For a few months, everything was quiet. She was able to see her parents more often and they began to talk about bringing her little brother, who would celebrate his first birthday soon next time.
She spent a lot of time alone with Edward, now that they had taken the next step. It wasn't unusual for a new couple. Given that they never had to go to the bathroom or eat nor sleep, they had a sheer infinite amount of time, and they made good use of it.
But after a while, something changed. She stopped cooking and eating regular food. Instead, her need for blood grew a lot to the point where she had to hunt nearly every day. Her mood began to shift quite suddenly, and she stopped phasing, claiming that it hurt too much, and she felt uncomfortable in her wolf-skin.
Carlisle ran a few tests but got no result.
One night, they were both in their room. Edward lay on the bed and watched her as she restlessly paced the lengths of his room. A frown was on his face.
„Why don't you come here for a while? I could play the piano or read you a book", he suggested.
But she shook her head. „I'm not in the mood for another book or music. I've heard everything at least a thousand times," she snapped.
When she saw the hurt on his face, she sighed and finally sat down opposite him. „I'm sorry. It's not your fault, I'm feeling like this. It's just… I don't know… Like there is something inside me that won't let me rest. I have to be always in motion and it's exhausting. Plus, this sudden need for more and more blood. It's driving me insane!"
Edward looked concerned as he interlaced their fingers. „Can it have something to do with your werewolf? You said it hurt to phase."
She nodded. „Another thing that's concerning. It never hurt. It came naturally, like putting on a jacket or something. But now, there is this reluctance. As if this thing doesn't want me to phase or something. And only the thought of eating regular food is making me sick. That cannot be right." She sighed again and fell down, her head on his lap so that he could caress her beautiful white hair.
Edward agreed with her. Whatever was happening, it wasn't normal. But she was something that should never have existed in the first place, a someone part vampire and part werewolf. What was normal for her?
„I even thought about taking a pregnancy test."
These words, spoken so carelessly, startled him to the bone. He stopped moving. „Why would you do that? Vampires don't get pregnant."
„But humans do," she pointed out. „And since I'm half werewolf…" She didn't need to finish her sentence.
He cleared his throat. „And… did you? Take the test?"
She shook her head. „I bought it though. On a whim. I mean, there is no way I can be pregnant, even if I'm half werewolf. Since vampires are technically dead, they shouldn't be able to father a living thing." She didn't sound as convinced as her words suggested.
Edward was still as a statue, but his thoughts raced at double speed. He agreed with her. He had no heartbeat, didn't breathe, how would he be able to get her pregnant? But what if…
„Maybe you should take the test. You know, just to be sure."
She didn't have to go to the toilet as a vampire, but the more real food she ate, the more she had to.
He coughed again and then watched her as she slowly got up and rummaged through her backpack.
The five minutes it took for the test to show a result were the longest in his nearly 117 years on earth.
When she finally came out, the small stick in her hand, she didn't have to say anything.
„I think we should talk to your father…"
She looked as shocked and as scared as he himself felt as all four of them looked at the black and white monitor.
When they had come down and told Carlisle everything, he had immediately packed his bag and insisted they go to the clinic where he currently worked because he didn't have the right equipment at home. Esme had come with them, seeing how close both of them were to completely losing it.
„Well…" Carlisle murmured while he drove the device across her stomach. The monitor beeped quietly. Her hand felt weak and cold in his.
Finally, Carlisle stopped. He pointed at something on the monitor, a small white dot. „There it is. Well, it seems like your suspicions have been correct. You are pregnant, Sara."
Complete and utter silence followed his words. They were all at a loss at what to say. This whole situation was completely new to all of them. A pregnant vampire had never existed, it shouldn't. But there it was, This tiny dot.
„And… it lives?" Edward croaked after a while.
Carlisle nodded. „The fetus has a steady heartbeat. So, my guess is about eight weeks."
„Eight weeks…", she murmured. „That's when the symptoms started."
Another nod. „This fetus is half vampire, after all. It would make sense that it needed more blood and wouldn't want you to phase."
„A baby, half vampire, half werewolf," Esme said, putting a hand on her son's and Sara's shoulder. „A baby. You should be happy. We don't know how this is possible, but it is a baby. You are going to be parents."
Edward wasn't sure he could share his mother's happiness. One look at Sara and he knew he wasn't alone in this. „Could you…" He looked at his parents. They understood and left without another word. Only the steady beeping of the monitor remained and the picture of the small white dot. A baby. Their baby.
„So…" Edward raked a hand through his hair. „A baby…"
She nodded weakly; her eyes locked on the screen. Already, her hand lay on her stomach, as if to protect this miracle. „A baby…" she murmured. „I always wanted kids. I thought it wasn't in my cards but now… This is a miracle. I don't know how, but it is a miracle."
Edward sighed, then he sat down on the bed beside her and looked at the screen, too. „A baby…" He sounded more terrified than happy. He didn't know what to do and this was new to him. Not being able to do something, just jump into the water not knowing how deep it was. „A baby."
She chuckled. „You said that before."
He smiled weakly. „It's because I still cannot believe it. I mean, how is this possible? How can something like this exist?"
„By something like this, you mean the baby. Our son or daughter."
„Yes!" His voice became agitated and suddenly, something happened. The small white dot moved. Just an inch but it certainly did. As if it had reacted to its father's voice.
„Did you see that?", he asked incredulously.
She nodded. „And felt it too. Like the wings of a butterfly."
He slumped down, let his shoulders drop and took a deep breath. „What have we done?"
