dropped in her bag after finishing with her mother, and dialed 911, as she watched concerned Jane closing her eyes and her features going slack. Maura suspected Jane was in and out of consciousness due to a reduced flow of oxygen. Maura hoped she was wrong. Best case scenario, Jane had a few broken ribs and breathing was really painful. Worst case scenario, Jane's broken ribs might have grazed her lungs and caused hemorrhage or a collapsed lung or both. This last case needed immediate care for Jane to survive.

After a few minutes with the operator, Maura disconnected, disheartened. A magnitude seven quake had caused a lot of damage all over town, and the EMT services were overwhelmed. She dialed the Foundation immediately after.

"Dr. Isles. Your mother just called us very concerned. We saw the news of a big earthquake."

"I am fine, Mr. Langdon, but only because my partner pushed me out of the way. She is really hurt."

Maura could not lie. If she lied, she broke into hives, and if she kept the lie, she would go as far as having a vasovagal episode. But Jane had been her partner. For a few days. At work. It was not a lie, Maura wished herself to keep calm.

"I am sorry to hear that, Dr. Isles."

Of the advantages of being rich. Nobody questioned her. The lawyers of the Foundation were paid to make things happen, not to ask questions.

"Was she added to your medical coverage?" they asked, discreetly, assuming Maura meant Jane was her partner as in a romantic or relationship partner, as Maura had counted they would.

"Not yet." It was true.

"If you can provide us with her name, we will make the amendments."

"More than that, I need a medical evacuation using a helicopter. Immediately. EMT Services are overwhelmed with the damage all over town, and she is severely hurt."

"Of course, Dr. Isles. Her name?"

"Jane Rizzoli." Maura replied, fishing Jane's wallet from the rucksack on the carry on. And she proceeded to recite Jane's date of birth.

"It is urgent, Dr. Langdon. She is really hurt." Maura asked with urgency.

"They will be in contact with you shortly, Dr. Isles."

And he disconnected.

"Jane?" Maura tried.

Nothing.

"Jane?"

"'mhere." Jane mumbled, her glazed eyes opening slowly and trying to focus on Maura.

Maura raised a hand to gently caress Jane's temple.

"I need you to stay awake, Jane. Please."

"Hmmm… kay."

"I am serious, Jane. Please, stay with me." Maura pleaded, urgently. She could see Jane was slipping, fast.

"Needafavor."

"Name it."

"Justn'case… please… tell m'family… I lovthem… that I'as good… happy…" Jane's voice was barely a breath. "Please?"

"You will tell them that yourself." Maura tried, surprised by how broken her own voice sounded.

"Yeah… justn'case. Please?"

"Count on it."

Jane nodded, her eyes closing again.

"Jane, I need you to try to stay awake."

"Hmm hmmm…" Jane's eyes opened, but immediately closed.

Maura's phone rang.

"This is Dr. Isles. Yes… At the airport. No, immediately. Crushed thorax or at least grazed and collapsed lung. I have no idea of damage to the landing strip. So helicopter it is. Okay. Hurry."

"Jane?"

"Hmmm."

"They will be here in a few minutes. Please hold on. Just a little longer."

"Hmmm hmmm."

Maura observed Jane's lips had turned purple.

"Talk to me, Jane."

"Can't… breath…" Jane's eyes closed again, and Maura noticed with despair as a thin trickle of blood showed up on one corner of Jane's lips.

Her phone rang, and as she answered, she heard: "We see you, we see you." She raised her hand and waved, and soon a gurney was rolling with medics by her side.

"This slab crushed her." Maura pointed out behind her as the medics carefully immobilized Jane and moved her to the gurney. "Only an arm and her head were out of it. Trouble breathing, just began hemoptysing. Complained of her shoulder as well. Does not seem to have spinal damage, she pointed out sensation on all her limbs." Maura explained, not recognizing the sound of her own voice.

"Are you hurt?"

"I am fine, thanks to her." Maura added, her hand on Jane's arm now on the gurney.

"Let's roll."

Maura followed them with their carry-on bags. The medics efficiently rolled the gurney to the helicopter, that turned on its rotors the moment the pilot spotted them on the tarmac.

Maura boarded with them as the medics urgently ordered the pilot around while they began connecting devices to Jane. They were finally on their way to a hospital.
