Vel-Zar, Son of Ken-Zar was contemplating. It had been two days since he'd found Lixa Kal-Veks… Kendra Beauregard to humankind. He was currently hovering over the British Isles, searching his adopted country for threats. Thankfully, he didn't find any… but he did smell fish and chips. And, come to think of it… he was feeling a bit peckish.
Time for lunch.
Vel-Zar sped to the scent's source; his go-to place for fish and chips… the Dragon and Wolf in Canterbury. When he got there, he was met with a pleasant surprise.
"Just the man I wanted to see," said Vel-Zar. "How do you do, Superman?"
Superman smiled as he turned to Vel-Zar, noticing his black Kryptonian bodysuit and its silver sigil. "Another one?"
"Two Els, even a Zod, but I bet you didn't expect to see a Zar, now did you? Now you can go play with your chemistry set while I fight the real battles."
Superman laughed. "Oh, shut up! What can I help you with?"
"There's… hang on, can we switch to Kryptonese?"
Superman nodded, excusing himself from the crowd for which he'd been signing autographs and taking selfies.
"There's another one in Tennessee," said Vel-Zar, now in his native language. "Lixa Kal-Veks is her name; she goes by Kendra Beauregard. I myself am Vel-Zar, son of Ken-Zar."
"You also defend Earth?"
"Earth is my adopted homeworld, how could I not? Mostly Britain and the Commonwealth. I'm somewhat of a national superhero for the United Kingdom."
"You could do more," said Superman, "but I'm sure you're not here to be criticized. You found another one of us?"
"I can show you, if you like."
"Please do."
Superman cleared his throat, switching back to English. "You'll have to excuse me, folks, but something's just come up Stateside. Shouldn't be long."
The two flew off as the crowd cheered, with a woman shouting, "Godspeed, Black Knight!"
"Black Knight?"
"Yeah, it's my superhero name. You have to admit, it sounds way more original than 'Superman.' Honestly, mate… bloody Superman?"
"What? It's what the papers called me, and the name stuck."
"You yanks have no imagination at all, do you? I was a government project for five years, and Black Knight was the codename of that project."
"Didn't the government use that project to nuke threats without radiation?"
"Well, actually, what I'd do was fly into space and come down hard enough on the target to cause an explosion with the force of a large bomb. They couldn't detect me, I was too bloody fast. In fact… it's become somewhat of a signature move. Is it too big to take out conventionally? Fantastic. Just lure it into the ocean or desert and bloody nuke it! My biggest boom was in the Sahara. A giant robot went up against ten megatons of TNT. The robot did not win that argument."
Superman let out a whistle. "Who made that robot?"
"Lex Luthor… bloody bastard wanted to drain the Sahara of its resources and sent that robot to quash any dissent. Bastard was terrorizing a local village, so I picked it up, got it as far away from that village as I could, threw it down, flew up into space, rocketed to Earth and BOOM!"
"I remember that!" Superman exclaimed. "I went to confront Lex about it and he was fuming over what he called his 'Enforcer.'"
"That would be the clanker."
By this time, the two had arrived at the Beauregards' house, where Kendra was practicing her heat vision on an old abandoned car that had been rusting in the backyard for years.
"Hello again, Kendra," said Vel-Zar.
"Oh! Vel-Zar… I… woah, it's Superman!"
"Hello, Kendra. The Black Knight here told me about you."
"Oh, yes. I'm tryin' to learn about these powers. I flew to Milwaukee and back in under five minutes. I mean, I made sure no one saw me, but…"
"It's good to know that you're interested in your abilities," said Superman, "and to know there are more survivors than me, Supergirl and General Zod."
"Who's General Zod?"
"Not someone you wanna meet in a dark alley… or anywhere else," Superman replied.
"Rather fancies being knelt to, though," Vel-Zar quipped.
Superman chuckled.
Kendra smiled. "I've decided that I wanna use my power to help people. Earth's a nice place, even if some of the people in it are pieces of work."
"That's fantastic," said Superman. "It does my heart good to see another Kryptonian who cares about this world."
"Meanwhile…" said Vel-Zar, "I'm bloody famished! I was originally in Canterbury for fish and chips, but… well, you sidetracked me."
"I'll leave you to it then," said Superman. "Lois will more than likely have me for lunch if I don't get my sorry rear end home!" He smiled. "Up, up, and away," he said with a chuckle before taking flight.
Vel-Zar smiled as he turned back to Kendra.
"You're… you're leaving," said Kendra, a bit disappointed.
"Yes… but, ah…" He cleared his throat. "Are you hungry, Kendra?"
"Hmmm?"
"Food, Kendra. Have you eaten?"
"Oh! Y'know… I haven't had breakfast yet. It's a bit after eight in the mornin'."
"Right, time zones and all that. How would you like some fish and chips, the way only we bloody limeys can make them? I know a whacking great place in Canterbury."
Kendra giggled, her cheeks turning almost the same shade as her gently curled, strawberry-blonde hair. "I… yes, I'd… I'd like that."
