Ep 4 - Hoop king
Bonnie sat back in his chair, trying to focus on his half-eaten sandwich. He had been trying to ignore Freddy's constant chatter, but it was... oddly comforting. As much as Bonnie liked being alone, there was something about Freddy's relentless energy that kept him from completely zoning out.
"Man, I'm telling you," Freddy said between bites, "they should make a sport out of sitting down and complaining. I'd win that championship for sure."
Bonnie glanced over at Freddy, his brow furrowing. "You really think so?" He couldn't help but let out a small chuckle. Freddy's infectious energy had a way of getting to him, even when he didn't want it to.
"Well, yeah! I'd be unbeatable," Freddy said, grinning like he had just come up with the best idea ever. "But seriously, I do play basketball, too. I'm kind of a big deal."
Bonnie raised an eyebrow. "You play basketball? I didn't take you for the sporty type."
Freddy looked at him with mock offense. "What do you mean, 'you didn't take me for the sporty type'? I'm a beast on the court! You don't see it? Look at these muscles!" He flexed, showing off his arms in an exaggerated manner, making Bonnie snort with laughter.
Bonnie shrugged, trying to hold back a grin. "Yeah, sure. You've got the muscles, I'll give you that. But I'm sure you're not dunking any hoops with those."
Freddy smirked. "Oh, I don't need to dunk. I'm a strategic player. I can outsmart anyone. The best player is always the one who can fake it till they make it." He grinned and puffed his chest. "But, honestly, I'd be great if I just had a few more hours of practice."
Bonnie leaned back in his chair, suddenly feeling a spark of something dare he say, confidence flare up inside him. He couldn't resist now. With a mischievous grin, he leaned forward, looking Freddy straight in the eye.
"Well, if you're so good," Bonnie started, his voice taking on a playful tone, "maybe you should watch out. 'Cause I actually play basketball."
Freddy blinked, clearly surprised. "Wait, what? You play ball?"
Bonnie's grin widened. "Yup. I've been playing since middle school. I'm kind of a big deal myself." He leaned back dramatically, as if he had just dropped the greatest bombshell. "People call me 'The Hoop King' at my old school."
Freddy stared at him, blinking a few times. "Wait...the Hoop King? Are you serious? You? The guy who just hid behind a textbook all class?" He gave a teasing laugh. "What, you go around the court just pretending to shoot hoops and praying for the best?"
Bonnie put on a mock-serious face and gave Freddy a challenging look. "Hey, I may not look it, but I got skills. I'm basically the Michael Jordan of... well, not here, but somewhere, okay?"
Freddy raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. "Michael Jordan, huh? So, you just waltz in and start throwing three pointers, or are you the guy who trips over his own feet and blames it on 'gravity'?"
Bonnie smirked. "I don't trip. I play a clean game. Besides, what about you, huh? Can you even keep up?"
"I can totally keep up!" Freddy said defensively, giving Bonnie a playful shove. "You should see me I'm quick on my feet, and I can make a mean layup. I just need someone to pass me the ball. I don't do the passing thing. I prefer to shine, you know?"
Bonnie burst out laughing. "So, you're one of those people who just stands around waiting for someone else to do the work?"
"Exactly!" Freddy replied proudly. "It's called 'strategy.' You wouldn't get it, 'Hoop King.'"
Bonnie shook his head, still grinning. "I mean, if you're really that good, maybe we should have a game. Show me what you've got."
Freddy's eyes widened. "Wait, are you challenging me? Seriously?" He leaned forward, mockingly glaring at Bonnie. "You wanna see the real deal? The Freddy-basketball legend in action?"
Bonnie nodded, still chuckling. "Yeah. Let's see what the 'legend' can do."
Freddy stood up, striking a dramatic pose as if he were about to enter a professional game. "Get ready, Bonnie. You won't know what hit you," he said, voice full of mock seriousness.
Bonnie grinned and stood up, ready to match Freddy's over-the-top energy. "Oh, I'm ready. But don't say I didn't warn you when I wipe the floor with you."
They both stood there for a moment, staring each other down like they were about to start the most epic basketball game the world had ever seen. The entire cafeteria seemed to pause, the noise of students fading into the background.
Freddy finally broke the silence with a grin. "Alright, but just so you know if you lose, you're getting me a milkshake. Chocolate. Extra whipped cream."
Bonnie raised an eyebrow. "Deal, but only if you get me one too. I'm gonna need it after I wipe the court with you."
They both burst out laughing, drawing a few curious looks from the other students around them. Bonnie had no idea how it had turned into a game of basketball trash talk, but for the first time in a while, he didn't mind the attention. In fact, it felt kind of... good.
"I guess we'll see who's really the king of the court," Freddy said, slapping Bonnie on the back with a grin.
Bonnie laughed, feeling more at ease than he had all day. "We will. And just so you know, I play for keeps."
They both walked out of the cafeteria, their ridiculous basketball showdown looming in the distance, but neither one really cared. They were just having fun, the kind of fun Bonnie didn't know he needed until now.
