Chapter 51: The First Move

The tension in Kuoh escalated with every passing day. Kokabiel's hunt for the Excalibur fragments had drawn dangerous eyes to the small town, and for the people Kael cared about, the storm was inching closer. Though he kept himself at a distance, the unfolding events tugged faintly at the corners of his mind.

The Exorcists' Advance

Irina and Xenovia stood in the dilapidated church, their swords faintly glowing in the moonlight. The air was thick with anticipation.

"Irina," Xenovia said, her voice low but steady, "the fragments are definitely here. The energy signature is unmistakable."

Irina adjusted the grip on her sword, her expression uncharacteristically serious. "Then we don't waste time. If Kokabiel is here, he's playing a bigger game than we realize. We retrieve the fragments before he can use them."

Xenovia's lips pressed into a thin line. "If Kokabiel gets his hands on all the fragments, it's not just Rias Gremory's peerage or the devils that are at risk. He'll turn this into a war."

Irina exhaled, her resolve firm. "Then we make sure he doesn't get that chance."

As the two exorcists exited the church, a faint, malevolent energy brushed against them, causing both to pause.

"Did you feel that?" Irina asked, her hand tightening on her sword's hilt.

Xenovia nodded, her eyes scanning the dark streets. "We're not alone. Stay sharp."

Kael Observes from the Shadows

At his shop, Kael leaned against the counter, a faint flicker of crimson light emanating from a scrying orb on the table. The orb displayed Irina and Xenovia's movements, their cautious but determined steps as they scouted the town.

"They're diving headfirst into the fire," Kael muttered, his voice tinged with disinterest, though his sharp eyes betrayed a subtle concern.

Lyra, seated nearby with a book in hand, glanced up at him. "You've been watching them for hours now. If you don't care, why keep tabs on them?"

Kael's expression didn't change as he replied, "They're dragging my friends into this. If Rias and her peerage get caught up in their mess, it becomes my problem."

Lyra smirked. "You could just walk away. You've done it before."

Kael finally turned to her, his gaze steady. "Not when it's people I care about."

The ORC Prepares

In the Occult Research Clubroom, Rias stood at the center, her commanding aura evident as she addressed her peerage.

"Kokabiel has made his move," Rias began, her voice resolute. "The exorcists are here for the Excalibur fragments, but Kokabiel won't let them walk away so easily. We need to be ready for anything."

Kiba's expression hardened as he spoke. "Excalibur… It's a weapon that holds a lot of pain for me. If it's here, then I'll do whatever it takes to ensure it doesn't fall into the wrong hands."

Rias nodded. "I understand, Kiba. But remember, this isn't just about Excalibur. Kokabiel is a threat to all of us. If we're not careful, we could lose more than just the fragments."

Akeno's usual playful demeanor was absent, replaced by a steely resolve. "We'll fight if we have to, Rias. But do you think Kokabiel will target us directly?"

Rias hesitated before answering. "He might. If he sees us as a threat to his plans, he won't hold back. That's why we need to be prepared."

Issei, his Sacred Gear glowing faintly, clenched his fists. "Whatever it takes, I'll protect all of you. We've come too far to let someone like Kokabiel ruin everything."

Rias offered him a small, appreciative smile. "I know you will, Issei. And we'll face this together."

Kokabiel Makes His Move

In the shadows of an abandoned warehouse, Kokabiel gathered his followers, his dark wings spread wide as he addressed them.

"The exorcists are here, and so are the devils," he said, his voice dripping with malice. "It's almost too easy. They're playing right into my hands."

One of his subordinates stepped forward. "What about Kael Drakos? He's been observing everything from the sidelines."

Kokabiel's lips curled into a wicked grin. "Kael? He's nothing more than a recluse with a bleeding heart. Let him watch. It won't change the outcome. When the time comes, I'll make sure he knows just how futile it is to stand against me."

Kael's Decision

As the sun set over Kuoh, Kael stood outside his shop, the cool evening air brushing against his skin. Lyra joined him, her gaze fixed on the horizon.

"You're going to step in, aren't you?" she asked, her tone curious rather than accusatory.

Kael didn't respond immediately. His crimson eyes seemed to pierce through the darkness, his mind working through the possibilities. Finally, he spoke.

"I'm not doing this for balance or some noble cause," he said quietly. "Rias, Akeno, and the others… They've become important to me, whether I wanted them to or not. If stepping in means keeping them safe, then so be it."

Lyra's expression softened, a rare moment of understanding passing between them. "Just don't forget to look after yourself, too."

Kael smirked faintly. "I'll be fine. I always am."

The Stage is Set

The pieces were moving into place, each side preparing for the inevitable clash. The exorcists pressed on in their search for the Excalibur fragments, Kokabiel reveled in the chaos he was orchestrating, and the Occult Research Club braced themselves for the storm to come.

And in the shadows, Kael prepared to do what he did best: protect those he cared about, no matter the cost.
