Kim had given him space, she knew he was struggling with whatever he and his dad had been discussing in the office.

It was obviously a significant discussion and she knew it had left Adam rattled.

Everything about this surprise visit from Bob was 'off', she and Bob didn't have the best relationship but even she noticed he wasn't quite right. The biggest red flag had been him confusing Makayla's case as one had worked. She couldn't quite put her finger on what it was but he just wasn't his usual self.

Bob's arrival coupled with this case was wearing on Adam and she had allowed him to sit on whatever he had discussed with his dad while they were at work but that was going to end. She would give him a few hours to unwind and spend some time with his dad and Mack and then they would talk.

They had take out for dinner, and it had been nice. Makayla loved having her grandpa around and enjoyed hearing all about Adam's childhood hijinks. It was hard for her to ignore the look of pain she saw in Adam's eyes though. He had put on a brave face for their daughter but Kim saw right through it.

She waited in their bedroom while Adam got his father set up in the guest bedroom after the pair of them had read a couple of chapters with Makayla before she retired to bed for her hard earned Friday night tv time.

It had taken a bit longer than she had anticipated but she was relieved when Adam finally made it in, she watched as he undressed and it was clear the weight of the world rested on his shoulders.

"Your dad settled in?" Kim asked, she closed her book and rested it on the nightstand. They didn't typically head to bed before ten but it had been a stressful day and they both needed to just relax, and she feared that would be near on impossible for Adam.

The last thing they needed was to be overstimulated by some ridiculous television show or worse yet the evening news.

Adam tossed his jeans in the laundry hamper and shrugged his shoulder, "I guess. Not sure he's ready to sleep but he said he'd just watch tv." He grabbed a pair of gym shorts and pulled them on, he chucked his shirt in the direction of the hamper and climbed into bed and reached for the remote.

Kim stilled his hand, "How about no television tonight." She could see that he wanted to press her on it and she beat him to it, "I think we need to talk, something is going on with your dad and I don't think it's good news." She watched as he returned the remote to the nightstand and laid down, she rested her head on his chest, "baby, talk to me. I know you're hurting. What's wrong with your dad?"

Adam relished the feel of her in his arms, the way her hand caressed his chest, how her hair tickled his neck, "it's not good Darlin', I'm still trying to process it. He's got…" he stammered, he had been battling his emotions all day and he was now on the losing side of things.

Kim tried to sit up but felt Adam hold her tighter, she settled with shifting in his arms so she could look him in the eye, "hey, whatever it is, I'm with you."

"I know," Adam told her placing a quick kiss on her forehead, "I just can't believe it, not my pops." He sighed heavily, "Kim, he has Alzheimer's."

"Oh, I'm so sorry, Adam." Kim sat up.

Adam moved to lean against the headboard, "He has these little notes he called them cheat sheets, I found one on my desk." He rubbed his hand over his face, "it said district 21, Adam, Kim, Makayla and then he had written they call her Mack" the thought of his dad forgetting who he was, who Kim and Mack were was a kick in the balls.

Kim ran her hand over his arm, "What do we need to do? What's the plan?"

Adam hung his head in defeat, "I don't know. He said he picked a facility in Florida that he will go to when it gets bad, but he said that's down the road a bit."

"When was he diagnosed?"

"Three months ago." Adam replied, "Though he struggled to remember, so I'm not sure if that's accurate."

"He can't go into a facility, Adam. Definitely not one in Florida. He needs to be in Chicago, he needs to be with family."

Adam adored this woman, he leaned over and kissed her sweetly, "I love you, just in case I haven't said it lately. I know I'm not the easiest guy to love…"

"Stop that, Adam." She cut him off, "You're my guy, the only guy for me. I love you" They kissed again, "talk to me, what are you thinking?"

Adam groaned, "I don't know. I just know he's not going back to Florida. I don't want him to be alone and I definitely don't want him so far away. Aside from that I'm not sure. I don't know if he has told Kate yet." He loved his sister but the last thing wanted to deal with was Kate and her penchant for making everything about her.

"What does your gut say?" Kim asked him, "Forget Kate for now. What do you want to do?"

"I don't know." He replied honestly, "I'm still trying to wrap my head around it, you know? Things have been strained between us, but he's my dad, He wasn't the greatest dad when I was growing up, but he did his best. He made sure I had everything I needed, he really tried, I can't turn my back on him." His voice cracked and his eyes filled with tears.

It broke Kim's heart, she held his face in her hands, "Adam, you'd never turn your back on him. What does your gut say?"

Adam took a deep breath, "I want him here. With us." He took her hand in his, "I know that may not be possible. I know it's a lot, especially with Mack. It's a big ask, and I'll understand if it's too much."

"It will be a lot. For all of us, for you especially. This is going to be hard. On all of us, but he's your dad. If you want him here, then he will be here." Kim told him, "we will make it work. We will need to talk to Mack, explain to her what will happen. She's a smart kid, she will be okay, you saw at dinner, she adores her Grandpa."

"Are you sure?" Adam asked, "My dad on his best day can be a pain in the ass, you don't have to do this. We can find a facility here."

"Adam. If the roles were reversed you'd have my mother moved in tomorrow and we both know what a peach she is" Kim smirked.

"Yeah?"

Kim smiled at him, "Yes, Adam. Your dad is moving in. End of discussion."

Just a quick little one shot as I wouldve loved to see this conversation take place 'on screen' as opposed to 'off screen'. I realize it would''ve been hard to take place on screen with how serious the case was.

I've been MIA for a good bit so I hope I'm not too rusty and this is worth reading lol.
