Chapter 3: Bonds Forged in Shadows
Arc: The Beginning of a New Path
--
Naruto and Sasuka sat together near the training grounds, their breaths still slightly ragged from the earlier bell test. Sakura was off to the side, her face creased with determination as she practiced throwing kunai. Kakashi stood in the distance, observing his team with a thoughtful expression.
After the test, Kakashi had allowed them a short break before training began in earnest. It was clear now: they were officially a team, and Kakashi was determined to mold them into something formidable. But beneath the surface, there were still tensions and unresolved emotions. Sasuka, for one, had grown quiet, her eyes distant, and Naruto couldn't help but notice.
"Hey, Sasuka," Naruto started, breaking the silence between them. "What's been eating at you since the bell test? You've been quieter than usual."
Sasuka's eyes flicked toward Naruto, her expression unreadable. "It's nothing," she replied coolly, her arms crossing over her chest.
Naruto wasn't convinced. He had known Sasuka for a long time now, ever since they were children. Even back then, she had this quiet, distant aura, but something had changed since the Uchiha Massacre. She wasn't the same anymore, and Naruto, for all his usual brashness, could feel it.
Kurama stirred inside him. That girl's harboring something heavy, Naruto, Kurama said, his deep voice rumbling through Naruto's mind. But she won't tell you unless she's ready.
Naruto sighed. He knew Kurama was right. Still, he couldn't shake the feeling that something big was looming over Sasuka, something that went deeper than her desire to become stronger. He had his own burdens, his own secrets—like the truth about his parents, which he had only recently uncovered—but somehow, Sasuka's felt heavier.
Before Naruto could press any further, Kakashi approached, his ever-present Icha Icha Paradise book tucked away for once. "Alright, Team 7. Break's over. Time to focus on improving your teamwork."
Sakura, who had been practicing on her own, rejoined the group with a determined look. "What are we doing today, Kakashi-sensei?" she asked eagerly, her gaze flicking between Naruto and Sasuka.
Kakashi gave a half-lidded smile. "We're starting with something simple: chakra control. Specifically, tree climbing."
Naruto blinked in confusion. "Wait… what?"
Kakashi chuckled softly, his visible eye crinkling in amusement. "Don't worry, Naruto. You'll understand once you see it." He turned to the nearby trees and demonstrated the technique, walking calmly up the trunk of a tree as if it were the most natural thing in the world. He stopped midway up and looked down at his team. "You'll need to control the amount of chakra you channel to your feet. Too much, and you'll repel off the tree. Too little, and you won't stick."
Sakura's eyes lit up with excitement, eager to prove herself. Sasuka, though still quiet, stood up without hesitation, already analyzing Kakashi's technique.
Naruto frowned, scratching his head. Great, another thing I'm probably gonna mess up, he thought.
Kurama growled in his mind. Quit doubting yourself, brat. You're capable of this—just focus.
Naruto closed his eyes briefly, centering himself. He had Kurama, and with his help, he knew he could do anything. "Alright! I'm gonna nail this!" he shouted, determination flashing in his eyes.
The training began, and soon, Sasuka and Sakura were scaling the trees with varying degrees of success. Sakura, surprisingly, excelled immediately, her control over her chakra refined. Sasuka, too, quickly found her rhythm, though her mind seemed distracted, her thoughts elsewhere.
Naruto, on the other hand, was struggling. Every time he tried to run up the tree, he would either fall flat on his back or barely make it a few steps before losing his grip.
Sasuka paused on her tree and looked down at Naruto. Her expression softened, and after a moment's hesitation, she called down to him. "You're focusing too much on using brute force, Naruto. Try channeling your chakra slowly."
Naruto looked up, surprised by her willingness to help. "Sasuka…"
She glanced away, slightly embarrassed. "Don't get the wrong idea. I just don't want you slowing us down."
Naruto grinned widely. "Yeah, yeah. Thanks anyway."
With Sasuka's advice and Kurama's encouragement, Naruto refocused. He took a deep breath and carefully controlled the chakra flow to his feet. Slowly but surely, he began to climb the tree, step by step. Before long, he had made it halfway up, a triumphant smile spreading across his face.
"I did it!" Naruto shouted, pumping his fist in the air.
Sakura clapped, and even Sasuka gave a small, approving nod.
Kakashi watched from the ground, his heart swelling with pride. Despite their differences, these three were starting to come together as a team. They still had a long way to go, but this was a promising start.

Flashback
That night, Sasuka sat alone in her room, staring out the window at the crescent moon. Her mind drifted to the past, to memories she often tried to suppress.
The Uchiha Compound… the smell of blood in the air… her mother's lifeless body…
Sasuka closed her eyes tightly, trying to block out the images, but they persisted. The face of the person who had taken everything from her loomed in her mind. Her sister, Itachi, standing over their parents' bodies, her expression cold and unreadable.
"Itachi…" Sasuka whispered, her fists clenching in her lap.
She didn't understand why Itachi had done it, why her once-loving sister had slaughtered their clan. The pain of that night still haunted her, driving her to become stronger, to find answers. She would make Itachi pay for what she had done, but deep down, a small part of her still yearned for the sister she once knew.
The sound of knocking interrupted her thoughts. "Sasuka, are you okay?" Naruto's voice came from the other side of the door.
Sasuka hesitated, unsure whether to respond. But then she realized that Naruto had a way of knowing when she was hurting, even when she tried to hide it.
"Yeah," she finally said. "I'm fine."
Naruto didn't push her further. "Alright, just… let me know if you ever wanna talk."
Sasuka's eyes softened. Naruto had always been a bit of a goof, but lately, he had been more perceptive than she gave him credit for.
"Thanks, Naruto," she said quietly.
As Naruto walked away, Sasuka returned her gaze to the moon. Her quest for vengeance was far from over, but for the first time in a long time, she didn't feel entirely alone.
