Chapter 1: Waking Up Somberly
It was a breezy, yet warm spring morning today, I love that we went on this camping trip, Benji thought. There was a stirring in his tent right next to him.
"Good morning sleepyhead", Benji said sweetly, while leaning over to kiss his boyfriend on his head.
"Ugh, I don't want to get up", Trevor, his boyfriend, grumbled sleepily.
"Good morning my favorite couple!" a voice exclaimed, coming from the girl poking her head into their tent.
"Hehe, good morning to you too Aurelia." Benji smiled back at her.
"Well, breakfast is ready! Kenny made pancakes." Aurelia smiled with enthusiasm.
"Ok we'll be right out." Benji replied, while Trevor groaned again.
"Come on mister, let's go." Benji laughed while taking Trevor's blankets off of him.
"Ok fineeee." Trevor said groggily.
The two guys got dressed and exited their tent together. The smell of pancakes, eggs and sausage wafted over from where Kenny was finishing up making everyone breakfast. He plated up the food and handed one to each of the members of the camping trip. One for Benji, one for Trevor, one for Aurelia, one for their other friend Julie, and then finally, Kenny plated himself some food.
"This is so good!" Aurelia exclaimed while eating her pancakes.
"You guys always know my cooking is exceptional." Kenny laughed while winking to Aurelia. She blushed at his winking, while Julie just rolled her eyes.
"You guys ready to hike today?" Benji asked the group excitedly.
"Yeah!" everyone else replied with excitement.
The group finished up breakfast quickly, got their hiking gear, and headed out to the trails. After an hour of sightseeing and hiking, they came to a fork on the trail. To the left was the rest of the trail, to the right was this kind of dense trail with lush foliage.
"Which way should we go?" Julie asked quizzically.
"Hmm, it doesn't seem like this fork in the trail actually exists." Trevor says while scratching his head, looking at the map on his phone.
"Wait what?" Benji asked very concerned, now also looking at the map.
"Oh my god! That sounds exciting! We could have an adventure!" Aurelia exclaimed childishly.
"Ehh, I don't knoww-" Kenny began worriedly.
"I don't think it would hurt to check it out quickly." Benji piped up, the other two nodding their heads.
"Then it's settled!" Aurelia exclaimed while jumping for joy. Kenny giggled at her excited state for an adventure.
The group headed out onto the mysterious trail. It seemed like it was just a normal part of that nobody used anymore, which was kind of weird to Benji. They came across an old rickety bridge that they had to cross to get to the other side. There was a waterfall behind it in the scenery with a small lake below. They noticed a sign that read, "DO NOT CROSS UNDER CONSTRUCTION!", the group looked at each other worriedly.
"I think it's time to turn around and go back." Kenny said nervously.
"It looks fine." Aurelia shrugged her shoulders.
"I would agree with Kenny on this one, but the bridge looks safe to me as well." Julie agreed.
The group nervously walked over the bridge while holding their breath. They sighed in relief when everyone got over okay.
"See, I told you, the bridge was fi-" Aurelia started, and then Julie screamed from the front of the group.
Everyone else turned around to see Julie backing up towards them, while a man with an axe was inching closer to the group.
"Did you fucking idiots not read the sign, do not cross the bridge!" the man growled loudly.
"We-we're sorry, we'll just go back to the trail." Trevor stammered.
"Y-yeah", Benji was starting to panic and Trevor noticed. Trevor held Benji's hand in comfort.
"Good!" the man yelled.
That got the group to turn around quickly and run over to cross the bridge again. Benji looked back and noticed that the man wasn't there anymore. Something was different, though. As soon as the group was about to be safely on the other side again, they heard the bridge creak and groan.
"What was that?!" Kenny stammered.
"I don't know!" Julie yelled back.
The bridge started cracking and breaking. Then, the bridge started collapsing to its side like something or someone chopped one of its stilts off. Benji and Aurelia jumped and made it to the other side and watched in horror as the bridge tumbled down with Trevor, Kenny and Julie still on it! The two who did make it were subsequently injured by the landing, wounded by rocks and splintered sticks.
"Trevorrrr! Noooo!" Benji cried while trying to reach out over the edge.
CRASH! Everything crashed into the lake below. Benji and Aurelia looked at each other with tears in their eyes.
"I'm g-gonna call for help." Aurelia stammered out, while calling 911 for an ambulance.
Benji woke up in a panicked state with some sweat coming down his forehead. He looked at the time on his phone, 6:00 AM. He started to cry softly into his blankets, while he laid there in his bed in the cold autumn morning. He couldn't keep reliving this nightmare over and over from the very horrible incident that happened super recently in the spring. Benji lost the love of his life of two years and two of his friends to a very horrible accident while their group went out hiking for a camping trip in their area. He couldn't get this nightmare out of his head, the scenes kept being played every night. He wished it would go away so he could forget.
"BRRRINGGG! BRRRIIINGG!"
Benji's alarm on his phone got him out of his depressed state. He turned off the alarm in annoyance, and sat up in his bed.
"Ugh, I don't want to go anywhere today, but I have to", Benji muttered to himself, while rubbing his eyes with tiredness and getting out of the bed.
Benji lived by himself in this house he and Trevor bought a year ago. He felt so alone because after the accident, Aurelia and their other friends drifted apart from each other a bit. "It was for the best for them", a couple of their friends told him a couple months ago. "Yeah, right." Benji muttered and rolled his eyes at the thought. After the freak accident, he also left his job as one of the head bakers, and took a break from his studies at his university to focus on himself. He missed his family sometimes, and just wanted to cry in their arms, but he didn't want to look weak in his father's eyes. His father would always disapprove of his lifestyle, but both of his parents still loved him for who he is. Today, Benji's schedule wasn't packed like usual, but he had to see his therapist because it was Sunday. He showered, brushed his teeth, got dressed, and got in his car.
Today's therapy session was normal as usual with questions like, "Do you still have the nightmares?" Benji replied with the same answers as before, "Of course." However, Dr. Kimberly did have a new question, "I know that you stated before that you and your friends went to a certain pizzeria as children," she started to ask, "Did you hear that someone bought that place and is revamping it back to its former glory?"
"Wait, what?", Benji asked confused while shifting around in his chair.
"Yeah, I know it's not related to your horrible situation, but I think it's something you should see to go heal yourself a bit mentally." Dr. Kimberly stated with helpful intention.
"O-oh ok, I'll look into it." Benji replied softly.
Dr. Kimberly looked at her watch, "Oh shit, we're over time. I'm sorry Benji, we'll have to finish this next session."
"It's okay, I promise." he said while standing up.
Benji walked slowly and somberly out of the building, got in his car and drove off. He started thinking about what his therapist told him at the end of today's session.
"DING!" Benji's phone hooked up to the car's console, lit up with a text notification. Hudson!
"Shit, fuck that guy!" Benji growled lowly while ignoring the text message. Hudson and Benji had gone on one date after meeting on a dating app, now Hudson wouldn't stop trying to message him. Benji muttered something in annoyance, and then, saw the mall coming up.
"I think I should go to the mall to try to better my mood." Benji said out loud to himself.
He drove towards the mall, parked, and went inside to start shopping. The mall was huge, on the inside and out, and was two stories. The first floor had the food court, two chain restaurants, a small arcade, and the stores were the regular kind of retail stores you would see at any mall. The second floor, however, had a furniture store and all the designer stores as well. Benji first got a mango smoothie from the Smoothie King in the food court to walk around and sip on. Benji looked up to the second floor, and decided to go up there to buy a couple of things as a treat. He first walked into Tiffany & Co and bought himself a really cute silver and teal diamond bracelet. Then, he went into Saint Laurent and got himself a new pair of black jeans and a silver moon necklace. He was thinking about changing his look by getting a new sweater now for it. Benji decided on a kind of fuzzy cream colored sweater from Burberry, he thought it would look good with the black jeans. After all of that, he decided that he over spent a little too much, but as he was heading down one of the escalators he noticed that there was a new resale shop that just opened up.
He didn't notice it before, so he decided to check it out as a last minute idea. There was a lot of cute things that people have left here that they didn't want anymore. Benji was browsing around the cardigan section when he saw something that caught his eye! Someone brought in the Speak Now (Taylor Swift's Version) cardigan! He looked at the size, and price.
"It's my size for just thirty dollars! That's such a steal!" Benji exclaimed to himself with pure joy.
Benji bought the cardigan and decided it was time for him to leave the mall so he doesn't keep over spending.
"Oh my fucking god, this is why I can't treat myself, but oh well." Benji muttered to himself in annoyance while looking at his bank account.
As he was leaving, he noticed an empty table with fliers on it, 'Revamped Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria! Grand Re-Opening Monday September 25th! Starts at 1 PM!'
"Wait, isn't that tomorrow?" Benji asked himself while checking the calendar on his phone, "It is!"
He kept reading the flier, 'Security Night Guard needed! Walk ins tomorrow! No experience needed necessary!' Benji took the flyer with him to have the address, he could need a new job at least. All he really wanted was a good nights sleep, so working the nightshift seems to be the best bet in this entire situation.
Once Benji had gotten back in the car and put his stuff away, his phone had started to ring. Of course it was Aurelia. Benji really wanted to answer and tell her all about his new outfits, she was the fashionable one after all. Remembering previous events with the group, he sadly decided to let the call go to voicemail. With a deep sigh he pulled out of the parking lot to head home. Sitting in the total silence gave Benji some real time to think. Maybe seeing this flier was a sign to take his therapists advice. Whenever he was younger, the Freddy's pizzeria would always help cheer him up. Who's to say nowadays that the franchise couldn't still bring him joy? The universe was obviously pointing him in one direction and honestly, it would be a disappointment to ignore it. Could this help with his current issues? Maybe it could just be a nice distraction.
