Prologue

Rumi Umiyagi: Origin

When I was a little girl, I used to enjoy running around outside with all my friends. I don't remember them much. Everytime I try to remember them, they come out blurry and faded. I do remember that we were a group of five; I was the only girl. This one kid was the leader of the group and always bossed us around.

Because my ADD was worse off back then, I had a lower status in the group. Not last last, but close. Since I had ADD, I forgot a lot of things. It made it hard to actually learn things.

It didn't last long.

On my sixth birthday, exactly two years after I'd gotten my Quirk, Temperaturic Explosions, our door had been knocked down by a teenager. My parents screamed as he stepped inside.

"Sorry about the door," he said, grinning, "but it was locked, and I have a mission to complete."

I whimpered as my dad shielded me. My mom stepped forward and made one of the cuffs on his wrist explode. The teen winced as my mom readied herself.

"Don't take another step." My mom's Quirk was Directive Explosions. She could make any object explode so long as she could see it.

My dad's Quirk was Temperature. He could affect the temperature of close to anything. "She won't hesitate," my dad said.

The teen I would later know to be the leader of the League of Villains, Tomura Shigaraki, lunged outward at my mom, grabbing her fist and disintegrating it within a matter of seconds. She screamed, trying to pull away, but Shigaraki moved his second hand to my mother's face, killing her.

Her crippled form fell to the ground as my dad sobbed, still shielding me. "Please, sir, what do you want from us?"

Shigaraki nodded to me. "The girl, if you don't mind. She's the main objective."

"No," my dad said bluntly. "No, no! You can't have her."

"Then I guess I'll have to take her by force."

I don't remember what happened after that, but I do remember a few things after that.

The member of the League and his assistant put me up for Quirk Trafficking. Several people put bids on me as I sat there crying. One man finally put up the final bid and purchased me for over 1.6 million yen. He had short brown hair and amber eyes.

I never learned his name. Or, maybe I did and I forgot. Either way, it didn't matter.

When I was fourteen, his attention had been completely transferred to another girl. Younger than I had been when I was trafficked; Five.

I was able to sneak out of one of the windows and escape their constant experimentation. I ran for as long as I could for as far as I could until I eventually ran out of energy and collapsed in an alleyway.

I'd slept there for a while until I got up and started walking. I walked and walked until I heard someone shout my name. I turned around and saw one of his workers. I started running again, my bare feet already sore from the previous round.

This person's Quirk must've been speed because they caught up to me within a matter of minutes, tackling me to the ground. I screamed, trying to shove him away as he dragged me back up and started walking.

I pressed my hand to the back of his head and created a Blue Wave Explosion, sending him and me to the ground. I panted, trying to catch my breath as someone ran up to me, placing his hands on my shoulders.

"Are you alright, ma'am?" I nodded slowly. The man pulled his goggles off as more people came up and put the worker into a hospital truck. "Do you know who I am?"

"N-no."

"My name's Eraserhead. I'm a pro-hero. I'm here to help."

I tilted my head. "You sound familiar. Eraserhead…"

"What's your name?" he asked. I didn't realize at the moment, but he had been checking for a concussion of some sort.

"Rumi Umiyagi."

"Umiyagi?" Eraserhead asked. "We've been looking for you ever since you disappeared eight years ago."

"Really?"

He helped me up and took me down to the police office. I don't remember anything there, except that that had been where I learned that Eraserhead was checking for a concussion. Then, he took me to the safest place he could dig up for me; His own apartment.

He flipped a light switch on and showed me around. He introduced me to his boyfriend, another pro-hero ("There's a lot of them!" I had said.) named Present Mic, and his adopted son, Hitoshi Shinsou. Then, he told me that his real name was Shouta Aizawa. Present Mic's real name was Hizashi Yamada, but everyone called him Mic.

Next, he led me to the room I still have today, though it's much less empty than it used to be. Either way, I was grateful for his hospitality. I thanked him before he took me to the bathroom to get me cleaned up.

First, we took the bandages off my arms, which had several puncture wounds from something I couldn't remember. Aizawa looked at them with a shocked expression on his face before looking back at me. "Did someone experiment on you?"

I nodded. "I don't know what these are from, though." When Aizawa looked at me, I explained further. "I have ADD and experience memory loss from it."

"Good to know. I need to check something real quick. Do you mind?" I shocked my head and he stood up, going around and peaking down the back of my shirt. He sucked in a breath. "Umiyagi-"

"Rumi. Please."

"Rumi, do you know if you were purchased?" I nodded. "Who put you into Quirk Trafficking?"

"I don't know. I do know that I sold for 1.6 million yen."

"1.6-" I turned around, seeing Aizawa resting his hands on his hips as he exhaled deeply.

After a moment, he turned the shower on. "Go ahead and undress and rinse yourself of the dirt and grime. I'll have Shinsou get some clothes for you while I talk to Mic."

I nodded. When he left, I did as he said. I don't remember what I thought about in the shower, just that I had been in there long enough that Shinsou had knocked on the door, telling me that I should come out.

I shut off the water and stepped out, finding clean pajamas that were completely black. I slid them on and walked outside to see Aizawa and Mic sitting on the couch.

"Rumi, come join us."

They informed me about Quirk Trafficking and that the higher the price a child or teen was sold, the stronger their Quirk was. When they asked me what my Quirk was, I told them that I could control the temperature and power of my explosions.

"Did the people who buy you train you at all in your Quirk?" Mic asked.

I nodded. "I don't remember exactly who for, but they wanted me to become a weapon to destroy someone they called 'The Symbol of Peace'."

"He's never safe, is he?" Shinsou commented.

"Who's he?" I asked.

"Number one hero in Japan. All Might," Aizawa explained. "And if this person wanted to take him out, then it narrows our search down."

"Search?"

"Yes. Quirk Trafficking is illegal, and so is mutilation," Aizawa clarified. "Were there any key features that gave this group away?"

I thought for a moment before remembering. "Bird mask. All of them had some sort of bird mask. The leader had a fur jacket instead."

Aizawa nodded before standing up. "Rumi, when I say this, make sure you know that I say this with all my heart. So long as you learn how to use this Quirk to it's best of its abilities, I promise you. No one will hurt you again."

Author's Note: Recently, I've grown obsessed in the fanfiction Viridescent (go check it out, btw, it's really good. By darkfire1220). Yes, I have other fanfics I'm working on, but one thing about me is that I work on several books all at once. This one, however, has been taking up most of my time.

I know several of you have reached out to me and asked to draw work for me. I appreciate you guys loving my work, but I'm not looking for any concept art being drawn. I'm a middle-school student who doesn't have a job, and therefore, doesn't have money to pay for concept art. You can send reviews and/or private comments to me to show appreciation, and I will always read and respond to them.

Thanks for reading the prologue, and if anyone is a spanish reader, I will have a spanish one ready for you to read soon.
