Chapter 53: Kokabiel's Game
The battle against Kokabiel's forces raged on, each side clashing with an intensity that shook the very ground beneath them. However, it became increasingly clear that this was only a prelude. Kokabiel's true intentions were still shrouded in mystery, and the tension in the air hinted at a storm yet to come.
The ORC's Determination
Rias's crimson hair swirled as she unleashed a massive wave of her Power of Destruction, obliterating the advancing enemies. She glanced at her team, who were holding their ground but clearly pushing their limits.
"Kiba, Koneko, how are you holding up?" she called out.
Kiba, his breathing ragged but his resolve unwavering, parried a strike from an enemy with one of his conjured swords. "We're fine, Buchou! Just focus on leading us."
Koneko, in her typical stoic fashion, smashed an enemy into the ground with a swift strike. "We can handle this."
From above, Akeno's voice rang out, carrying a mix of power and elegance. "Ara, ara, they're tougher than I expected. This might take longer than I thought." She raised her hands, lightning crackling around her as she sent another volley of strikes down on Kokabiel's forces.
Irina and Xenovia fought near the front lines, their holy swords flashing as they worked in perfect sync.
"They just keep coming!" Irina shouted, her tone tinged with frustration.
"They're buying time," Xenovia replied coldly. "Kokabiel isn't here to fight us yet. He's playing with us."
Rias frowned, her sharp gaze scanning the battlefield. Xenovia's words struck a chord. "She's right. This is a distraction. We need to find Kokabiel before he makes his move."
Kokabiel's True Intentions
Far from the main battle, Kokabiel stood atop a ruined cathedral, his dark wings spread wide as he gazed at the chaos below. The moonlight illuminated his smug grin as he held an ornate fragment of Excalibur in his hand.
"Such beautiful destruction," he mused, his voice filled with dark glee. "The devils and their little toys scurrying about, trying to stop me. They don't realize they're just pawns in my game."
Behind him, a subordinate stepped forward hesitantly. "Lord Kokabiel, the battle is progressing as expected. Should we prepare to intervene?"
Kokabiel turned, his crimson eyes glowing. "Not yet. Let them struggle. Let them taste the futility of their efforts. When they're exhausted, we'll strike and crush their hopes in one fell swoop."
Kael Observes the Battlefield
From his vantage point, Kael Drakos watched the events unfold with a calculating gaze. Lyra stood beside him, her arms crossed as she frowned at the scene below.
"They're being toyed with," she said bluntly.
Kael nodded. "Kokabiel's stalling. He's using his forces to weaken them, to draw them into a position where they can't escape. It's a textbook strategy."
"Are you going to let it happen?" Lyra asked, her tone challenging.
Kael's eyes narrowed. "They're stronger than they realize. But strength alone won't be enough if they can't see through his plan. If they're going to survive this, they need to learn."
Lyra sighed. "You're always like this. Watching from the shadows, waiting until the last second to intervene. It's infuriating."
Kael smirked faintly. "And yet you stay by my side."
The ORC's Breakthrough
As the battle continued, Rias's mind raced, piecing together the clues. Kokabiel's forces were too well-organized, too focused on stalling rather than outright defeating them.
"Akeno, can you scout the area? We need to find Kokabiel's location," she commanded.
Akeno nodded, her wings unfurling as she took to the sky. From above, she scanned the battlefield, her sharp eyes searching for any sign of the fallen angel leader.
After a few moments, she spotted him atop the ruined cathedral. "Found him," she reported, her voice echoing through the communication spell. "He's at the old cathedral to the east. He's holding one of the Excalibur fragments."
Rias clenched her fists. "Then that's where we're going. Everyone, regroup! We're taking the fight to Kokabiel."
The Confrontation
The ORC and their allies arrived at the cathedral, their resolve solidifying as they faced Kokabiel directly. The fallen angel greeted them with a mocking smile, his wings casting a shadow over the group.
"Ah, the little devils and their friends," Kokabiel said, his tone dripping with condescension. "Come to play hero, have you? How quaint."
Rias stepped forward, her power radiating around her. "Your games end here, Kokabiel. We won't let you endanger Kuoh—or anyone else."
Kokabiel laughed, his voice echoing through the ruins. "Endanger? Oh, my dear Gremory, I'm not endangering anyone. I'm liberating them. The world has been stagnant for too long. It's time for chaos to reign once more."
With a flick of his wrist, Kokabiel unleashed a wave of dark energy, forcing the group to scatter. The battle resumed with even greater intensity, the ORC pushing themselves to their limits as they fought to bring down the fallen angel.
Kael's Decision
As the fight raged on, Kael continued to watch, his expression unreadable. Lyra glanced at him, her frustration evident.
"They're going to die if this keeps up," she said.
Kael's eyes narrowed as he observed the battlefield. The ORC was holding their own, but Kokabiel's power was overwhelming.
"They need to understand what they're truly up against," he said quietly.
Lyra scowled. "And if they can't?"
Kael didn't respond, his gaze fixed on Rias and her peerage.
As Kokabiel prepared to unleash a devastating attack, Kael finally moved, his presence disappearing from the rooftop as he descended into the fray.
