Chapter 4: Race Day

Darraq: You got that right.

Agent BM: Yes she is.

Bessie spent more time training with Lynn, and soon she was physically ready for the race.

"Thanks for the training, Lynn." Bessie said, as they left Growing Lives.

"No sweat, Bess. It was a pleasure being your coach." Lynn replied.

"With my new chair and my muscles built up, I'm all ready for the race."

"We'll be watching you on TV."

Then Brittany and Rita pulled up in their cars and each of them got in and left.

On the night before the race, Bessie was getting her stuff together. Baxter trotted up to her, and squealed at her.

"I know, Baxter. I'll miss you too, but I won't be gone long." she said, as she pat her pig's head.

As she packed up her clothes she began to think what would happen out there on the road. What if something happened to one of her tires, what if she got hurt, or did something that made her look weak or stupid?

"Bessie, dinnertime." called Leon.

"Coming, Dad. Let's go, boy."

And with that, they left her room and went to eat. At the table, Bessie slowly ate her food.

"Something wrong, sweetie?" asked Brittany.

"Just thinking about the race, Mom."

"Feeling a little nervous?"

"Maybe. A lot of other kids are saying that I'm going to last because I'm in a wheelchair."

"Don't worry, you'll be fine." encouraged Leon.

"You really think so?"

"Of course, you've been training and you'll have all your supplies with you." Bessie smiled a little.

"And it's okay to be nervous. Just remember your namesake." Brittany mentioned.

Bessie's name came from the famous Bessie Coleman; the first African American female pilot.

"I'm sure she felt nervous when she first got on a plane. And you can bet people tried to put her down." Leon added.

That made Bessie feel a little better, and she began eating more. After dinner, Bessie went to bed early so she'd be ready to get up early in the morning.

"Well tomorrow's the big day." she whispered to herself.

And soon she drifted off to sleep.

The next morning, Bessie woke up bright and early and got ready for the race. She put her suitcases by the door, dressed in some comfortable clothes, and had a small but good breakfast.

"Bessie it's time to go." Leon told her.

"I'm ready, Dad." Bessie replied, strongly.

"Then let's get you to city hall." declared Brittany.

They all piled into the car, Baxter included and drove off. When they got to city hall, a lot of the other participants were already there. And to Bessie's surprise Lincoln some of his family, her other friends, Ms. Goldsteen, Saskia, and Victor.

"What are you guys doing here?" Bessie asked, as she wheeled herself over to them.

"We came to see you off." Lincoln told her.

"Y-y-yeah. We wanted to wish you lick."

"Lick?" asked Liam in confusion.

"She means luck." Victor explained.

"Thanks guys. That means a lot." Bessie told them touched.

After a while, all the participants had arrived, and had their bags and luggage loaded into bus.

"All right everyone attention please." announced the organizer through a megaphone.

Everyone looked at him.

"First of all I'd like that thank all the participants for agreeing to participate in this race. This race will be televised, but also for those who want them we have trackers so you'll be able to be tracked by your loved ones."

"Luckily we already got that for you, Bessie." Brittany told her daughter.

"Yep." Bessie replied.

On her backpack was a small purple disk with a clip on it, this was her tracker.

"And now please head to the starting place."

As the rest of the racers headed to the spot, Bessie said goodbye to her family, friends, and pet.

"No matter what happens, we love you and are proud of you." Leon told Bessie.

"Thanks, Dad."

"You be careful and stay strong out there." Brittany added.

"I will, Mom."

Then Bessie turned to her friends.

"Good luck, Bessie." Lincoln said.

"We'll be rooting for you." added Clyde.

"Remember your training. You've got this." Lynn encouraged.

"And your chair is all ready for the road." Lisa mentioned.

"You're gonna do great." Ms. Goldsteen said to Bessie.

"Thanks, Ms. Goldsteen. I'll be telling the world about the center, see?"

Bessie pointed to her backpack and on it was a sticker that read, "Growing Lives Rehab Center".

Ms. Goldsteen smiled at her.

"And now, I better get going. Bye you guys."

Bessie said goodbye to Baxter, and wheeled herself over to the starting line. She parked herself near some other minors who were going to be supervised by one of the workers in the race.

"All right everyone! On your marks...get set...GO!"

And with that, everyone set off.

"Go Bessie!" cheered Leon.

"We'll be watching you!" Brittany added.

"Good luck!" Lincoln and Clyde called.

"Thanks guys!" Bessie called back.

And they continued watching, until Bessie was out of sight.
