The days following the Occult Research Club's victory against Riser Phenex were filled with an unusual calm. Yet, beneath the surface, ripples of change were spreading across Kuoh and beyond. The ORC members used the downtime to recover and reflect, but Kael knew better than to let them linger in complacency.
The ORC's Focus
Rias stood at the center of the ORC's meeting room, her presence commanding as she addressed her peerage. Her voice carried the confidence of a leader who had tasted victory but was now looking to the horizon for the next challenge.
"We've proven what we're capable of," she began, her gaze sweeping over her team. "But we can't stop here. Riser was just the beginning. We don't know what's coming, but we have to be prepared for anything."
Issei, seated on one of the couches, raised a hand. "Does that mean more training? Because I'm still sore from Kael's last session."
Akeno chuckled softly from her spot beside Rias. "Training is only part of it, Issei. We also need to sharpen our minds, strengthen our bonds, and expand our understanding of the supernatural world."
Kiba nodded. "The Rating Game showed us that raw power isn't enough. Strategy and teamwork are just as important."
Rias smiled at her knight. "Exactly. And we'll need all of that and more for what's ahead."
Kael's Quiet Observations
Kael, as usual, observed from the sidelines, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. He'd grown accustomed to watching the ORC find their rhythm, offering guidance when necessary but always keeping a measured distance.
Lyra sat near him, her feet swinging idly as she played with a small enchanted trinket Kael had given her. "They're getting stronger, aren't they?" she asked, her voice quiet but thoughtful.
Kael glanced at her, his crimson eyes softening slightly. "They are. But strength isn't just about power. It's about knowing when to use it—and when not to."
Lyra tilted her head. "Is that why you're always holding back?"
Kael's lips twitched into a faint smirk. "Something like that."
Unexpected Visitors
The quiet of the day was interrupted by a knock at the ORC's door. Akeno, ever the gracious hostess, moved to answer it. When the door swung open, it revealed a familiar face.
"Serafall Leviathan," Akeno greeted, her tone polite but curious. "What brings you to Kuoh?"
Serafall twirled into the room, her usual exuberance lighting up the space. "Sona-chan told me all about your big victory against Riser! I just had to come and see my adorable little sister's rivals!"
Rias raised an eyebrow but offered a polite smile. "It's good to see you, Lady Leviathan."
Serafall waved her hand dismissively. "Oh, please, just call me Serafall! We're all friends here, right?" Her gaze shifted to Kael, and her expression turned curious. "And you must be the mysterious Kael Shirogane I've heard so much about."
Kael inclined his head slightly. "I suppose I am."
Serafall's cheerful demeanor didn't waver, but there was a glint of curiosity in her eyes. "Sona-chan told me you're quite the enigma. A shopkeeper who trains devils and wields incredible power. What's your story, hmm?"
Kael's smirk deepened slightly. "Nothing worth telling, I assure you."
Serafall pouted playfully. "You're no fun. But I'll figure you out eventually!"
A Rising Threat
As the day progressed, Serafall shared news from the Underworld. While the ORC had been focused on their Rating Game, whispers of unrest had been circulating among the devil clans.
"There have been strange movements in the shadows," Serafall explained, her tone uncharacteristically serious. "Unaligned devils, fallen angels, and even rogue humans. It's nothing concrete yet, but it's enough to be concerning."
Rias frowned. "Do you think it's connected to us?"
Serafall shook her head. "Not directly. But your victory against Riser has drawn attention. People are starting to take notice of your peerage, Rias. And with that attention comes... risks."
Kael's gaze darkened slightly, though he said nothing.
Akeno's Quiet Concern
Later that evening, as the others began to leave the ORC room, Akeno found herself lingering behind with Kael. The two stood by the window, the moonlight casting a soft glow over the room.
"You've been quiet," she observed, her voice gentle.
Kael glanced at her, his expression unreadable. "Just thinking."
"About what?"
He hesitated before answering. "The calm before the storm. It's always the same. People think they've won, that they're safe. And then something bigger comes along."
Akeno studied him carefully. "You've seen it happen before, haven't you?"
Kael didn't respond, but the look in his eyes was answer enough.
"Whatever's coming," Akeno said softly, "we'll face it together. You don't have to carry it all on your own, Kael."
Kael's gaze softened slightly, and he offered her a faint smile. "Maybe. But some burdens are easier to bear alone."
The Next Step
As the ORC regrouped the following day, Rias announced new plans for their training and preparation. Kael, ever the quiet observer, watched as they embraced their challenges with renewed determination.
But even as he stood among them, a part of him remained apart—watching, waiting, and preparing for the storm he knew was coming.
