Chapter 1

10,000 Years Ago, Atlantis, Earth

In the infirmary of the city ship a tall gray bearded man with white hair stood in dressed in a white tunic and trousers was tending to his latest patient. The plague was unyielding and thus far had taken millions of lives of the Ancient people. The latest victim to fall ill was the doctor's very own daughter. His fifth daughter named Quincy. She was young, only seventeen. She laid in bed sweating from the fever. Her light brown hair was falling out in clumps as the virus ravaged her young body. Her father, the last standing physician for the dying city, tended to her and her last chance for survival.

He took a seat beside her on the bed in an attempt to inform her of his intent. He grasped her ice cold hand and spoke to her gently. "Quincy, it's father. I'm not sure you can even hear me anymore. This virus is taking its toll on you. I have an idea to save your life. I don't know what the side effects will be or if you can even survive the treatment itself. You are dying." He shook his head in disgust, "So many have died from this weapon that was released on us. I know you are strong. Your youth is on your side. I would not even attempt this on someone my age. It would terminate them for sure. This is your last hope. It maybe painful. I just want you to know that I am is here beside you and doing everything in my power to save you." he sniffed back a tear that emerged from his deep brown eyes as he knew if the virus did not kill his youngest daughter than the experimental treatment may.

His four other daughters then came to the room, filtering in one by one. Hygieia, Aceso, Aegle, Laso were all fine young woman who assisted their father, Aeculap in medicine. All were stunningly beautiful with long brown hair and also sported white uniforms. The eldest, Hygieia held a silver orb in her hands.

Hygieia spoke, "The Panacea is ready, Father."

The sisters looked upon the youngest with great worry.

He rose to his feet and gathered the object. "If this works it will cure Quincy of this dreaded virus and restore her health intact." He brought the device to her bed and placed it on her stomach. He spoke to his other daughters, "You must leave the room. This device will affect everything in the room."

The daughters understood. Hygieia asked, "Can she hear us? If this fails we would like to say goodbye to our sister."

The father granted the request. "I have set the timer on the Panacea. Make it quick." He then left the room noting the time.

The sisters surrounded the bed and each spoke in a gentle tone.

Aceso stated. "We are all here with you, Quincy. You are not alone."

Aegle spoke, "We all love you very much."

Laso assured. "We will be right outside with father for the treatment."

The father called, "Time is up."

Each sister gave Quincy a hug and a kiss on the cheek before leaving. Upon stepping outside the room the universal healing device activated. A soft blue light flooded the room. The father timed the blue light as it activated. He noticed the light did not stop on time and kept emitting.

"Something is wrong." the father declared.

Hygieia insisted, "We must deactivate the Panacea then."

"You can't go in there. It will affect you." he warned. "We must wait for the Panacea to cycle and shut down."

The father and his daughters stood frustrated as the light kept emitting. After ten minutes the device shut down and is was now safe to enter the room. They did not know what they would find. The daughters expected to find their sister deceased as the experiment went far too long. Instead, they found her awake and sitting up in bed holding the device in her hands as it was she who deactivated it.

Quincy looked up at her sisters and father. She wasn't sure what her father did to save her but she felt great. A smile crept across her face. "Whatever you did, it cured me, Father."

He cheered, "The Panacea worked."

"I guess so." Quincy agreed. Her sisters soon descended on her, happy she was alive and cured of the disease. They laughed and cheered happy to have their sister with them.

Aeculap regained possession of the Panacea. He looked at the device, "I will have to analyze this further to see what went wrong."

Hygieia told him, "Your invention worked, Father. That's all that matters." She hugged her little sister harder, happy she was cured.

1985 - Air Force Academy

Cadet Samantha Carter arrived at her dorm room in the Academy. She recently lost her mother in a car accident and was reeling from the death. She had no desire to make friends, just move on with her life, graduate and get her commission. She opened to door to find her roommate was already unpacking. Her eyes settled on a seventeen year old appearing woman with short brown hair. She introduced herself, "I'm Sam Carter. You must be Adams."

Quincy greeted her new roommate, "I'm Cadet Quincy Adams." She offered a handshake.

"Nice to meet you. That's an unusual name." Sam noted.

"I was named after John Quincy Adams. 6th President." she informed of her reasoning for making up the name. She could not tell anyone the truth. That she was subject to an experimental treatment ten thousand years ago that gave her immortality. She was a teenage Ancient living life as a human on Earth. Her father and sisters were now long gone along with the city, Atlantis. All she had left was the Panacea, a defunct medical device her father spent the rest of his life trying to fix.

"I was named 'Sam' because my father wanted a boy." Sam miffed.

"You his only child?" she wondered.

"No," she shook her head. "I have an older brother, Mark."

"Ah," she gave a nod. "You need help unpacking? I'm done."

"I got it." Sam assured.

Year 2000

Major Samantha Carter stood before General George Hammond in his office. She made a request, "Did Quincy get the transfer?" she wondered.

George smiled, "Quincy has been promoted to Major and I got her transferred her to the S.G.C., Major."

"Yes!" she cheered pumping a fist.

"Why do you want Quincy working here so badly?" he wondered what was her drive behind the request.

"Because she's way smarter than Felger and I can't wait to see her big brain up against Rodney's." she bragged. "She will run circles around them, especially Felger." She then asked, "I want her on SG-1 and working directly under me in my lab."

"Quincy was always a smart girl." he recalled the cadet.

"Did I tell you she's the one who got me through the loss of my mom?" she mentioned.

"I know she was there for you on the Academy." he recalled meeting Quincy a number of times. "She was an excellent cadet. Her record as an officer is on par with yours." He opened up the file on his desk, "Graduated top of the class along with you. Recently got a degree in internal medicine. Four PhD's. Is poly lingual, expert in many different fields. It was quite a feat for me to snatch her away from NASA and all those universities." he chuckled to himself as he realized Quincy could work any job she wished.

Sam held up a finger, "And best of all she doesn't brag about it like Rodney does. She got a 280 IQ score. Off the charts. You wouldn't know it. She doesn't brag." She then recalled how she found out about Quincy's IQ. "I found her results on her desk when we were cadets. She shrugged it off like it was nothing." She stated ever so excited, "I can't wait for her to meet Rodney."

George warned, "Quincy is not the type to show him up, Sam."

"I just want to see the look on his face when he finds out she has a 280

IQ score." she sounded.

"She will be coming in today. How about you meet her at the elevator and give her a tour and debriefing." he suggested amused.

"I will, sir." she assured.

Short Time Later

Colonel Jack O'Neill strolled the hallway of the S.G.C. with his hand in his pockets on the lazy day. He didn't have much to do and he already bothered Daniel that morning. He spied Sam standing before the elevator waiting. He approached, "Carter." he greeted.

"Sir." she smiled eager to see her friend once more.

"Waiting for someone?" he wondered.

She nodded, "Major Quincy Adams, Sir."

"Who is he?" Jack wondered.

"She! I went to the Academy with her. She was my roommate. She's a very good friend of the family and General Hammond knows her personally. She was just transferred her." she beamed. "We stole her from NASA."

Jack cocked an eyebrow, "Stole her from NASA?"

She nodded, "Ah-ah."

The elevator came to a stop and the door soon slid open to reveal a petite brown hair woman with brown eyes who looked about seventeen years old to Jack. He blinked for she seemed so young. "Um…"

Sam cheered, "Quincy!"

"Sam!" Quincy replied walking off the lift. She gave her friend a warm embrace, "So good to see you again." she stated.

"Good to see you too." Sam hugged her in return.

"Hah-hum." Jack motioned for the greeting was not very officer like.

Quincy came to attention, "Major Quincy Adams, reporting for duty, Sir." She gave a salute.

Sam introduced, "This is Colonel O'Neill. You will be working with him and me directly, Quincy."

"Sir." she gave him a nod.

"George told me to give you a tour and debriefing." she informed.

Jack cocked an eyebrow, "George?" He looked to Sam for she always called the man by rank.

"General Hammond." she corrected herself.

Quincy asked, "How is George doing? I can't wait to see him again."

"He can't wait to see you too." Sam assured. "Come on." she motioned for Quincy to follow.

Jack decided to walk with the two Majors. He followed behind the pair and listened.

Quincy asked, "Seen Cam lately?"

"Not for a while." Sam informed. "You still got a crush on him?" she asked amused.

"It's not a crush. He's my friend. He just happens to be drop dead gorgeous." she excused.

Sam had to agree, "That he is."

Jack made a disturbed face as he followed. Everyone has that one friend that can bring down your defenses and make you seem rather silly and to Jack it appeared that Quincy Adams was that one friend for Sam.

Quincy asked, "So…what will I be doing here?"

"Let me show you." Sam led her into the Gate Room. "You will be working with this…" she motioned towards the Gate. She looked upon Quincy expecting to see a expression of wonderment. Instead, it was an expression of annoyance. "It's called a Star Gate. It creates a wormhole that connect to other Star Gates on other planets." She paused waiting for a reply.

Quincy just gave a heavy sigh as if it was the last thing she wanted to ever see.

"Usually, people seem a bit floored by the Gate." Sam mentioned.

"Yes! I'm floored." Quincy replied not enthused. After Atlantis left Earth and all her people died or ascended leaving her alone, she never wanted to see another Star Gate as long as she lived.

"If you have any questions, just ask." Sam told her. "I'll show you the control room." she motioned for Quincy to follow. Sam led her friend into the control room about the gate room. She introduced, "This is Sergeant Walter Harriman. He runs the controls for the Gate."

"Sergeant," she gave a nod. She then asked concerned, "You are controlling it with computers?"

"Yes." Sam nodded. Before she could explain further Quincy asked another question.

"What happened to the controller?" she wondered referring to the Dial Home Device.

"We don't have one." Sam stated assuming that perhaps Quincy had some previous debriefing after all. "The Gate was made by a race called the 'Ancients'. All the Gates we have come across off world have its own dedicated dial home device or D.H.D. Our was found buried in Egypt. Daniel can give you the history of the Gate itself."

Quincy rubbed the side of her head, "Oh' boy." The news so far was not good. Not only was the old Star Gate system still operational but the one Earth had lacked an Ancient made controller as well. "How are you powering the Gate?" she asked in fear of the answer.

"Direct power from the grid." Sam told her.

Jack mentioned, "Huge electric bill."

She closed her eyes trying to assess the situation. To Quincy it seemed the S.G.C. was a project flying by the seat of its pants. She shook her head in silence.

Sam stated, "I'll introduce you to Daniel." She motioned, "This way." She then led Quincy and Jack out the door after saying goodbye to Walter who was left manning the controls.
