Judy woke up the next morning with troubled dreams in her memory. She ate breakfast and got ready for the day, thinking about the night before. When she walked outside, Nick was already parked on the curb waiting for her. She smiled as she climbed into the passenger side. "Morning Nick."
"Morning Carrots." Nick said. "How'd you sleep?"
"Not too well, actually. I had a few disturbing dreams last night."
"Same. Tell me it wasn't about being trapped in a bedroom with something terrifying trying to get in."
Judy glanced at Nick. "I had the same dream."
As they walked into the ZPD precinct they were met by the front desk clerk, a portly cheetah named Benjamin Clawhouser.
"Hey Judy! Hey Nick! I heard you two went to that pizzeria last night."
Judy and Nick glanced at each other and looked back at their friend and co-worker.
"Yep." Nick replied. "It was quite a night."
"Clawhouser," Judy asked cautiously, "Do you know anything about Fazzbears?"
Clawhouser reached for a donut from his lunch box, which had become sort of a legend in the precinct for never being empty. "A little. I know the rumors about the haunted animatronics and missing kids, but that's about it. You should be able to find the old case files somewhere in the case archives. I read through them when I was stationed down there."
"Thanks Ben." Judy said.
In the dimly lit archives room, Judy and Nick sifted through dusty files and old records. The smell of aged paper filled the air as they pulled out a box labeled "Fazbear Entertainment."
"The place was shut down for a reason," Nick muttered, flipping through a stack of documents. "Let's see what we can find."
Judy nodded, her eyes scanning the contents of a thick file. The two partners worked together and, over the next few hours, compiled a timeline of events that lead up to the closing of the franchise.
Timeline Summary*
1973 - A restaurant opens named "Fredbear's Family Dinner", by a wolf named William Affton and a leopard named Henry Emily. The main attraction were two animatronics, considered (At the time) revolutionary technology in the fields of robotics and computers.
March 1983 - William Affton sells his shares of the company to Henry Emily; the restaurant changes its name to Freddy Fazbear's Pizza and builds two other animatronics resembling a fox and chicken.
July-September 1983 - Multiple missing children reported at the pizzeria. Witnesses state all children were last seen around an old yellow animatronic that had been dubbed "Spring Bonnie" by the staff for unknown reasons. No bodies or personal effects were located. Charges were dropped and the restaurant filled for public discretion and hired a security guard.
November 1987 - multiple security guards are either reported missing or quit after the first week. One of these is a wolf named Mike Schmidt. One week after he is hired, his younger brother dies in an accident involving the animatronics, dubbed "The bite of 87" Mike reported missing the day after.
Nick whistled softly. "That place has a history of nightmares. No wonder it's been left to rot."
Judy's ears twitched as she read further. "And here's something interesting—an internal investigation report about William Afton, one of the co-owners. They suspected him of being involved in the disappearances but couldn't prove anything."
Nick's eyes narrowed. "Afton... that's the name Mike mentioned. What do you think?"
Before Judy could answer, their work was interrupted by the sound of heavy footsteps. Chief Bogo, a towering cape buffalo with a stern expression, entered the room. "Hopps, Wilde, what are you two doing in the old case files?"
Judy looked up, her expression serious. "Chief, we checked over the pizzeria and we found something other than vandalism. We thought we could find clues connected in the old case files."
Bogo glanced at both officers before speaking. "Come with me. I think it's time I told somebody."
The duo followed their chief into his office and sat down as he closed the door. Bogo sat at his desk and looked at Judy and Nick. "What I am about to say stays in here. Understand?"
Nick, always one to answer, spoke up. "As long as it's not illegal." He instantly winced as he was kicked under the desk by Judy.
Bogo paused for a second before continuing. "When I was a new officer, I was called to a fatal accident at a pizzeria. When me and a few others showed up, there was already an ambulance and a bunch of hysterical kids and parents. Turns out that a wolf pup, I guessed around 8-10 years old, was too close to the animatronics at the place and, when the jaw mechanisms malfunctioned, his head was crushed."
Bogo paused and looked at the reactions of the officers in front of him. Judy looked like she had eaten something that didn't agree with her. Nick's eyes were wide and his arms were crossed over his chest. Bogo continued his story.
"That's what everybody knew, but I knew that pup. His name was Even Schmidt, and he was the little brother of one of my friends growing up. He was deathly afraid of the animatronics, and there was absolutely no reason that he would have been even close to them. I've always felt that there was something else deeper under the surface."
Judy glanced at Nick before asking Bogo. "Chief, was your friend's name Mike?"
Bogo's face was a mix of memory and sorrow. "Yes. Mike was my best friend after I moved here. He never cared about what you were but who you were. He was understanding and he always wanted to help anyone and everyone in trouble. After he went missing for a year, his parents gave him a funeral, and I attended it. Why do you ask?"
Nick spoke up, his voice gentle but firm. "Chief, we think we met Mike. Or what's left of him"
Bogo's eyes widened in shock. "What... What are you saying? Mike's... alive?"
Judy nodded. "I don't know how to explain it. We found an animatronic that claims to be him, and acts differently than the others, but nobody would be able to live like that for over 30 years. I don't know what to think of it."
There was a feeling of unease and old memories in the air. Bogo looked at both officers before speaking. "I need you to show me where he is. If he's still alive I need to see him."
Nick and Judy walked out into the lobby, followed by the ZPD Chief. As they passed the lobby, Clawhauser called out to them, "Hey what's up? You guys going back"
Bogo turned to the desk. "Clawhauser, drop whatever you're doing and come with us. I need somebody who knows the stories behind this place."
Benjamin Clawhauser, usually optimistic, was shocked. "S-sir, if the stories about Freddy's are true, There's no way we'll come back alive."
Bogo glared back at the portly cheetah. "Which is why we need somebody who knows those stories so we can. Now get over here and get ready. Your job just got more important than it ever has been.
