Hail not Heil
I really don't understand the limits of my power. Case in point, this Bio-Tinker abomination I am looking at. Both of them, because there is no way in hell a person who is missing half of his throat and is underwater can speak at all. Also, it turns out my "water control" is not water control. It is some sort of weird mix of ocean control with some random ass mist and crabs. Yeah, crabs. They're about the size of a dog, which is pretty big all things considered. They rotted away pretty quickly, whatever was holding them together not being very strong, but the fact that they listened to my orders was concerning. The last thing I want to do is become Nilbog and get the entire bay area to be quarantined. I tried to figure out what made my simple undead into the sword wielding one I had but had little luck. I tried handing them sheets of metal that were lying around and rocks but nothing happened. Handing one a pole of metal got him to start making a sword but giving another one a longer pole led to him making a spear. One just picked up a pistol and somehow turned it into a flintlock which baffled me until another got a rifle (no idea where they were finding these guns) and made a musket.
I had just about given up on trying to understand what was going on when I heard a splash in the water. I turned towards it and walked over. There, in the water, slowly sinking, was a person who was dying. He was probably in the same situation I was in when I was resurrected. Another splash and a bag fell into the water and sank right next to him. I reached for the bag and opened it, revealing two pistols and a machete. So they dispose of bodies and evidence down here.
It made sense, but at the same time, they had no idea they were supplying me with an army. I pulled the machete and pistol out of the bag and then blacked out.
Waking up, I held a flintlock pistol and a cutlass, which I don't remember falling asleep with. To be honest I don't remember falling asleep at all. Somehow I also had holsters for said weapons. Looking around me, It seemed that the rest of my small crew of undead had armed themselves. 24 zombies armed with an assortment of ranged and melee weapons greeted me along with a mourngul (where did I get that name from?). Pushing aside the useless thoughts I got ready to make a raid onto land. Night was falling, which would make my life much easier. Drawing upon the dark blue currents, I pulled a dense fog from the ocean, letting it settle over the docks area.
"Let's go for a walk."
A small cheer went up from my crew as we left the water. We meandered through the streets, trying to be quiet as we searched for ABB. Hearing shouting from ahead, we all stopped, and pushed ourselves up against a wall.
"Orders captain?"
"Hold, we do not know what is ahead." It didn't matter that my bio-tinker abominations could speak right now, all that mattered was getting Madison. Hearing people run by, we continued, the buildings around us going from warehouses to residential apartments. I stopped in front of one of the apartments, feeling off for some reason.
I stared at it, looking for what could be causing this feeling of need. I drew my sword from my hip and walked to the front door, my crew following me. I knocked on the door, hard. No one answered the door, which was not acceptable. I knocked again, hearing someone curse on the other side and the scraping of a chair. The door opened slightly, a chain holding it closed on the other side.
"What do you want?"
I didn't bother answering, stabbing my cutlass through the gap into the person on the other side. A gurgle followed by the sound of a wet thump signalled that the man had fallen over and likely would die. I cleaved the small chain and pushed the door the rest of the way open. The person on the floor was definitely ABB, his jacket proudly displaying the colors. My crew marched in behind me, looking around warily.
"Start clearing this building, kill any who look like this man here."
I got several confirmations from my crew as they split off and started opening doors. Gunshots followed by screams rang out in the building as I walked up to a door none of my crew had been in yet. As I got closer, the feeling grew stronger. I opened it and drew my pistol. There were two people in the room. One was a man, fiddling with his own pistol, he was looking at me in surprise. The other was a girl with shoulder length brown hair, blue hair pins accented it. She was only half dressed, and was looking at me weirdly. I pointed my pistol at the man and pulled the trigger. He was blown back, and screamed out in pain as a hole opened up in his stomach. He dropped his pistol and weakly held onto his stomach, crying and babbling in a language I didn't understand. I holstered my pistol and walked up to him, dragging the tip of my sword along the wood flooring as I went. His cries grew more desperate as I drew near. I paused for a moment before slicing his throat open, causing him to gurgle and cough, hands going to his neck to hold in his life blood. This just left his stomach open as I made a slice there next, cutting a shallow cut that allowed his intestines to spill out and onto the floor. For some reason, I was very angry at this man. It was almost like he had taken something from me. Kneeling down to look closer at his face I saw that I recognized him. He was the one who shot me.
"Recognize me?" I asked, looking him in the eyes as the light slowly left his eyes.
The only response I got was the slight widening of his eyes as he died.
I stood up and looked at the girl, who was struggling in the ropes that were tied to the bed she was in, fear evident in her eye. Her cries of alarm as I walked up to her were muffled by the gag in her mouth. I raised my blade and sliced one of the ropes, causing her to close her eyes. I cut the other one and then reached my hand and ripped the gag out of her mouth. She quickly backed away from me, and curled into herself. I frowned, she looked familiar.
"Madison?" Her name slipped past my lips as a rasp, causing her to pause. She cautiously looked at me, seemingly studying my face, looking for something familiar.
"Justin?" She said tentatively, looking unsure of herself. I paused, That's my name. I looked into her eyes, which made her curl into herself.
"Yeah, it's me. Sorry it took so long."
I reached out a hand for her to take, which she flinched away from. I frowned, but let my hand drop.
"We should get you out of here," I said, looking over my shoulder. "I'll get in contact with the police and you can go home."
Madison slowly got up, hugging herself. She slowly walked towards me before reaching a hand up to my face. As she touched it, she flinched back slightly.
"You triggered, didn't you? When we were attacked."
I nodded, "They dumped me into the ocean, I" I stopped myself. Suddenly unsure of what I was doing. "I don't know how long I was down there, but I woke up with these powers."
Sounds from where the door was caused Madison to hide behind me. I sheathed my sword as a hand gunner walked in. Madison was peeking from behind my back, and seemed a bit scared of the zombie.
"Captain," the zombie rasped. "The building is clear. What do we do with the captives?"
"Show them to me," I said.
The zombie saluted me and then turned around and began to walk outside. I went to follow but was stopped by Madison tugging at my hand.
"Why are you working with the Empire?" she asked, looking at the back of the zombies head, a swastika proudly tattooed there.
"I don't," I said. "My power allows me to resurrect the dead, he's been in the bottom of the bay for who knows how long."
Madison looked a bit freaked out, but nodded along. I stepped out into the main entry way to see several people all crowded into the middle, surrounded by my crew. Knowing now that this was definitely a brothel, I started to separate the former merchandise from those that were customers and enforcers.
"Kill those people there," I said pointing to the crowd of enforcers and customers. "We'll let those ones there go."
The crew drew blades and readied guns and then started to kill. Blood flowed onto the floor as one by one, the people in the group died. I watched with my eye closed, as the air grew thick with purple energy. I reached an arm out grasping at the energy in the air and bending it to my will. The new and fresh corpses on the ground twitched, and slowly started to stand. Madison's grip on my hand got stronger as her breathing grew shaky. The zombies around the room breathed in, reveling in the energy that suffused the room.
"Go," I ordered to the undead in the room. "I'll gather you when we have another target." I passed my sword and pistol to a random undead, no need to have it on me anymore.
A chorus of aye' captains came from the collecting of undead as they shuffled out of the building. After a minute, I led the group of living people outside. The night air was still choked with fog, which made it all too easy to sneak past the few ABB patrols that were still in the area.
"If I remember correctly," Madison said, still gripping my hands, "Brockton General Hospital is over there."
I nodded, feeling uneasy the farther we got from the ocean. "Lead the way. I'll keep this fog up."
This time, Maddison led us, only needing to be nudged into hiding once due to a patrol. Sirens were heard, heading to the building where we had been.
"Good to see that The BBPD still has shit response times." I murmured under my breath. "By the way," I whispered to Madison, "How long has it been since… The attack."
Madison sucked in her breath before whispering back, "Three weeks."
I blinked to myself. Three weeks!? I felt like it was only two days. That being took his sweet time resurrecting me.
As we neared the hospital, I let the fog go. It quickly dissipated into the air, leaving the sky clear. We walked into the open lobby cautiously, me not quite sure what to do and the others behind me likely just nervous or outright terrified of people. The only reason they seemed to tolerate me was probably due to Madison.
The people looked at us with concern, and a healthy amount of caution. I walked to the front desk, feeling nervous.
"Can I help you?" The receptionist said, looking as nervous as I felt.
"Ye-," I cut myself off by coughing up sea water. "Yes, we need help for the people behind me, they were in an ABB building."
The receptionist nodded before walking into a back area. I blinked and walked back to Madison. Two female doctors walked out and ushered the small group to another area, leaving me in the lobby. I sat down on a chair, coughing up more sea water. A nurse walked up to me, looking concerned.
"Young man, you need to follow me."
I nodded, and followed him to a hospital bed, as he attached some machines to me, several of them showed no activity, the heart monitor letting out a long beep. The nurse cursed out the machine, likely thinking it was faulty machinery and not that I just simply had no heart beat.
"I'll be back, I need to contact a doctor about this."
"Take your time," I rasped, feeling fatigued.
Hours passed before another person came into the room. A doctor came in followed by a girl wearing a white and red robe, Panacea, I realized. She looked tired, but upon looking at me, startled, and let out a choked cough.
"It's probably not as bad as it looks," I said, "But I'm no doctor."
Panacea finished her coughing fit before walking over to the side of my bed. "You better hope you're right. Do I have permission to heal you?"
I coughed up sea water, "Sure, I'd like to have two eyes again."
She rolled her eyes and laid her hand on mine. She stared off into space for a second before frowning.
"How are you walking?"
I chucked "With my legs."
She glared at me, "I mean how are you walking while having no heartbeat, five holes in your lungs, a missing eye, a bunch of sea water in your skull?"
I hummed at the last one "Would you believe me if I said I was jumped by ABB and died after they tossed me in the bay?"
She glared at me, "Either way, I can't heal you." I blinked, which made her shudder. "My power counts you as dead, and I can't heal something that is dead."
"Well," I said, rising from the bed, "Sorry for wasting your time."
Panacea snorted as she left, "Yeah, good luck with having a life."
I let out a laugh, "The dead have no life!"
I couldn't see her reaction, but the laughter coming from the hall told me all I needed to know.
The doctor coughed into his hand, "Do you have any family we can contact?"
I froze. Oh shit mom and dad are going to be pissed.
Armsmaster frowned at the scene in front of him. There were all of the signs of a fight, and a violent one at that, but there were no corpses. Just blood, bullet holes, and slashes carved into plaster and wood. A call had been made about gunshots and a group of organized people with Empire iconography going into the building, but after that nothing. Looking at the beds with soiled sheets, ropes attached to the bed posts. Armsmaster had a good idea of what kind of building this was.
"Armsmaster to console, be on the lookout for a large group of either Empire or ABB, they may have several hostages."
"Armsmaster, this is Velocity, I'll keep an eye out but this fog is going to make that."Velocity paused. "Difficult."
Armsmaster paused, "Is there an issue, Velocity?"
"The fog just disappeared, I suspect a parahuman effect is at play."
Armsmaster grunted, "That would maybe explain the lack of bodies at the scene here. Also if I'm not wrong, these bullet holes appear to be made with… muskets?"
"Muskets?" a new voice called out over the radio, "Are you sure?"
"Positive Miss Militia. There are little bits of spilled powder in the area and I have also recovered some of the balls."
"Possible Tinker then, that would explain the fog and arms, looks like the empire got to this one early."
Armsmaster groaned, the last thing they needed was the empire getting armed with tinkertech guns. It would be a disaster.
