Hopefully more coming soon. Sorry for the delay. No smut this chapter. More coming soon.
The sound of her half clicking half stomping filled the house. Hunter sat on the living room in silence. Staring down at his hands in embarrassment. Willow clicked through the hallway. Spun around the corner. And marched behind the sofa that Hunter was sitting on. He stood up and turned to speak to her.
She just turned her nose up all the higher and ignored him. Her braids bouncing against her broad shoulders and strong back. Hunter got off of the sofa and followed after her. But it was tough talking to her back when she was moving so fast. Grabbing the few snacks she would need for her work out.
She turned, gave Hunter the iciest glare he had ever received. Then strode past him with a dismissive sniff. He stood in the kitchen and rubbed his face in complete defeat.
"Well I mean the good news is that she didn't yell at you?" Gus spoke from where he was sitting eat his sugar frosted chocolate bombs. The kind with super extra high fructose corn syrup. Apparently only humans made stuff this disgusting. And also apparently only human beings in the United States of America ever actually made, bought, and ate the stuff. The quality of food in the country was actually remarkably low.
"And she seemed less angry right? Her dismissive snort wasn't as strong as yesterdays….right?" Hunter asked hopefully. Gus sighed and shook his head.
"Nah man, if anything she sounded angrier. It's the subtle notes toward the end. You know the sort of head tilt and gruffness in the shoulders."
Hunter deflated at that and sighed in defeat. The entire house had been walking on egg shells. There was no music being played, no wild board game nights, no crazy conversations and arguments at all hours of the day. People were just sort of drifting in their own little orbits. Trying not to step on each other's toes. It was not going too well.
Gus took another spoonful of milk. It was turning blue from the dyes. He chewed the crunchy liquid and studied his buddy. Hunter sighed and gestured to a chair.
"Can I sit down?" Hunter asked awkwardly. Gus gestured grandly with his spoon. The front door slammed shut. The plates rattled in their cupboards. Hunter sat in the chair and rested his head in his hands. He closed his eyes and let out a breath.
"I fucked up pretty badly huh?"
"Bro you're telling me." Gus said with a snort. He pointed the spoon accusingly at Hunter. "Just because we're talking doesn't mean I'm not mad at you. Or at least confused by what happened. I definitely don't get much of a say in all of this. You're just my buddy, and you hurt my best friend in the whole wide world. Willow should have told you her feelings earlier, and Mrs. Noceda should have known better. But really I don't get any say in this. Luz has much more of a reason to be mad at you. I mean….you fucked her MOM dude."
Hunter let out a distressed whine and placed his face on the table cloth. His brain felt like it was melting. The atmosphere in the small house had been thick as a brick for the last week and a half. Willow wasn't talking to him or Camila. Amity kept on shooting him the darkest looks (And she already had him on a pretty short shit list so that wasn't great.) And Luz had to physically leave the house whenever he was in it.
Otherwise she would just straight up attack him. She had thrown her shoes, a plate, some stuffed animals and a cast iron skillet at him a few times. She wasn't even talking to him anymore. Just flinging whatever was within easy reach at him.
"I….I wish I could explain it." Hunter grumbled in distress.
"Try to explain it to me then." Gus sat back and crossed his arms. His sugar rush would probably hit within a few minutes. You really weren't supposed to eat two bowls of this stuff every day. But they were a very special treat. Gus picked a very persistent chunk of sugar out from between his molars.
"I….I really do like Camila."
"It is so weird to hear her first name. She's always been Mrs. Noceda. Or Luz's Mom. But Camila? It's a cute name." Gus gestured his hand. "But continue."
"I do like Camila a lot. I didn't know that it was that big of a deal. I've never really been trained with any of that stuff. Romance you know? I just sort of expected everything would be okay. Or fall into place. Or we would figure it out together….."
"It is a little weird since she's like twenty years older then you." Neither of them mentioned that as a Grimwalker Hunter was technically hundreds of years old. But he only really remembered the last eighteen years of his life. So that didn't really count too much right?
"And I was going to tell you guys. All of you. Eventually. But….I mean…"
"You didn't expect us to walk in on you two on the living room floor. Man I still can't look at that rug the same way. You two were going at it like college kids in their prime." Gus said with a bit of a quip. The quip was pretty much the only thing keeping him grounded.
"Could you please take this seriously?"
"Look it's a crazy situation. I'm trying to keep my head wrapped around it. So the jokes at your expense are probably going to keep on coming. Just like you were, with Mrs. Noceda. Last one. I promise bro." Hunter let out a sigh and sat back up.
"I was planning on explaining it eventually. But I'm not even sure we knew what it was. I liked her a lot. I still like her a lot. And I still like Willow a lot. Hell I feel the same way towards Willow that I do for Camila."
"What…so you were planning on having two girlfriends?" Gus asked in amazement. Hunter blushed and fiddled with his thumbs. Rolling them over each other.
"Maybe? Yes? I mean…There were hopes…I hoped that I could maybe convince the two of them to….I don't know…."
"Go on dates? Shower together? Share a bed and thoughts and feelings and hopes for the future?" Gus said as he stood up and put his bowl in the sink. His chest was starting to feel tight. So he drank a glass of water and tried to focus on his breathing.
"Yeah. And just do other couplie things. I was going to discuss it with Willow and Camila at the same time."
"I'm pretty sure Camila would have just told you to go after Willow dude. Just like all of us were advising. You picked that up right? That everyone thought you should just ask Willow out right?"
"Well in hindsight that is super obvious. But I really didn't pick that up for a while." Hunter said pouting a little and tapping his fist against the table.
"We don't need to make like a graph for you to get this man. Not even you are that dense." Gus brought a glass of water over and offered it to Hunter. The two sipped their drinks and Hunter scrubbed at his face.
"So what do I do? Apologize to Willow? Apologize to Camila? Try to convince Camila to keep on dating me? Are we even dating? Try to make up with Willow? I don't want to hurt her. And I do want to go out with her."
"I think you should start by apologizing to Luz. I mean you were balls deep in her mom. In front of her. In her living room. That is probably going to need a lot of therapy to deal with." Gus pointed out. Hunter sighed and chuckled.
"Out of talking to everyone I think she will be the scariest." Hunter chugged his water and smiled at Gus. "I…Am glad that you listened to me."
Gus held up a hand with a small smirk.
"As someone who has dealt with weird relationships of someone refusing to talk to or explain situations….It can be tough. But be honest. Be open. And actually work this shit out Hunter. Because otherwise it's all going to come barrelling down on you and it will be so much worse." Hunter stood and took a deep breath.
"Okay. First thing's first. Luz….Wish me luck." Gus gave him a thumbs up and started to clean up the kitchen table.
Willow sat in the garden bed. The one directly underneath the kitchen window. The open kitchen window. Where she heard everything. She pulled her knees up underneath her chin and felt her heart do a weird fluttering dance in her chest. She closed her eyes and sighed.
Hunter walked up to Luz's room. He knocked twice. Right above the cool picture of the badger entwined with the snake. She said it was from this cool novelty gift shop somewhere in a weird place called Oregon. Amity swung open the door with a glare. As if she had been expecting him.
"Nope." She said slamming the door closed quickly. Hunter sighed and hung his head. He knocked again. Right on the picture of the epically drawn owl face. The one kept right in the center of the door. Either as a tribute or as a warning. It wasn't quite clear which.
"I'm not going until we talk Luz." Hunter said again. There came a shuffling on the other side of the door.
"She is not speaking to you!" Amity shouted through the thin door. He could see her shadow underneath the door. He knocked again. He knocked again.
"Look I really don't want to shout through the door at you. Can we please just come out here and talk? I know that you're mad and you have every right to be, but I really need to talk to you about this and clear up—" The door flew open. Luz was still in her PJ's even though it was pushing noon. Her hair was a wild slicked up mess. The normally happy go lucky overly optimistic formally diagnosed autistic was glaring at him. Her face was meant for smiles and grins, cheeky smirks and affectionate roasting. So seeing a frown that deep, that dark, that overwhelming, was shocking to say the least.
The bags under her eyes were a dull brown and her jaw was squared angrily.
"Mad? You think I'm mad?" She said with the crackle of intensity only heard in fires.
"I know that I—"
"Dude I'm furious! I'm pissed off! I'm…I'm…I'm….UGH! There aren't enough words to describe how fucked up and weird and messed up and just….disgusted I feel! You fucked my mom! You fucked My MOM! Who does that!? Who fucks another person's mom!? She pretty much has been acting like your mom! And you…you….you fucked her! And why there? Why then!? You couldn't have waited until we were all gone for a longer time? Or until I was dead? What makes you think that I will ever be okay with any of this? That I could be okay with any of this? I am officially squicked out beyond belief!" She took a long hard inhale and then continued to glare at him. Her chest heaving, her eyes watery with rage. Her jaw set in frustration and pain and just plain hurt.
"Luz I…I don't think I can apologize for it though." Luz stared at him. Then quirked an irritated eyebrow.
"Well out of the literal millions of different outcomes I wasn't expecting that one."
"And we've been running through them. We've been talking that stuff over." Amity glared at him from around the doorframe. Her cotton candy colored bob bouncing slightly. Hunter glanced between the two and then gestured behind them.
"Can I come in? Can I sit down? Can we talk? Please? I've missed you guys." Amity glanced at Luz. Luz did a bunch of weird eyebrow moves, wiggled her nose. Even clenched her jaw. All of the secret talk that couples could use to get an entire conversation across without actually speaking.
"What?" Amity asked completely lost. Just because Luz spoke it, didn't mean that Amity was fluent in it at all.
"Ugh. I was asking what you think?" Luz asked again. Clearer this time. Amity glared at Hunter one more time and then held up a warning manicure in his face.
"One wrong move. One wrong word. One wrong THOUGHT…and I am breaking your knees. To start with." Hunter nodded eagerly. Even just threats were a good start. They'd been giving him the silent treatment for weeks! This was definitely a step in the right direction. Or some sort of direction at least.
"Sooooo if you guys are going to have a full on convo….Do you mind if I just jet outta here?" Vee slowly eased around the trio. She grinned sheepishly at Luz and Amity. "Because while this is a bit of a 'sibs' meeting….Well I don't think I need to be here for this part…."
"But….Aren't you mad? I mean with Mom and all?" Luz asked with a frown. Vee tapped her chin and then turned to Hunter with a scowl.
"Yeah….But I've got my own plan for revenge." Hunter gulped and paled as the basilisk in her human disguise continued to frown up at him. Everyone stood in the narrow doorway for a few more seconds.
"And that revenge is?" Hunter asked. He doubled up with a groan. Vee put her foot back down and slapped her hands together.
"That." She said with a frown. "Now we're even. I've already talked stuff over with Camila. So it's all on you guys now. But just know this. If you break any more hearts I'll punch you. And I punch a lot harder then I kick." Hunter grunted and felt a bit of drool drip down his chin, he nodded in understanding.
"I don't think I deserved that." He mumbled. Vee patted his head and walked past with a small grin on her face. She walked down the hallway with a swish in her generous hips.
"Man she is one bad ass snake. I want to be like her when I grow up." Luz said with a chuckle.
"I'm pretty sure she's older then you." Amity responded before ushering Hunter in. Luz and Amity sat on the bed. Hunter took the rolly chair and sat with his elbows on his knees. He looked between the girls for a few seconds before taking a deep breath.
"Okay so first of all do you need to be here?" Hunter asked Amity. She frowned and crossed her arms.
"Yes."
"Fair enough. Second of all….I'm….I'm not sorry for what happened. I'm sorry that I didn't explain what was happening sooner. Or—"
"Normally apologizes don't start with you refusing to apologize dude." Luz said in disgust. Hunter sighed and opened his hands helplessly.
"Luz I really like her. I also really like Willow. And I wanted to tell you guys how I feel. How I still feel. But I thought that this was okay. Or normal….I even asked you guys questions about it. I thought you gave me the go ahead."
"I thought you were talking about WILLOW! How do you even mistake the two of them? Sure they're both kind, strong, a little dorky, caring, scary when pissed off, powerful, maternal….Oh my fuck." Luz rubbed her forehead in annoyance. "They both wear glasses too. Man I should have seen that coming. Is that why you like them both? Because they're so….similar?"
"I mean….among…other…ahem qualities." Hunter said blushing and glancing in embarrassment to the side. Luz glanced up with a very dangerous eyebrow quirk.
"Qualities?" She hissed warningly.
"I mean you've got to admit….your mom and Willow are both sort of….full figured?" The pillow hit him right in the face. He snorted and another rained down on his head. Luz grabbed the edge of the mattress, yanked fruitlessly a few times, and then grabbed a few balled up socks and flung those next.
"Don't! Talk! About! My! Mom's! Big! Butt! UGHGHG!" Luz groaned and scowled at him. "Why would you mention that? Why would you put that imagery in my head?! Yuck! Yuck! Yuck!" She balled up the blanket and flung that at him next. Hunter sighed and held up his hands in defeat.
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I should have phrased it better!" He tried to defend himself. Only for Luz to gag, yowl, and then start laughing. Her eyes widened, she was staring at nothing. And she was just letting out massive belly laughs. Her eyes wide and unfocused. Her nose wrinkling. Her entire body shaking.
"L-Luz?" Hunter asked nervously. Amity shrugged helplessly. She touched her girlfriend's arm and Luz finally collapsed onto the ground.
"Oh man. This is so messed up dude." Luz said with a snort. "I mean….you fucked my MOM! I can't even look at her the same right now. Or you. Or poor Willow. I mean….how can this be fixed? Can it be fixed?"
"Luz….I still want to be your friend. I still am your friend right?"
"Hunter….we're sib's. Whether we like it or not we are basically siblings after all of the bullshit we've gone through together. But…." Luz let out a long breath of disgust. Her eyes closing. She leaned her head back on Amity's knee.
"But dude I can't even look at you right now. I've got to talk to my Mom. I've got to make all of this make sense. You've got to talk to Willow. Or apologize to her or something. I know you two weren't dating. But from what you've said….Do you really expect her to want to date you after what you did?" Hunter fiddled his thumbs together and stared downwards.
"I…I do like her. I still like her. I still like Camila too. Is it really so bad? To want to make both of them happy?"
"Ooof. You really were raised by a narcissistic psychopath weren't you? Normal people don't think like that." Amity said with a scowl. Definitely unimpressed with the entire situation.
Camila stepped out of the back door and came to a skidding halt on the back porch. Her gardening gloves were in her back pocket. The key to the shed with their rust covered abomination of a lawn mower were in her front pocket. And Willow was sitting in the garden bed encouraging some plants to grow.
Camila glanced down at the little glasses wearing girl and felt her heart go pitter patter. She knew about Willow's feelings for Hunter. You would need to be blind or insane not to notice them. And she had definitely wanted the two of them to work out. After all Hunter was adorable, Willow was adorable. It just made sense right?
But here she was complicating matters. Since she couldn't control herself the one time that it was fucking necessary. Camila took a half step back to go back indoors. The porch door creaked and Camila winced. She felt like she was back in middle school again and some douchebag wasn't letting her sit at their empty table.
Willow glanced up. She was red faced, some scuffs of dirt on her knees. Some more dirt and mud underneath her thick fingernails. Willow shot up and rubbed at her eyes quickly.
"Oh! Camila! Sorry! I didn't know you were going to come out here. I'll let you garden in peace." Camila took a deep breath, tried to calm her beating heart and shook her head.
"Actually. If you're up for it. I would love the help. She gestured at the back yard. It butted right up against the forest. The deep dark woods kept on dropping sticks in the yard. And the grass was starting to get overgrown.
"If you're up for it." Willow took a deep breath herself now. Her face a bright red. She couldn't get the image of Camila out of her head. The sweat, the stickiness. The brief moment of pure unbridled inhuman bliss. And the fact that she was in the living room, the community room, the room that they all shared….That just kept it ingrained in her head all the more.
The two worked in silence for a pretty long time. Digging, mulching, just maintaining the yard. Picking up sticks, yanking out weeds. Willow was able to identify most earth plants by now. So she was actually a massive amount of help. And Camila was a good patient teacher. So they didn't have to worry about it taking too long.
The two worked in silence. Sometimes pointing something out. Other times asking a clarifying question. But mostly just being quiet and alone with their own thoughts and each others company.
Willow studied the lawn mower. It was a large misshapen thing from the early nineties. The bright red top had slowly rusted to a dull orange. The wheels were starting to bend on their axels and the plastic wire was fraying. Camila gripped the rip cord and gave it a firm yank. Her arm flying up.
The motor let out a weak sputter and failed to turn over. Camila took a few deep breaths to center herself.
"Alright come on baby. Come on come on come on. Work with mama here." She took a stronger stance. Bent her knees and pulled again. The engine coughed and let out a very scary grinding noise. Willow let out a yelp and jumped back. Her foot streaked out and she gave the gas guzzler a firm kick.
The engine roared to life for a brief moment. The small backyard shed filled with rotten fumes of long old gasoline. Camila let out a whoop of victory. Only for the engine to die, sputter, let out a cough and then turn off.
"Ah…curses." Camila said in irritation. Willow was hugging the doorway. One fist to her chest and a nervous laugh stuck in her throat.
"You humans sure do know how to make things….loud." Willow said in amazement. Camila sighed and pulled off her gardening gloves. She gave the broken beast another half hearted kick. It didn't even sputter this time.
"Eh, she was getting old anyway. Time to retire her. It's too bad though. I've had that thing since Manny and I first moved in together." Camila cut herself off with a blush. Willow let out a sigh and stared intently at Camila.
"Should we talk about the elephant in the room?" Willow asked pointedly. Camila grabbed a couple of lawn chairs that were covered in spiderwebs and pulled them out into the yard.
"We might as well. Come on." The two sat in the afternoon sunlight. Staring at the back of the house. The light was starting to hit the cheerful paint job and make the windows shine. Willow was fiddling with her running shoes string. She glanced at Camila and then away. Camila had her lips pressed into a fine line. Her own eyes looking downtrodden at the shadows.
"Okay. So….Willow I'm sorry." Camila said softly. Willow looked up in shock.
"I mean….It's not like I had a claim to him or anything. He can do whatever…or whoever he wants." Camila was a bright red at this point. She turned to Willow with a small frown.
"That isn't what's important chica. I'm not stupid. Or blind. Or man hungry. Contrary to popular belief sex starved cougars are just in porn." Willow let out a little chuckle and rubbed her thumb over a callous.
"Yeah well the two of you could have fooled me." Camila sighed and straightened up. The cheap plastic was biting into her bare legs. These chairs were much like the lawn mower. About ready to be retired.
"I'm serious though. I do care for Hunter. I care for you too. I care for all of you. I think of you as my kids. I want you to be happy. To be happy together. And I also know that what I did was wrong."
"But it wasn't! You deserve happiness too right? You and Hunter! And he does like you! And I like him! And I know that we can figure it out and find a way for all three of us to get through this! We can share him!" Willow said, her breath coming out all in a rush. Her words crashing and clambering over each other. Like she was afraid she would not be able to say them if she didn't get them all out at once.
"Que?" Camila said flatly. Willow felt her chest tighten and her face turn bright red.
"I mean….It doesn't have to be just one of us or the other right? Don't you think….Couldn't it be possible….Couldn't we share him?" Willow said softly. "I know he makes you happy right? Don't you deserve a little bit of happiness too?"
Camila blinked in abject amazement. On her bingo card of life, being propositioned by a younger woman and man had never really been part of that. She felt her chest tighten, her heart go all a flutter. Her eyes widen. And she repeated herself.
"Que?"
