Chapter 5: Secrets Revealed

Arc: The Land of Waves

--

Tazuna's face was pale, his hands shaking as he clutched his sake bottle tighter. "I… I didn't tell you everything about this mission because I didn't think it was necessary. But now... I see I was wrong."

Kakashi's visible eye narrowed slightly, his hand resting casually on the hilt of his kunai. Naruto crossed his arms, frowning at the old man. "If there's something you're hiding, you'd better spill it now, old man."

Sasuka remained silent, but her piercing gaze never left Tazuna. Even Sakura, though still shaken from the sudden attack, looked concerned. The tension in the air was thick, and everyone was waiting for Tazuna's explanation.

Taking a deep breath, Tazuna finally spoke. "The truth is… I'm not just a bridge builder. The man who's after me is a wealthy tyrant named Gato. He's taken over the Land of Waves, and he controls everything—our trade, our economy, everything. I'm building a bridge to break his monopoly, and he's doing everything he can to stop me."

Kakashi sighed, rubbing the back of his head. "So, you're saying this is no longer a simple escort mission. This is more like a B-rank or even A-rank mission now."

Tazuna nodded, shamefaced. "I didn't have enough money to pay for a higher-ranked mission. If I told the truth, I knew the Hokage would send more experienced shinobi, but I couldn't afford it. Please, I'm begging you—don't abandon me. If the bridge isn't finished, my village will remain under Gato's control, and we'll all starve."

Naruto's eyes widened as he listened to Tazuna's plea. He clenched his fists, determination flooding through him. "We're not backing down," he declared. "We'll protect you, old man. No matter what."

Kakashi glanced at Naruto, then at Sasuka and Sakura. "This mission is far more dangerous than we were led to believe. You're all still genin. It's not too late to turn back and leave this to more experienced teams."

Naruto scoffed. "Turn back? No way! We're going to see this mission through to the end. Right, Sasuka?"

Sasuka, who had been quietly observing the situation, gave a small nod. "I agree. We've already come this far. Besides, it would be a disgrace to retreat now."

Sakura looked between her teammates, her expression conflicted. She wasn't as confident as the others, but the thought of letting them down weighed heavily on her. "I… I'll stay, too."

Kakashi smiled beneath his mask, impressed by their resolve. "Alright then. We'll continue the mission. But from now on, stay on high alert. We're likely to encounter more enemies, and they'll be stronger than the ones we've faced so far."

--

As the team resumed their journey, the atmosphere grew more serious. Naruto walked beside Sasuka, his expression unusually thoughtful. "Hey, Sasuka," he said quietly, "do you think we can really pull this off? I mean, taking on someone as powerful as Gato?"

Sasuka didn't answer right away. She stared ahead, her mind racing with thoughts of their current situation and her own past. Her thoughts drifted back to Itachi, her older sister, and the way she had always been able to handle even the most dangerous missions with ease. If Itachi-nee could do it...

"We'll manage," Sasuka said at last, her voice firm. "As long as we work together."

Naruto grinned, feeling a surge of confidence. "Yeah, you're right! With you and me, there's no way we can lose!"

Kurama stirred within Naruto, his voice low and amused. "You're quite eager for a fight, aren't you, brat? Just make sure you don't get too cocky."

Naruto grinned inwardly. "Relax, Kurama. I've got this."

Flashback

In the depths of Naruto's subconscious, Kurama lay in his cage, watching the young boy's progress over the past few months. Ever since Naruto had first learned of his heritage, the fox had been keeping a closer eye on him.

The brat's changed, Kurama mused. He's stronger now... smarter. But he still has a long way to go.

A faint memory stirred within the fox—of another blond-haired shinobi, just as determined, who had once stood in front of his cage. Minato, Kurama thought bitterly. It's been years since then. But this boy... he's his son, alright. The same fire, the same reckless courage.

Kurama's thoughts were interrupted as Naruto's presence approached his subconscious. "Hey, Kurama," Naruto said, appearing before the cage with a grin. "You're being awfully quiet. What's up?"

Kurama huffed. "Just making sure you don't get yourself killed on this mission."

Naruto's grin widened. "Don't worry! With you and me together, we're unstoppable!"

Kurama snorted, but a small part of him couldn't help but agree.

Back to Present

As the sun began to set, Team 7 finally reached a small clearing where they decided to set up camp for the night. Kakashi assigned Naruto and Sasuka to gather firewood, while Sakura stayed behind with Tazuna.

As they walked through the forest, Naruto and Sasuka maintained a comfortable silence, each lost in their own thoughts. But eventually, Naruto spoke up again.

"You know," he said, glancing at Sasuka, "I've been thinking. What if we run into someone really dangerous, like that Gato guy's ninjas? We're strong, but... do you think we're ready?"

Sasuka paused for a moment, her eyes narrowing slightly. "We'll have to be."

Her words were simple, but there was an underlying determination in them. Naruto grinned. "You're right. We've got this!"

Just as they finished gathering enough firewood, the pair heard a rustling sound from the bushes nearby. Sasuka's hand immediately went to her kunai pouch, her Sharingan flashing to life. Naruto tensed, ready to summon clones if necessary.

"Kakashi-sensei said to stay on high alert," Sasuka whispered, her eyes scanning the surroundings.

The bushes rustled again, and before they could react, a blur shot out, heading straight toward them. Sasuka moved instantly, throwing a kunai toward the blur, but it was deflected with a loud clang.

Naruto quickly summoned a few clones, surrounding the area as they prepared for an ambush. But before they could counterattack, a figure stepped into the clearing, their face covered by a mask. Two gleaming swords were drawn, and their posture exuded danger.

"I've found you," the figure said in a low voice. "You're not getting away."

Naruto's eyes widened. This wasn't just a simple bandit or rogue ninja. Whoever this was, they were far more dangerous.
