Chapter 19

A Quick Visit

Thump thump thump

Pause.

THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP

Jeanette wondered who on earth would be hammering on the door of her Laboratory at this time of night. Through the frosted window she could see the silhouette of a man in a hat. Her heartbeat quickened.

She opened the door and there was… Alvin? Her heart nearly stopped. What on earth would he be doing here?

"Dr. Miller?" he grumbled.

"Y-yes?" Jeanette asked tremulously.

"I have bad news."

Jeanette already felt her throat tighten. "W-w-what is it?"

"My brother Simon has been taken…"

Already the tears were starting to form. Jeanette sat down because her legs felt so shaky. She couldn't bring herself to speak.

"This is a tough position, Dr. Miller. It's a game of chess right now." Alvin stuck his hands in his pockets.

"So will it be the necklace or Simon?" she finally asked and her voice didn't sound like her own.

"We'll figure something out," Alvin answered. "I don't give up that easily and I don't negotiate."

"I never wanted it to go this far!"

"I'm sure you didn't."

"I thought it would just be a simple ransom."

"You never know with crooks."

"What are you going to do?"

"Leave that to me."

"Alvin…"

Alvin stopped in his tracks. Jeanette knew she had never called him by his first name before.

"I do care about Simon. I hope you do know that."

"Do I have reason to doubt?" he asked.

"Just… whatever happens."

Alvin tightened his lips and nodded. He left the Laboratory, just as thunder rumbled overhead and the first spattering of rain pattered against the windows.

It's a rainy day here today, with lots of thick clouds, and so I guess you could say I've had a lot of inspiration for writing going! Not to mention, we're just about to celebrate Thanksgiving here in the United States! So here is my holiday present to you!

Ready to reach the Climax of the story? Because we're getting close! I'll try and post again sometime after the holiday (we're really close to the end of the college semester!) so hang tight, boys and girls!

Also, thank you to everybody who reviews this story! It makes me more excited than you know. And also a Shoutout to Simonette Dreaming, who is a GREAT writer and has stuck with this story since the early days.
