The days went on after your conversation with Deku. As the days bled into weeks, you and Deku had lunch on the roof together whenever you could and it was something that just felt so peaceful for you. He never brought up what happened the first time he found you up there. That is, until you two were eating lunch and he suddenly sat down his tray and looked you in the eyes.
"Watcha doin?" You mumbled as you continued to chew.
He took a deep breath. "Look, we both know you're putting it off. Am I wrong?" He tilted his head slightly and raised his eyebrows in a way that said he wasn't letting this go.
The food in your mouth seemed to turn to sand in your mouth as you stared into your lap while setting your lunch tray down. You ran a frustrated hand through your hair as you sighed: "I knooowww."
"You can't avoid it forever." He said softly as he gently pushed your messed up hair out of your face. "So, I decided to help you."
"What do you mean?" You sat up abruptly, now slightly anxious as to what he could have possibly planned.
"I knew you wouldn't have been willing to go to people on your own, so I'm bringing the people to you." Just as he finished his sentence, the door to the roof creaked open and a figure with spiky red hair and a toothy grin closed the door behind him and jogged lightly over to the bench where you and Deku were sitting.
"Yo yo yo!" He said in slightly playful tone as he sat next to you. "Midoriya said someone needed a manly man so here I am!" Kirishima smiled even wider while Deku pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed at how Kirishima chose to enter.
"That isn't what I said!" Deku snapped back while slightly chuckling. You just giggled at their interaction.
"Ya I know. I gotcha." He winked before he leaned back onto the edge of the roof and laced his fingers behind his head. "Midoriya told me a bit about what happened." He said, more seriously as his body relaxed.
"Oh." You looked down at your lap and crossed your legs so they wouldn't start shaking.
"Hey. It's nothing to be worried about." Kirishima said in a sweet voice as he turned to look at you. "I can't relate to your exact circumstance, but I can probably speak to your feelings a bit. Is that ok?" He looks at you with question and a look that says genuine care.
"Ok." You say quietly as you will your legs to stay still.
"I'm not entirely sure what feelings led up to this, but I can probably speak to any worthlessness that might have been there." He leaned onto his lap, resting on his elbows while he kept his gaze on you. "For me, it was my quirk and my own fear. I have a quirk that's supposed to be a bulletproof vest, but a moment of fear made it feel useless." He let out a small sigh as he thought about the monster in middle school that almost hurt Mina. "Again, not the same circumstances, but the feelings were there. A lot of my big dreams felt crushed as I didn't think I would ever be anything. I felt worthless because of something as stupid as a quirk."
You started crying softly and gave him a hug around his shoulders.
"Hey, why are you crying? This is my sob story not yours." Kirishima hugged you back softly, but pulled away when Deku made what seemed to be threatening eye contact.
"You're right, though." You wipe your eyes with the back of your hand. "Something like temporary feelings is nothing to get that worked up over."
"See, you're back now!" He gave you a toothy grin. "Besides, your own feelings don't even compare to how much you're cared for and valued. I for one would miss you."
"Really?"
"Oh yeah, lots!" He leaned back against the ledge as he smiled at the sky. "You being up there is really not the same as you being here."
"Aw thanks you guys!" You put one arm around both of them and brought them into a group hug that lasted several seconds.
"See, that wasn't so bad now was it?" Deku laughed as he booped the tip of your nose slightly.
"You're right. Again." You roll your eyes as you lightly ruffle his hair. Kirishima cleared his throat abruptly as he stood to leave.
"Well, I'll be off. Still haven't gotten my lunch so I'll leave you two to do whatever weird thing is going on here."
"Eijiro?" You grab his hand as he walks away.
"Hm?" He turns back slightly.
"Thank you."
"Anytime, dear!" He gave you both a wave as we ran back to the door. Deku looked deep in thought.
"Earth to the green hair!" You say as you wave your hand in front of his face.
"Sorry...Do you think this is weird?" He looked awkward and slightly concerned but you couldn't tell why.
"Why would I think that?" You said through the food you had just put in your mouth.
"Kirishima called it a 'weird thing' and I dunno...is he right?" He rung his hands slightly before awkwardly grabbing his glass of juice.
"Is helping friends weird? I don't think it is."
"Yeah, you're probably right." He laughed to himself and rubbed his neck before you both went back to eating your lunches in silence. Deku spent the rest of the day thinking about the interactions you guys have had and it suddenly hit him that he had almost threatened Kirishima for getting 'too close' to you.
He got to his dorm that night and while he lay on his back, staring at his ceiling, he thought to himself, "Is helping a friend all this is? I don't want them getting hurt. I had never looked at a friend as angrily as I looked at Kirishima." His thoughts tortured him as the night went on, but he needed to let it go no matter how much he knew that he wanted to keep you to himself. "Maybe protecting them, isn't my place. They can pick whoever they want. I guess I'm just here to help." The words ate at him, until lunch on the roof with you the next day.
